Learn how to Flash a Nokia Mobile Phone By Using PC Using Phoneix & Navifirm

Not many words just quick glance at how to use use of Phoenix to flash a Nokia smartphone. Before we proceed to Flash lets understand the meaning of flashing, it means re-installing phones firmware (OS) files.

Please carefully follow the instructions as mentioned below:

1. Download and install Phoenix Service Software 2011 in your PC/Laptop.

2. Download and install the latest version of Navifirm Click here

3. Open Navifirm select your Phone Model and Code and wait for a while until it loads “Releases” select a suitable release. Again wait until Navifirm loads “Variants” (i.e. Product code of the phone which you can find at the sticker usually below battery)

4. After downloading firmware files, create a folder RM-XXX in C:\Program files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products and copy those firmware files in the folder.

(RM-XXX where XXX is your product code(for e.g. Nokia 7210 supernova product code is 436, so RM-436)

5. Launch application “Phoenix” in PC and connect your mobile via Data/USB cable (Select PC Suite mode).

Note - if you have dead phone, means phone is not starting at all, use Dead Phones Flash. To being able to tick dead phone flash delete the USB connection in phoenix. then make it go into "no connection". then open the RM-XXX. the dead USB flashing will now be enabled.

6. Now Choose File>Manage Connection>New>USB. It will then search your USB ports for the phone. When it finds it, hit Finish. Once it has done scanning, Apply then close

7. Select “Scan Product” from the File menu. As soon as scanning is finished, you can see your model of phone and other details at the bottom screen

8. From the Flashing menu, choose Firmware Update

9. Wait for Phoenix to continue looking into to the phone. You will see some information scroll by in the firmware Update window.

- Browse
- See the product code section. You should find your product code in that column.If you see “YOUR” product code, fine otherwise press on the “…” in the given prCode section.

You should see RM-XXX, select that. Variant version =00.

If you will select “Refurbish” so that it will restore it to factory set (Clean and default C:)

10. Hit start and ignore the warning and click yes. Now your actual flashing has started. Don’t touch your phone or press any button until the flashing has finished. Also don’t touch your data cable and your computer system.

11. At the end Phoenix will tell you to remove your phone as the flashing has finished.

12. Now wait for your phone to reboot into latest firmware.

WARNING: Phone flashing is a tough as well as risky; please don't try unless you are sure.

Title says it all͵ we shall not be discussing some rocket science kind of process͵ however I shall highlight a super cool little device with the capability of getting you rid of USB cables. Generally at home we all have different gadgets and devices and most of the time just to transfer a few files between our desktop and other smart tech devices we end up wasting our time in looking for conpatible cable. So to get rid of this hectic situtation. I bought a half inch͵ around of 100 INR bluetooth USB dongle with plug n play functionality.

How To Backup apps as .apk files from Android Phone

Sometimes you need to send your installed android apps or games to your friends. But unless you have the installation apk file, you won’t be able to send them directly. One way to overcome this problem is to extract apk from the installed apps and send it via Bluetooth or some other ways. Here, I'll share two methods which are found easier to extract apk files from android apps which are downloaded from android market.

Method 1 - using ASTRO file manager.

you can download ASTRO file manager from android market. To extract apk:

Open ASTRO file manager.

Touch the menu button and click tools, then select Application Manager/Backup

Choose the applications and click backup.
The extracted apk will be stored in SDcard/ backups/apps

You can do the same using ES file manager also.

One disadvantage of method 1 is it can’t extract apk files of system apps. The ASTRO will not display stock application to backup. We can overcome this difficulty by choosing the second method.

Method 2 - Using Airdroid

This method is the most efficient and is simple too. Read my previous post to know how to get connected using airdroid android application . Its very simple. After you got connected:

Click apps from PC, a window will come with a list of all applications including system apps and application that are installed from android market and third-party apps.

Select the application you want to extract and click Export. It will be downloaded to your PC as an apk file.

How to make Windows 7 Bootable USB Pendrive

Hi, Many of us face a lot of problem when we have to reinstall windows on our computer or laptop. First thing we have to decide from where to install windows? The options available are DVD or USB Pendrive. In the latest new netbooks, mostly there is no DVD drive. So if you want to install windows you have to go with the other option, i.e. USB Pendrive. So here I give a brief and 100% tested tutorial on how to create a Windows 7/8 Bootable USB Pendrive to install Windows 7/8 from USB Pendrive.

