From coast to coast, lesbian events in the United States fill festivals and party weekends with activities made for and by women. Provincetown, Palm Springs and Key West have long been destinations for female gatherings, some dating back decades. The Michigan Womyn's Music Festival held its final show in 2015 but for 40 years built a temporary festival city run by and for lesbian feminists each August. More recently, Miami has become a hot spot for beachy lesbian parties. So, what happens when hundreds to thousands of women come together? Why don't we find out.

In 1980, there were some 200 lesbian bars in the U.S.: Bonnie & Clyde, Ariel, Meow Mix, The Palms, the list goes on. Flash forward 40 years, and the survivors can be counted on three hands. To be fair, these unique community spaces for women were already in decline, a product of gentrification and more time spent online, but the 2020 pandemic brought challenges for all small businesses struggling to stay afloat. Check out the Lesbian Bar Project, a fundraising campaign that wants to make sure these remaining lesbian bars will not vanish into lost space. Oh, and, make sure to drop in your local as soon as you can.

While it's true that quite a few lesbian nightlife institutions have shuttered in last decade - i.e. The Palms in West Hollywood, The Lex in San Francisco, Phase 1 in DC, Rubyfruit Jungle in New Orleans - it's fair to say that there are also quite a few that continue to hold their ground on the lesbian bar scene, both in dedicated or at least lesbian-popular brick and mortar spaces (listed here) or through weekly and monthly parties held at ladies night venues across cities (listed elsewhere). Even in compiling this list, we thought about breaking it down by region so as not to overwhelm you, dear reader, but here they are in all their glory. Long live the lesbian bar!

The Irish capital is a charming and cultural city that traces its history back to early Viking settlements at the mouth of the River Liffey.Although homosexuality was not legalized until 1993, gay bars and saunas have stood proudly in Dublin for decades, drag queens have performed on television since the 1950s, and notable LGBT figures like playwright Oscar Wilde have called it home. In 2015, Ireland became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote, signing it into law at Dublin Castle.Modern Dublin has an integrated and diverse scene with a little something for everyone whether a pint at Ireland's oldest and most famous gay club The George, drag at Pantibar, a girl's night out the monthly Spinster party or mingling with the Dublin Bears at one of their pub events. It also hosts numerous LGBTQ festivals including Pride Week, the Dublin Gay Theatre Festival and the Gaze International LGBT Film Festival.

Once a dreary post-WWII industrial town along the Rhine, the cathedral city today is a vibrant center of subculture - strong on art and design, rich in gay life and one of the more important capitals of cultural production in Europe. It has established a balance between modesty in its outward appearance and an exuberance tucked into its folds. Though the queer scene is not as pervasive here as it is in Berlin, visitors may head to Schaafenstraße, also known as the Bermuda Triangle, and get lost for hours among the LGBTQ clubs and bars. True believers claim Cologne as the gay capital of Germany and often tout the popular statistic that one in 10 of its inhabitants is gay. With so much attention focused on the gargoyle-spangled behemoth at its center, the city has grown slowly and strangely behind the scenes with little post-war exploitation from outsiders. An exhaustive selection of household boutiques, vintage shops, furniture stores and small fashion labels force themselves up like adamant flowers out of the post-war bricolage that characterizes the rest of the city's architecture. The relationship between the touristy city center and the rest of the town can be incoherent, but if the traveler can brave the uncanny long enough to have a Kölsch somewhere outside the inner city, Cologne's hidden charm will come through.

