Actually took the design of the building and created a 3d design - utilized unique color coordination program to assign individual tailored designs for the building staff.

Socially Responsible Design

Supporting the design and ad work for a program to shift military spending to education - www.truemajority.org

3 pigs - 1 large (Pentagon budget) 1 medium (Education budget) 1 small (Foreign aid)

Bus design - upside down bus

Corporate Design

Small amount of work done for corporate design - assisted with the Annual Report of the worlds largest lighting company

Things I have learned in my life so far:

Closes his studio once every seven years for a year to spend a year on his own projects. Different ability to explore ideas when there is no pressure. Mentioned the Google 20% rule to pursue interests / projects - innovation.

After the year closure - when he reopend the studio, clients were waiting and gave him unprecedented freedom to design. Philosophy regarding client's change - what one can't have, one wants.

Lessons in life:

Everything I do comes back to me

Trying to look good limits my life

Everybody always thinks they are right

Helping other people helps me

Works are derived from journal entries through his life.

Ah Ha Moments

Learning about the dynamic data reporting on the Guild site

20 Questions to evaluate an LMS

LMS / Web 2.0 Information from Lance Dublin and Bryan Chapman

Innovation occurs more in groups than individually

Espresso Learning 3: Virtual Worlds, David Anderson

Use of Second Life - demo of a mockup of the conference site - use of principles / technology available to replicate the 1st world.

Use Marketing to help drive the adoption of Second Life - could be called a "3D Web"

Still working on ROI for use in Corporate World -

Consumer Education - experiential training - provide insight into environments not normally accessible (behind the scenes for businesses, restricted areas)

Second Life a communication tool above all else.

Checked out Wendy's Rap Training Video from the '80s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWSRGfttGCU

Espresso Learning 2: Social Learning, Kevin Jones

Traditional Training - compliance / rules / formal knowledge
All the rest - social learning - using Web 2.0 tools

Four Goals:

Get info out of people's heads

To share information

Find the information when you need it

Find the amount needed

Social Learning could be considered similar to Performance Support

Assess the environment and ability to move toward this type of learning / sharing of information. Social Learning dependant upon user generated content - wiki's, blogs, Sharepoint sites

Turn weakness of liability into strength - using these environments the corporation has more visibility - info is already being disseminated and done through e-mail and other interactions.

Make this learning a necessary part of someone's work.

Project Managment - great application of this type of learning - constant need for updates will drive users to the site.

Don't use the terms: wiki's / blogs

If someone e-mails with a question - redirect them to the forum / wiki and then others can view the information. All depends on expectations and business demand

Difference between: Situation / Scenario / Game
Simulation: just a model of a system - self directed learners - not good for novices
Scenario: choose an initial state and an end state
Game: scenaro has been tuned to the right mix - becomes a game

Linear scenario: building on previous experience
Branching scenarios: series of what if's
Engine driven / rule driven: interaction - introduces randomness

Challenge / Meaningful problem / Thematic Story / Experience : components of a successful simulation

Sim City Simulation Development: Rules 1/10 of the work - Tuning the experience 9/10 of the work

Set metrics and test to achieve it - story & media important

Get the design right - right engagement and decisions up front first - otherwise bad experience

A good game is a series of interesting decisions - place all information within a meaningful context

Learners don't make random mistakes - they make principled mistakes (wrong tool for the task being used)

"It's not what you put into the game - it's what you leave out"

Start with a concept document - who is the audience and what do they need to know. Prefer ROV - Return On Visibility

Alignment: Hot topic, having a business background has helped to understand the business needs as they relate to training. Book: Roy Pollack - 6 Disciplines of Breakthrough Learning - handbook for Chief Learning Officers - D1: define business processes

Designing the complete learning experience - desire to drive the complete experienced / business transformation

Continuous Business Experiences (CBE's) - involve committment to change, lean forward media / engagement of people to experience of learning

Lance:

Social Networking - how do you see this impacting business
Bob:

His children are telling him e-mail is dead. Believes in the impact of social networking
Would like to see corporate America embrace the iPhone - only takes a few to push this through.

Fit & Stick Approach to recruiting - looking toward the ability for employees to gain a position and stay within the organization.

TDS - must do competencies, career development history, profile (facebook) interface for profile information

Lance:
Simulations and Games - where do you see this going in training

Bob:
As a parent interesting to see - son engrossed in flight, uses flight simulator
VATSIM - Retired Airline Pilots are air traffic controllers for the Microsoft Flight Simulator program and all those flying in simulators.

