Now, I'm not one to get too mushy gushy on the blog but 10 years ago today Ivan and I decided to officially become "boyfriend and girlfriend". Even though we are now married and have a new anniversary, I still like to remember this one. Today I thought I would share a few silly little things that make me love Ivan so much.

1. Ivan is very considerate. He always:
- replaces the garbage bag if he takes out the garbage
- puts the toilet seat down
- waits for me to sit down before he starts eating (even though I tell him repeatedly he doesn't have to do this)
- keeps track of the toilet paper situation and makes sure we don't run out

2. Ivan is very neat. He always:
- makes the bed
- makes sure the speakers on the TV stand are lined up
- uses the lint roller on every piece of clothing he owns to remove cat hair (he says he doesn't do his pyjamas but he totally does)

3. Ivan has a great sense of humour. He always:
- laughs at my jokes
- tells me I am funny. Sometimes he does this by telling me I am an idiot, which might sound to you like he's being mean but I promise he's not. It's all in the delivery.
- tells me he is funny
- makes really hilarious "cute" faces that are also very cute

4. Ivan is very supportive. He always:
- tells me I'm doing a good job and that he is proud of me
- listens to my ideas and helps make them even better
- encourages me to do what I love
- supports my habit of watching the same shows over and over again

Basically I have found the perfect person for me and I am so lucky that he thinks I'm the perfect person for him too. We genuinely love spending as much time together as possible and I am so happy that Ivan is my husband and my best friend. Ugh, did I get too mushy? Sorry. Let me fix that...what I meant to say was that I guess Ivan's ok and I suppose I'll hang around him for a while longer.

thrift find :: for the office

Ok, so my office is not a typical "office". It is an office/studio/craft room and I love it. It is still very much in the process of being decorated and I have been grabbing all the kitty art that I can at the thrift stores. So far I only have these two thrifted pieces (plus a handful of non-thrifted ones) waiting to be hung. I am so in love with these two pictures...

Normally I don't like anything that involves an even remotely sad looking animal but I love this piece so much! I imagine that I am about to pick this kitty up and give him a big hug to cheer him up and it makes me happy. What? You think that's weird? Ya, I guess it is kind of weird. Moving on...

I really love the style of this and the girl reminds me a little of my Dolly Dears. So cute! I'm trying to decide if I want to paint the frames or leave them as is. Such a tough decision.

Something else I found for my office that isn't a picture is this amazing storage thing-y. In case you were wondering, that is the technical name for it.

This little beauty also came full of random bits and pieces that I may or may not find useful. She is definitely getting a paint job (maybe pink) and I think that she will look adorable hanging out in my studio full of my own things that I may or may not find useful.

Also! I hit the coat JACKPOT a while back and found the greatest winter coat I have ever laid eyes on. When I found it and showed Ivan he even said he liked it which is a big deal because usually he says something like "Yeah, it's ok" or "Don't you have a coat already?" or "Are you ready to go yet?" ;)

No photo of the coat for now but stay tuned. I'm sure it will pop in soon. Not this week though because we are in sunny Florida where winter coats are not necessary!

DIY :: Film Baggies

I don't really love the word "baggie" but it was the working title of this project and I couldn't think of anything else to call them. Pouch...pouch would have been good.

Regardless of what this is called, I thought it would be a cute way to carry used and unused film around in your purse. Another idea is to use one side for regular film and the other side for Instax mini film. If you would like to make one for yourself you will need:

- cute fabric (you could even use an unwanted piece of clothing for the fabric!)
- 2 small pieces of fabric for embroidering on
- embroidery thread
- yarn or ribbon
- sewing needle and thicker yarn needle
- straight pins
- iron
- sewing machine

Let's get started!

1. Cut a piece of fabric that is 11.5" by 12.5".

2. Fold with right sides together. You are folding the longer (12.5") side so that the top edge measures 11.5".

3. Keeping right sides together, sew down both sides of your fabric.

4. Use pinking shears to cut the raw edges of the seams you just sewed.

5. Keeping your pouch inside out, turn down a small hem and iron. It doesn't need to be exact, but around 0.25" is good.

6. Turn down another, larger hem (around 0.75" is what I did) and iron. This tucks in your raw edge and hides it from view.

