Happy Friendiversary Kaylah!

As if I needed more proof that Kaylah and I are sometimes freakishly on the same page...I had been planning this super sappy "friendiversary" post for a while and then Kaylah goes and beats me to the punch with one of the sweetest things someone has ever done for me with her "crazy love letter-esque creepfest". That is a direct quote by the way. I prefer "nicest blog post ever" but that's not as funny to read. So, on with my own creepfest.

One year ago today I met one of the coolest ladies ever. Kaylah and I already told you the story of that day in our vlog so I won't bore you with the totally non-boring details of waterslides and giant buckets of water. I will show you this photo though.

Pretty much sums up our day.

It can be really scary meeting someone for the first time and I was very nervous to meet Kaylah. Kaylah's blog was one of my absolute favourites and it kind of blew my mind when we started to become internet friends. A funny little secret...When Kaylah first commented on my blog I told Ivan that "my future best friend commented on my blog today". Called it! (I really hope that doesn't make me sound like a nut!)

The Kaylah that I knew through blog world was definitely awesome but the one I met in person was even better. Kaylah is so full of energy and great ideas, has the best laugh, is extremely thoughtful and best of all just plain fun! It is completely amazing to meet someone with so many shared interests who gets excited about the same strange things that you do and is totally up for having booty shaking practice together in the living room.

I am lucky enough to have a few really great friends that I've stayed in touch with for a long time but I have a very hard time making new friends. I find it difficult to open up and completely be myself with new people. It has been exciting to meet Kaylah and watch our friendship grow from the awkward first moments of 'what should I say?' to the point we are at now where I feel like a can say anything that pops into my head no matter how silly, inappropriate or dorky it might be. And let me tell you, those are the things that pop into my head the most. It is a pretty big deal for me when I feel 100% comfortable around someone and I definitely do around Kaylah. So Kaylah, thank you for letting me be myself...lame jokes included! You is my friend!

Kaylah, you are one of a kind and I am so happy to have met you! I am extremely lucky to have you as a (best) friend. Happy Friendiversary and let's get on finding some tacky best friend jewelry this weekend!

So, as I mentioned the other day, today is my birthday and I am off to the Blog Podium conference to see some blog pals and maybe eat some yummy dinner later.

photo an hour :: on a friday

Ok, so the main purpose of taking a photo an hour last Friday was that I wanted to make sure I took photos at Ivan's show. Well...sometimes things don't work out the way you plan and you kind of forget your plan. And then you're really tired because the band goes on way after your old lady bedtime and you don't want to get out of your chair. Not saying that happened because I'm totally not a loser but let's just say the photos stopped at 5 pm.

There were however some really adorable Farva photos so I had to post this anyways.

7 am :: Hanging out with my ladies.

8 am :: Staying hydrated with my second bottle of the day.

9 am :: Someone is having a tough day at the office.

10 am :: I'm itching to get outside.

11 am :: I guess he worked too hard earlier in the day.

12 pm :: These have since been planted (mostly) but here they are waiting!

1 pm :: Baby pears! Our backyard is full of baby fruit at the moment. It is pretty adorable.
After I refueled with some corn, a little corn cob theif appeared. His little paw kills me!

2 pm :: Finially finished spray painting a cute little shelf.

3 pm :: I snuck a photo of Mr. Diva Anakin while he was trying to tell me it is dinner time.

4 pm :: Thumbs up to nail painting. Don't worry, they got fancier. Photo not included.

5 pm :: Just finished farding my face (according to Balderdash that means putting on makeup). I'm ready to go!

So there was my day!

Today I'm off to film a little video for a potential new blog series I'm really excited about. Have a great day everyone!

Sometimes you just need to try new things. Like olives or tucking in your shirt. I already like olives so I tried the shirt tucking in thing. It's kind of fun, I didn't mind it. Maybe I'll try it again some day.

In case you missed the title...yes this is another Twin Peaks shirt. And in case you were wondering, yes Ivan has a matching one. I probably should have made him take photos with me but I took these while he was at work and actually just thought of that while I was typing. Well, I just gave you something to look forward to.

Also, my hair is a ton of weird colours at the moment but it looks pretty blonde when I wear it pulled back. Pulling it back is also a really good idea for warm weather so it is an all around win.

Today I am taking the car for an oil change, buying some groceries and maybe squeezing in a bit of front yard gardening. I also feel like making something. Not sure what yet...any suggestions? It is a really beautiful day out and I am getting a lovely cool breeze coming in the window so I am really happy at the moment. What are you up to today?

thrift find :: the ones that got away

Hello! I hope all of my Canadian friends are enjoying their long weekend. Saturday I got my first ever migraine (not exciting) and yesterday Ivan and I filled our garden with veggies but then ran out of room. We already have a huge garden but we think we are going to make it a little bigger to fit some more things. I'm really happy that we got a ton of stuff planted though.