In the early 1980s, camping was in its infancy. Now around 150 properties thrive in the US, some requiring memberships, often a nominal fee. Gay Camping USA offers a "Friends with Privileges" discount membership program for affiliated camps. In northern climes, campgrounds are seasonal, but it's year-round fun and adventure travel in the south and west. Most offer a spread of accommodations from basic tenting to RV hookups to rustic cabins and even lodges, but each is a unique experience.
Gay city guide for Sydney

Sydney - often called The Emerald City - is Australia's oldest, largest and most ethnically diverse city, first settled by convicts from England in 1788 and famous for its iconic opera house, harbor and harbor bridge. The state capital of New South Wales, it is centered in six neighborhoods near the harbor, but the greater Sydney metropolitan area spreads over 4,775 square miles (12,367 km), including nearly 700 suburbs and extending all the way to the Blue Mountains to the west. Despite its distance from Europe and North America, it is one of the 15 most visited cities in the world - Chinese and Americans making up over 30 per cent of international visitors - and hosted the 2000 Summer Olympics that the International Olympic Committee president called the "best Olympic Games ever." Famous Sydneysiders include actor Hugh Jackman, model and businesswoman Elle Macpherson and Olympic swimmer Dawn Fraser.A global business center, Sydney also offers visitors museums, beaches, restaurants, nightlife, architecture and natural beauty. Tops on most tourists bucket list are the Opera House (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Harbour Bridge, the Royal Botanical Garden, Bondi Beach, the Blue Mountains and a ferry ride in the harbor. The big LGBT event each year is the Lesbian and Gay Mardi Gras, which started modestly in 1978 and now is ranked as one of the world's top costumed parades with nearly 200 floats and attracts 12,000 participants, not counting the hundreds of thousands on the sidelines. Gay Pride is celebrated each June with a full calendar of special events and parties. The Golden Mile or Oxford Street Darlinghurst remains the heart of gay Sydney, although the rainbow ribbon runs from Potts Point around the Central Business District and extends into suburbia, which is particularly popular among lesbians.

Gay city guide for Jerusalem

Jerusalem, whose tumultuous history goes back 5,000 years, sits on a plateau midway between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea. A major pilgrimage site for Christians, Jews and Muslims, it is claimed as capital by both Israel and Palestine. West Jerusalem is Jewish; East Jerusalem is Muslim. The Old City, the ancient walled section filled with holy sites and bazaars, covers less than a square mile (about 1 km) and was the entire city until the late 19th century. The American writer Mark Twain wrote in 1867, "A fast walker could go outside the walls of Jerusalem and walk entirely around the city in an hour. I do not know how else to make one understand how small it is." Divided into four sections - Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim - since medieval times, it was designated a World Heritage Site in 1982.Today, modern Jerusalem covers 48 square miles (124 km). It is a bustling city with concerts, art films, theater, an artist colony, cultural festivals and a diverse nightlife, including a few LGBTQ spots. Restaurants range from street food in the Old City to fine dining and celebrity chefs. The climate is warm and dry in the summer, cool and rainy in winter with occasional snow. Tourists/pilgrims come year around, peaking in the summer and around religious holidays. Over 3.5 million visitor come to the city annually despite sporadic violence.Caution: While Tel Aviv ranks high in LGBTQ acceptance, Jerusalem is less liberal. Be discrete, dress modestly, avoid hand-holding and other PDA, particularly in the more orthodox sections of the city. The small Pride parade held since 2002 encountered violence in 2002 and 2015. All tourists, regardless of sexual orientation, are advised to check on travel warnings and stay on the alert.

Gay city guide for Chicago

Chicago has a deep history of LGBT community resilience and power. Rooted in a history of covert, provocative and self-created arts and entertainment spaces as a means of pleasure and survival, some of which still exist today, LGBT Chicagoans used to wear pieces of scarlet-colored clothing to slyly signify their affiliation with each other in bars and nightclubs. Today, Chicago holds its own through its work in developing the first city-designated LGBT neighborhood in the country, dozens of LGBT-centered bars, bookstores and community centers, a city-sponsored Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, Leather museum, and one of the largest-attended annual Pride fests in the country. While Chicago has the city-designated LGBT neighborhood of Boystown in Lakeview to boast, it is also known for its L-centric (and more LBT-friendly) Andersonville neighborhood, which includes the famous Women and Children First feminist bookstore. There's also a growing LGBTQ community in the Rogers Park neighborhood, specifically along the Glenwood Avenue strip near the Morse red line station where you'll find a handful of lively, gay-owned bars adjacent from some gorgeous community murals. Unfortunately many lesbian-owned and operated bars have shut their doors in the past few years, so many LGBTQ communities are more mobile nowadays, offering queer nights or ladies nights at various gay-owned and/or friendly establishments in the city on designated nights.Chicago's historic LGBT community didn't make national headlines with direct action against police repression and homophobia in the public sphere like New York City and San Francisco did, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen! Chicago was the first city in the nation to create a gay-designated neighborhood (Boystown), and Illinois made history by being the first state to repeal its sodomy laws in 1961.

