It’s been a hot minute since I’ve done a blog post. The reason? I switched website providers and the theme through the company hosting my site disappeared, rendering my website a dumpster fire, which included making it impossible to create blog posts. 

Thankfully, I managed to find a temporary work around until a permanent fix is made which I’m hoping will be soon. But let’s move on to more exciting news and the reason for this blog post.

When I started writing the first book many years ago, I didn’t plan to make it a series. The original book was one that floated around in my brain and my computer collecting dust for years while waiting to be told and I really wanted to share it with the world. But as I was rewriting it, I fell in love with the secondary characters in the story (and so did my beta readers) and poof, one book turned into three. 

I deliberated whether or not to include suspense elements because it’s my favorite genre to write, but I decided against it since I didn’t think it fit the theme of the series that was focused on spiritual journeys (not religious) and healing with characters who possess special gifts.

This choice proved to be challenging since it veered from my usual genre, so I struggled with where to place it. After doing a deeper dive into the book’s subgenres and looking at various books on Amazon, I settled into psychic romance which seems the best choice given the elements of all the books.

The Trouble with Healers (Book Three) – Coming Out September 22, 2026

Each book can be read as a standalone or in order. 

What I love most about this series, other than the characters of course, is that book three is set in the Cayman Islands and includes characters from the Deadly Series. It also gave me ideas for a spin off series with characters who possess amazing gifts they use for good and evil. The best part? I go back to writing suspense. The new books in the series are set in various locations, including Tampa, Florida where I currently live. All the new settings is the perfect excuse to visit and research new places. 

I’ve got eleven story ideas so far and I look forward to starting the first one at the beginning of next year. For those of you who prefer my romantic suspense books, you’re going to love these. They’ll also have the paranormal twist some of my books are known for. 

Hopefully this is the first of many blog posts on my ‘soon to come’ new website that won’t be a dumpster fire held together with paperclips.

In 2024, I read SO many more books than I thought possible.

While I loved reading all those new books and getting to know new authors, their characters and stories, the truth was I was avoiding my book. The one my editors sent months ago, because honestly I wasn’t happy with the story and the character’s journey and put my head in the sand to avoid fixing it. 

But I’m happy to say I’ve pulled my head out of the sand and ready to jump in and start editing. After all, what I sent my editors was the first draft and first drafts were meant to be edited. And edited. And edited again. Lol! 

The original story was just one book, but as I was writing it, I fell in love with the side characters and decided to give them their own stories. What surprised me was the change to the characters, specifically their “gifts”. Before the fantasy readers get too excited, it’s not that kind of gift. Lol! Their gifts are more subtle and fit with the characters, their personalities and their stories. The first book is part of a 3 part book series and I’m excited to share it with you. 

I started editing this week. Eeekkk! 

While I’m excited because I came up with ideas to make the book, characters and their stories better, I’m also terrified of the feedback from my editors. But honestly that’s nothing new. Lol!

5 LONG years have passed! I feel like the meme going around with the lady from the Titanic movie about how much time has passed. While it hasn’t been that long, it has been a minute since I published a book. My latest book, The Renovation, was released on December 15. 

I debated whether to write a blog post, because I’ve been sharing more of my journey on my social media pages, and on my YouTube channel. But, after the pains I went through to add the book to my website, I realized that I’d been neglecting my website, and the readers of my blog, so here I am.

The neglect was not intentional, but more out of embarrassment the more time passed when I had no exciting or interesting news to share. Who wants to read about my car breaking down again, or why I was still editing the same book that was supposed to be published in 2019? I certainly didn’t.

While crappy things happened over the past five years, some amazing stuff happened too:

PERSONAL 

My parents came for a visit in early 2023. It was the first time since the pandemic that I’d seen them so their three-week visit was very welcomed! 

We moved to Tampa in June and purchased a beautiful townhome in a small quiet community with alligators (only baby ones so far), but that’s nothing new because it’s Florida. Lol!  

