Five years ago, we launched this blog as a way to get to know your elected officials in a much different way.

It's really superficial and has nothing to do with actual governing. But we had just wondered, what if we turned politics into a beauty contest?

We'd like to use your help.

Feel free to nominate your hot elected officials for future voting.

As if having Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (pronounced pay-lin) win the recent Elected Hotties poll for female governors wasn't enough, now she's gone and won the heart of Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

We're just guessing the McCain crew had done its research and reached all the way across the United States and Canada and into the United States again to one of our nation's loneliest outposts — Alaska — to help combat the star power of the Obama camp.

We just like to think that we helped, because so many of you threw your votes behind Sarah before she won the Republican VP nod.

Here at Elected Hotties, we couldn't help but wonder if an Obama/Palin ticket would have been the hottest presidential ticket since the Taft/Sherman ticket of 1908. We're pretty sure that would be the case.

Alas and alack, our two hottest candidates are from different parties. But Sarah is a winner in more ways than one: Outdoorsy = hot. New governing culture in Alaska = hot. Former beauty queen = hot.

Editorial: Ode to the Others

So a few things need to be said and we are going to say them. Though we tirelessly hunt for the hottest of the hot all over the state, once we present the candidates to our voters the results are out of our hands.

However, there have been a few times when we have sat helplessly while who we thought were clear favorites were brutally trounced in the polls. We winced as the polls closed and often searched for answers. Sometimes, hottie candidate “groupies” rally support for a favorite and recruit voters, some find ways to vote more than once and sometimes the photos we have just don't do the hottie justice.

Take Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. Granted, he was up against Farmington Mayor Scott "the Stunner" Harbertson, which could be daunting for anyone. But Becker's charm and good looks should have provided for a much tighter race.

Then there is Sen. Pat Jones. She's a looker. We've seen her in person and she is very well put together: stylish, poised and nary a hair out of place. Not to diminish Sen Margaret Dayton's squeaker victory, but we feel the poll photo fell tragically short of doing her justice. Our bad Pat.

We applaud those who would be able to point out a bad picture to us and send us a more fitting one in the name of fairness.

Coincidently, the Senate men's race also had some of us scratching our heads. There is no doubt that Sen. Mark Madsen isn't too hard on the eyes. He's a tall drink of water with a winning smile. Nonetheless, EH feels that Sen. Scott McCoy was grossly overlooked. He is fit, tall with boyish good looks and a confident stride. How is it that he only got 13 percent of the vote people?!

Then in the Legislative finals once again Madsen comes out victorious against Rep. Greg Hughes, aka "Blue Eyes." Let’s face it, aside from those piercing baby blues he's got a set of playful dimples, raven hair and that oh-so-bronzed skin, yet he lost by a landslide. C'mon!

Hottest female official in Utah

Utah is buzzing, and not just because it's the Beehive State. Utah is buzzing for Amy Wicks, the Ogden City Councilwoman who was just elected the hottest female official in Utah.

This is a first for Elected Hotties, but a second for Amy, who was recently elected the hottest city councilwoman in Utah just two weeks ago.

From what we read, this honor couldn't have gone to a more deserving person. Not that the rest of the candidates wouldn't deserve this recognition, but there's a lot to say about Amy's sense of humor, flair for tackling city issues and her good looks.

This week, it's St. George Councilman Jon Pike, who is at the peak, the pinnacle, the apex of hotness that can be obtained only by the hottest male city councilman in the state.

...Ogden Councilwoman Amy Wicks.

Our 20th Elected Hottie won a major battle of north vs. south over the past two weeks. An aggressive campaign to elect St. George Councilwoman Suzanne Allen got under way shortly after our poll was launched. But Amy had her share of local support, too.

So, what makes Amy so hot? Here we go:
According to her bio, she's been elected twice to the Ogden City Council and is the council's chairwoman. She works for the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome and was interviewed last week by STLtoday. When she's not debating the future of Ogden's water system, she loves (deep breath) snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, climbing and whitewater kayaking.

And you voters really came through for your councilwomen. The poll's 457 votes is an all-time record for Elected Hotties. Amy and Suzanne also broke records for votes cast for a winner and runner-up. Thanks for showing your support to these women.

I've received several awards through the years, mainly for accomplishments or service to my community- but nothing quite like this. I'm really at a loss for words, which for those who know me...is rare. Thank you for this unique and lighthearted honor.

Having been told countless times that I look almost exactly like my mother (except I'm four inches taller) I guess I should give some credit to her. Thanks mom, for giving me your good genes, as well as making me wear sunscreen and begging me to eat my fruits and vegetables.

On a parting note, I'm going to put a plug in here to vote for Paul Cutler of Centerville in the next poll. We are both are Viewmont High School alums from the late 1980's/early 1990's.

Not much voter turnout for this poll. What's your problem? We thought that if we actually gave you something to vote for, unlike this year's primary election, you'd turn out in droves. But you didn't, slackers.

Nevertheless, those who voted helped us pick Kaysville Mayor Neka Roundy as Utah's hottest female mayor. This former city councilwoman rose to the office of mayor in 2005 and can be spotted hosting a "Walk With the Mayor" event around Kaysville.

A true senate majority

Not only is this Utah senator in the majority party, but he won the our most recent poll with more votes than anyone ever. He didn't get 100 votes or 110 or 120. Mark Madsen got 127 votes!

There's something going on here, something that can be explained by the following statements:

When the Boogeyman goes to bed at night, he checks his closet for Senator Madsen.
Senator Madsen does not sleep. He waits.
Superman owns a pair of Senator Madsen pajamas.
Senator Madsen doesn't wear a watch. He decides what time it is.
Senator Madsen can slam a revolving door.
Senator Madsen knows the wrong way to eat a Reese's.