Johannesburg was born in 1886 as a gold rush town and still retains the hubbub of a new frontier with multiple "downtowns" in addition to the historic central business district. It is the country's largest city and center for finance, transportation, commerce, industry and mining. Nicknamed Joburg and Jozi, it sits on the Highveld (plateau) in a pleasant subtropical highland climate and spills over 635 square miles (c. 1000 sq km) with more than 500 suburbs. One of them, Soweto in the southwest, houses more than half the city's population. Posh neighborhoods like Sandhurst, Northcliff and Houghton have developed to the north and northwest, extending the urban region to Pretoria, the seat of the executive branch of government. This is a town more for businesspeople than tourists, but it's well worth a stop to see some of the earliest traces of man and to re-visit recent history in Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. Its O.R. Tambo International Airport is one of the few in the world with non-stop flights to all habited regions of the world, making it a good crossroads for travelers.

Gay city guide for Montreal

On an island in the St. Lawrence River, Montreal is a rich center of culture and a cosmopolitan city of design steeped in European heritage. Today, it considered one of the world's most gay-positive cities. The French colonists arrived in 1642, led by Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve, who founded Ville-Marie, today's Old Montreal. According to the Quebec Gay Archives, there was even a gay military drummer among the first settlers convicted of committing "crimes of the worst kind," whose life was spared upon agreeing to become the colony's first executioner. Some of the earliest buildings remain including the Sulpician Seminary next to the Notre Dame Basilica and Chateau Ramezay, but the French influence can still be found throughout modern Montreal's distinct culture, mixed with the influences of subsequent arrivals from Ireland, Italy, Haiti, Greece, Lebanon and China, to name just a few. The variety of cultures is perhaps most apparent in the city's wide culinary offer, but also reflected in the overwhelmingly welcoming spirit on the island.Gay and lesbian culture also got an early start although clandestine at first. Gay men cruised Old Montréal's military Champs de Mars, today the area behind Montréal City Hall. The first known LGBTQ-themed magazine in North America, Les Mouches Fantastiques, was published in 1918, and an established gay scene began to flourish in the 1950s, subject to raids up until 1990 when the police raided the Sex Garage loft party, regarded as Montreal's Stonewall, sparking the LGBT movement. Not long after, the Black and Blue festival was born, with activism and pride paving the way for legal victories like same-sex marriage and the emergence of the Gay Village in Saint Catherine Street East, filled with magical pink lanterns and gay businesses. The Marche de Fierté gay pride in August is only one of over a hundred festivals including the world renown International Jazz Festival and Just for Laughs comedy festival.