I started a new job with MKA International, a construction consulting company. It’s a tight knit group because of the size of the company, which I love. It’s also close to work and there’s no overtime which is a bonus. 

My son is out of school now and spent his first summer as a free man in a 2-month culinary internship in Michigan, fell in love with the place and is making plans to return. Hopefully it’s a very long term plan because I’d miss him! 

My daughter started middle school and is making new friends and loving it. She’s entered that ‘don’t take a picture of me’ phase if you follow me on social media and wonder why there’s less and less photos of her posted there. Lol!

I purchased a new car (2023 Nissan Rogue) with all the bells and whistles and my old car in the shop being repaired in preparation to be handed down to my son. 

We are loving Tampa and looking forward to building a life here whether that’s for a short while or years to come. 

BOOKS

Thankfully I never stopped writing during those five years so the next books won’t take as long to write and publish as this last one. My goal is to publish 3 fiction books in 2024 and 1 nonfiction book. 

I’m branching into a new genre with my next series (contemporary romance with a spiritual undertone) and hope readers will enjoy the books as much as my romantic suspense books. But not to worry, I’m not straying far from suspense because I enjoy writing them too much. 

Thanks for sticking with me for the past 5 years waiting for the new book. It’s only available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited at the moment, but I’m working on the printed book.

The main characters are from my first book For the Love of Jazz, and yes, characters from that book make appearances that are comical as well as serious, but the book is suspenseful.

This meant a lot more research than I realized. In addition, I wanted to write all three books, or at least the first draft of each. The reason is because of the challenges I faced while writing my first book series.

My goal is to publish two books this year and I’m determined to reach this goal, so I shifted my attention to another book I’d written. One that is completed, and only needs editing. That book is The Renovation (working title). The story idea came from my editor who liked the character Danny from my first book FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ, where the main character tries to set him up with her love interests’ ex-fiancé. The setup didn’t happen in the book but was a good place to start with writing their love story. I wasn’t sure they’d be a good fit at first since they’re very different characters. But, after spending time with their backstories, they revealed why they fit despite being from different worlds.

I don’t have a release date, but I’m thinking it’ll be toward the middle or end of the year. Here are some steps I took and will take to make it happen:

READ THROUGH

I took February to read through the first draft of the book. Although the book was finished, I wasn’t sure what state the first draft was in and how much work would be needed. I was pleasantly surprised to find only a few chapters in the middle needed real work. While reading through the draft, I identified various issues I needed to address and made a list I’ll use when I start doing my 4 phase self-editing.

BOOK MAP

I like to use a book map to plan how I write a book from start to edited first draft. The map helps me to make sure any deadline dates I choose are feasible and provide specific date for my beta readers and editors and also helps with the next phases: editing and launching the book. This required me to dust off my launch checklists since the book marketing world is forever changing. Not to mention the numerous steps involved.

4 PHASE EDIT

The next stage for me is to use my 4 phase checklist to self-edit the book. After my self-edit, the book will go to my beta readers, and then two professional editors.  You can follow me on YouTube to find out the behind the scenes of how and why I use a 4 phase edit. During the month of December, two of my books had birthdays.

For the Love of Jazz

My first and only traditionally published book that’s settled into a home with Simon and Schuster. The story started out completely different from where it ended, and created my desire to write romantic suspense, a genre I’d read but never had the urge to write. I pitched this book to a couple of different publishers and was pleasantly surprised when it was accepted and published in December 2012. My life was changed forever and started the crazy journey that is my writing life.

