Jonesborough businessman and first time candidate Dan Eldridge took 34 of 41 precincts Tuesday, May 4, 2010 to capture 51.31 percent of the 13,028 votes cast in Washington County. Eldridge said his message of “running government like a business” resonated with voters. ”I would like to thank the voters of Washington County and all of the people who supported me throughout this campaign,” Eldridge said. “We stayed focused on the need to attract new jobs to our community and to control spending.” Eldridge is already working on a transition plan with long-term Mayor George Jaynes who has held the office for more than 20 years. The other two candidates in the race Don Arnold and James Reeves, captured 34.56 percent and 14.05 percent of the vote respectively. Although the race was a Republican primary, no Democratic candidate is running in August so the winner of the primary is the next Washington County Mayor. Eldridge will be sworn in shortly before he becomes Mayor on September 1. Please click on the photo link above to see Tina Wilson’s election night photos from Jonesborough.

Election day is almost here. The choice for Washington County Mayor is clear. Dan Eldridge brings 25 years of business experience to the table. He has created from the ground up a business that matches the size of Washington County in terms of number of employees and size of budget. Dan’s top priority for residents of Washington County is jobs. If elected he plans to be the “number one salesman” for the county as he reaches out to bring positive economic development and growth to our region. Dan’s other priorities are bringing sound business principles to county government to help it run more efficiently and opposing tax increases. Dan is a graduate of David Crockett High school and ETSU. He and his wife Tammy (a graduate of Daniel Boone High School) have been married over 25 years and have three children. Cast your ballot for Dan Eldridge for Washington County Mayor on May 4th. Together, let’s make a great county even better!

In case you missed the April 27th edition of the Johnson City Press there is a terrific letter to the editor written by a 23-year-old Dan Eldridge supporter. Here it is in its entirety:

Elect Eldridge

“Now that early voting has begun the excitement of the upcoming election is more apparent than ever. What a wonderful opportunity Washington County has to elect Dan Eldridge for mayor.

I am 23 years old and have known Dan the majority of my life. At the age of 12, I got the opportunity to go with our church on a mission trip to Mexico. Dan was along on the trip. What an experience. We slept in tents, took cold showers from a water hose, and worked tirelessly, experiencing firsthand the intolerable conditions of their daily life.

I remember being so impressed that a successful businessman like Dan would take the time to do this. He has such a humble spirit.

Since then, there have been countless times throughout the years that I have seen Dan and Tammy donating their time and resources to our church, our community and many charitable organizations. They are constantly giving selflessly, meeting the needs of others.

Now Dan wants to serve our county and give back to this wonderful area he grew up in.

As a recent college graduate, I know the frustration that we as young adults have with the lack of job opportunities in our area. Dan will work to change this. He is committed to bringing jobs to this area.

But not only is it his goal, he has the capabilities and drive necessary to do so. Through his many accomplishments, he has a proven record of success in the business world.

He has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to lead effectively, always exemplifying the integrity of which Washington County will benefit.

Dan is not running for mayor for any selfish gain, but rather for his love of our great community and the desire to make it even better.”

Tara Lorencen

The Johnson City Kiwanis Club and the Johnson City morning Rotary also hosted the candidates. Dan said he is opposed to any tax increases at this time and his 25 years of management experience have prepared him to hold the line on spending while seeking new avenues for growth in Washington County. “I have a vested interest in the future and that is my three children, (ages 12-18),” he said. “I know what it takes to recruit new business and I will use sound business principles in managing the county.”

Two forums are slated for next week. The GOP women’s event takes place on Monday at 11:30 at Beasley’s and the Young Republicans forum will be held on Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm at the Jonesborough Storytelling Center.

Dan stressed that if elected Washington County Mayor he will make jobs and economic development for our region his number one priority. Karen Wise Bennett and Pam Daniels led the volunteer effort in planning the event and even baked delicious home-made cookies for the gathering. Election day is May 4th and early voting is April 14-29.
