<p dir="ltr">Women made up two thirds of the rise in unemployment over the last quarter, with the number of young people out of work risng to more than one million, an analysis of the latest figures by a left-leaning think tank has found.</p>

<p>The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) says women and young workers have born the brunt of rising unemployment over the last year.</p>

<p>Joblessness has now risen for the eighth month in a row and the UK&#8217;s unemployment total has hit 8.4pc, according to the latest official figures released on Wednesday.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>How would you describe your internship experience?</strong></span></p>
<p>Working at the Financial Times was an unparalleled opportunity of a lifetime. I was given a good flavour of Finance, Legal and Company Secretariat during my internship.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Can you outline some of the tasks you carried out as an intern?</strong></span></p>
<p>The majority of the internship was spent assisting on a rationalisation project of the FT group entities, which involved both legal and banking transactions towards our parent company Pearson. In light of the global recession, it was great to see such a pro-active efficiency drive. I was also involved in the signing of a big deal, which involved a tense, but exciting boardroom experience at Freshfields Law.</p>
<p><strong>Would you recommend the PDSIP to students in a similar position as you?</strong></p>
<p>Yes, the FT do not hesitate in giving you real responsibilities from day one and so you really get the chance to learn a vast array of problem solving skills. Whilst the learning curve is steep, there&#8217;s always been help at hand.</p>

<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">How did you find out about the PDSIP ?  </span><a href="http://www.elevationnetworks.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Yvonne_Omiyi.jpg"><br />

<p><a href="http://www.elevationnetworks.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Yvonne_Omiyi.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-1506 alignright" title="Yvonne_Omiyi" src="http://www.elevationnetworks.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Yvonne_Omiyi.jpg" alt="" width="100" height="108" /></a>When I graduated from university, I was keen on gaining a broad business experience. During my search I came across PDSIP and fortunately gained a place as a research intern at Penguin.  Without a doubt, my experience has lived up to all my expectations!</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Can you briefly outline some of your job roles during the internship?</strong></span></p>
<p>At the very beginning I was put in charge of a project to research technology to help improve the publishing lifecycle. This project was fantastic because it was very relevant to the work my line mangers were currently undertaking. I also enjoyed it because the open brief enabled me to reach out to other business using the technology such as the British Medical Journal and Financial Times, developing good communication skills in the process. I gained a sense of achievement from developing a recommendation which I presented to my line managers as well as staff from editorial and production.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Do you recommend this programme to other students?</strong></span></p>
<p>Throughout my time working, I was made welcome to staff meetings and encouraged to contribute. Everyone I’ve met has been open, wonderful and happy to take time out of their busy schedule to share their experience no matter the level of seniority. I recommend this programme to anyone interested in getting a varied experience at an exciting company.</p>

<p>The Pearson Diversity Internship Programme is a <strong>paid</strong> eight (business) or twelve week (journalism) placement within one of Pearson’s leading companies for bright and talented graduates from black and other visible ethnic minority backgrounds.</p>
<p>The internship runs from June to September each year and we have over 25 spaces in a variety of business functions including: <strong>Journalism, Marketing, Publicity, Editorial (books), Sales, Internal and External Communications, Project Management, Business Administration, Legal, Finance </strong>and<strong>Production (books)</strong>.</p>
<p>Selected interns will be asked to work on a specific project within one of the business areas.</p>
<p>The aim of the programme is to prepare you for a successful career in your chosen business area or industry, and where possible to retain your talent and ability within our companies.</p>
<p>But it’s not all graft and no fun.</p>
<p>We encourage our interns socialise with one another and build long lasting supportive relationships with each other, which continue long after the end of the programme.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Award &amp; Recognition</strong></span></p>
<p>The programme has won acclaim and awards including Race for Opportunity’s ‘Widening the talent pool’ award. The programme has also been recognised in the national and industry press as an innovative and successful programme for increasing diversity in the publishing industry. <p><strong>Further details of how thousands of young people will be helped into employment have been outlined in the Scottish Parliament today.</strong></p>
<p>Minister for Youth Employment Angela Constance announced that £8.5 million will be invested in projects to support young people into work. This includes:</p>
<p>* £6 million to create 1000 jobs for young people through a continuation of Community Jobs Scotland into 2012-13</p>
<p>* £2.5 million towards a challenge fund to support the third sector to work with employers, delivering 800 opportunities for young people.</p>
<p>This investment is the second tranche of funding from the additional £30 million announced in December to tackle youth unemployment throughout Scotland.</p>

<p><strong>As a boost to Apprenticeship week, the Prime Minister, David Cameron has announced further funding for apprenticeships up to degree level including:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>the £6m Higher Apprenticeship Fund which boosts degree level places;</li>
<li>£250m given directly to businesses, to enable them to take control of the way skills training is delivered; and</li>
<li>a new £1,500 apprenticeship incentive for small firms.</li>
</ul>
<p>Businesses and training providers can now apply to the Higher Apprenticeship Fund, employers are also now able to apply for the £250 million, and small firms are also now able to apply for the £1,500 to hire their first apprentice.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: left;">You are considering a career in finance. <strong>But how can you show employers what you have to offer?</strong> The BAT is your opportunity to showcase your knowledge and skills to thousands of employers.</p>
<p>The BAT is a three-hour online test, taken in a proctored (i.e. invigilated) environment at a Bloomberg LP office or a university hosted session. The BAT was designed with leading financial institutions and academics to uncover knowledge and skills relevant to a financial career. The BAT score shows what you have to offer to employers, you are given comprehensive feedback where you can compare your score globally.</p>
<p>The score is then publicised to over 20,000 companies, the BAT test is a platform for employers to access students. Employers can then contact students who fit their own criteria.</p>