Gay city guide for Bern

German-speaking Bern on the western side of the country is an exquisitely preserved historic old town that has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. Its heraldic symbol is the bear. Should anyone forget it, live bears have been displayed in town since the 16th century, early on in a pit and now in an elaborate open-air bear park. Begun in the 12th century on a hilly peninsula created by a loop in the River Aare, the city spread into the surrounding plain. The nation's "federal city" and seat of Parliament, it is within easy striking distance of idyllic lakes and the Bernese Alps that have peaks of more than 12,000 ft (3,660 m), Emmenthal, the region producing the most popular Swiss cheese, is less than an hour away. The quaint streets of old town discourage modern conveyances like the automobile. The compact neighborhood can best seen on foot although Segway and rickshaw tours are available. Among the sights are the elaborate medieval clock tower with moving puppets and a town hall and Gothic cathedral, both dating from the 15th century. Bern also has Europe's longest covered shopping promenade - four miles (6 km) of medieval arcades locals call "Lauben" that protect against all manner of weather. Behind many historic facades, are inviting bars, boutiques and cabarets. More contemporary attractions are the world's largest collection of Paul Klee works in a cultural center designed by Renzo Piano and the Einstein House where the famous physicist lived briefly in the early 20th century while working in the patent office and pondering relativity.Bern lacks Zurich's glitzy LGBTQ nightlife, but it has an active LGBTQ community; Gaywest, an all-day queer street party and after parties in September; Queersicht, an annual LGBT film festival in early November; Pink Cross, a national umbrella association for gay and lesbian organizations in Switzerland; the HAB services and advocacy club and Pink Mama Theater, a queer/punk pan-European theater and dance company.

The capital of Bavaria, Munich is a prim showcase of high style and old-European charm balanced with a technological edge and economic prosperity that make this southeastern German city one of the world's most livable.Known for its beautiful architecture, proud cultural heritage, soccer team, modern infrastructure, beer, industry and academic culture, this once medieval city sits on the River Isar about 50 miles (80 km) north of the Bavarian Alps. At its historic center is the Altstadt, the old city, replete with gothic churches, former royal residences, a stunning opera house and the iconic Hofbräuhaus am Platzl beer hall, a prime attraction during one of Germany's biggest Oktoberfest celebrations. And, beyond the old fortress walls, the city is exceedingly navigable with plenty to explore. A ritzy university and arts district is home to world-class schools and museums, a legacy of 19th century kings who established Munich as a center of arts and sciences. To the northeast of the city center is the English Garden, larger than New York City's Central Park and a stunning urban green area. Although increasingly trendy, to the southeast is Glockenbachviertel (GBV), the traditionally gay neighborhood with Gärtnerplatz square at its center, surrounded by boutiques, cafés and bars. Look to Müllerstrasse for a good selection of LGBTQ nightlife. This open-minded city, which has had its own Rosa Liste gay rights party since 1996, also delivers well on big gay holidays including massive Christopher Street Day Pride in July, a gay and fetish meeting during Stark-Bier-Fest, the Pink Christmas market and gay Sunday at Oktoberfest, among others.

Gay city guide for Barcelona

Barcelona is the poster child for how hosting the Olympics can transform a decaying city. Founded by the Romans, it was ruled by the Visigoths before it became part of the Caliphate of Cordoba and still later the capital of the kingdom of Catalonia and Aragón, whose royal galleons ruled the Mediterranean. Some of that history still lives in the Gothic Quarter. A world exposition in 1929 fired a renaissance of sorts; industrial development after WWII pumped up the economy. But as the 20th century neared its end, Barcelona was a dangerous city for the tourists. Then came the 1992 Summer Olympics.Today Barcelona is the #4 European destination behind London, Paris and Istanbul, Europe's #1 cruise ship port based on the number of passengers who land there and a major international convention center. Its beaches, once an industrial wasteland, are among the most alluring in the world. It offers a bounty of restaurants, nightlife and shopping. The gay scene has blossomed as well with the city offering hotels for gay travelers, weekly dance parties, a no-holds-bar cruising scene, 24-hour gay saunas, gay beaches and international circuit parties. Its 10-day gay pride festival each June attracts over 150,000 and is one of the most important in Europe. One neighborhood - Eixample - has become such a center of gay activity that's it's been dubbed "Gaixample."

