Apple has finally done it! They added back the one feature I had been waiting for in iTunes 11— album art in the song view. So I finally took the leap and did the iTunes 11.0.3 update. I’ll say right up front— this update isn’t for everyone. If you’re still waiting on Cover Flow to reappear— you may be waiting a long time! Honestly, I don’t think it’s ever coming back. But hey … if enough people send Apple their feedback/requests on the Apple iTunes Feedback Page … it could certainly happen. It took 3 updates for Apple to come to their senses on album art in song view. Who knows!

The list of what’s been updated is not terribly long, but it got my attention on a few counts. Here’s what appears on the Apple Website:

About iTunes 11.0.3

This version of iTunes comes with several new features and improvements, including:

New MiniPlayer. MiniPlayer now includes a beautiful new view that showcases your album artwork. In addition, a progress bar is now built right into MiniPlayer.

Improved Songs View. You can now enjoy your album artwork while in Songs view.

Multi-Disc Albums. Albums with multiple discs now appear as a single album.

This update also provides performance improvements when searching and sorting large iTunes libraries.

The new Mini Player seem pretty cool, though I don’t remember what the old one looks like, since I downgraded to iTunes 10.7 after installing the initial release of iTunes 11 and not liking it. I like the Up Next List. Do wish you could drag it to ANY size you’d like … but … oh well.

And yes … the new Songs View … just like the old songs view … but the iTunes 11 version of it. I can live with it. Sad that’s all the excitement I can muster … but at least it’s there.

The other big improvement is Apple speeding up searches in large music libraries. With 20,279 songs in my library it’s certainly better. It was another reason why I downgraded previously. The only thing is you may have to wait a while for the speed to occur. When I first opened iTunes 11.0.3 and trying a search … it was PAINFUL! But as I let it sit and got on with other exploring and came back and did searches later … much snappier. There must be some indexing process that must occur after the initial startup. Now it seems pretty speedy! One word of caution, when searching only search on the main part of a band/artist’s name. So if I was searching for “The Clash” I’d search for “Clash” instead. The reason being, search occurs as you type, so if there are hundreds of bands with the word “The” in the beginning … it GRINDS to find.

So I’m a happy camper. Your mileage may vary. But also know if you upgrade/update to 11.0.3 from iTunes 10.7 you can downgrade back to 10.7. I did a How To on the very subject. Hope you like iTunes 11.0.3 as much as I do! Hope Apple learned a lesson here too! Happy listening!

There are so many companies out there that will offer you SPAM filtering for a price. Some moderate, some not so. But for the everyday guy or gal who has a domain or two and is tired of paying for Internet based, or computer based SPAM filtering— have I got news for you! MX GuardDog: A Dream Come True: No SPAM! Oh and did I mention the service can be free?

I have been using BlueHost.com as my web hosting company for many years. I use them for both my personal domain go2jo.com and my business domain emacconsulting.com. I have been pretty happy with their service, tech support, features, and cost. I refer many of my clients to them. Like any good hosting company, they offer a variety of SPAM filtering options, including SPAM Assassin, and even Google’s Postini. But for as long as I’ve used either I have had issues with both. With SPAM Assassin, though I had extensive white and black lists, plus hundreds of individual filters— SPAM still got through. Sometimes I’d would get literally 40-50 eMails a day that would make it through all that filtering and my blacklist. To top it all off, there was no way to easily add a piece of SPAM to the filtering.

With Postini, BlueHost, since they partner with them, charged a very reasonable price for each eMail address I needed filtered. My biggest gripe with Postini was its antiquated interface and over aggressive filtering. Many good eMails would need to be released from quarantine and whitelisted. Again, having to use the web interface was frustrating, to say the least— especially on an iPhone. Almost impossible!

Yesterday, while being inundated with yet more SPAM to my InBox I did a search for “Internet SPAM Flittering”, — again — and though I got many hits, there was one that piqued my interest— “Spam Filtering Service – Free Email Protection By MXGuarddog.com“. Free you say? Click!

After going through their website, being my usual skeptical self, reading and perusing their FAQ, and searching for online reviews— I was intrigued even more about their service and “payment model”. If I wanted to use their service, all I had to do was include text URL links from any of my website pages back to the MX GuardDog website. They even have a page on their website that generated the links for you, and kept track of my credits. They also allow a you to “buy credits” at a very reasonable price if you don’t want to use the free linking method. But if you own your own domain and website, the linking method is too easy to pass up! Plus they give you a 30 day free trial period. It’s all good!

I decided to go for it! I read the instructions on the MX GuardDog website, went to my BlueHost.com C-Panel and configured my MX mail records to point to MX GuardDog’s URLs, changed a few other settings and that was it. Once the new MX records propagated, my SPAM was being filtered.

