Happy Day of Awesomeness everyone!

Since I am just reviewing some social media monitoring tools at work and happened to notice some tweets about social media monitoring tools on twitter, I joined the conversation over there. The fun thing: It was completely in German and covered basically other tools than radian6 . I simply mentioned radian6 in one of my tweets by saying “…compared to tool XY radian6 is…or is not…”. I didn’t even used a # (hashtag).

A few minutes later a project coordinator from radian6 sent me a @reply saying something like “hey sascha, just realized you were talking about our tool (since she couldn’t understand what I was saying in German). If you have any questions, feel free to ask…”. About 30 minutes later a radian6 employee was amongst my followers…

So how cool is that? Others might become a little paranoid, but I really appreciate this way of engagement & actually it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise when a company, focused on social media monitoring, uses their tools to get in touch with people talking about them. Unfortunately it is not usual (hey all other social media tool companies: what about you? where have you been?) – but radian6 does it in a great way.

Guys, looks like you know your job (and therefore deserve a blogpost with some linklove). Well done!

So fängt der Tag doch gut an. 10 Uhr, Dienstag Morgen, die rot gekleideten Richter treffen zusammen um ihr Urteil zum lange umstrittenen Gesetz zur Vorratsdatenspeicherung in Deutschland bekannt zu geben. Gespannt verfolgt man Twitter, n-tv, Nachrichtenportale und dank n24.de dann auch doch noch den Livestream. Und das alles völlig zu recht, denn das Ergebnis ist doch bemerkenswert. In einer Zeit in der in Deutschland sämtlicher Fortschritt, hängt er mit dem Internet zusammen, verurteilt wird und eine staatliche Hoheit angestrebt wird (ich finde nicht, dass ich übertreibe!), spricht sich das Bundesverfassungsgericht in Karlsruhe gegen die Vorratsdatenspeicherung im aktuelle Sinne aus und erklärt diese für verfassungswidrig (Verstoß gegen Artikel 10, GG)!

Laut Experten muss man jedoch klarstellen, dass es sich hierbei lediglich um die Vorratsdatenspeicherung im aktuellen Sinne handelt. Sie wird, so die Juristen, wohl in abgewandelter Form kommen. Aber zunächst ist es natürlich schön zu wissen, dass nicht einfach alles bewilligt wird, was sich die Regierung ausdenkt. Der Funken Hoffnung ob vernünftiger Regelungen bleibt also bestehen.

VIVA CON AGUA - so der Name des heutigen Web Higlights. Zugegeben, nichts wirklich neues, dafür aber umso erwähnenswerter. Als Sympathisant des FC St. Pauli ist mir diese Aktion natürlich schon länger ein Begriff, vielen von euch aber sicherlich noch nicht. Prinzipiell handelt es sich bei Viva Con Agua um eine Organisation, die versucht durch Spaß (in welcher Form auch immer – Fußball, Künstler, Events) Spenden aufzutreiben und auf die Wasserproblematik aufmerksam zu machen. Jeder Cent der durch Viva Con Agua verdient wird, kommt der Organisation zu Gute und findet somit den Weg zu den Bedürftigen. Aktuelle Projekte, finden sich natürlich auf der Homepage. Doch bevor ich selbst noch mehr Worte für diese wirklich unterstützenswerte Organisation zu verliere, hier die Definition der offiziellen viva con agua Seite:

So lets get started with facebook since this can be covered pretty fast. First thing: More users, more users, more users….not a surprise, but somehow interesting to see that the steady growth continues and continues and continues…over 400 million users with about 50% of them login in EACH SINGLE DAY!. Not bad!

Nex thing: New Layout. Again. Looks like Facebook is not quite sure about how it wants its own look and feel.Now it’s more dashboard-like. Meaning you see more stuff at once. In different sections. In my oppinion it’s pretty oldschool-table like – but definitly way  better arranged than before. What still sucks: Those automated application messages. I’m still wasting to much time on “hiding” every singles message. Hope Facebook will find a way to handle this soon.

But so far: Well done, Mr. Zuckerberg

Next big thing…

So here we are now. Google Buzz. Woooot. As mentioned before, as long as you haven’t been hiding somewhere in Siberia you might have been struck by the buzz Google created this week. Google buzz is their next attempt to rock the social media world and, IMO, they’re doing a pretty decent job.

A lot of folks on twitter kept asking if it’s necessary to have another similar service (actually pretty funny that web savy folks who consider themselves as cool and hip and “young” are complaining about new services…) It might be to much etc. pp…But do you complain about the fact that there is more than one automobile manufacturer?…right! So as long as all offered services are compatible (and I’m sure this will improve. Once more the auto metaphor: first you make a car run, the you tune it…) I am pretty happy about the growing competition. ‘Cause as we all know, monopolies are never a good thing, right? (But obviously that’s only ok if someone is against Google – if Google tries to breach into someone’s area they are evil…).

