Police protect Angola team from journalists

Angola were given a police escort as they passed through the interview area between their dressing-room and team bus following their elimination from the African Nations Cup on Monday.

Around 20 truncheon-wielding police were employed to stop the players being asked questions in the mixed zone media area by around 15 Angolan journalists following their 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast.

Players and officials are obliged to pass through the area, where a fence separates them from reporters, on their way to the bus.

The police were clearly from Angola and not Equatorial Guinea, who are co-hosting the tournament alongside Gabon.

One Angolan journalist said they had been threatened with reprisals on their return home if they showed footage or reported the incident.

"They said we will be punished when we get back to Angola," he said.

The post-match media conference also witnessed unusual scenes when coach Lito Vidigal complained about the standard of translation which was provided by a director of his federation.

The embarrassed official had to translate criticism of himself made by Vidigal into English and French.

At one stage Vidigal pulled a disapproving face and shook his head during translation and said his remarks had been taken out of context.

Kenya's Rudisha to kick off Olympic year Down Under

David Rudisha, Kenya's 800 metres world champion and world record holder, will kick off his 2012 season in two meetings in Sydney and Melbourne over the next month, Athletics Australia said on Tuesday.

After claiming the world title with an impressive display of front-running in South Korea last August, the 23-year-old will be a strong favourite to claim his first Olympic gold in London on Aug. 9.

Rudisha, who will run the 400 metres at the Sydney Track Classic on Feb. 18 and step up to the two-lap race in Melbourne on March 2-3, said he was looking forward to commencing his season Down Under, as he has for the last two years.

"The people are friendly, the meets are good and it works as a very good start to my year," he said in a news release.

"This year we of course have the Olympic Games and that is the big focus for all athletes but I want to run well throughout the year."

Rudisha, who set his 800m world record time of one minute 41.01 seconds in Italy in 2010, said running the 400m in Sydney could lead to a bid to run in the relay in London.

"My personal best in the 400m is still from when I ran in Sydney two years ago, so I'm hoping that I can maybe lower that time," he added.

"People have asked me if I will run on our 4x400 relay team, at the moment all I can say is that anything is possible but the focus for me is the 800. Having won the world championships I of course want to add that Olympic title."

A fatigued Novak Djokovic stared down a ferocious challenge from Rafa Nadal to defend his Australian Open title early on Monday in the longest grand slam final ever played.

The Serbian world number one, who defeated Nadal for the Wimbledon and U.S. Open crowns last year, captured the decisive break at 5-5 in the fifth and in a frenzied atmosphere at Rod Laver Arena rode out a 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-7 7-5 winner.

Crossing himself and muttering prayers at the heavens, Djokovic slammed a cross-court forehand winner on the first match point and collapsed to the ground in ecstasy after the five-hour 53 minute tussle.

The win gave top seed and 2008 champion Djokovic his fifth grand slam title before his 25th birthday, while continuing his psychological chokehold over second seed Nadal, who he has now beaten in seven straight finals.

The length of the match smashed the previous record of four hours and 54 minutes set when Mats Wilander defeated Ivan Lendl for the 1988 U.S. Open title.

Denmark snatch last semi-final berth

Denmark grabbed the last remaining semi-final berth in the European Handball Championship and booked a clash with Spain after beating Scandinavian rivals Sweden 31-24 on Wednesday.

Hosts Serbia will meet bitter Balkan rivals Croatia after both teams advanced into the last four with a match to spare, having beaten their rivals in the Main Round earlier this week.

Denmark, the runners-up in last year's World Championship, had made a poor start in the 16-nation tournament when they lost two of their three Preliminary Round group matches.

But they won all three games in the second group stage and their coach Ulrik Wilbek was confident they could emulate their 2008 success, when they won the title in Norway.

"We will remain as humble as ever because we were a little bit lucky with other results going our way, but with plenty of faith in our abilities too after improving in the Main Round and playing in line with our potential," Wilbek told Reuters.