No other city in France - or the world - matches up to Paris as a global destination, rich in history, culture, culinary delights, shopping, architecture, fashion, sensory pleasures. And few cities are as welcoming to LGBTQ travelers. More than a dozen years ago the city began actively courting gay tourists. "We want to create a gay friendly spirit across the whole city," a spokesman for the project announced on the steps of City Hall. Gays have become a force in the revitalization of the Marais, a historic neighborhood along the Seine, but throughout the city there's the freedom of expression with gays able to display affection in public and check into hotels.Paris has a number of Gay Pride activities and organizations. The Paris Gay Pride Parade (Marche des Fiertés) attracts hundred of thousands of people each June, slowly winding from the Left Bank to the Place de la République for dancing, DJs and live music with celebrations in bars, restaurants and clubs along the way. It is the largest Gay Pride celebration in the country. France remains among the most open-minded European countries when it comes to LGBTQ rights with same-sex marriages accounting for 14.25% of marriages in Paris as of 2014.Paris has long been famous on the LGBTQ scene. Oscar Wilde died and was buried here. Colette and Proust wrote novels here. Sylvia Beach opened a bookstore. Alice B. Tolklas baked brownies. Dior, St. Laurent, Gaultier, Balmain designed dresses. It continues to be a gay mecca because no other city offers what it does and because France is at the forefront of recognizing LGBTQ rights. In 1985, France passed a law barring sexual discrimination in jobs and housing, amending it in 2004 to make homophobic slurs illegal. In 2013 it became the 13th country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage with the right to adopt children. When Paris became the first European city to elect an openly gay mayor in 2001, his sexual orientation never came up in the campaign. The openly gay can serve in the armed forces.

No place else on earth combines so many marvelous qualities quite like Rio de Janeiro, an exciting city with friendly, fun-loving people and breathtaking surroundings. From a pedestal atop the peak of the Corcovado Mountain, Christ the Redeemer overlooks the city, welcoming all with open arms to this chaotic and seductive destination. The Tijuca Forest, said to be the largest urban forest in the world, at his feet provides a stunning backdrop along Guanabara Bay, including monolithic granite and quartz mountains that rise up directly from the sea.In addition to natural beauty, the city packs in theater, world-class shopping, 19th century architecture, modern skyscrapers, a ritzy lagoon neighborhood, football stadiums and soft white sand beaches, to name a few. Even the favelas (slums) in Rio have their charms and have become touristic attractions in their own right. And no introduction to Rio is complete without mention of the infectious celebratory vibe that permeates a city that is home to the biggest party in the world. Carnival welcomes all revelers during this week-long festival, which includes a host of gay parties all over town. New Year's Eve is another big draw with an estimated two million people in Copacabana alone, also known for its Gay Pride celebration.

Gay city guide for Berlin

Though the trains are still on time and a general feeling of orderliness attends even its wildest parties, Berlin has wrested a highly evolved culture of excess and sexual freedom from the last, terrible century. The metropolis has long been hospitable to non-conforming expressions of sexuality, and it has been argued that Berlin is the birthplace of "gay identity" and sexuality-activism.All the trappings of Weimar decadence, sexual recreation, and the day-to-night-to-day party scene have survived as the city's trademarks. Unfortunately, both outsiders and insiders are not loath to turn profit off those very trappings, and at its worst Berlin trades in a cosmopolitan exuberance that can be striking in its dissonance with past cultural conflict. Since 1945 Berlin has been destroyed, divided, and then again reunited, lending itself easily to myths of reinvention. It is a city that, despite a palpable exhaustion, is always said to be finding its second wind, and then its third, and then its fourth. But despite or because of its perpetual discontent, Berlin continues to be the destination for the creatives and the queers, for the techno-apostles and the Marx-thumpers. Few cities invite you, like this one does, to stake out a wild identity, make what you want to make, and party as long as you are physically capable. Everything in Berlin, from your coffee to your dance club to your sex life is full of potential and community-building. And yet, the city remains remarkably permeable. Even the foreign traveler (at least the one who is in the know and stands in line wearing the right shoes), can take part in its endless rising from the ashes.

