Let us pause to pay homage to one of the great disco vocalists of all time. With the recent passing of Loleatta Holloway, dance music has lost another brave voice to father time. In this mix, Ben takes Ellis D’s unauthorized pressing of Loleatta’s epic spoken word riff from Better Days, one of NYC’s finest disco venues from the late 70’s, and lays it over a 112 minute mixtape that combines some classic house jams with new cuts from the crates. The spirit remains.

Part 2 of this series takes us into the depths of New York nightlife in the early 90’s, when clubs like the original Sound Factory, the Palladium and Red Zone were the breeding grounds for new forms of dance music. What was most striking about this era was the unique blend of mainstream artists with underground house remixes, resulting in accessible yet innovative grooves and hooks. Unlike the dance music of today, the tracks were actual fully developed “songs” rather than snippets of usable material, and their ability to remain fresh 20 years on is truly a testament to the quality of their productions.
