Josh Hutcherson as Nod in the Movie “Epic”

I first saw the trailer of “Epic” when we watched “Iron Man 3” a few weeks ago. I was mesmerized by the trailer! The story probably is similar in concept with “Thumbelina” but I’m pretty sure it has it’s own unique plot.

Today I found out that Josh Hutcherson will voice the character of Nod – one of the lead characters. Now that gives me another reason to watch this movie! Not to mention that it’s from the creators of such hit movies like “Ice Age” and “Rio”.

I hope Nuffnang Philippines will sponsor the advance screening of this “Epic” movie. It will be shown in the country on May 24, 2013.

The Love Yourself Project will have a special screening of Markki Stroem’s movie Slumber Party on May 21, 2013 at the Robinson’s Galleria Cinema 2 at 7:00 PM.

Slumber Party was inspired by that famous YouTube video about a group of gay friends and their reaction when Venus Raj became part of the Top 15 in Miss Universe 2010.

Markki Stroem was also nominated in the 10th Golden Screen Awards for Movies (2013) in the Best Breakthrough Performance by an Actor category.

The Hassle of Getting My Back Pay from Transcom Asia

You really don’t judge a call center company by the way that they welcomed you to their office. You judge them by how fast they’ve handled the release of your back pay. By that standard, Transcom Asia is definitely a failure when it comes to handling back pay.

I’ve submitted my fully-signed clearance in the first week of February 2013. I was given my Non-Regularization Notice and a leaflet advising me how to make a follow-up on my back pay complete with all the instructions on how to get it as well as the duration for the release of it (45 business days).

Today is the 51^st business day since I’ve submitted my completed clearance form. Prior to this, I’ve already sent them emails to the person indicated in the leaflet, who are Brian Manalo (brian.manalo@transcom.com) and a certain Emma (emma.60124@nucomm.net). I never received a reply from them. I sent another follow-up email regarding my back pay.

I also called the number indicated at that leaflet: 702-2400 extensions 38347 and 38029, which according to the leaflet is the Employee Relations. I called both numbers multiple times and I’m being directed to the Manila Recruitment – and no one is answering the phone. The leaflet also indicated that the hours to make follow-up calls are Mondays to Thursday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. I’ve called between that duration and I’m being directed to a voicemail. So I left my name, my concern and my phone number – but I’m not expecting a call from them.

If only call center companies like Transcom Asia would release the back pay as fast as they terminated an agent, then we could probably recommend their company to our friends. All I’m saying is, Transcom Asia is so fast when it comes to terminating their agents (without even an admin hearing for a non-regular agent) but is very slow and inefficient when it comes to handling back pay.

It’s really a hassle getting my back pay from Transcom Asia. It’s no fun getting back pay here.

Finally… the sequel to “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” is upon us! 20th Century Fox Philippines finally upload the international trailer of “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Sea of Monsters”.

The first Percy Jackson movie was released in 2010 and I thought that they’ll release the sequel a year after. After almost 3 years, the sequel is scheduled to be released in the Philippines on August 15, 2013. The cast are still the same with Logan Lerman reprising his role as the son of Poseidon. First Pinoykon

So You Really Wanted To Work In A Call Center?

I have given 12 things to expect from working in a call center. If those reasons didn't stopped you from applying for that call center post, then probably the following reasons will:

You live on a day-to-day basis – When an agent is on training, he can be eliminated (terminated) if he didn't pass the Berlitz, which is a major thing in an ISP account. Then an agent is subjected to a training bay also known as nesting. If he didn't pass that, he can go on an extended nesting or be eliminated. After that comes the Quality Assurance (QA) certification. At the agent's 5^th month he'll be evaluated again. If he misses out some points (on some metrics) on a 5-point system, he can get terminated. He'll then sign a Non-Regularization Document and then he'll have to process his Clearance. Even if a call center agent do get regularized, he can still easily be terminated by chatting non-business related topics, accessing his Facebook (or Twitter) account or surfing YouTube. The worst case I experienced was with AT&T Convergys. We are around 20 in our wave (batch), 1 was eliminated during language training and only 2 agents got regularized (not including me).
Maximum tax deductions – I envy the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW), specially those who work in countries that doesn't have Income Tax. A call center agent can get a basic salary of 14 to 18 thousand Philippine Pesos but we also get the maximum tax deductions. In Sufferland for example, my average monthly tax deductions is P5,000. I also envy our Senators who gets millions as additional funds. This is the reason why any news of graft and corruption in the government is bad news fro any high-taxed call center agent.
You have a chance to use your life insurance – At least, call center agents have something in common with the police, fire fighters, soldiers and security guards. Call center agents have a high chance to get mugged (hold-up) and get murdered because most agents work at night. A call center agent probably knows other call center agents who got mugged or murdered. I have call center friends who got mugged but thankfully, I never had a wavemate who got murdered.
Call Center Agents are susceptible to certain illnesses – If a sales lady is susceptible to varicose veins, a call center agent is susceptible to migraine, sore throat, stress, high blood, back pain, cough, colds, and flu. The lower the Average Handing Time (AHT), the higher chance of being sick. My previous account in Sufferland (US accounting software) had the highest AHT that I've experienced – 30 minutes. Most accounts that I have as a Technical Support Representative (TSR) are Internet Service Providers (ISP) and these accounts usually have 18 minutes AHT. I never handles any Customer Service Representative (CSR) accounts yet for a Telephone Company (Telco) which I heard have an AHT of 3-6 minutes. That's around 50+ calls a days which is certainly a pain in the neck!
No reason to be absent – It became a highly-debated issue, during the Habagat incident, regarding the Emergency Leaves (EL). Even though the Philippine President declared that there's no work even in private corporations, there are rumors that Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) still require their agents to come to work. Yes, even if it's flooding! The only accepted reasons for an agent to be absent is either being sick (requires a Medical Certificate) or involved in an accident (vehicular or being mugged), which requires Police Report. This also depends on the Team Leader (TL) whether he'll accept other reasons aside from these two.
No retirement plans – I haven't encountered a call center that has a retirement plan. I envy those who are working for pharmaceutical companies. Some other regular private companies offer travel packages. Such thing is non-existent in call center companies like Alorica Philippines, Sykes Asia, Convergys, Teleperformance, Sufferland and Transcom Asia. In those call center companies, I never encountered any summer company outing. There are some funds for Team Buildings (TB) but that's rare. Usually Team Buildings are financed by the agents themselves. I can only remember Sykes Asia and Sufferland as the only ones that gave budget for our Team Buildings.
No career path – Call Centers often advertise heavily on having career paths for agents. That there is career growth in the call center. They would often tell the stories of some of their agents who got promoted fast. What they failed to mention is the figures. How many agents from a certain wave got promoted against the attrition rate? How many got regularized? How many got passed the 1 year period? In our wave at Alorica Philippines, we're around 20 agents and only 1 got promoted to a Team Lead post after 3-4 years. In Sykes Asia, none became a TL. Same goes with Convergys and Teleperformance. In Sufferland, we're almost 30 in our wave and only 1 got promoted as Team Leader. Here at Transcom Asia, we haven't reached our 6^th month and 4 out of 18 agents is no longer with us. Call Centers are very poor when it comes to Statistics. In fact, I never heard any study at all regarding attrition rates. Of course, call centers would never conduct such a study although it's common knowledge that there’s no such thing as security of tenure in call centers, in most cases.
Lack of chitchats and camaraderie – This can be attributed to the EOP, shifting schedules, different Rest Days (RD), large number of agents in an account, different teams, no permanent station, etc. In fact, in every wave that I became part of, I only became close friends with 1-2 people. I hardly know my former wavemates! Well, probably, it's also because I'm not the friendly type of agent. I envy other workers in other industries. At least they have a regular lunch and work buddy! In the 6 call centers that I have worked for so far, only 1 asked me to be the Ninong of his child. It's simply because we never knew each other that well. My motto actually became “savor the friendship as long ast it last”. You never know when each of your will be terminated. Pretty pessimist? Well, I based it on experience.
It's a daily routine – No matter how much call centers tell that each customer is different, at the end of the day, what you did is exactly the same as yesterday. In fact, you could go on a vacation for a week and when you come back, nothing is change. You can take call ASAP. We have this thing called Top Call Drivers and our calls would basically revolves around these issues. Right now, my Top Call Drivers are computers not booting into Windows, monitors that have no display and printers that are not printing. There are some agents who can take calls half-asleep! The lower the AHT, the higher chance of having routine calls. I envy the teachers when it comes to this. At least they have a different topic each day! With a call center agent, each day is like a template.