First thing, you should check whether your BIOS supports booting from USB. Most of the computer/laptops support. But if your BIOS doesn’t, then sorry, you cannot boot from a USB Pendrive.

Second thing, you need another computer with Windows installed with a DVD drive, to copy its contents later.

So let us start with the procedure now:

Run command prompt (cmd). This can be done by clicking start and typing typing cmd in Windows 7. In Windows Xp, click on start and then click on run. Type cmd and run. This will open the command prompt which will look like this:

Then run diskpart utility from command prompt, by typing ‘diskpart’ on command prompt and pressing enter. This will run the diskpart utility in a separate windows, which is shown in 2nd picture below:

Now put in your pendrive in a USB port. Your pen drive must be atleast 4 GB, 8 GB pendrive is best for this purpose. Now go back to the diskpart console and type ‘listdisk’ and press enter. This will list the various storage devices available. You can see the size column of the disk and here we can see that ‘disk 2′ is our pen drive. Warning: In your computer it may be some other number. In our case it is ‘disk 2′.

Then you have to type ‘select disk 2′ and press enter. Note: in our case it is disk 2, in your case it may be disk 3, or disk 1 or any other number. You can enter ‘detail disk’ to see the details of the disk after selecting it to verify that you have selected the correct disk. You can see these steps in the image below:

Then you have to run a series of commands. The commands to be run in the order are:

-clean
-create partition primary
-select partition 1
-active
-format fs=fat32

These steps are shown in the image below:

The format step will take some time. You can have a tea or coffee in the meantime and come back. After the format is complete you have to run ‘assign’ command. And after this you can exit diskpart utility by entering the ‘exit’ command. The steps are shown below:

-assign
-exit

- The image below shows all the steps taken from the first step:

After this complete, put in your original Windows 7 DVD in your DVD drive, or if you have an .iso image of the DVD, mount that image using any virtual drive software like Power ISO or Daemon Lite

- Now go to My Computer, and open the contents of DVD Drive. Press ‘ctrl+a’ to select all contents and copy all the contents by pressing ‘ctrl+c’.

- Now go back to My Computer and open the USB Drive and press ‘ctrl+v’ to paste all the contents of DVD into the USB Disk.

When the copy finishes, you are done just remove the USB Drive safely and use it to install Windows 7 in your computer/laptop.

The Nokia Lumia 800 marks the next big step in the Finnish phone manufacturer's evolution and in concordance with Darwinian Theory, this evolutionary step has come about to ward off threats of irrelevance and (ultimately) extinction. And don't be fooled, this is a massive step for Nokia where it is essentially putting its future in the hands of others.

Nokia loyalists will be glad to know then that while the Lumia 800 is far from perfect, it's a confident and sure step forward by the Finns into a still unknown future. Here's why.

The Lumia 800 is one of those rare phones that can kidnap a conversation and make itself the center of attention.

Features

To make sure that they are competitive in this new race, Nokia has given the Lumia 800 best-in-class specs. The Lumia is powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM and has 16GB of internal storage. However, the Lumia doesn't support external memory so you'll have to make do with the built-in memory. The Lumia sports a 3.7-in AMOLED display with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. Imaging is taken care of by an 8MP autofocus camera with a dual-LED flash. Unlike most phones in its price-range, the Lumia strangely doesn't have a front-facing camera for video chats.

Connectivity options on the Lumia 800 include GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G (HSDPA 14.4Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps) support. It uses a microUSB cable to connect to the PC and charge. The Lumia 800 also uses a microSIM card, so you'll have to either get yourself a new microSIM or get your regular SIM cut down.

Windows Phone 7.5

Now that Nokia has adopted Windows Phone, the Lumia 800 will serve as an introduction to the new OS for a whole lot of people. Windows Phone is closer to iOS than Android with respect to the fact that it simplifies a whole lot of things while removing some extra options. However, it's very different looking and feels very different to use in a good way. Windows Phone will especially suit first-time smartphone users, and if you've been using non-touch feature phones so far, Windows Phone is a very good introduction to the smartphone OS because, most importantly, it doesn't compromise on usability.

Unlike Android, the Windows Phone UI (known as Metro) doesn't rely on multiple homescreens or widgets of different sizes. Instead you have one vertical scrolling homescreen on which you can pin anything from a contact, a website, a song, a video etc. Everything is pinned to the homescreen as a tile- a square/rectangular icon. Some of the tiles are static and work as a simple button while some tiles (such as the e-mail tile, people tile etc.) work as widgets and display real-time updates/notifications or animation. Removing a tile from the homescreen is as easy as holding down on the tile and choosing the remove option from the drop-down menu. Pinning anything to the homescreen is also equally simple.

