Keynotes Abstracts in the order of the schedule:

-- Day One --

--------------------

+ Open Source Adoption Status: What statistics tell us

By: Felix Enescu (Romania) - VP Consulting & EXP for Romania, Gartner, Inc.
On: Friday at 09:00

The Open Source Software model continues to mature across markets, attracting more conservative users along the way. It is becoming not only impractical, but virtually impossible, for mainstream IT organizations to ignore the growing presence of Open Source Software within major segments of the IT industry. Failure to optimally manage the potential risks and rewards of Open Source will put IT organizations at an increasingly serious risk in the coming years.
--------------------

This presentation will provide a simple and practical overview of the common business concerns relating Free Software and Open Source licensing such as:
* Can I sell Free Software?
* When I build software using Free Software, when must I share my source code?
* Is it safe to use Free Software inside my company?
* What are the common business models built around Free Software?

+ Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

By: Brian King (Slovenia) - Board of Directors, Mozdev Community Organization
On: Saturday at 10:00

The large corporations that churn out the best selling consumer proprietary software get all the attention. Yet the real heroes are the FLOSS communities and individuals that provide the backbone for the industry, quietly enabling and securing the Internet and other areas of computing. The mantra of Open Source developers is "there is more than one way to do it", and choosing the right tools and technologies from the FLOSS patchwork can be daunting. The best software tools don't get in the way, but rather enable.
This talk will focus on the benefits of using FLOSS in your business, how it can fast-track you into a good position, and most importantly how if can help you innovate and turn your ideas into a success.
--------------------

+ Governing the Use of Open Source

By: Martin Michlmayr (USA) - Open Source Community Expert, Hewlett-Packard Company
On: Saturday at 10:30

Free and Open Source Software has become unavoidable. For very pragmatic and practical reasons, FLOSS provides incredible benefit to those who use it. However, if this software is not managed properly, it can lead to legal, technical, and/or organizational discomfort that can result in very negative impacts on the business. HP (Hewlett-Packard) recognized these realities long ago and has developed processes, tools, and expertise to both foster and govern the use of Open Source Software within the company. In January, HP launched two initiatives related to the governance of FLOSS, FOSSology and FOSSBazaar. FOSSology is an open source tool for license detection. FOSSBazaar is a workgroup of the Linux Foundation, with partners such as OpenLogic and the Olliance Group, to share and discuss best practices related to FLOSS governance.
This talk will describe our experiences and learning around FLOSS governance and some of the best practices and tools we've identified along the way.
--------------------

+ Dell and Open Source

By: Serban Zirnovan (Romania) - Enterprise Business Manager for Bulgaria and Romania, Dell
On: Saturday at 14:40

Several years ago, when the world was ruled by paper, data was EVERYWHERE … in file cabinets, in massive back offices … and only certain people were allowed to access it. Then, as things progressed, mainframes were used to bring all data into one place … to make it easier to manage and find. The problem was that mainframes were really expensive and inefficient. Only the elite could afford them. Today, we might think we have the best of both worlds … we’ve got all kinds of access to any type of data we want. Plus, we can share it whenever and however we see fit. However, data is once again … EVERYWHERE! We’ve gone back to where we started.
This data explosion is the primary catalyst for all storage problems today.
We’ll also discuss how virtualization allows you to tap into unused capacity hidden within the assets they already own. Virtualization also offers a way for you to reclaim IT resources that are currently being used to maintain inflexible and resource consuming infrastructures.
--------------------

+ Active State and Komodo - Why we chose to make our product open source

By: Shane Caraveo (Canada) - Head of Komodo development, ActiveState Software Inc.
On: Saturday at 15:00

ActiveState has a long history of being involved with and contributing to Open Source projects, especially around Dynamic Languages. We build value added commercial software and services on top of Open Source languages and components. Our most recent contribution, however, is a first of its kind for ActiveState. We took a proprietary product we developed over many years, Komodo Edit, and released it as Open Source software.
In the process we've learned a few things, had some successes, and some failures. In this talk I'll cover some of our strategies around commercial Open Source software and why we choose to open source Komodo. I'll also discuss the area's where we've had wonderful successes and what kind of problems we've encountered.