I thought I would share some more thrift finds that got away today. You can check out my previously left behind finds here and here.

What: Owl jar.
Where: Value Village (Upper James)
Why I loved it: I thought this little guy would look pretty adorable in our kitchen holding something like owl cookies.
Why I didn't buy it: As cute as I thought he was, they style was not quite right for what I am imagining for our kitchen. I didn't want to spend money on this guy only to replace him with something better suited for our kitchen in a few months. I left him for someone else to enjoy.
Do I wish I bought it: No thank you.

What: Flower afghan.
Where: Value Village (Cambridge)
Why I loved it: As a general rule, I love handmade colourful afghans. If it is in good condition I will almost always buy it.
Why I didn't buy it: This one was in good condition but it was so stiff! It was not even close to being usable and I didn't like the way it felt so although it was pretty there was no way I could buy it.
Do I wish I bought it: No. Just thinking about touching it now is giving me the willies.

What: Head.
Where: Value Village (Upper James)
Why I loved it: I am always super tempted to buy these things. I think they are a bit creepy but really cool. Also, when I was a kid I always wanted one of those Barbie things where you could do her hair but never got one.
Why I didn't buy it: I can't justify spending more than a couple dollars on something like this and they are always more than a couple dollars. I actually saw a different one the next time I was at Value Village. It's like they are taunting me!
Do I wish I bought it: Kind of. I'll make it through the day without one though.

It's fun to thrift and bring home things you really love but it's also fun for me to look back at things I chose to leae behind. It shows me that I do have a bit of willpower when it comes to thrifting.

Did/do you love the show Perfect Strangers? If so you need to play this game. I loved Perfect Strangers growing up and the show made me become obsessed with Chicago. When I was in Grade 5 we had to do a project on a State and I was desperate to do Chicago because of Perfect Strangers. Just so I don't leave you hanging, I did get to do Chicago and I did an amazing job on the project. Thank you Balki & Cousin Larry!

Of course I could not resist wearing some pink and purple and snapping outfit photos while we were visiting the lilacs. The weather was so perfect on Saturday and we tried to spend as much time outside as possible.

I am pretty excited about my guitar necklace! I got it at a store in Guelph but Stick Man is actually on Etsy as well. I have been playing guitar since high school and although I am not super amazing and don't play that much anymore I still love all things music themed. Now I feel like I should pick up a guitar and play a bit today!

You probably can't really tell in these photos but I have lightened my hair a little bit more. I can't wait until it is white again! I really do wish it was pink or purple for this photo though. That would have been so perfect!

I am really in love with this outfit. I go kind of crazy when I put together really matchy outfits. Sometimes I just really love wearing a ton of the same colour. This skirt made me go all crazy matchy last time I wore it too!

I definitely have to mention my shoes because these are currently my favourite! The colour is totally amazing and I love the style with the little heel. They look like flats from the front but give you a tiny bit of height. I feel fancy in them but not too fancy for everyday. I'm totally in love. vlog :: dealing with self doubt

Good morning!

Chantilly and I are back to share another vlog with you today. This time we are talking about something that I think most people experience once in a while, self doubt. Chantilly and I filmed this vlog while I was visiting a few weeks ago and later that day Kyla put up this great post talking about a lot of similar things. I think there's something going around on the internet lately! Chantilly and I have definitely both experienced some self doubt related to blogging and in our vlog we talk about possible causes and some ways to try to kick that doubt out of your head!

I've really been trying lately to do extra things that make me happy, eliminate things that bums me out (if possible) and stay really productive. I really love blogging and I want it to be a long relationship. No thank you self doubt...not interested in hanging out.

Have a great Tuesday! I'll be spending some time in the back garden again pulling dandelions and maybe digging up some grass in our raised bed. I am really bad at digging up grass so I don't love that job.

what i did :: lilacs

When I was a kid, my parents used to take me to the Royal Botanical Gardens to see the lilacs around my birthday. This year since I have been really paying attention to people's gardens & flowers I really wanted to head over to the RBG to smell some lilacs and go for a little walk. Ivan and I made some time this weekend to check it out.

Lilacs are just so pretty! My favourites are the ones that look like the are changing colour as they open. I really love the smell of lilacs but I don't like any artificial lilac scents like candles or air fresheners. There is something about that fake lilac smell that doesn't agree with my nose. Real ones though...so good!

This is my second project since I have decided to make more of my own clothes. I modified this pattern and made myself a cute little peter pan collared shirt!

