The last significant upgrade to Bose's core SoundDock model was seemingly eons ago - distant enough in time that the iPod classic still showed up in press images. We might be thankful, then, that the arrival of the Lightning connector has prompted the arguably overdue SoundDock III.

As you'd expect, the primary (and really, only) change to the speaker dock is a switch to the much smaller Apple plug for charging and playing music from that new iPhone 5, iPod touch or iPod nano.

The system will otherwise seem uncannily familiar, right down to its remote control and aux-in jack. The SoundDock III is on sale today for $250; while that's a lower initial price than its 2008-era ancestor, the if-it-ain't-broke design philosophy may face a tough battle when much of the competition has since gone wireless.

Doxie One - Portable Scanner for Tablets and Smartphones

Doxie has added another portable scanner to its heart-logo'd lineup, the Doxie One, which can digitize documents and images to an included SD-card with nary a computer in sight. Doxie says that'll let you travel light with the "paper-towel roll sized" device to scan and automatically generate Abbyy OCR-read PDFs, then sync up later with a Mac, PC, iPhone or iPad.

Doxie One may look like a cut-down version of Doxie Go at first but it’s hard to comment without reviewing it completely. I see Doxie One as going for a different direction as Doxie Go. It’s still portable and wireless, but this time, it does not have a rechargeable battery and built-in memory. Though that may seem bad at first, it is not. Doxie One can be powered by wall power or with AAA batteries. This means Doxie One is much easier to use if you are always running around in different places (as you can carry AAA batteries with you as an “unlimited” supply of power). When you are near a power supply, you can just plug it directly to a wall socket.

Without a built-in memory, it simplifies the workflow process as you can use the SD card or directly sync the scanned documents to your computer, wireless.

Doxie One can sync to your PC or Mac. However, if you don’t have them (for any reason – maybe you are traveling with your tablet), you can directly scan and sync it to your tablet (such as an iPad). Or you can sync your documents to the Cloud applications/services such as Evernote.

Should you want a traditional approach, you can always store your scanned documents into an SD Card (a 2GB SD Card is included with the purchase of Doxie One) and use a card reader to grab them.

The gadget measures 10.5" x 1.7" x 2.2" (26.7 cm x 4.35 cm x 5.6 cm) and weights 14.2 oz (403g). It features arechargeable lithium-ion battery that on full charge can consume 100 documents. The speed of scan is 8 seconds per full-color page, which is not very fast but still impressive considering that it's a portable scanner.

Amiigo Fitness Bracelet Review

There’s no shortage of fitness apps to track how much (or how little) you’ve been shaking your tail feather lately — such as MyFitnessPal, Endomondo and GAIN Fitness to name three we’ve written about lately. And if you don’t want to strap your phone to your arm and baste it in sweat, there are even a few dedicated fitness-friendly gizmos, such as Apple’s Nike + iPod in-shoe system, Nike’s Fuelband wristband or Motorola’s MotoACTIV. But none of these devices are especially intelligent — they tend to track total steps, distance, calories, and that’s about it (unless you start adding additional accessories such as heart-monitor chest straps).

Enter Amiigo: a fitness app and lightweight plastic bracelet (with detachable shoe-clip) that can identify the type of exercise you’re doing and tell you how well you’re doing it as you’re doing it, thanks to a variety of sensors analysing how your body is responding as you run, bike, swim (yes it’s waterproof), or whatever your preferred exercise poison.

Amiigo’s gesture-based software algorithms identify the different types of exercises you’re engaged in — and should improve over time as the software learns more about your movements, according to the startup. Having both a bracelet and a shoe clip helps its system distinguish between a pull-up and a bicep curl, say, although you don’t always have to wear both. To generate real-time fitness data, the hardware includes a variety of sensors that track variables such as your heart rate. The device includes motion sensors/accelerometers to track how you’re moving, plus an infrared sensor to monitor blood oxygen levels. The bracelet also incorporates a stainless steel plate to measure skin temperature.

Then the corresponding Amiigo iOS and Android apps allow you to view the data, set fitness goals and custom challenges, share workouts in real-time (which won’t be at all annoying…) and accrue fitness points for bragging rights and/or the chance to redeem them against discounts on fitness gear.

The startup reckons no one else in this space is doing gesture recognition to track activity type and response in such granular detail — at least not using just one main wearable device — which in turn allows it to provide detailed feedback via the app in order to act as a virtual personal trainer.

The startup is kicking off an Indiegogo on October 29 with the aim of raising $90,000, and hopes to be ready to ship in April 2013. First taker backers will be able to snag the device for an extremely tasty price of $89, after which it will be sold for $119 — which is still pretty neat considering it undercuts some of Amiigo’s less-capable competitor devices.

Also neat: Amiigo will be releasing an SDK for the device so app makers can explore additional uses. The startup tells me it could envisage various alternative use-cases for the hardware, such as enhanced patient care monitoring or chronic care monitoring, or — tapping up the Wii-style motion sensors inside Amiigo — even gaming scenarios.

The startup has been working on the device for around 10 months so far — with a core team of four, including “tech talent” from MIT.

Enter the fifth-generation iPod touch, the 2012 model that has slimmed down to a mere 6.1mm in thickness. It's also about 10 percent lighter -- despite being grafted with a new 4-inch Retina display. Not only is it bigger and thinner, but it's far faster and has hugely improved cameras on both the front and rear.

The fourth-generation iPod touch had a curved chrome back that looked absolutely lovely coming out of the box. Roughly 30 seconds later that mirrored look would evaporate, replaced by a scratched-up patina that no amount of careful handling could prevent. But, its shape felt good in the hand, with its size and weight both seeming minimal compared to nearly every other device on the market -- two ingredients for a top-notch device.

The fifth generation improves on that in every regard. As mentioned above, it now measures 6.1mm thick, while its width and height clock in at 4.86 by 2.31 inches (123.4 x 58.6mm). Compared to the fourth-generation touch, which measured 111 x 58.9 x 7.2mm, the new iPod is considerably thinner, fractionally narrower and massively taller. It's also noticeably lighter, at 3.1 ounces (88 grams) compared to 3.56 ounces (101 grams) for the outgoing model. Storage capacities are now 32 or 64GB, priced at $299 and $399, respectively.

It’s not a secret that Apple, Inc. and it’s products have many devoted fans around the world. A designer named Georg Dinkel has taken the part about religion literally.