One of the main constituents of the Windows Phone OS is the People hub that's basically an amalgamation of your phone contacts book and contacts on social networks. Once you setup multiple accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live etc.) on the Lumia 800, you can post updates, write to friends and contacts (as both messages and social networking posts) and check your social networking feeds from within the People hub. I found this very helpful and I was able to use the phone and engage in social networking without needing to install separate apps or clients.

However, there are a bunch of issues with Windows Phone in general and a couple of them sound really silly and basic. For instance, you can't add a song directly from your in-phone music library as a ringtone. Instead, you'll have to use the Zune desktop software to edit the song and classify it as a ringtone. And unlike Android (and somewhat like iOS devices), Windows Phone devices don't have a mass storage mode so (unless you perform a registry hack), there's no way to just attach the phone to your PC and use it as a USB drive. If you do want to transfer files to the phone, you'll have to start up Zune on the desktop and sync files. However, Zune only supports multimedia files, so if want to transfer documents you'll have to take a roundabout way such as e-mailing the files to yourself, or using a third-party app. However, Zune has some benefits. For e.g. if you have videos or music on your PC and aren't sure if the Lumia supports the format (and provided Zune recognizes it), you can just ask Zune to sync it to the phone and it will automatically convert it to an acceptable format and transfer it.

Being a WP device gives the Lumia 800 access to the Windows Marketplace app store and the Xbox Live store. The former is a well-designed app store that provides access to about 40,000 paid and free apps and is gaining popularity with over a lakh downloads a day. The latter is linked to your Xbox Live profile and gives you access to a substantial number of premium downloadable games. The noteworthy feature of both storefronts is that you can download any paid app and try it out first before spending money on it.

Like other WP devices, the Lumia 800 also comes pre-installed with Microsoft Office, which is one of the best mobile office suites I've seen on a smartphone. Not only does the suite let you view and edit Microsoft Office files but also lets you create Word docs, Excel sheets and notes in OneNote. Another great pre-installed app (which is free only for Nokia's WP phones) is the Nokia navigation suite that includes Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive and in a time when free navigation apps are still not available on most GPS enabled smartphones in India, it's a very good bonus.

Design & Usability

The Lumia 800 is one of those rare phones that can kidnap a conversation and make itself the centre of attention. It's a beautiful device that uses the same body Nokia built for the unfortunate N9. While the body is built with plastic, it's of the poly-carbonate variety which means that it's not as flimsy as the plastic that Samsung tends to use even on its high-end phones. However, both the glass-covered front and plastic covered back are highly susceptible to fingerprints and various smudges. The Lumia 800's build quality is very solid and as a result, the back panel can't be removed. The Lumia is a little heavier than some high-end slim phones and is also not exactly slim. However, it does feel good in the hand.

The Lumia 800's great looks are further complemented by its great AMOLED display. The display is superb at displaying colors, especially black gradients. I compared the Lumia's display with the Samsung Omnia W's Super AMOLED display and while the Lumia scored higher in terms of displaying black and other dark gradients, when put side by side with the Samsung, it was clear that there was a yellow tint when the Nokia was displaying plain white colors. The Lumia 800's display also loses some visibility under direct sunlight but it still remains usable.

The Lumia 800's touch UI is fantastically responsive and there is no visible lag at all when scrolling through menus. The virtual keyboard in both portrait and landscape modes is also very accurate. In terms of usability, I can't really cite any issues that I faced with the Lumia 800.

You may stumble across a really annoying bug, once you started making calls with the Lumia 800. you may came across this issue a couple of times where the phone would take at least an extra minute to end a call after you might had pressed the "End Call" button. As a result, you would be unable to make another call until either the phone decided to end the call or you restarted it. As it turns out, a couple of forum discussions where other Lumia users reported the same issue. The Lumia 800's dialer also doesn't offer speed dialing but fortunately there are free apps available that add that functionality.

Otherwise, call quality on the Lumia 800 is good and voices sound loud and clear. The Lumia 800 also has a very good battery and it lasted me two entire days with the Wi-Fi on at all times

Browsing & Multimedia

While Internet Explorer may not have a stellar reputation on the PC, the IE browser on the Lumia 800 is excellent. Page rendering is accurate and touch response is also very good. The browser doesn't support Adobe Flash though and you won't be able to watch embedded Flash videos on websites (unless they're hosted on YouTube). It does support HTML5 and will come into its own once HTML5 adoption is more widespread. The IE browser offers important modern mobile browser features such as bookmarks management and support for multiple tabs.