Furthermore a lot of people talk about wave and saying wave was a flop, and so will be buzz. I say wave is a flop for you, if you see it as just another chat client. It’s not about chat, it’s about cooperative work. And for this purpose it is great. Obviously it needs a lot of CPU power in order to run proberbly and that’s its biggest problem so far. But I like the approach and still think it’s a good thing as long as it is not misused as chat client. Same thing with buzz. It’s not an instant messenger (actually this is what I hate everywhere. If people use their public timeline to chat with one another. Come on, send direct messages, mails or use icq, aim, gtalk or whatever…).

So what I like about buzz is the fact to discuss topics right away under each post. That’s really cool. And you’re not limited to 140 characters. Nice! What I don’t like so far is the fact that every post that receives a new comment moves up in your timeline. I would prefer all current posts in the main timeline and maybe a little sidbar with current comments to posts on the right…(yeah cool, I’m giving tips to Google.. ;-) ).

But now, to show that I’m not a Google fanboy at all, the main issues with buzz. It’s integration in Gmail. I think it’s a pretty smart move to not hand out a complete new service to users. This might have led to an even smaller acceptance. Furthermore it’s quite nice to have most of your Gmail-partners already added to your following list and to receive further relevant suggestions (see that twitter, RELEVANT suggestions). But on the other hand I’m still no huge fan of web based applications. I know that this is Google’s way to success when looking at docs and all that stuff. Never the less this is one major problem of wave and buzz. Browser windows are there for temporary use, if I want something running continuously I still prefer applications. But maybe I’m the only one…

When writing this article I just came across some news that Google might be thinking about removing the buzz feature from gmail due to privacy concerns that came up with it’s release. So maybe all those said before might become irrelevant within the next days or weeks.

To come back to where I started: I like buzz. It’s not ground breaking or earth shaking but it’s well done and I think worth giving it a try. And maybe try to not compare it to services you already know (same with wave btw). See it as something new and try to figure out f it can help to improve your social media conversation.

Ziegelstein vs. H.C. Strache

Ein Ziegelstein hat mehr als 3x so viele Befürworter wie ein österreichischer Politiker und legt täglich weiter zu. Ein schönes Beispiel für Protest und Engagement in Social Media. That’s why I love the world wide web.

Seit Mr. Yes We Can Barack Obama gehört es ja zum guten Ton eines jeden Politikers eine eigene Facebook Fanpage zu haben. So können sich Fans und Anhänger outen, Unterstützung zeigen und untereinander diskutieren. Wenn das dann ein umstrittener, rechtsorientierter Bürgermeisterkandidat aus Wien macht, dann stößt das natürlich auch auf Resonanz. Erschreckender Weise zunächst auf relativ positive. Über 18.000 Fans unterstützen H.C. Strache. Relativ schade, aber in Österreich leider nicht ganz überraschend. Was jedoch sehr cool ist, ist die Tatsache, dass eine Satireseite auf lustige Art und Weise gegen H.C. Strache mobil macht – ohne in irgendeiner Form beleidigend zu sein oder unter die Gürtellinie zu gehen. Kann dieser seelenlose Ziegelstein mehr Freunde haben als H.C. Strache lautet der sprechende Titel der Fanseite. Und die Frage, die im Titel gestellt wird, wird auch prompt beantwortet. Über 66.000 Anhänger unterstützen den seelenlosen Ziegelstein bereits – täglich kommen mehrere tausend hinzu.

Da beweist sich zunächst, dass die “Jugend” (wenn man unterstellt, dass ein Großteil der Nutzer in Social Networks zur jüngeren Generation gehören) wohl nicht so politikverdrossen scheint, wie man das gerne darstellt und zum anderen, dass Protest auch auf einer anderen als der beleidigenden Ebene ablaufen kann.

Um es frei nach Hans Rosenthal zu sagen: Das ist…..spitze!

It’s hosted by a german student who covers cools songs once in a while in a – IMO – very very cool way. Her nickname over there at youtube is Orleanz88. The nice thing about her is, that she’s not covering always the same kind of songs. She switches between pop & rock songs and always puts a little of her unique touch in it. The first song I heard was naive by the kooks and afterwards I regularly checked back in order to see her vids (yeah well, obviously she’s pretty cute to, but that’s not the main reason. man!). I have to say, that there’ve been 2 or 3 songs I didn’t really like at all – but I guess that’s just because I didn’t like the originals as well ,-)

So, ladies and gentleman, give it up for Orleanz88

Ich wäre bereit diese Daten-VHS gegen entsprechende Bezahlung auszuhändigen. Wie ich aus den Nachrichten von Herrn Schäuble erfahren konnte, hält die Bundesregierung ja am Hehlereikurs fest. Dies kommt mir sehr entgegen. Ich freue mich über diese Vorgehensweise und wäre auch bereit einen Freundschaftspreis zu verrechnen (2 Millionen Euro, Nur für dich, Wolfi). Ggf. könnte man sogar ein Abonnement vereinbaren. Ich freue mich auf die Übergabe der Ware bei Nebel um Mitternacht auf altbekannter Brücke.

P.S: Wenn ihr jetzt zuschlagt gibt es nicht nur diese einmalige Daten-VHS, nein, es gibt auch noch die einzigartige 5 1/4″ Diskette voller Steuertricks UND die Diashow “How to mess around with government agencies” im englischen Original von Frank Abagnale. Der Vorrat ist begrenzt!