7. Sew along the bottom edge of your hem. This creates a little tunnel at the top of your pouch that we will put a drawstring through later.

8. Turn your pouch right side out. Take a moment to pat yourself on the back for making it this far.

9. Next you are going to sew a line down the centre of your pouch starting at the line of stitching across the top. Meaning that above the stitch line will not be attached together while the bottom of your pouch will be divided into two sections.

10. Get out your embroidery thread and embroider yourself some labels that say "shoot" and "develop" or "instax" and "35mm" or whatever the heck you would like them to say. I embroidered my labels onto different pieces of fabric that I will sew on in the next step. Place your labels where you would like them to go and pin them down.

11. Stitch your labels on! I used a thin yarn and a yarn needle but you could also use embroidery thread and a regular needle.

12. Next we are going to add a drawstring. I used yarn threaded on a yarn needle again but you could use ribbon and put little slices in your fabric to feed it through. Insert the needle a little off from the centre front of your pouch. Carefully feed your needle through your tunnel and out the other side.

13. Tie little knots in your yarn right beside the holes so that your drawstring doesn't disappear into the tunnel.

You are all done! Put some film in your pouch and I will show you how to tie it up compactly.

Pull your drawstring and tie a knot. Then fold your pouch in half along the centre stitch line. Now you can wrap your drawstring around the top of the pouch and tie a bow.

I hope you found this idea handy! Let me know if you make one for yourself. I actually made this one as a gift so I will be making another one for myself soon!

I took a photo an hour last Friday on just a regular day around the house. Normally I do these photo an hours on extra exciting days but I thought it would be fun to take photos of my day to day routine. Here it is!

:: 8 am ::

Exercised, showered, breakfast eaten and blog post for the day up!

:: 9 am ::

Laundry is happening. At least it looks pretty.

:: 10 am ::

My blog notebook is never far from my side on work days. February even gets some special pink sticky notes.

:: 11 am ::

Finishing up some vlog editing and spit laughing all over my computer because we are so silly!

:: 12 pm ::

Admiring my new phone case and finally remembering to send an important email. Because, you know, I'm a very important person with very important things to do and very important emails to send to very important people.

Ripped off Kaylah's colour scheme and painted some more zig zag nails.

:: 2 pm ::

Anakin actually gets angry if I take too many photos of him, he's such a diva. He will complain, and then eventually leave. This is his "I dare you to take one more photo" face.

Started giving one of my suitcases a makeover.

This is a little project that I started back in January. Just some hearts cut out of paint chips on the wall of my office. I finally grabbed a few more chips so that I can add to this and after seeing this gif I really feel like working on it!

As you can see, I got into the scissors again. I think I am finished with home haircutting for awhile because I am finally happy with my haircut! I got rid of most of the dead ends and now I am actually able to just squish in some curl enhancer and let my hair air dry. It's perfect! Although now I am starting to get the colour change itch again. I clearly have a problem.

I painted my nails yet another version of the zig zag nails that Kaylah and I posted. I go through phases with painting my nails. Right now I am in the "paint them almost everyday" phase. There are just so many possibilities and great nail tutorials out there.

This dress has one of the best necklines I've come across and even though it's a little on the large size (I seriously need to alter this thing) I love to wear it. I have a stack of things in my sewing area that need new buttons, buttons sewn back on, restyles and other minor alterations. It's just one of those jobs that never get priority. At least I know I'll never run out of things to keep me busy!

Caitlin, the lovely lady behind the etsy shop Caitlin Michelle, contacted me about doing a review of some of her knit goodies and I was pretty excited. Caitlin chose the colour and I absolutely love it and all of the pieces she sent along for me to review.

The pattern on the hat is really pretty with lots of cabling. It is very comfy, super well made and perfectly slouchy.