Lumia 800's 8MP camera is a bit disappointing. The photos have contrast issues with the pictures coming out looking too white. Indoors too, when shooting against a white background, the picture quality looked average. On the other hand, the Lumia takes good macro shots and is very quick in focusing and taking photos. The 720p videos shot also looked really good but you may notice artifacts at times when playing the videos on a PC. If you want your smartphone to be your primary shooter, then the Lumia 800 probably won't meet your needs.

The Lumia 800 uses Zune as its primary media player. The Zune app is nice looking and the interface is very simple to use. As I mentioned earlier, the Lumia 800 needs the Zune desktop software to sync media files to it. Fortunately, the software supports most popular formats but it does take time to convert and transfer videos to your phone. Audio quality on the Lumia 800 is great and on-par with other high-end phones but its external speaker is quite poor and not loud at all. Video playback is also fine when it came to our test 1080p MP4 videos. However, Zune did a terrible job of converting 720p DivX videos. Overall though, provided you are willing to get used to working with Zune on your desktop, the Lumia 800 is a very good device to enjoy your multimedia files.

One thing that did set apart the multimedia experience on the Lumia is that you get immediate access to the Zune store which lets you buy music and videos easily and store them on the phone or on the PC. In comparison, the Apple iTunes store in India still doesn't let you buy anything apart from apps and there is simply no such option on Android phones here.

Bottom Line

The Nokia Lumia 800 is one of those phones that refuse to be "one-of-the-bunch". It stands out from the crowd thanks to, first and foremost, its looks and design. It's a phone that feels premium and is great to use and would be easy enough to use even for first-time smartphone users.

But once you look beyond the Lumia's looks and usability, cracks do begin to appear. For one, the Lumia 800 is expensive and there are a lot of shackles it has to contend with including no support for external memory, absolute reliance on Zune, an average camera and software bugs.

The Samsung Omnia W is another Windows Phone 7.5 handset that was recently launched and is priced a full 10K lower than the Nokia. The Omnia W may not be as good looking or usable a phone as the Lumia 800 but it's certainly a much cheaper alternative if you want to get a taste of Windows Phone.

On its part, the Nokia Lumia 800 deserves its "Very Good" rating for excelling in many aspects such as social networking, browsing and overall usability. My buying advice for you is to wait a while for the Lumia 800's price to fall closer to the 20K mark and for Nokia/Microsoft to fix the bugs before buying it.

Excel - Check to see if a value exists in a list?

Many times while using excel you have come across a situation where you have you need to check if a value exists in a list or not. Well its easy to check manually if the list is not long or you have plenty of time :P
However, there is a cool workaround here which I use always. believe me it has saved me a lot of time.

Formula= OR(INDEX([range of list]=[value],))

If the value exists in the referenced list then the output will be TRUE otherwise FALSE. For example in above image as you can see for yourself entry PEN does exist in the list so the output will be TRUE by default. There are many other workarounds and I shall be glad if you would like to share you own way with readers.

Fix Error - “Word Cannot Start the Converter MSWRD632.WPC”

Recently, I had a user in my office get the following error when trying to open a Word document:

Word cannot start the converter mswrd632.wpc.

Whenever the user clicked the OK button, it would simply pop back up. What was really weird is that if she clicked on the red X button, the document would open just fine! Strange!

The user was running Office 2007 and getting this error. After doing some research, we came across a few possible solutions. In this post, I’ll list them out here.

Method 1 – Unregister Text Converter

Basically, in Windows XP SP2 and above and Windows Server 2003 SP1 and above, if you have a plain text file or another kind of file that is not a Microsoft Word file, but has a .doc extension, you will get this error.

This can also happen if you are opening a really old document created by Word for Windows 6.0 or Word 97 documents. In this case, you can disable the mswrd632 converter so you don’t get this error. The files will then be opened by the Microsoft Office text converters.

You can unregister this converter by going to Start, then run and typing regedit. Then navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc

Right-click on the MSWord6.wpc key in the left hand pane and choose Delete. If you have a Word 97 document, you should still be able to open it in Word 2003 or 2007. However, you will not be able to open these files in WordPad anymore. You’ll get an error like:

Cannot load Word for Windows 6.0 files

If you really have to use WordPad to open Word 6.0/95 files, you can re-enable the Word 6.0/95 for Windows and Macintosh to RFT converter. Open the registry and go to the following keys:

For Microsoft Windows on Windows 64 (WOW) mode

If the Wordpad key is not there in the left-hand pane, create it. After that, create a new DWORD value in the right-pane called AllowConversion and give it a value of 1.