Jazz music was always playing in the background while I wrote this book. I loved writing the jazz club scenes, and the interactions between the hero/heroine, especially when the ghosts influenced them. If you enjoy interracial romances with a touch of paranormal (no vampires or werewolves) and a good mystery, you’ll like this read. BUY A COPY 

Deadly Race 

I thoroughly loved writing the main character of this book. She was sassy, confidence to the point of almost being arrogant, and was fearless about going after what she wanted which was to be a professional race car driver. It’s book two in series that is set on Grand Cayman, the island I was born and lived most of my adult life on. The heroine was delightful, especially the brazen way she pursued her reluctant love interest, and the interactions with her intrusive but hilarious family. The best part was describing the locations I grew up around and using the family names in my community.

If you like interracial romances (notice a pattern, lol) and strong female leads, you’ll enjoy this story. BUY A COPY 

In the last blog, I shared why I haven’t published a book in three years and how that affected my writing journey. I’m changing that in 2022, and as an incentive, I’ve dropped the prices of two of my books to .99 cents.

Book 1 – DEADLY BLOODLINES

The first book in the Deadly Series, I dropped the price to encourage readers to try the first book in the series and also motivate me to finish the fourth book. I decided to put the final book on hold to write my current book series. The topic of book four is one I’m passionate about and really want to write it and finish out the series.

Book 2 – PERSUADING LOLA

This book was a labor of love, and about the ghosts in my first book, For the Love of Jazz. Readers loved their interference and wanted to learn more about them. They were supposed to be the original characters of the book but ended up being ghosts instead. A story about an interracial couple (of course) in the 50s who fall in love. Returning to the characters and submersing myself in their back stories, the music and atmosphere of the jazz club, was a wonderful experience.

As 2021 ends, I’m excited for what’s on the horizon for the new year, from the books I plan to publish, and other big goals I want to achieve. I recently shared these words of encouragement with my readers and my FB writing group, and of course with myself.

Don’t give up

The past couple years have been a challenge, and life might not have worked out the way you hoped but remember that each day is the opportunity to change things. Things can never remain the same. They must move forward and change must happen so don’t give up!

Make staying in the moment a daily practice

It’s so easy to think about the failures of the past or focus on where you should be, that you forget to stay in the present moment. Being out of the moment usually creates anxiety about what you should’ve done or should do instead of embracing where you are now and recognizing that everything can be a lesson you’re learning and thinking about how it’ll make you a better person or improve your life in the long run.

Follow YOUR dreams

Are you living the life you want? If you’re feeling stuck, unhappy, or unfulfilled, it might be because you aren’t living a dream that’s buried deep inside you. Take time during the holidays to remember the life you’ve dreamed of living and what small step(s) you can take toward it in the new year.

Embrace joy

You can’t find the answer if you’re focused on the problem. All you’ll see is more problems. I love this saying! The same is true of joy. If all you’re focused on is what’s going wrong in your life, you’ll struggle to see what’s going right or the changes needed to make it better. There is so much wonder and beauty around you, but you’ll miss it if you’re not looking for it.

As you head into 2022, I hope you’ll reach for the stars and remember that you’re awesome! Thank you for being with me on this journey. Much love!

1. I was saving to buy a home and since I self published, the money came out of my own pocket.
2. Unexpected expenses with my apartment, car, and kids hit me hard.
3. My father lost access to his social security funds and I was covering his expenses while trying to sort things out for him.
4. COVID hit and everything went out the window for me.

I could list a bunch of other reasons and excuses, but it really boiled down to fear, and that fear paralyzed me in almost every area of my life, but especially in my writing and coaching. While I did have a few clients during that time, I didn’t take advantage of the numerous opportunities that presented themselves and my writing life showed it.

Fear also kept me from moving forward with finishing various books I’d started, pitching publishers like I’d planned, and even kept me from promoting my books.

The journey to walk through that fear wasn’t easy, and I’m hardly in the place where I can call myself fearless, but I did find methods to help me deal with my fear in new ways, since the old ways stopped working. In the last couple of months, the clouds of fear has lifted and the light of consistent confidence and the excitement of what lay ahead has kept me company. Best of all I had the courage to take action.

That action includes working on two books during National Novel Writing Month, promoting my books, launching new writing products, and creating a kickass plan for 2022.