Flip Video- future of podcasting - device has four buttons - on/off, play, record, delete

For a great perspective on this session, check out Clark Quinn's blog post: http://blog.learnlets.com/wp/?p=313

Keynote Q&A: John Patrick

Q&A with John Patrick, facilitated by Lance Dublin

Lance:
Killer App e-mail? Specualted prior as Education being the Killer App

John:
e-mail cuts across all - continues to be reliable - save what you sent/receive - uses X1, continuously indexes your mail across all folders. xobni - tool for indexing e-mail, actually inbox spelled backwards.

John:
Contact Us button is so lame! Its for companies, not the users.

Lance:
Were limited by learning how we learn? Explain your thoughts on this:

John:
Age not an issue - based on environments - see Librarians as a growing role in helping people learn

Lance:
"White box of hope" - How do you see search fitting in?

John:
Search is driving lots of things. Talk about Google taking over, but so was said about IBM and Microsoft. Search is becoming more vertical to be more usable. Zilla for real estate. Vertical search engines helping narrow results. Mashups helping aggregate information.

Audience:
Impact of eLearning in 3rd world - can it get better.

John:
There is no longer a 3rd world as related to the Internet - only 1 world. Zimbabwe had an Internet cafe with 2 computers and 56k access. People everywhere want to learn - despite their governments. It will become difficult for governments to control the Internet. The rise of Proxies. Proxy helps people in China with relatives in U.S. to go around filters that the government has in place to surf the Internet.

Audience:
Recently met Don Tapscot, technology is air. Son asked him "who invented the 40 hour work week?" He can get more done in less time.

John:
Work is changing. Studies show that people who work from home get more done and are more effective, even those with kids. Lot of companies still don't buy in to this - if they can't see you, you're not working. Thinking from the 1800's. Companies put in place restrictions on their networks not only for security, but to pull people into the office.

Knovel - Fortune 500 uses this company. Target client is librarian.

Audience:
IT Mgr - question regarding the impact of texting and the language showing up in e-mails. Is this unprofessional or is it going to become acceptable.

John:
In the future technology will take care of this. Voice recognition may take care of this - getting better than ever before. Regarding the communication side - young people love to text - depends on their e-mail and responsibility in life. Texting won't replace their writing.

Audience:
How the new generation learns. Feeling "ancient" in how his nieces and nephews learn. Questioning the K-12 education.

John:
Audience knows more about education than he does. Home Schooling is in the millions. Those parents feel the K-12 system is broken. Argues that children learn fast, but could even learn faster than currently happening. Book, "The Singularity" the merging of technology and humans.

Audience:
Mark Cuban called the Internet boring.

John:
Doesn't agree. A billionaire can say anything. There's so much out there with blogging, twitter, many reasons to blog - personal, private - not being read by the whole world - personal in one sense. Power to the people.

Lance:
Given all your years in IBM, why all this prediction?

John:
Can't speculate on what the Internet will be like in 10 / 20 years. But does know the current use and available technologies have great potential for growth. Looks at foundational technology and sees the potential. Things can come out of nowhere and have major impact. All he can say, "its becoming more empowering for people." Concerned about the regulating of the Internet by the providers and their lawyers.

Audience:
As information continues to double, information is coming from other places - will there be an ability for translation when data comes from foreign countries?

John:
There are sites doing this already - 5% of the way there. But labs are developing technology to translate voice, speaking in one language and hearing the translation.

Opening Keynote - Wednesday 4/16: The Future of the Internet, John Patrick

The Future of the Internet: and what it means for learning
John Patrick: Visionary, Author, Former VP & Chief Internet Strategist at IBM, President Attitude LLC

The Big Picture:
The Internet: fast, always on, everywhere, natural, intelligent, easy, trusted...
Session focus is on the experience of the Internet - how it still has a long way to go to become more user/customer focused - companies must break free from the confines of the "real" world - attitudinal problmes. (example - security question - regardless of what your answer is, it must be minimum 5 characters - not user friendly) Systems must be available - 3 a.m. service is no longer acceptable in a global world

The opportunity is huge - challenges by the compliance officers - stop saying "No", we need to find ways to say "Yes"

Killer App - e-mail - smtp - most e-mail goes unanswered

Customer Service in the Internet age - cannot be confined to the standard U.S. 9 to 5 / 1-800 existence - global new reality

ing direct - completely internet based bank

Healthcare Crisis in U.S.