Method 2 – Copy the MSWrd632.wpc File

The other way to solve this issue is to copy the MSWrd632.wpc file from another computer to the computer having problems.

The only issue with this is that it is less secure and makes your computer vulnerable to a possible security hack, so don’t do this unless you really have to or that computer is not connected to the Internet.

You can usually find this file in the following path:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TextConv\

Increase internet Speed by tweaking QoS in Windows Xp

The following tweak has been tested with Windows XP only. however I am not denying that fact that these settings may be able to tweak and optimize Windows 7 internet and network speed. The default system behavior is that all 100% bandwidth is available, however, if there is a running application that indicates to the OS it needs to send high priority/real time data, then as long as it has the socket open, Windows XP will restrict “best effort” traffic to 80% of the bandwidth so that high priority traffic can be accommodated. Basically, applications can make this request to the operating system for QoS support using the QoS application programming interfaces (APIs) in Windows and this only applies if a specific app is requesting QoS. If you'd like to change how much bandwidth is reserved for QoS (the default is 20% of the total bandwidth), do the following:

Make sure you're logged in as "Administrator" (not just any account with admin privileges).

Navigate to START>Run and type: gpedit.msc

Navigate to Local Computer Policy > Administrative Templates > Network > QOS Packet Scheduler

In the right window, double-click the Limit Reservable Bandwidth setting

On the setting tab, check the enabled setting.

Where it says "Bandwidth limit %", change it to read 0 (or whatever percentage you want to reserve for high priority QoS data)

Click OK, close gpedit.msc

Under START > My Computer > My Network Connections > View Network Connections, right-click on your connection and under Properties (where it lists your protocols), make sure QOS Packet Scheduler is enabled.

The tweak desribed below helps boost priority for DNS & hostname resolution in general. What this means is, it helps web pages load faster, and has negligible effect on downloads (not counting the couple of ms gain with the host resolution at connect-time).

Applying this tweak assumes some proficiency in editing the Windows Registry using Regedit (Start > Run > type: regedit). As always, backup your Registry before making any changes so you can revert to the previous state if you don't like the results.

Most of us understand & knows the importance of Excel keyboard shortcuts. While it may be a good idea to know a 97 different shortcuts for everything in Excel, the fact is, you don’t use them all the time. So, it all boils down to memorizing the few shortcuts that you use all the time.

In this post, I am sharing 10 such shortcuts that I can’t live without, especially, when I am analyzing data, making charts and formatting my workbooks.

1. CTRL+1 – Format
I use this all the time, to format cells, charts, text boxes – you name it.

2. CTRL+SHIFT+L – Turn on/ off filters
Most of the time, I use filters to do ad-hoc analysis of my data. So, Once I set a couple of filters, If I want to revert back to full data, I find clearing each filter a pain. So I just turn-off and turn-on the filters, by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+L twice.

3. CTRL+Arrow keys – Navigate around the workbook
When it comes to dealing with data, navigate, you must. So I rely on CTRL+arrow key combinations all the time. Also, I use CTRL+SHIFT+arrow keys to select a group of cells

4. ALT+ES – Paste Special > Values
Copying and Pasting is another must if you deal with data. Often, I have to get data from other workbooks or clean the formatting of existing tables. So I use ALT+ES (press E then leave the key and press S) to paste special. Works like a charm!

5. F4 – Change cell reference style while editing formulas
Excel runs a pretty tight mafia when it comes to cell references. You must pay it a couple of $s if you want to change the reference style from relative (A2) to absolute ($A$2). But whos got the time to carefully navigate between A and 2 and then type SHIFT+4? So I use F4 key and Excel changes the referencing style for me.

6. F2 – Edit a cell
As simple as that.

7. F3 – Show Names
For simple workbooks I do not use names. But if I am making a dashboard or Excel model, I define several names and use them all the time. This is where F3 comes in handy. Just press F3, no matter where you are (formula editing, conditional formatting, data validation etc.) and you get a list of all the defined names. Pick one and press ok to add it to the formula etc. you are typing.

8. CTRL+K – Add Hyperlink
Hyperlinks make your work book accessible & pretty. So I use them all the time, especially, if I have more than a couple of sheets. Select a cell or shape and press CTRL+K to launch hyperlink box. Type the destination URL or location and you are done.