If I make another one I think I will make a few more modifications because the collar doesn't sit as flat as I would like it to. It is still pretty adorable and fun to wear though. I would like to try making a pointy collared version as well.

I love taking photos in front of our shed door because I look like a giant! The door is obviously not a regular sized door but it makes me laugh when I look at these photos where I am as tall as a door. Only funny to me? Yeah, that happens a lot.

There were more blue jays in the backyard while I was taking these and I managed to snap a photo.

See him hanging out on our plum tree? I think he liked my blue outfit. Next time I need to out prepared with my zoom lens.

Oh yeah, see all those dandelions? They are my mortal enemy this spring. I have pulled almost every single one from our front lawn (there were soooo many) but the back yard is still out of control. I will get you dandelions.

I am pretty obsessed with lilacs at the moment. I really wanted to put one in the front of our house but we ended up getting some other tree instead. I think we still need some lilac action out there. Ivan and I might go to the Royal Botanical Gardens this weekend so that I can get my lilac fix.

I have a lot of things that I would like to do today. I had a not so productive day yesterday but today is feeling better already! It is super sunny so that helps a lot.

Let me just start by saying that this outfit was a huge hit with Ivan's Dad & Grandma. I wore it when we went there last week when we visited them and Ivan's Dad said I looked like I was from the 50's (yes please, I will always accept that compliment) and Ivan's Grandma was very interested in my skirt and even more impressed when I told her that it was second-hand.

I love how green our grass is getting! I never fully realize how much Winter bums me out until Spring really begins. This year I have become very aware of the trees and flowers blooming and I blame home ownership. I find myself checking out people's trees and garden's like the nosiest nosy person ever. I wonder if they see me staring at their house and wonder what the heck I'm so interested in. Well it's either their garden or their home decor. I am also a major window peeker especially if we are walking around at night. This is why I always close our curtains when it gets dark out. I don't want to be peeped on while I'm having an after dinner dance party in the living room!

Anyways...back on topic. I am pretty in love with my necklace and you should definitely pop by in a few hours if you are interested in winning one for yourself! The length is just perfect and the colour makes me very happy.

home :: front yard

First things first. I am very annoyed with myself because I didn't take proper before photos of our front yard. You will just have to trust me that it was an absolute jungle. There were Rose of Sharon everywhere and while many people have assured me that they are beautiful these ones were super overgrown and just generally cramping my style. The area to the right of our porch was absolutely covered with ivy and miscellaneous shrubs that I'm sure at some point looked beautiful but again, my style, they were cramping it. This is the only actual 'before' photo I could find that shows even a little smidge of the garden.

Our house is on the left in the photo. Yeah, we probably could have worked with the plants in there but there was also some crazy weed that had wrapped it's way around everything in the garden! Our solution: rip everything out. I did remember to take a few 'during' photos and here they are.

Do you see that crazy pile! That wasn't even half of what we pulled out of the garden. And now here are some 'during but a bit later in the process' photos.

Ivan, my mom and I spent the day Sunday raking, digging and planting and that is what we have come up with so far. The shrubs will grow larger and I'm hoping that the air conditioner will be covered sooner rather than later. We still need to plant some things on the left side of the porch so it doesn't look so sad a bare. I'm pretty excited to see what everything will look like in a few weeks.

a small challenge for myself

Ivan and I talk a lot about how we want to become more self sustaining and minimize the amount of things that we need to buy. We have been baking our own bread, brewing our own beer, preparing for a big garden this summer, eating at home as much as possible, looking into making our own soap, shampoo, etc.

But then, you know, I see some shoes online or an amazing dress that I feel like I need to have and all of those thoughts of minimizing consumerism kind of get thrown out the window for five minutes while I am making my purchase. This is something that I really want to change about myself. I don't need (and quite frankly, can't afford) to buy everything that I like.

I do love to add new things to my wardrobe but I will be doing it in a different way. Some of you may have heard me mention on Instagram a few weeks back that I made myself a dress. I have tons of fabric and tons of vintage patterns so why the heck have I been buying clothes?

I have decided to set a little challenge for myself not to spend any money on clothes or shoes unless it is an absolute necessity. For example, if an underwear bandit breaks into my house and steals all my undies I will probably have to restock. I feel like I will be able to do ok as I really do have a lot of clothes already in my closet and I am able to make a lot of things by using patterns and fabric I already have.

For my first project I decided to make myself a dress. I used this pattern:

And this fabric that I have been hoarding forever.

The only change I made to this pattern was to eliminate the zipper. This fabric has a bit of stretch to it so that I am able to easily pull it on over my head.