So that's 21 reasons you should consider before applying for a call center position. Before a construction job (assistant to the Site Engineer) and being a call center agent, the latter is definitely way harder! It's not easy to be a call center agent.

The next time you meet a call center agent, don't think of him as someone who simply can speak English fluently. It's hard enough to pass that Initial Interview and it's definitely harder to stay alive in this cutthroat industry.

With all these setbacks in working in a call center, are you sure that you really wanted to be one of us?

So You Want To Work In A Call Center?

I hate it when people think that working in a call center is easy. They have the impression that you only need to speak in English and you'll survive working in the industry. Well, applying for the job is easy. Staying in the job is the hard part. You can always be terminated anytime for simple reasons.

Let me review some of the things that makes working in a call center a pain in the butt.

Not all call centers regularized their agents on the 6^th month – In Alorica Philippines, I worked for 8 months (in 2007) and I was never regularized nor given an increase. I heard other call centers with similar policies. They simply don't regularized their agents!
The job is co-terminus with the account – You can find this line in almost all contracts in the BPO industry. When an account close or get transferred to another site or vendor, you'll most probably be put in a floating status. You don't get paid because you're not working. If you're lucky, the BPO company would find an alternate account for you the soonest time. This happened to me in Alorica Philippines and Sufferland.
No cellphone on the production floor – This is common even in non-financial accounts. I envy government employees when it comes to cellphone use. This is only applicable to agents. If you caught using a cellphone in the production floor, it would automatically merit an Incident Report (IR) or Notice To Explain (NTE).
No sleeping in the production floor – This is what I envy the most from security guards. This is also applicable to agents only. If you are caught with your eyes closed, specially from the TL of the other team, or from the Operations Manager (OM), you'll get an IR or NTE. In worst case scenario, they'll ask you to log-out after you call and go home. Next day, you'll talk to the Human Resources (HR) instead of your customer.
Everything is timed – I envy the company drivers when it comes to using company time. They can always say that they're stuck in traffic. Whereas for a call center agent, even the minutes that you spend peeing is timed. In Transcom Asia, they don't have bladder breaks. They'll deduct it from your breaks which is only 30 minutes (two 15-minute breaks). QA on the other hand, is very strict with hold time. It's an auto-zero in QA (Transcom Asia). Dead air is also timed. A dead air (customer and agent are both silent) of more than 10 seconds is auto-zero (auto-fail) in QA, at least in Transcom Asia.
The customer is ALWAYS right – It's the universal motto in the call center industry. It's true even in Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) surveys. There is no way to dispute a rating by the customer even if it's ridiculous. In AT&T Convergys for example, everyone who handled the same case of an irate customer would all have the same CSAT. If the customer rated the on-site technician of 0%, all the call center agents who handled the same ticket would get the same rating. Even if the customer clearly stated in the survey that it's the on-site technician that he's complaining about. An escalation from customer would sometimes end up in an agent's suspension for N days. N being a number between 5 and 15.
There is no excuse for being late – Specially during trainings (first few months from hired date). I envy the public school teachers on this. A call center agent incurs infraction for every instance of late. Even for 1 minute. In Transcom Asia for example, it's point system. An agent is only allowed up to 6 points before he gets an NTE for excessive lates. One late equals 0.75 point. So it would only take 8 lates before an agent writes his explanation to an NTE. There are numerous agents that were terminated because of excessive lates.
There is no such thing as Union – A call center agent cannot join a union. I never heard of such thing as Employees Union in any call center. I'm certain that there is no union in Alorica Philippines, Sykes Asia, Convergys, Teleperformance, Sufferland and Transcom Asia. Do you know any call center that has a union?
EOP all the time – I envy the Filipino subject teachers on this. It's English Only Policy (EOP) and not English Or Pilipino specially in the production floor. An NTE or IR is usually served to an agent who violates this policy specially if it's the client or country manager who caught an agent. However, the implementation of the sanction varies from center to center and from TL to TL. In Transcom Asia, it's very strict when it comes to EOP.
Paperless environment – Similar to EOP policy, the paperless environment thing varies from center to center and also depends on the account. This is usually strictly followed in financial and credit card accounts. In Sykes Asia on the other hand, we are allowed to bring books and magazines in the production floor since our account is DSL. In all other call centers that I worked for, it's always a paperless environment, except for NTE and IR. Those are some of the things that can be printed on paper.
No food allowed in the workstation – Applicable in most call centers. There are some call centers that allows snacks to be sneaked in at the production floor as long as you're not using spoon and fork to eat these foods or as they say, it's bite-size.
No permanent workstation – I envy the people working at the HR, Payroll or Finance who always have a permanent station which they can personalize. The most tolerable call center that I worked for when it comes to workstation is Sykes Asia. They at least allowed us to personalized our workstation and to have a permanent team bay. The worst is AT&T Convergys. You'll go out for lunch and your station would be given to other agents.
These are some of the things that I hate about working in a call center. I'll post my reasons #13 to 21 tomorrow. Until then, take care!