9. CTRL+T – Insert Table
Ever since I learned how to use Tables feature, I have never looked back. Nowadays, anytime I need to use a bunch of data, I convert that to a table and then use. Tables are flexible, they can grow & shrink, they allow you to write readable formulas (structural references) and they are lovely. Just select any cell in a range of related data, and press CTRL+T to make it table.

10. CTRL+S – Save
There is no point making something elaborate in Excel if you forgot to save. So I press CTRL+S every now and then. You never know when aliens strike!

Step 0: Like with everything else, switch off the modem, restart the computer, and turn on the modem again. Also clear the Internet cookies and browser cache. Problem gone? No, proceed to the next step.

Step 1: Temporarily disable your computer's firewall and close any anti-virus software that may be running in the background. If you are now able to access the websites that were previously not loading, your security program is causing the problem. As as workaround, you can add that site to the "trusted" zone in Internet Explorer and see if it works.

Step 2: Open your hosts file and see if there are any entries for sites that are currently unreachable from your computer. The hosts file is located in the following folder:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Step 3: Try a remote screen capture using Aviary. For instance, if the URL of the error site is abc.com, try opening aviary.com/http://abc.com in your browser. This will help you make sure that the site you are trying to access is not down at the source.

Step 4: Clear your DNS cache and run the ping and traceroute commands against the problematic site to make sure that it is not an ISP specific issue.

The new designs should be easy to implement and quick to load. It should take care of annoyances such as clicking the “next post” button at the bottom of the page every two minutes. With Dynamic Views, you get endless scrolling and dynamic loading of graphics as you go. As of now themes are not very customizable (only CSS or simply header image and background colors), but it should become more customizable in the following weeks.

Commercial DVDs are far too expensive to let scratches turn your video into a glorified coaster, but most people still don't back up their DVD collection. Once upon a time, the four to eight gigabyte footprint of a DVD on your hard drive was prohibitively large. But since the price of a gigabyte has plummeted, ripping your entire DVD collection to your computer is not just possible, it's prudent—and it's easy. Let's take a look at the best ways to back up and play any DVD rip on your home computer, along with how to burn a DVD rip back to a playable DVD.

What You'll Need

All you need is a PC with a DVD drive and a hard drive with some extra space.

You only need a DVD drive capable of burning DVDs if you want to burn your backups back to a disc you can play in a DVD player.

Set Up Painless DVD Ripping to Your Hard Drive

There are several methods for ripping your DVDs on your Windows computer, but let’s run down a couple of the best below.

Rip DVDs in One-Click with DVD Rip and DVD Shrink

Despite the fact that the freeware DVD Shrink (download) hasn't been in active development for years, this freeware decrypter, ripper, and compressor is still a favorite all-in-one stop for ripping and backing up DVDs. Its compression feature is what sets DVD Shrink apart, compressing 8GB dual-layer DVDs down to 4GB sizes that will fit on standard, single-layer DVD-Rs (i.e., the type of DVDs most consumers can burn to).

NOTE: DVD Shrink can break the copy protection on most DVDs without issue, but if you're having a problem, try running DVD43, which promises to remove copy protection from virtually any DVD, before you start DVD Shrink.

DVDFab HD Decrypter

Like DVD Shrink, DVDFab HD Decrypter breaks copy protection and rips the DVD contents to your hard drive. Unlike DVD Shrink, DVDFab does not compress the rip, so it's going to be the same quality as the original. DVDFab is actually a shareware app, but the trial version does full DVD rips and will even rip only the main movie.

Pros: DVDFab has a great reputation for cutting through copy protection, and it results in full quality rips.

Cons: Full quality rips mean lots of hard drive space per movie—around 8GB. If that's not a problem, more power to the full rip. If it is, DVD Shrink (with or without DVD Rip) will half that to about 4 or 5GB and might be more your taste. You might also consider ripping just the main movie with DVDFab if you don't want or need the extra features to save space.

Play Back Your Rips

Now that you've set up your computer to inhale any and every DVD you throw its way, you want to play these ripped DVDs. You could go one step further and encode them to popular compressed formats like DivX, but the rips you've already set up have their own charm for a couple of reasons.

First, ripping DVDs to the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders (the default output for these methods) means you retain the entire DVD structure, so watching the rip works just like if you were watching the DVD, complete with menus and special features. Second, these folders can easily be burned back to DVDs so that—in the event that one of your physical discs is damaged—you can just burn the backup and never miss a beat. Here are a few methods and apps you can use to play back these DVDs on your computer and burn new DVDs from the rips.

