March 2012 saw a selection of Cape Town’s electronic music scene come together in celebration of its existence. Through a series of development workshops, Satellite events and a core 3 day festival the process of presenting an annual look into the multi facets of South Africa’s electronic music scene had begun.

Now one year on, the CTEMF proudly reopens it window onto the ever-growing world of South Africa’s electronic music scene

Once again we reach back to the roots of how it all started, and discover what continues to inspire. Who has progressed and why and who are the names to watch. Which global artists shape trends in South Africa and more importantly who are the South African artists that are shaping trends globally.

2013 sees CTEMF proudly welcoming its first International guest, non other than Richie Hawtin. As one of the initial role players in the global Techno movement in early 90’s, he has continued to be a driving force both on and off stage, positioning him currently as number 2 Artist in Resident Advisor’s 2012 DJ poll.

Locally, CTEMF will once again present a selection of the absolute cream of the crop of our Electronic Music Scene. From scene originators and business leaders to the up & coming mavericks and industry revolutionaries.

There is no other festival like it in South Africa. It’s an ongoing, comprehensive collection and celebration of the ever-growing electronic music scene both locally and abroad. The CTEMF continues to strive for an inclusive view of the scene around it – Past, Present & Future.

Once again you are invited to rearrange your sonic geography.

Greg Reve is a South African producer whose prolific output of work over the years has made him more of an international underground Bass producer than a local big-fish-in-a-small DJ. Having release some incredible tracks over the years on the mighty Muti Music, either as The Triplet of Bellville, together with rappers Kid Clever and Sinister Dexter as the Realist, or just under the name his parents gave him.

The Red Bull Studio team finally had the chance to touch base (no pun) with Greg a month or two back when he came in to collab with iLL.Gates (more info on that to follow). After chatting, in the true spirit of the share-and-share alike Bass Music scene, Greg gave the Studio his ‘Unveilved” EP to upload to the Studio Soundcloud account for free download! What the fuckk… featuring collabs with renowned South African songstress, Tasha Baxter, and alt. Hip-Hop god, Anti-Pop Consortium, its an absolute corker of a release and a true gift to Bass-loving masses this Xmas. Take a listen and download below:

Famed for throwing some of the best parties around the world, Resident Advisor (RA) is excited to announce that it will be coming to South Africa as part of its global event series: RA Horizons.

Last year RA celebrated 10 years with its X series, staging ten events in the most essential venues in many of the world’s biggest electronic music hubs (London, Berlin, New York, Tokyo, etc.). RA Horizons has a different objective. This time RA takes a journey down the road less traveled to stage a series of parties that focus on the dedicated scenes that exist outside the established global club circuit. Places with devout crowds, savvy promoters and great venues, but where you can’t just stumble out the front door and see one of your favourite DJs every weekend.

So far they’ve brought Levon Vincent to China and Japan, Martyn to the Pacific Northwest, Julio Bashmore to Scotland and Dyed Soundorom to Norway and shone the spotlight on a host of hugely talented local artists. For their two events in South Africa, they’ve tapped RA’s #1 DJ in the world and probably the biggest personality in house music today: Seth Troxler.

Seth has just been voted the #1 DJ in the world for 2012 on Resident Advisor’s Top DJ poll by RA readers. Voted by registered members of the site, the list puts a global spin on something otherwise personal: your favourite DJ(s). Seth reaches nr. 1 this year, after finishing second in 2011.

It’s always hard to know where to start with Troxler: the Michigan-born 20-something has become an icon of club culture in the past few years, thanks to his label and DJ outfit (Visionquest) and his countless gigs around the world, which include regular spots as a festival headliner or performances at premiere clubs like fabric and DC-10 – the latter at which he enjoyed a residency in the 2012 Ibiza season. His inimitable charisma behind the decks only adds to his performance mastery.

RA founder Nick Sabine explains why he is excited about the Horizons series:

“Our readers come together from the four corners of the globe to share in a collective experience based on the music they love. After the success of our RA X series last year, we wanted to show appreciation – and shine the spotlight on – the readers, clubbers, DJs and promoters who contribute significantly to the worldwide electronic music community through their own dedicated scenes. “

Our first event in South Africa will happen on Saturday, December 15th in Johannesburg, a city whose long relationship with raves in the ’90s laid the groundwork for what has become one of the most important and fertile (if under-appreciated) house music hubs in the world. RA is teaming up with local promoters The Warm Up for a sunset session on the rooftop of the Citilec Building. Troxler will be joined by local export and Innervisions signing Culoe De Song, Warm Up founder Jack Gorton (AKA PhatJack), Jullian Gomes, Digital Rocket and Marshall.

The next night, Horizons will make its way to Cape Town for a party at The Assembly, a raw space that spent the first part of its life as a manufacturing plant and is now home to one of Cape Town’s best nightclubs. The main room will be soundtracked by Troxler, local techno torchbearers Killer Robot, Flloyd Lavine and Thibo Tazz. Sunday party crew Cold Turkey will take care of the Annex, a 200-person cavern tucked away in the west wing of the venue and have invited their A-list of Rebel Clef, Blotchy, Terrence Pearce, Big Space, Pierre Estienne, Richard the Third & Jakobsnake to soundtrack the night.

Tickets for both shows will go on sale at 9am South African time on Wednesday November 14th from www.ResidentAdvisor.net .

If you missed this party, you missed out! Bruno Pronsato graced our shores with his presence this past weekend playing a show in Jozi and CPT, bring with him is laptop and his own brand of techno/tech-house. Make Believe secured the CT Train Lodge as the venue for the Cape Town leg of the party, an amazing venue nestled on an old train platform between two converted carriages that house the ablution facilities. A fitting venue for a producer whose trademark driving techno imparts a feeling of locomotion. Playing his set through Ableton Live and launching clips live, with just the trackpad on his Macbook rather than a controller made for a set that was full of improvisation and extended build-ups. A party is good when the international headliner sticks around after his set, but if he decides to play another mini 30 minute set after the closing DJ then you really know… It’s been a while since I got that giddy feeling at house/techno party but Make-Believe really delievered. Their next event, The Make-Believe Train on Saturday the 24th of November, features a Metrorail train has been chartered (exclusive use to event guests only) to whisk away 300 party-goers, bound for The Glencairn Hotel.
