Release: InData 3.6 for InDesign 2024-2026

This release introduces a new set contents of statement.

Changes

Adds a «set [the] contents of picture number to expression» statement that imports an image directly from expression into the picture frame indexed by number (starting with 1, counting from the start of the prototype, ignoring the effect of conditionals). Expression provides the “bits” of the picture, in any format supported by InDesign’s Place (PNG, JPEG, EPS, PDF, etc.), encoded as a Base64 text string. An empty expression is handled like a missing picture, where the import either stops with a “no encoded data to import” error or ignores the missing picture if the “Keep importing after missing pictures” preference is selected. The image format’s default settings are used so that no UI is shown for the import. No file link is generated for the import.
Adds a «set [the] contents of textframe number to expression» statement that imports text directly from expression into the text frame indexed by number (starting with 1, counting from the start of the prototype, ignoring the effect of conditionals). Expression provides either plain text or the raw “bits” of a text format supported by InDesign’s Place (InDesign Tagged Text, Word, plain text, etc.) encoded as a Base64 text string. If expression is empty, nothing is imported. The text format’s default settings are used so that no UI is shown for the import.
Adds an encoding option to the filecontents(path[, encoding]) operator. In addition to “windows”, “mac”, and “unicode”, the encoding parameter can now be “raw” (or “binary”) to return the untranslated contents of the specified file as a Base64-encoded text string.
Treats a path segment with no separator in a picturefolders statement as a POSIX-style relative path instead of an old HFS-style absolute path. For example, in «set picturefolders to "xyz"», xyz is now tried as the name of a folder within the document’s folder (POSIX-style relative path) rather than as the name of a volume (HFS-style absolute path). In the rare situation where a single path segment needs to be seen as an HFS-style volume name, simply append an HFS-style colon separator, like «set picturefolders to "xyz:"». (macOS only)

This patch mainly addresses issues when importing directly from an Excel file.

Changes

Preserves rich-text override formatting when importing data directly from Excel worksheets. Behind the scenes, InData uses XPress Tags to capture font, font size, and font face (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, and subscript) changes where they differ from the cell’s base style (“Normal”, “Good” or “Bad,” for example). If any tags are inserted, InData forces defaultisstyled to true for the import such that all fields are «put», by default, as styled XPress Tags. If you have fields that need to ignore Rich Text, use «put nonstyled» for them in your prototype.
Fixes the disappearance of special characters (like bullets) when importing directly from an Excel file.
Fixes a problem introduced in the 3.5.1 release that could cause scripted imports to fail with a “[P19] This type of anchored item is not currently supported” error for prototypes containing anchored pictures (and other normally-recognized anchored items).

This patch fixes string comparisons that should be case insensitive.

Fixes a problem introduced in the 3.5.1 release that made the string comparison operators is, =, is not, !=, is in, is not in, and contains case sensitive (such that "a" = "A" was incorrectly reporting false, for example). With this release, "a" once again equals "A" (and "å" and "Ä" and…). (macOS only)