Gay city guide for Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703, is a seductive city with a rich imperial history cultivated over its two centuries as the seat of the Russian royals. The grandeur remains, well preserved in building upon building of Baroque and neoclassical architecture and displayed in hundreds of museums, libraries and theaters. The Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, established in 1738 during the reign of Empress Anna, is one of the most renowned in the world, responsible for producing greats like Anna Pavlova, Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Also known as the Venice of the north, the city is a major port on the Baltic Sea divided by a network of rivers and canals and made up of 44 islands, crisscrossed by hundred of bridges. Nevsky Prospekt, the main avenue, starts at the Admiralty and runs east to the Moscow Railway Station and on to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, passing much the city's shopping, entertainment, nightlife and many of its monuments.Russia may not be the first place that springs to mind for a carefree gay holiday, but the more liberal Saint Petersburg does have a small albeit more discreet gay scene, with several well established clubs, bars and even a sauna or two. Entrances are often unmarked and door policies discerning, but inside the party goes until dawn. A politically active community exists, although it is also smaller and less visible than other places in Europe. Public displays of affection between same-sex couples are best avoided.

In the 1950s Acapulco set the standard for glitz in international beach resorts, the exclusive hideaway of movie stars and millionaires, and may have been where discos began. It was Mexico's premier beach resort where Elizabeth Taylor wed Mike Todd, JFK and Jackie honeymooned and Elvis filmed a beach movie. It has been the playground - often shamelessly hedonistic - for celebrities from Gary Cooper to Sinatra to Sting. But the Queen of Mexican beach resorts lost her some of her luster, overshadowed by Cancun and Puerto Vallarta and dealing with crime statistics. The oldest and largest of Mexican beach resort towns may be making a comeback, however, with a restoration push from a group of Mexican businessmen headed by billionaire Carlos Slim.Even with the competition, Acapulco has remained a popular destination for Mexican and international tourists and gay travelers. Europeans favor it because it is has a little grit of reality. It has an informal and vibrant gay scene, but don't expect any big Pride parades or rainbow flags flying.Although it does not have the LGBT-Q tourist infrastructure of Puerto Vallarta or Cancun, visitors can find several gay entertainment options and many gay-friendly nightclubs and bars along the strip known as the "Costera."

"Gayborhood" is a relatively new term, probably born in a newspaper headline in Philadelphia in the 1990s, but gay villages - enclaves where LGBTQ could feel at home - have long existed, particularly in bohemian sections of large urban centers. Berlin's Schöneberg became perhaps the world's first gay village by the 1920s. With new anti-discrimination laws, established LGBTQ communities have multiplied in many cities, and even small towns have gayborhoods. No longer ghettos, they are often vanguards of gentrification and centers of nightlife, shopping and culture.

Bogota on a high plateau in the Andes is Colombia's capital and at 8,529 feet (2,625 m) the world's fourth loftiest capital after Bolivia, Ecuador and Bhutan. A bustling metropolis mixing colonial and modern, it offers visitors museums, restaurants, shopping malls, nightlife and a good base for day trips. Bring a sweater. The average temperate is 58 °F (14.5 °C) with the coolest nights in January and March the warmest month. Most mornings begin with fog followed by few totally sunny days. In April, May and September through October - the rainiest months - skies are overcast.Bogota's airport, one of the most modern in Latin American, is a popular transit center; but the recent peace treaty ending more than a half century of guerrilla conflict is likely to encourage more than layovers. Tourists in the capital need to remain alert to possible robbery, mugging and pickpocketing, but security has improved significantly in recent years.Bogota has a number of distinctive neighborhoods with the most affluent in the north. Touted as the hot, new LGBTQ destination, the Chapinero gayborhood is a flourishing hub of LGBTQ culture and entertainment and location of the country's only LGBTQ community center. One of Latin America's most foreword-thinking countries in LGBTQ legislation, Colombia decriminalized homosexual activity in 1980. The annual June Pride Parade in Bogota, begun in 1982 with a handful of celebrants, attracts as many as 2,000 marchers. Homophobia still surfaces, but public displays of affection between same sex couples are not uncommon.