Play Back Ripped DVDs with DVD Play and VLC

VLC helps you to navigate and play back your ripped DVDs. All you have to do is point DVD Play at the folder where you're ripping all of your DVDs, and it provides a nice interface for browsing and playing back those ripped DVDs.

Play Back Ripped DVDs in Windows Media Center

If you're a Windows Media Center user, you can play back these ripped DVDs from directly within Media Center. In pre-Vista versions of Media Center, you can just add your rips folder to your My Videos library and they'll automatically show up as playable. The DVD library feature is turned off by default in Vista's Media Center, but all it takes is one small tweak to enable it.

Burn Your Backups to a New DVD with ImgBurn

Finally, if your physical disc gets damaged, you can always burn a new DVD from your backup (again, with DVD menus and all the extra features). This time, we're using a freeware application called ImgBurn. To burn one of your backups to a new DVD, just fire up ImgBurn and enter Build mode by selecting Mode -> Build from the ImgBurn menu. Now just click browse folder icon beneath the source dropdown and point ImgBurn to the folder of the ripped DVD you want to burn.

After you've selected the folder, insert a blank DVD and then click on ImgBurn's Calculate button to determine if your DVD has enough space to burn the backup. If you want to back up DVDs you ripped using DVDFab (all 8GBs), you'll need a dual-layer DVD burner capable of burning to 8GB dual-layer DVDs. If you've just got a regular old DVD burner that can only burn to 4GB single-layer discs (which I suspect is most of us), the DVD Shrink method above is your best choice.

Now, assuming you've got a DVD big enough to handle your DVD rip, just click the Build button (pictured) and let 'er burn. Note: If your Build button does not look like the button pictured, you need to switch to Device Output mode by clicking the small button to the left of the Build button to switch to Device Output mode—otherwise ImgBurn will want to create an ISO file on your hard drive rather than burn the disc.

New Features that makes Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich the Best

Google just unveiled their new Nexus phone, the Galaxy Nexus, along with a preview of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, coming to phones next year. Here's a look at the creamy new update to the Android operating system.

Most of what's gone into Ice Cream Sandwich is polish, making Android slicker, easier to use, and (finally) more consistent across the board. It's mostly filled with small improvements and tweaks that Google rattled off pretty quickly, so we've listed our favorites here in bulleted form. This isn't a comprehensive list; this is just what Google demoed at today's event—so there's probably even more to come.

Basic Improvements to Android

Google's made a lot of improvements in the way Android looks and feels, from the home screen to the notification drawer to the keyboard, including:

A new stylish lock screen, complete with facial recognition features that let you unlock your phone with a front-facing camera, as well as the ability to launch right into the camera with one gesture
A bigger emphasis on consistency with the way gestures work. For example, in the app drawer, you now swipe left to right to see other pages of apps, more like the home screens.
Widgets are now stored on another tab in the app drawer, making them easier to add to your home screen. They're also resizable.
Folders are now easier to create and use. Just drag one app on top of another, iOS-style to create a folder. You can rearrange them in the folder the same way, and it's all very fluid.
Ice Cream Sandwich's dock is customizable, and you can even put folders into it for quick access to apps and contacts.
Screenshot taking is now built-in. You can snap one by pressing Volume down + Power. Finally.

Notifications (pictured) are prettier and a tad more useful, showing small contact pictures next to notifications pertaining to email, SMS messages, and so on.
You can swipe from left to right to clear single notifications from the drawer, so your notifications aren't so cluttered. CyanogenMod users will be quite familiar with this feature.
You can open the notification drawer from the lock screen, without unlocking your phone. This is actually very convenient.
The new keyboard has better targeting, a simpler recommendations bar, and inline spell checking. Copy and paste has also been improved, and you can even select text and just drag it around within your message fluidly.
Speech-to-text now decodes your phrases in real time. When you say a word, you see that word show up in the window, before you move on to the next one—you no longer have to finish an entire sentence before seeing it show up in the text window.
A new default typeface, humorously labeled "Roboto" (but that actually looks pretty good)

Ice Cream Sandwich also sets the stage for button-less phones, à la the Honeycomb tablets. The Galaxy Nexus has no buttons on the front; it's all built-in to the OS. It also raises icon resolution, among other things, so it'll look good on higher-res phones—again, like the 4.65 inch, 1280x720 screen on the Galaxy Nexus.