30 to 40% of all cost is spent on duplicate procedures

100k people die each year due to medical errors

Liability insurance driving up cost

Technology could/should be used to make medical information more available/usable

Security and Privacy must be in place for digital medical records - but its a better option than current

Government and Education

Early leadership and innovation - U.S. Gov't supportive, so far have not regulated it - example of good use: IRS - efile

Empowerment of the grass roots

Lifelong learning via the web

Limited by learning how to learn

Schools and libraries will change - millions of children are now home schooled

Are we going to accomodate the Internet or are we going to give people choices, embrace the Internet? Provide access to all the data and all the processess (as authorized) when they need it and how they need it.

The Bubble: Bust or Boom?

The Internet was not the problem

Water does not flow uphill - start-ups thought revenue was money from investors

Same economy - new tools - realize that the internet is the tool for real solutions

Bubble #2? The tech sector is booming again - less likely to bust this time

The Internet: fast, always on, everywhere, natural, intelligent, easy, trusted...

Fast

Adam Smith's Invisible Hand - lobbyists don't want competition - outside the U.S. countries are embracing the providers - deregulating services, competition making the internet faster. U.S. has AT&T and their lawyers stifling speed. Verizon & Comcast helping to blur the lines of video and audio.

Optical Backbone - combining network traffic over existing power lines. Can the backbone handle all the new traffic? Yes. The routing of traffic and ability to utilize distributed hubs and networks will keep it running.

Torrents of Bits - ability to download huge files.

Shifting Bottlenecks

Always On

Dial - NOT!

IPEverything - appliances, cars, homes - all wired to the Internet - access to all things at all times - can be as secure as you want it to be.

WiFi and WiMax: reality exceeds the hype - deliver broadband into a community - people wait in lots of places, but it would be nice to have wifi access in those areas. The operators - providers - are finding ways to influence/lobby legislation to not allow open/free wifi access

France is working with its electrical companies to provide internet broadband for all

Stratellites (stratellites - blimps for wifi)

Pringle can - Cantenna - new way to span wifi for users

Everywhere

Where is the Internet anyway - wherever you are (or should be)

Ubiquitous browsers - Operamini.com best

iphone and android starting the race - technology not proprietary, but Apple leading the way - new generation of "iphone killers" - android is Google's platform for mobile browsing

"Long" distance? What is it now? Moving traffic across the internet (cost 2 cents) - huge profit upside for carriers when they charge int'l rates for phone

Voice 2.0 and Flash Innovation - Opera & Skyfire, Jingle Networks, CellSpinSoft, PCMobilizer, Tuktumi, Ribbit, MaxRoam, SMS Services

Natural

Social Networking not just social - profile is the problem - multiple sites with redundant profiles. Solution - 1 profile for many sites - restrict access to only those places you want

You Who? (User Generated Content)

Blogging/Podcasting revolution - NY Times said 2007 blogging had peaked - not even close - blogging is something you want to do - if you don't want to do it - don't.

Wikimedia - The Writable Web

Gaming exploding - skills are actually being developed in the process of gaming now with multiplayer games and gaming models

Let's play tag - The Long Tail

Intelligent

Ajax: content isn't what it used to be

Global Application Web unfolding

Everything at your service

Semantic Web - Lots of tags - data becomming smart / tagged

Easy

Open standards - the grass roots win

Linus changing the game

iPhone more than a brand name

IT infrastructure

Trusted

Security redefined

Privacy policy and framework essential

Linkage of brand and digital ID

Healthcare and Finance ready to go

Block bad things with technology - not law

How to Survive (and thrive)

Think Outside In - Listen to people

Think Big, Act Bold, Start Simple, Iterate Fast

Anticipate the evolution of the Internet

Build a framework for Choice and Services

Partner to the hilt

Get a taste of Net Attitude: talk to kids

patrickweb.com - NetAttitude book

To view the diagram of this keynote, please check out Clark Quinn's blog: http://blog.learnlets.com/wp/?p=311

Deep Dive: Ensuring Business Alignment: Marc J. Echols Ph.D.

Bellvue University - Human Capital Lab

Measuring Business Impact - 2 most frequently asked questions:

How do we decide what business outcomes to measure?

How do you know outcome measured resulted from the learning intervention and not something else?