“Safe Haven”

After the success of “The Notebook”, “Message In A Bottle”, “Dear John” and “The Lucky One”, comes another movie adaptation worth watching -- “Safe Haven”.

“Safe Haven” is written by renowned author Nicholas Sparks. It will be shown on SM Cinemas on February 20, 2013.

The gorgeous guy in the movie poster below is Josh Duhamel. He appears in the “Transformers” trilogy.

The Eusebio Political Dynasty

"The State shall guarantee equal access to public service and prohibit political dynasty as may be defined by law".

- The Constitution, Article 2, Section 26

On January 24, 2011, during the First Regular Session of the 13th Congress, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago passed her Senate Bill No. 2649 entitled "The Anti-Political Dynasty Act" which aims to prohibit the establishment of political dynasties.

However, I agree on Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes when he said that "only people's initiative can pass anti-dynasty bill" (The Manila Times, 09 November 2012).

Of course, most legislators would oppose such law since they would protect their own interest first. The purpose of the Anti-Political Dynasty Act is "to prohibit spouse or person related within the second civil degree of consanguinity or affinity to an incumbent elective official seeking re-election to hold or run for any elective office in the same province in the same election." (The Manila Times, 09 November 2012).

As a citizen of Pasig City, I've seen the Eusebio family ruled our City for the past 21 years! I believe it's a very long period to be under one political dynasty and this should stop soon.

With the coming 2013 Election, incumbent mayor Robert "Bobby" Eusebio is going to run for a 2nd term. That would be another 3 years under the leadership of the Eusebio family. Pasig City is literally stamped with the "e" sign (for Eusebio) and is colored blue and yellow (color code for Eusebio family).

In all these years that I've been living in Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City under the Eusebio Family, I've only seen 1 construction project that directly affected me as a citizen -- the construction of the Santa Rosa de Lima Bridge.

This is the reason why I dream of the passage of The Anti-Political Dynasty Bill and why I'm hoping to see a mayor in Pasig City Hall that is NOT related with the Eusebio Family. It would be a breath of fresh air when that happens.

Here’s another movie to look forward to -- “The Host”. It’s based on the new novel of Stephenie Meyer – the same author who gave us the Twilight Saga. The poster reminds me of “Twilight” though – 1 girl, 2 guys. I have no idea on what the novel is all about but hopefully, I’ll be able to read it soon.

“The Host” opens March 29, 2012.

Markki Stroem in “Slumber Party”

My crush Markki Stroem is one of the casts of the upcoming movie “Slumber Party”. This is one of the movies that will be shown in the Cinema One Originals 2012 Festival. “Slumber Party” will have a premiere night on November 30, 2012 7:00 PM at Robinson’s Galleria.

I believe this will be Markki’s first gay role. I’ve watched the trailer and he’s very good with his acting. Aside from Markki Stroem, other stars of the movie that I would love to see is Archie Alemania (“Wazzup Wazzup”) Sef Cadayona. Visit their Facebook page here.

2012 Christmas Party of Transcom Asia

Transcom Asia will have their annual Christmas Part at Club Manila East in Taytay, Rizal on December 8, 2012. This will be a wet and wild pool party and all Transcom Asia employees are invited.
