Due to general demand, a particular focus will be placed on banking and financial issues. How to access the mysterious Swiss banking system? How to investigate the banking institutions, here in Switzerland? Conference organisers are working to create a varied platform, with first class panelists.

Potential participants have also expressed the wish to take advantage of Switzerland being the headquarters of some of the largest international sports organisations and the IOC, to look into furthering contacts and means of research in investigating sports stories. This is going to be one of the focuses during the conference, especially as we will be just four months from the South Africa World Cup. We hope as well to take advantage of Geneva and its international organisations to provide new and original tools to investigate the UN world.

The IAM Institute of Applied Media Studies at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences and the Institute of Mass Communication and Media Research, University of Zurich invite journalism and communication researchers from around the world to the international conference “Journalism Research in the Public Interest”.

Given the crucial importance of journalism as a social institution, journalism research has always exhibited a strong normative concern linking the field to the notion of public interest. The conference therefore intends to provide a venue for the theoretical, critical and empirical engagement with the social relevance and applicability of journalism research in both national and international contexts. A central goal of the conference is to address the question: what does the field of journalism research have to offer to issues of public interest and debate, and what are the key factors for a successful transfer of knowledge between journalism research and its social contexts?

In today’s newspaper publishing environment, leaders face an increasingly complex world in which continual and rapid change is the norm. In a period of uncertainty, asking questions and framing scenarios will give confidence to leaders in this industry to go forward.

Those who act now will be in prime position to nurture and create products and services in the future. That’s the upside of a recession – it does indeed force a different way of thinking and is a catalyst for change.

CEOs, managing directors and senior executives in the newspaper publishing industry are encouraged to attend this two-day conference to see how they can help the industry to survive and thrive during this challenging times.