Learning Intervention - a program with bounds and has impact - tied to:

Company Data - HR Records, Salary, Sales, Customer Sat

Analysis - Control Groups, Statistical Analysis, Business Linkage

Report - Business Outcomes

1. What to measure?

Business Goal: Revenue, Engagement, Recruitment, Leadership, Retention, Cost

Learning Intervention: Proj Mgt, Leadership Development, New Product Training, Mentoring, Bachelor Degree

What Companies are Measuring - dependant on business criteria, the appropriate learning intervention is applied. Different for every company.

2. Multiple Variables

Importance of the Control Group - demonstrates consistency in performance parameters - aids in demonstrating the delta in what the test group has accomplished in their improvement. If learning is deployed, and a delta can be seen - this is the roi.

Delta - Cost

ROI = -------------------

Cost

Chrysler Example: Training resulted in sale of 15.6 extra cars per sales person per year

Discuss at table:

Decide what business outcomes to measure

Separate the impact of learning intervention from other factors

Advocate budget to measure

Learning Infrastructure: Deep Dive - Bryan Chapman

Continuation of the Management Track

Tools for consideration in discussion:

LMS

Authoring Tools

Learning Content Managment

Off the Shelf

Virtual Classroom

Self-Paced, Self-Service - Online Learning

Informal Learning - Knowledge On-Demand

Traditional Learning Managment Model: serve up training (safety, new hire, knowledge) and march people through for completions.

Knowledge Managment - Centralized Knowledge Assets: transactional by nature

"Informal learning is simply that, which is not directed by an organization or somebody in a control position." Jay Cross

Web 2.0 and collaboration goes completely against traditional Knowledge Management principles.

What about tacit knowledge? Formal vs. Informal Learning - how do you gather tacit knowledge while keeping it in its most usable state, most current and real.

Discussion at tables - informal learning in organizations (what, how) - Sharepoint mostly used in organizations for informal learning - Fidelity has more than they can recall.

Case Study: Ameriprise

Issue: How do you offer consistent training to learners across the country?

Solution: Learning Community (by date of hire) meets together for training 10 weeks; 90 minutes; 3 times a week; 15 virtual sesses each day. Basis for his new book.

Gore-Tex: Innovation Powerhouse - "Elixir Guitar String" - each associate is to dedicate 10% of their week to "unassigned" time - innovation.

Designer decided to apply time to work on teflon coating for bike cables and thought about branching out to the animated characters - eventually had the product and concept move over to cutting edge guitar strings. Team began with one person 10%, convinced others to dedicate their time (10%) and after two years a team of 7 with no budget or Sr. mgmt approval had created a new product for the company that is now one of the best selling guitar string in the market. A good problem: feasible, worthwhile, contextualized, meaningful ISSUE: do instructional designers develop the problem?

2. Support active learning: difficulty identifiying relevant data, developing and articulating explanations, justifying their decisions, defending their decisions using appropriate criteria and evidence.

3. Fostering effective collaboration: enhances learning, but only works in a certain form; ask conceptual probing questions, provide detailed elaborate explanations, share their thinking.

4. Creating Artifacts: activity results in external artifact, physical models, reports and artifacts should address the problem. Collaboration is facilitated if it is mediated and should allow assessment of the process.

How do we get there?

Story from Book - Monopoly Game from Parker Bros. - Charles Darrow Inventor of Game - developed during the height of the depression - released in January 1935. Not original inventor.

Henry George - 1879 Economist - wrote "Progress and Poverty" - single tax endorser - tax only land. Tax a big hit with quakers. Woman took concepts from single tax idea and created first version of "Monopoly" but never called it that. Obtained a patent January 5 1904 - original concept of Monopoly Game - turned down by Parker Bros. in 1904.

The Innovation Process is a constant combination of many small ideas

Each idea builds incrementally on a chain of prior ideas

The innovation process is accelerated in collaborative teams

and when ideas are shared combination of ideas creates innovation

How can we transform our organizations? Shift from the Lone Genius to the Group Genius

Opening Keynote Introduction - Tuesday 4/15 8:30 a.m

David Holcombe - President and CEO of eLearning Guild - Introduction

As a community of practice - the guild is about sharing and provides infrastructure for members to collect, share and discuss information.

New Research - Snapshot Report on Learning Modalities - new and available on site to all members.

New Book - Best of The eLearning Guild's Learning Solutions

Lingos (non-profit int'l learning organization) - Presentation for Volunteer of the Year - Rose Jorgensen - developed course for stress relief program for voluteer workers.

Lingos - Partner of the Year 2008 - elluminate live! - product works with low bandwidth environments to push training.