Zunächst mal lustig, dass die damit gewünschte Diskussion nicht auf gez.de stattfindet sondern auf gez-meine-meinung.de. Aber gut. Neues Spiel, neues Glück und so. Interessanter als der Blog mag da zunächst auch das Forum erscheinen in dem natürlich noch nicht viel los ist, aber der Austausch zu bestimmten Themen gefördert werden soll. Fraglich allerdings ob Leute, die GEZ Gebühren umgehen wollen, sich im offiziellen GEZ Forum aufhalten werden.  Für mich persönlich macht das den Eindruck die GEZ will einen Platz schaffen an dem die User sich sammeln und ihre Beschwerden / Anliegen vortragen um diese dann mit einem Wasch abzuarbeiten bzw. User zu entdecken, die sich der Gebühren bislang entziehen und im Forum unter Umständen Stimmung gegen die GEZ machen…

Aber zurück zum Blog: Der erste Eintrag erschlägt einen quasi mit Freundlichkeit. Die Dame die dort schreibt freut sich totaaaaaal darüber, dass die GEZ jetzt einen Mitarbeiterblog (schön, dass sie das Fachwort verwendet, dass u.a. auch Eck gerne benutzt. Hat die Agentur also aufgepasst…) hat. Klickt man auf den Namen der Autorin kommt man nicht etwa zu einem Profil, sondern nur zu allen Posts (bislang eben der eine) von ihr. Und noch mal zurück zu eben diesem. Extrem freundlich und euphorisch. Genau so, wie es eben gar nicht zur GEZ passt. Ich persönlich warte schon auf den ersten Eintrag wie es ihn im Vodafone Blog (“suuuuuper Produkt, so leicht und einfach zu benutzen….”) gab. Aber vielleicht tu ich der GEZ auch Unrecht und der Blog erfüllt wirklich einen Sinn, selbst wenn ich den bislang nicht erkennen kann. Denn weder will ich wissen was die Angestellten der Einrichtung tagtäglich machen, die von mir Geld für etwas will, das eigentlich kostenlos sein sollte, noch kann ich mir vorstellen, dass ich nach dem Lesen des Blogs sagen werde “yeah geil, die GEZ rockt….ich zahl gerne doppelt so viel!”.

Aber wait and see. Prinzipiell hat ja jeder der den Weg in die Social Media Welt wagt eine Chance verdient. Also haut rein und seit schön sozial. Wenigstens im Web!

First lesson is a basic defense tactic and actually shouldn’t be much of a concern if you play on a higher level. But since I just received some questions about the difference I thought I’d cover it in a quick blog post. So here we go. Front 6 vs. Back 6 with back 6 as our way to go. But let’s check it out:

So that’s how some teams try to play with the player on position 6 covering the front court while both front players try to block the opponent’s attacker. Sounds reasonable? wait and see…

Second possibility: Placing the 6 more to the extreme. Meaning it would cover more of the front court, but would leave more of the rest open to the other players. Not looking quite well, don’t you think?

And now this is the way, it usually looks like. While the situations mentioned before might even look a little reasonable this shows the MAIN problem of the front 6. Since Volleyball is quite a fast game, it always happens that the 6 somehow stands in the block shadow. Meaning this position becomes completely useless - except the block is asleep and you will be hit directly by the spike. If this is the case, well…call the ambulance…

While being in the block shadow you aren’t able to see what happens on the other side, you can only react. Doesn’t provide that much to the court coverage. So please please please forget this way of playing!

Alright. Last thing showing the worst case. The guy on the 6 is asleep oder simply stays in the middle (’cause he won’t see anything when moving forward as we learned before). What happens now? I, as a hitter, would either way kill the guy on the 6 (if the block would give me the chance) or simply play a cut straight behind the block where the 6 couldn’t see it. So once more: forget this way of playing!

So here we go. Back 6. Let’s just explain it:  As you can see the 6 covers the back court. Meaning all long shots on 1 and 5 should be reached by the guy on 6. Sounds to much? Wait for it. The short balls are covered by the guys on 1 and 5 – while the 5 usually is played by the Libero (blue). Having an defensive specialist on 5 increases the chance of reaching more of the short balls.  If the opponent wants to leave out the Libero, they’d have to play high onto 1 or 5 (the guy on 6 should cover it) or short on 4 (1 – which also should be covered by the block since it’s the setter / diagonal). It’s as easy as that.

Same thing over here. Attack through the middle blocker. Short balls covered by 5 (Libero) and 1 (setter). Long shots covered by the guy on 6. Got it? Fine!

Las positive thing about the 6 in the back. The backrow hit! When the 6 is already in the back, waiting for long shots, he is already ready for the backrow hit. If he’d cover the front field, he’d be in the need to first step back to get the right approach. If we play with Libero on 5 we’d only have one backrow hitter on position 1 (as long as the setter’s in the front).

So what have we learned today? The 6 in the back of the field provides us with a plus in defense, covering the long shots and bringing the Libero in for the short ones AND brings the outside hitter who covers the 6 into the right position for a backrow spike!