Left back Bo Spellerberg added: "Spain will remember we beat them last year in the World Championship and I am sure we will peak in the medal rounds, although they have been the best team in the tournament so far."

In the day's other games, Spain won their Main Round group with a 35-32 victory against Slovenia to finish ahead of Croatia, who were held to a 24-24 draw by Hungary.

Germany, who needed to beat Poland to clinch a semi-final berth, crashed out after losing the rollercoaster 33-32 and the outcome allowed the Danes to squeeze into the last four.

Serbia, already assured of top spot in their group, suffered their first defeat of the tournament 22-20 to Macedonia whose 10,000 fans in the Belgrade Arena outnumbered the home supporters.

Fluid Federer plays and wins 1,000th match for Nadal semi

Roger Federer Fluid Roger Federer eased effortlessly to another record of a charmed career as the Swiss played and won in his 1,000th match on Tuesday, defeating Juan Del Potro 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to glide into the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The Swiss now faces a 27th meeting and re-run of the 2009 final with Rafael Nadal, who needed more than four hours to hold off seventh seed Tomas Berdych 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 6-3.

"That match was unforgettable for me," said Nadal. "I never thought I'd have chances to win against Roger."

Since them the Spaniard has gone down in the Melbourne quarter-finals, but ended that trend when he beat Berdych for the 11th time in 14 meetings after coming from a set down.

World number three Federer, standing 814-186 over his brilliant career, will be playing in his 30th Grand Slam semi, one less than the all-time mark of Jimmy Connors.

Federer, winner of the record 16 Grand Slam singles trophies, controlled Argentine Del Potro with relative ease to win for the second time since losing to the South American in a 2009 US Open final shock.

The Swiss now stands 8-2 in their series after earning his 232nd win at a major.

"I wish it was 1000 wins, but I'm happy with 1000 matches in total, too," Federer joked. "It's nice to win this one ... eventually I will forget which was one was my 1000th match and someone will remind me again.

"I don't remember my 500, that was the US Open final (2005) against Agassi. It's a big milestone, a lot of matches and a lot tennis.

"Either I've been around for a long time or I'm extremely fit. I don't know. But I'm happy," said the four-time champion.

Besides winning match number 1,000, Federer also won the 2,000th set of his career by claiming the first in the contest.

On the women's side, Kim Clijsters took another huge step in her title defence, with the Belgian knocking out top seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) and putting the women's number one ranking in play.

The 11th-seeded Clijsters denied her Danish opponent after Wozniacki mounted a fightback from a set and 5-2 down, eventually taking the second set into a tiebreaker.

Wozniacki's loss means that the top-ranked player for the past two seasons will be replaced by number two Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka or Maria Sharapova.

"Obviously it's never fun to lose, but you learn more from your losses than you do from your wins," said Wozniacki. "I'll just go back and practise and try to come back even better."

Wozniacki remains without a Grand Slam title. She lost as Clijsters pounded a winner into the open court to earn a final-four match with Azarenka.

"It was important to stay focused one point at a time. I was the best I could be," said Clijsters, who took almost constant icing treatment on the ankle she rolled in her previous match against Li Na.

Clijsters had been working with her personal travelling physio in the past 48 hours since upsetting China's Li.

"I'm very happy with the way I was able to move. It was so hot out there, as well, really tough. I think they were some of the toughest conditions I've ever played in. It was good to win in two sets," she said.

Azaranka, the third-seed from Belarus, secured a place in her second career Grand Slam semi-final with a 6-7 (0-6), 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Agnieszka Radwanska, her 10th victory in a row this year after taking the Sydney title.

Azarenka needed a massive turnaround after taking a 7-0 hammering in the first-set tiebreaker against the Polish eighth seed Radwanska.

She then proceeded to reel off seven games in a row, levelling the sets at one apiece and earning a lead in the third and then breaking Radwanska for 3-1 to provide the margin for victory in a shade over two hours.
