The Trial of Jean Rhys: Montparnasse

Exposure:Opera shows fragments and glimpses of arias, scenes, animated film and ambient music, featuring recent world premieres as well as future commissions and work in development. Presented in cabaret style, with a bar in the Linbury Studio Theatre, Exposure:Opera creates a relaxed environment to experience new work.

The Trial of Jean Rhys is an opera-in-progress developed at ROH2's VOX2 in 2010-11. Excerpts were shown at Exposure and Opera Europa in 2011 and will appear at Tete a Tete Opera Festival later this year.

On Saturday an international gathering of opera professionals met in London to discuss the future of opera. Among the works featured was The Trial of Jean Rhys (working title) by yours truly and Eleanor Knight. Said David Karlin in his blog (http://www.bachtrack.com/opera-europa-2011): 'I was particularly taken by a fabulous piece of intricate vocal writing by Welsh composer Elfyn Jones in a quartet from a new work about the later life of author Jean Rhys. If the work reaches full production, I’ll be first in the ticket queue.'
