Welcome to the latest podcast from Enterprise Ireland's eBusiness Unit. For this episode we talked to two experienced practitioners about social media and micro-blogging for SMEs. Based around 140 characters, services such as Twitter have quickly become essential tools for both personal and business communications. Our guests explain why social media and micro-blogging is potentially a key part of a business's marketing communications mix and some of the ways it is already being put to use by organisations.

Welcome to the latest podcast from Enterprise Ireland's eBusiness Unit. In this podcast we talked to two experts in the field of data -- both what you can and should do with it and if equal importance, how to keep it safe. Our guests were Gary Davis, the Deputy Commissioner for the Data Protection Commission and Paul Durrant, General Manager for the Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland.

Below we have the full podcast which you can listen to directly through your web browser. We've also broken out separate sections of the discussion to make it easier if you have a slow internet connection. You can also simply click and download individual MP3s you wish to listen to or place on an MP3 player.

In this podcast we talked to Tibus MD Gareth Dunlop about some of the key issues when it comes to designing or redesigning a website and what to try to avoid.

Gareth joined Tibus in 1997 as a Web Programmer, progressing to Senior Programmer, Director of Software Development and subsequently Managing Director. Gareth was a key member in the AIB project team which developed Ireland's first online personal banking service, launched in January 1997. He has managed accounts for some of the largest blue chip organisations in the UK and Ireland including SPAR, Bank of Ireland and British Gas, along with key e-government initiatives with Omagh, Strabane, Banbridge, Lisburn and Armagh Councils.

Enterprise Ireland eBusiness Unit Podcast: Security

Welcome to the second of our series of podcasts from Enterprise Ireland's eBusiness Unit. In this podcast we invited guests with specialist knowledge of issues surrounding IT security to discuss how this can be addressed by SMEs in Ireland.

The guests were Mike Harris, Director Risk Advisory Services, at Ernst & Young and Brian Honan of BH Consulting.

Mike is a Director in Ernst & Young's Risk Advisory Services practice, specialising in Financial Services. He currently leads a team providing information security, IT audit and IT advisory services to clients in Ireland and internationally. He has particular expertise in the financial services sector and has acted as information security manager for a large UK financial institution and Head of IT Security for a large Irish Bank. Previously he worked in the telecoms industry.

Meanwhile, Brian has over 20 years experience working in information security having worked with numerous companies in the private and government sectors, in Ireland and Europe. He has also provided advice to the European Commission on information security and has been published in a number of industry publications. Brian is currently the European editor for the SANS (SysAdmin, Audit, Network, Security) Institute's SANS NewsBites, a semi-weekly electronic newsletter.

Below we have the full podcast which you can listen to directly through your web browser. We've also broken up the round table discussion into separate sections to make it easier if you connect via a slow internet connection. You can also simply click and download individual MP3s you wish to listen to or place on an MP3 player.

We would welcome your feeback on this first podcast from the eBusiness Unit. Please send any comments or ideas for future topics you would like to see covered to ebusiness@enterprise-ireland.com.

Enterprise Ireland eBusiness Unit Podcast: eMarketing

Welcome to the first of what will become a series of podcasts from Enterprise Ireland's eBusiness Unit. In this pilot podcast we invited guests with specialist knowledge of issues surrounding eMarketing to discuss how this can be exploited by SMEs in Ireland.

The guests for this eMarketing podcast were Cathy McGovern from Inspiration, Fergal O'Byrne of the Irish Internet Association and Richard Hearne from Red Cardinal.

Below we have the full podcast which you can listen to directly through your web browser. We've also broken up the round table discussion into separate sections to make it easier if you connect via a slow internet connection. You can also simply click and download individual MP3s you wish to listen to or place on an MP3 player. Due to the nature of the environment where the discussion took place the sound quality is not of the absolute highest standard but we believe that the content will more than compensate for this.

We would welcome your feeback on this first podcast from the eBusiness Unit. Please send any comments or ideas for future topics you would like to see covered to ebusiness@enterprise-ireland.com.

To listen to future podcasts we recommend you sign up to Enterprise Ireland's podcast feed which can be added to a range of podcast catching software, such as iTunes or Juice. If you are new to podcasts, we've provided some links to helpful resources which explain the process on the most popular freely available software.

Site updates, link & search engines
Q. How do you frequently update the message on your website so that it is more likely to encourage increased links and therefore make it more interesting to search engines generally? [Length 8m50s]

What is eMarketing anyway?
Q. When you first think about the term eMarketing what are the things that come to mind? [Length 12m4s]

Domains and hosting
Q. So, content is king in terms of first base, having a website that's going to be picked up by the search engines. Then a question that we've often seen come up on the ebusiness discussion forum has been how important is it for me, if I'm trying to sell to an overseas market, to have a dot com as opposed to a dot ie or a dot co.uk, if I'm going to try and sell into the UK market? Does it matter if my content is sitting on a server in Ireland, or, if I'm trying to sell to the US market, should it be sitting somewhere in the US? Are these issues that SME's need to be thinking about? [Length 8m55s]

eMail
Q. You mentioned getting someone to supply their email address, because, once they give that permission, you then have a channel through which you can communicate with them... How key do you see email as a means for SMEs to communicate with their customer base? Is it a critical part of the overall process? [Length 2m54s]