I don’t have all the answers or know exactly how everything will work out (even with my plan), but I’m open to opportunities, and the limitless possibilities that are waiting around the corner. More importantly, I’m moving forward instead of remaining frozen.

When I decided to pluck it from the mountain of old story ideas and work on it, I had no idea what portal of hell I would open up. Lol! I say that because while I still loved the story and knew I had a lot of editing to make it work, I was WAY off.

I dove into the scenes and the characters. I made changes to the story and everything started to unravel and get worse.  I was pulling my hair out trying to make it work. I don’t remember exactly when it happened, but I had an ah ha moment. Why not break the book into two different stories? The main characters had evolved SO much that they didn’t fit the original characters I started with or the story. Perfect! Problem solved, right?

Not quite. I also had a subplot romance happening that evolved deeper than I anticipated and their story didn’t fit easily into the new book idea or the original. Hence, another book. So now I have three books that are part of a series instead of one stand alone book.

While I’m certain my other books waiting to be written aren’t thrilled about being delayed, I’m happy with the results.

The working title is The Space Between Us. I have book cover ideas, but nothing I’m ready to share just yet. What I can share with you, however is the book description. Let me know in the comments what you think.

THE SPACE BETWEEN US – Book One 

When Rachel Miller meets the new owner of the accounting firm she works for, she’s shocked to discover he’s the man from her dreams. Their attraction is combustible in and out of her dreams, but he doesn’t appear to recognize her, leaving Rachel to wonder if their deep connection is just her imagination.

Michael’s sudden departure thrusts her into a spiritual journey that forces her to face the problems in her life and shines a light on what she really wants for her life and not what others think she should want.

Michael Doherty’s only plan when he arrived in Cayman was to finish the merger and return home. Meeting a woman who stirs his heart and soul wasn’t on the agenda. Never one to pass on opportunities, he offers her a relationship and life with him in Ireland. Rachel’s refusal rocks him and he’s shoved into his own spiritual journey when he returns home.

Fate brings them back together and they’re ready to take a chance on love. But, the journey to happiness isn’t a smooth one with family and colleagues determined to keep them apart.

You might notice that this story is not a romantic suspense, which is the genre I usually write. For the moment, the story is a contemporary romance with spiritual undertones. I love writing romantic suspense and will continue to write in that genre, but I have ideas for other genres I want to explore and write. I’m excited to finally expand into those genres, including nonfiction, which lines up with my coaching.

Okay, now to answer the next question. What is the release date? None at the moment for various reasons, but the main one being the book isn’t finished, and there’s still a lot of work needed. The current word count is 92k, and the plan is to finish it during National Novel Writing Month in November 2021. I share more details about it in a YouTube video.

After NaNoWriMo, the plan is to start on the other two books and finish them during Camp Nano in April and July of 2022. I’m excited to write this series and move on to other stories waiting to be written.

I realize it’s been a while since my last book release, and I’ll share more about that in my next blog post.

The story idea for Persuading Lola was born because readers wanted to hear the story of the ghosts from my first book For The Love of Jazz.

Writing the characters was fun! I fell in love with them while writing the first book, especially because they were the reason behind the original story idea.

No you aren’t imaging it. I really am publishing another book this close to Persuading Lola. I’m making up for making you wait for three years.

The story idea for Deadly Family started with a dream and my passion for the injustices of trafficking of kids. The sentencing in the Cayman Islands (where I’m from) against people who commit these crimes is atrocious-times as short as four years.

This book is an expression of my anger and disgust for the laws protecting everyone involved in human trafficking except the people trafficked.

The death scenes are violent, graphic, and emotional compared to the other books in the deadly series so if you’ve got a weak stomach this book might not be for you.

The book tells the story of a broken woman with a horrifying past who finds the courage to face the people who ruined her life, save others from the same fate, and risks her heart for a chance at love.