The Browser

The browser has a few nice features, but the biggest is certainly bookmark syncing with Chrome. Now, Android's browser will automatically use your Google account to sync all Chrome bookmarks to your phone. It also has a feature that'll take you from a web site's mobile page to the desktop page in one tap, which is really great. Tab management is similar to the old browser, but you can now "flick" tabs away to close them, which looks almost WebOS-like. And, lastly, it has a new "save for offline" feature for those articles you want to save for later. It won't tear out the article and make it more "readable", like Read It Later does, but rather save the entire page in its current state for offline viewing.

Gmail

Gmail's entire interface has been revamped, featuring a very large, easy-to-read inbox with 2-line previews so you can more easily view your messages without even opening them. The action bar at the bottom has also improved, with simple buttons for creating a new message, viewing your labels, searching your inbox, and more. And, speaking of inbox search, Gmail now downloads the last 30 days worth of messages for searching, a value that you can change as much as you want in the settings. Lastly, when you're viewing a message, you can quickly transition to the next message with a swipe gesture—going back to their whole point of "making gestures consistent across the OS". It's a nice touch.

Calendar

The new calendar app is also nice, mostly in the realm of touch gestures. Like Gmail, you can swipe from side to side to move from day to day, and you can even pinch to zoom in on a specific block of the day. The whole thing is very smooth and fluid, moving as your fingers pinch to the exact block you specify.

Data Tracking

You can now track your data usage from Android's settings, and it looks really slick. Not only do you have the typical "this is how much data you've used this month" chart, as well as app-by-app usage to see which apps are the worst offenders, but you can pinpoint any block of time on the graph and see data usage for just that timeframe. For example, if there's a huge jump in data usage over a two-day period of time, you can "zoom in" on those two days and see which apps were using the most data during just those two days. It's a really effective way of tracking your usage. You can also add warnings for when you reach a certain threshold, or even cut off data usage entirely when you go over a certain level—ensuring that you never go over your data cap without your say so.

Camera & Gallery

The new camera app is designed to be fast and easy to use—they've minimized shutter lag, meaning the camera opens quickly and takes pictures instantly, without any loading time between shots. It's difficult to tell how well this will work on non-Galaxy Nexus phones, but the demo on the Galaxy Nexus looked fantastic. You can also access the camera right from the lock screen, making taking those spur-of-the-moment pictures near instantaneous.

The camera also has a built-in panorama mode, in which you just scan the camera from left to right to take a panorama shot—none of this taking-multiple-images-that-sort-of-fit-together business. It'll automatically stitch them together for you. Video recording has also improved, with continuous focus, zoom-while-recording, and time lapse features, not to mention the ability to take snapshots while you're recording video.

As far as the Gallery goes, you get this great "magazine-style" view with large thumbnails for your albums. You can browse your library by album, by location, or even by the people you tag in your photos. It also includes a simple photo editor, letting you remove red eye, crop, tilt, and even add Instagram-like filters to your photos.

People

The new contacts app—dubbed "People"—also brings this "magazine style", large-thumb nailed view to Android. It almost looks Metro-like even, with the solid colors and giant tiles. Even clicking a contact card in another app will bring up their quick contact card with a giant picture of their face, which is pretty good looking. And, when someone calls you, you'll see a full screen image of their face, not this tiny-low-res-thumbnail crap that's been in Android for so long. Google Voice messages seem to show up directly in the people app, hinting that Google Voice integration might be much tighter in Ice Cream Sandwich.

One of the cooler new "people" features is the ability to send canned text messages when someone calls you. If someone calls you and you're busy, you can just send them a text message that says "I'm busy, call you later" (or whatever you want) with a simple swipe gesture. There are currently apps that'll do this for you, but it's really nice to have it built in.

Android Beam

Last, but not least, is Android Beam, a new "Bump"-like feature built into Android. If your phone has near-field communication (NFC) capabilities, like the Galaxy Nexus, you can just touch two phones together to send data instantly. You can send articles, maps, or even Market links from one phone to another just by opening it up on one phone and touching the two together, back-to-back. It's one of those features that's very cool, but not so practical yet—especially since not a lot of phones have NFC built-in.

That's probably not everything you'll see in Ice Cream Sandwich, but it's a hell of a good start to a seriously polished iteration of Android. It may not have the most new features, but what it lacks in new, snazzy features it more than makes up for in ease of use and fluidity—I have a feeling this will reinvigorate my love for Android.