I think fingerless gloves are really cute and these ones are awesome. They get a little tighter around the fingers so that they fit perfectly! These are really great for the mild winter we have been having so far this year.

I think my favourite thing though is the cowl. The scallops on the top and bottom are just too good! Such a beautiful touch that makes me love, love, love this cowl.

Everything is so pretty and the yarn is 100% acrylic which is perfect for me. It is not my style to wear a complete matching set at one time but I guarantee that I will be mixing these pieces in one at a time for the rest of the winter. What is your favourite piece from Caitlin's shop?

tutorial :: zig zag nails

Remember our fancy nails from this photoshoot?

Well, today I'm going to tell you how to fancy up your own nails. You can do this with three different colours like Kaylah did in the photo above or two colours like I did.

The first thing to do is to rip off four or five pieces of tape. Grab some pinking shears and cut zig zags out of the tape. You can get two or three zig zag strips from each piece of tape and you will need one zig zag for each nail. A good way to cut to make sure your points line up is to lay the tape on one edge of your scissors like I did in the photo.

Once you have cut your tape stick it to the edge of a table and paint your nails the base colour. The colour you paint as the base will be the colour that ends up in the middle of your nails.

Wait until your base coat is very dry and then lay one of your zig zag tape strips across the middle of your nail.

If you are doing the two colour variation you can just paint all the way over your taped nail. If you are going for three colours you need to carefully paint one colour on the bottom of the tape and one colour on the top of the tape. To paint the bottom you can just start at the cuticle as you normally would and then stop once you are on the tape. For the top, just start on the tape and paint the end as you normally would. Make sure that you do not paint the nail polish on too thick or some may leak under the tape and look yucky when you pull it off.

I usually only leave the tape on for a few seconds after the painting is finished. Pull it off in one quick motion. Repeat the process for the rest of your nails. It is a good idea to let one hand dry before you work on the next hand to prevent accidental smudging.

Once all your nails are finished add a top coat and admire your beautiful fingers!

I love these nails so much and the colour possibilities are pretty much endless!

what i'm working on :: granny square afghan

I am so excited about my granny square afghan progress, even more so after I laid them all out to take these photos. I started making squares right at the end of January and have made 36 so far but I still have a really long way to go. Call me crazy, but Ivan and I decided it would look cool if I made this the same size as the duvet cover on our bed...our king sized bed. So, this is probably going to take me a long time to finish. I love crocheting granny squares (they were the first thing I learned to crochet) and making them all in different colours for this blanket is keeping it really fun for me.

I am really excited about making blankets at the moment. I like the idea that they may be passed on for generations through our family and my grandchildren and great grandchildren will have fun choosing their favourite square on this granny square blanket. I don't usually think about things like that but it just keeps popping into my head as I'm working on these squares.

Ok enough being sappy! In case you are wondering, I did finish my chevron afghan (on schedule too) but I will show you that another time. Probably when we finally do a home tour which I'm sure will be sometime next year because those kind of things seem to take forever to get around to ;)

On the day of our outfit shoot Kevin was in charge of Kaylah's camera for the main photos and Ivan was in charge of my camera to snap some behind the scenes footage. I love behind the scenes stuff so I am really excited to share these photos!

These were our faces when Kevin told us the memory card was full! Never fear though, Kaylah quickly realized that she had another one.

Sometimes you just need to have a dance party. (Otherwise known as a failed jump shot)

Now not only do I want to make videos of everything, I want to make behind the scenes of everything. Kaylah put together her own behind the scenes post so you can hop over there and see which photos she chose!

Kaylah and I both agreed that last weekend was the most fun weekend we have ever spent together. Hanging out is super fun but hanging out doing blog stuff is just off the charts. One thing that really made our weekend was shooting these outfit photos together. It was so much fun! Kevin and Ivan were fantastic sports, each in charge of at least one camera, snapping away for what probably felt like forever to them!