4. Special for you.

This conference was designed for you: business people, decisions makers, developers, students and the non-specialist computer users. The event represents a unique opportunity in Romania, not only to keep up with the latest news and trends in the field, but also to enlarge your horizon about new technologies and practices, to establish contacts, to socialize and network and have a great time in a fun and entertaining atmosphere.

As one of the IT pioneers Edsger Dijkstra said so well: "Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes." Participate at eLiberatica and you'll will find why!

Remember to note on your calendar - the discount promotion for eLiberatica tickets ends on 31st of March.

5. We found a great link to an article on the Open Source and Free Software phenomenon.

The article was published by Mircea Sarbu, one of the Romanian IT veterans. We are convinced it will heat up your curiosity to learn more:
"Open Source like a business" (the article is in Romanian).

We wish you all our best and hope to meet in the spring!
of the most important IT events in Romania gathered this year, in May, more than 200
participants in Brasov. Some of the most important representatives of the international
 Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS)
movement and of local and international IT companies were reunited by the initiative of
ROSI (Romanian Open Source and Free Software Initiative)
 and Agora Media.

The event had a great success among IT specialists but also among business people that
learned about a profitable alternative to develop their companies.

During the two days of presentations were covered most of the issues that
the international FLOSS movement has to deal with, trying to create a
stronger visibility on the community, the business environment and the local projects.
With its special spirit eLiberatica offered the proper meeting space for area specialists,
business people, professionals and computer fans in general, where guest could not only socialize,
 but also start fruitful partnerships.

The second edition of eLiberatica will be organized in
 Bucharest,
the most business achieve and economical developed city in Romania. The event
will take place in May 2008 (the exact date will be soon announced).

 The proposed location is
 "World Trade Center Bucharest",
the perfect place for presentations and networking for business people,
specialists, professors, students and computer fans in general.

Keeping the tradition, next year’s event will gather important personalities from the
Open Source and Free Software area, from national and multinational companies that use
these kinds of systems to grow their profitability. We will give our best to have
representatives from the Romanian Government as guests, next to IT representatives of foreign governments.

eLiberatica promises to be one of the biggest IT and business events in Romania for 2008.

Some of the discussion topics for eLiberatica 2008 are:

Free and open technologies in business: Open Source versus closed source POSS (Professional Open Source) model concept, business model types that use Open Source and Free Software;

Career development and professional growth by being a member of the international Open Source and Free Software community;

Legal aspects;

The importance of Open Source/Free Software in government, administration and public education;

Definition of the Open Source and Free Software trend: history, economical impact, etc.

We estimate that the registration section will be opened for the public in January 2008.

As the organization of the event goes on, new and useful information will be posted on
 www.eliberatica.ro/2008.

Therefore we invite you to visit us, to ask questions or to give suggestions, so that we can prepare together
an event that will at least raise up to the standards of eLiberatica 2007.

We will be here and we’re glad to communicate with you!

eLiberatica 2007 - bilingual and ePayment facilities

Starting this month, you can pay for your participation at the eLiberatica conference by debit or credit card, thanks to the electronic payment system setup by the ePayment company.

In addition, you can benefit from major discounts on your conference ticket(s) by registering and paying for your options before the end of February. Up until February 28th, you are able to take advantage of a 100 Euro discount for Basic Conference Tickets, paying only 149 instead of the standard 249 Euro price. At the same time students and teachers in the pre-university and university system can benefit from Discounted Conference Tickets ( 25 Euro ) by sending their application and proving appropriate documentation.

Soon, we are going to release our offer for mass-media partners. We are hoping to have complete information coverage for the public and this is a crucial step in that direction. With everybody’s help, we expect eLiberatica will be one of the most important events for the IT industry in Romania this year.

For details, please consult our events web page: http://www.eliberatica.ro/2007/eliberatica-registration or you can directly subscribe using the Agora Media official registration page http://www.agora.ro/eliberatica/.

Please contact the Agora Media Public Relations department if you need assistance through your registration process:

Telephone: (+4)-021-330.92.82
Fax: (+4)-021-330.92.8

Other News

Beside ePayment, another big accomplishment is the release of the English website version.

In the top right corner, you will find a small flag and a link, which provide you access to the Romanian and English versions, as needed.
A big effort was spent to implement bilingual services for the website, but the reward will be a powerful presence on the web promoting eLiberatica inside and outside Romania.

We, the eLiberatica organizers, are waiting your opinions and subscriptions to the conference, at www.eliberatica.ro.
