Spatially aware devices from Ishac Bertran on Vimeo

If you have a smartphone, especially an iPhone, you’ve probably heard about the bump app, where you can transfer contact info from one phone to another by bumping the phones together. Magic!

In this article it is explained how Ishac Bertran takes this concept even further, and while there is no bumping motion, the idea is that when you bring two of your devices together they sense each other with a half circle appearing on each device visualizing the connection. Then you can just drag and drop stuff from one gadget to the other. Easy-peasy!

Unfortunately this is not a reality yet, but it’s definitely on its way. Two students at MIT are working on Swÿp (pronounced swipe) a “piece of open-source software that facilitates cross-app, cross-device data exchange using physical ‘swipe’ gestures”. They are developing their application using technologies the devices already have. The idea is that it should work on any device that is touch-enabled and has WiFi. This means that you would only have to place the two devices beside each other, enable the application and swipe away!

I personally was never one to play with dolls as a little girl, I was more of a stuffed animal kind of person… Though perhaps I can kind of see the appeal.
But these customizable dolls are something that I have only seen on TV. They are the real, 3D versions of avatars for girls. You can choose hair color and style, color of the eyes, if you want them to have freckles and of course there is a wide selection of accessories.
In my opinion what’s more disturbing is that they have doll hospitals, hair salons and even personal stylist.

Ilona Szwarc, who calls the American Girl dolls “perhaps the most luxurious toys ever invented” has created a photography project taking portraits of real American girls with their American Girl dolls. Most of the time the dolls and their loving owners are even dressed the same (you can buy matching outfits on the website).

It took me a while to figure out why I found these images so disturbing, when I realized that not one little girl was smiling….

Anyone who works anywhere where clients are charged by the hour knows how important it is to charge for ALL the hours. And the only way is to keep your time-sheets up-to-date, a task most creatives find tedious and waste of their precious creative time. Because of this, bigger agencies might have trouble getting all their employees filling them out, but JWT and Casa figured out a effective way of “forcing” their workers; a system where if everyone manages to finish their sheets off by the end of Friday a giant refrigerator is liberated and free beer and cold beverages are dispensed!

I think we also need one of these in our studio… Just to make sure we fill in our PMSes, not because of free beer at all…