We had another plan for our outfit post that kind of fell through but we are so happy that it did. It inspired us to put together almost completely thrifted outfits and it also inspired our thrifting video. As you can see, I thrifted a good portion of my outfit on our thrift day! Kaylah and I were kind of obsessed with how awesome the colours in our outfits looked together and I especially like the photos that include our coats because of the pretty colour overload.

This is definitely my favourite outfit post to date and we also have some "behind the scenes" photos from the shoot that Ivan took to share with you later today!

photo an hour :: cupcake contest

Yesterday Ivan and I went to visit our friend Alex in Toronto and eat some vegan cupcakes. I snapped a photo or two for each hour of our day.

9 am :: After exercising and breakfast I painted my nails to get the day started.

10 am :: Sleepy Farva and some pretty yarn that is slowly turning into a granny square blanket.

11 am :: Ivan playing guitar and Anakin doing some light tail cleaning.

12 pm :: On the road to Toronto we treated ourselves to coffee/hot chocolate.

1 pm :: Alex's dog Arthur is so adorable!

2 pm :: After waiting in a line that ended up growing super gigantic we got to sample some vegan cupcakes/baked goods.

3 pm :: After the sampling we got to rate how yummy we thought the goodies were.

4 pm :: After overloading on sugar we decided to eat some real food and grabbed dinner at Hogtown Vegan. So delicious.

5 pm :: Walking back to Alex's place.

6 pm :: A slightly terrifying, slightly hilarious Barbie display inside a window.

We had a really great day but now we are totally on a sugar detox! It was so yummy but I think we really over did it yesterday. However, I may make an exception for my favourite thing from the bake off...The Lumberjack donut from Bunners.

Today we are doing a few things around the house and maybe finally working on our wedding thank you cards. Have a great Sunday!

2. This adorable haircut.

I was debating giving myself this haircut but chickened out and just trimmed off a bit more of my dead ends. I feel like I would want to call in professional help on that one. It's pretty tricky to cut the back of your hair! Ack, so tempted!

That last dress is my favourite dress shape I think. The squarish neckline is so pretty, the sleeves are perfect and I love the length. I kind of want to be ridiculous on Valentine's day and wear all red. Good idea?

What are your plans for the day? I have some trashy reality television to catch up on while I tidy my office and finish up some guest posts. I really want to go for a walk today too, I just wish it was sunny out! Have a great Friday!

thrift find :: Ohio Thrift Extravaganza

I'm so happy that so many of you enjoyed the thrifting video that Kaylah and I made! After seeing Kaylah's post sharing what she found during our trip I decided that I would like to share what I found as well. I actually got way more stuff than I realized!

My haul: a suitcase that apparently belonged to Candy, 3 dresses, 1 skirt, 2 belts, 1 sweater & two pairs of cowboy boots. There is actually one more thing I forgot to photograph but you will see it soon enough and one more awesome thing that I'll tell you about in a minute.

Full disclosure...the blue dress with the white collar is not really a thrift find. It was from Sweet Lorain which I would say is more of a vintage shop. Ivan actually picked it out for me! Oh, and see the flowers to the left of the dress? That is a sweater that is just too cute for words that I found at an estate sale! I didn't get a better photo of it but I'm sure you'll see me wearing it soon.

Kaylah mentioned the boots I found and here they are! As awesome as the boots are my favourite find was actually something a little weird...

Lights!! I have been thinking about getting some studio lights for a while now and then Ivan spotted these babies at one of the thrift stores we visited for $8.00! All four lights work and I have been playing around with how to best use them to light my photos on dark days. All of these photos were actually taken using these lights because my office was super dark this morning.

Kaylah and I have been bursting with excitement to share this thrifting video that we shot on the weekend. I'm so glad we ended up doing it and we need to send out a special thanks to our guys for helping film and edit this little project. We had a really fun Saturday evening putting all the clips together which may have included me talking like a bossy video editor and all of us almost falling asleep sitting up by the end of it all.

Ok, ok, I'll stop blabbering. Let's be serious though, you probably aren't reading any of this and just skipped directly to the video.

Hope you loved it! Kaylah and I can't wait to make more fun videos next time we get together!