And just because I want to make this "not buying things" thing more fun I have decided to show you three different ways that I styled my dress based on different colour schemes because, let's be honest, I think about my outfits in terms of colour all the time.

I am really happy with my new dress and can't wait to make more things to free up some space in my fabric containers!

To be honest, I actually kind of feel like I'm cheating a little bit with this challenge because 1. I get a few c/o items here and there and 2. I am a mega hoarder and probably already have enough fabric to make myself clothing for the rest of my life. Realistically I'm sure there will be things that I buy just because they would be too much of a pain in the butt to make. I guess my main goal is just to think a little more before I spend.

I have been doing this for a few weeks already without any issues. Although...I have been avoiding thrift stores because it is really hard to turn down amazing thrift finds.

photo an hour :: another day at home

I feel like most of my photo an hours are turning into days at home and I'm ok with that. When I am taking a photo every hour it makes me much more productive during the day. Here is what my day looked like last Wednesday.

7 am :: Starting my morning off with a little bit of crochet.

8 am :: Farva is pretty much the cutest thing ever.

9 am :: Drinking some tea and accidentally flipping off the camera. Also still amazed at how well my sewing machine matches my walls.

10 am :: Having so much fun editing vlogs!

11 am :: Testing lighting for videos.

12 pm :: My thread/sunglasses display.

1 pm :: Prettiest yarn I've ever thrifted and still editing.

2 pm :: Our letters, cute painted Ivan & Elycia (wedding gift from Alex), and some more Farva beans.

3 pm :: Taking outfit photos.

4 pm :: Best snack. Apple with peanut butter.

6 pm :: Yummy yummy dinner.

7 pm :: Ivan talked me into making peanut butter pillows. I blame Kaylah for introducing us to these. Well, blame/thank. They are amazing.

8 pm :: Our green onion "garden".

I love seeing how colourful my days are.

Today I am visiting a friend in Guelph to do a bit of exploring and browsing in the downtown area. I'm pretty excited! What are your plans for today?

This is definitely a twirling dress but please ignore the wrinkles. I did an amazing job steaming my dress to get it completely wrinkle free...and then I went and sat in the car for an hour and undid all my hard work. Oh well! Still pretty!

Today on the ModCloth Blog I'm sharing some of my favourite places to visit when Ivan and I head into Toronto. Are you from the area? I would love to hear about some of the places that you always visit.

This was my first experience taking outfit photos on the actual street and it was stressful but less than I thought it would be. I just tried to act like what I was doing was completely normal and that I was a very important person doing a very important photoshoot. I probably fooled about one person (a toddler walked by and thought I was very impressive).

5. Mungo Crafts in May.

Mungo Crafts is always awesome but in May they will be donating 3 cans of food to a local food bank for every hoodie sold. If you have been eyeing up a Mungo hoodie, May is definitely a great time to buy one! I love mine so much!

4. Violet's great tutorial.

Cinemagraphs are really beautiful and I want to try out this tutorial to make one! Violet's blog is really awesome and so so pretty.

3. Rachel's dining room and DIY table.

I very much like Rachel's decorating style! I always think that I want white walls but once I have them I just can't deal with the lack of colour and end up painting something bright. I loooove looking at how other people decorate with white walls though!

2. Best set of utensils ever!

Ummmmm. Yes. Just thinking about our kitties playing with this is making me crack up!

Today, weather permitting, I plan on tackling the dandelion factory that is operating on our front and back lawn. They are out of control!

Also, last night I grabbed some records from my mom's house including a bunch of Beatles ones and I am so excited to listen to them all! Now instead of listening to the same 5 albums on repeat we have a little more variety.

When I wear this dress I feel very Ziggy Stardust for some reason. I have loved David Bowie since I was a kid (thank you Labyrinth) and lately I have really been enjoying the one David Bowie album I own on vinyl: The Rise & Fall fo Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. It is soooo good.

While I was outside taking these I saw two blue jays hanging out but I wasn't able to get a photo. They were too speedy. Blue jays are a lot larger than I remembered them being and they are so pretty! I also saw a Cardinal in the backyard the same day. It was a bird party!

That door that is falling apart leads to the garage and I love it so much. It kind of needs to be replaced but I just don't think I can do it. The teardrop cut outs are just too good.

Hello and welcome to May!

I am so excited to have another set of Chantilly/Elycia vlogs to share with you guys! Like, so, so excited. Chantilly and I had a lot of fun filming this new set and we can't wait to show you what we got up to. Our first vlog is extra vloggy because we talk about vlogs and give you some suggestions for vlog topics. Vlog. I am trying to use that word as much as possible in this introduction.