While I was waiting for the MX records to update, I went back to the MX GuardDog site & started producing links to pages on both my eMac & go2jo sites. Since you only need one credit per month for each eMail address you want filtered, I only needed two credits per month for my two addresses being filtered on two separate domains. I might have gone a little overboard linking— I now have 150 credits! But that’s okay! You can never be too rich with credits! As long as you have enough to get through a month … a year …. or four or five.

Being I use WordPress for both my websites, it was easier for me to create a sidebar widget that would appear on every page of my website. Then all I had to do was copy the URL from heavily trafficked pages on my website and use the GuardDog interface to make the link connections and get credits. What’s even more amazingly cool … the higher ranked a page you link to is, the more credits your receive for the link. A normal link will get you a minimum of 2 credits. I have some very heavily trafficked pages that got me 25 credits a pop, some 10. So it’s easy to rack up credits quickly with the right pages. Also, you don’t have to be like me and do everything at once, but I thought it easier to accumulate enough credits so I don’t have to do anything for several years. That’s just me.

Like any other SPAM filter, the occasional piece of SPAM gets delivered to my InBox. I can live with that. What I love is, all I have to do is forward that eMail to spam@mxguarddog.com and THEY will examine it and adjust their filtering accordingly. How easy is that! I’ve also added MX GuardDog as a business in my address book, and set the first name of the contact to SPAM and the last to MX GuardDog. Now when I forward a piece of SPAM that gets through all I have to do is start spelling SPAM & the address self populates and I hit send! This works on my iPhone as well … which I LOVE LOVE LOVE! Almost TOO easy!

Okay. I realize this sounds like a love letter, more than a review … but in the short time I’ve been using this service … I’m enamored by its ease of use, its web interface and its ingenious credit system. All in all … even as a diehard “cat person” I’m trusting this dog to watch over my eMail accounts and keep me safe and SPAM-free.

If any of you would like a complete “How-To” on setting MX GuardDog up, I can certainly do that in another post. Please let me know in the comments. Though the instructions and interface on the MX GuardDog website are pretty clear. Or if you’d like you can hire me to get you all set up. Either way … Good luck and happy filtering!

But with the advent of a few iOS releases since, and the amount of traffic that post gets, I thought it time to put together an update to “How To: Create A Folder in iPhone Mail” … because now you can.

More accurately, the new title should be ‘How to create a mailbox in Mail on iOS 5 or greater.

The old question …

Q: How do I create a folder in the iPhone Mail app in iOS 1-4?

A: YOU CAN’T!

The new question …

Q: How do I create a folder in the iOS Mail app in iOS 5 & 6?

A: YOU CAN!

And here’s how …

What most people would consider a ‘folder’ Apple calls a ‘mailbox’ … don’t know why. That’s just the way it is. With that said, let’s get started. It’s a fairly easy process.

Start by opening the Mail app on your iOS device.

1. Select “Edit”.

2. Select “New Mailbox”.

3. In the “Name” field type your folder’s name. Select “Save”

4. You now have a new folder.

If that’s all you wanted to do, select “Done” and that’s it. You’re ready to use the folder you created.

If you want to create a subfolder within the folder you created, read on.

5. Select “New Mailbox”

6. Type the name of your new folder in the “Name” field. Then select the “Mail Location” button.

7. Select the folder you’d like the new folder in. You will be sent back to the previous screen.

8. Select “Save”.

9. Select “Done”.

10. You now have a folder within a folder.

If you need more just repeat the steps above until you’ve created the folder/mailbox hierarchy you need.

If the mail account you’ve created your folders in is an IMAP mail account, the folders you’ve created on your iPhone or iPad will be saved back to you mail server & show up in your desktop mail application too if it’s also set up as an IMAP account.

If your mail is set up as POP, any folders/mailboxes you’ve created on your iPhone or iPad will only be on the device you’ve created them on. They will not sync back to your computer, or other iOS devices.

If you don’t understand that last little bit a quick lesson:

POP vs IMAP

POP

POP, Post Office Protocol, also known as POP3, is an E-mail protocol that is used when people wish to have a copy of their E-mail messages, along with any attachments, to be downloaded to their computer for viewing. Depending on program configuration, these messages may be automatically deleted from the server once it is received, or at some future time. Messages sent, moved, or deleted from a computer using POP can only be viewed on that individual computer’s folders. They cannot be viewed on other computers connecting to that E-mail account, including Webmail. This option is most recommended for users who like to keep a backup of all their messages.

IMAP

IMAP, Internet Message Access Protocol, is an E-mail protocol that is used when people wish to always have their messages, including sent messages and message folders, saved on the server. Depending on program configuration, these messages may be temporarily saved on the computer for offline viewing. All messages and folders can be viewed from any computer connecting via IMAP, including Webmail. This option is most recommended for users who connect to E-mail accounts from many computers.

And that’s it. You now know how to create a folder and subfolders on any iOS device under iOS 5 or 6.

If you find this helpful, can you help me out and make a donation via my PayPal widget? Or if you’re in the NJ & NY area and you or someone you know needs my consulting services … I need new clients. Hurricane Sandy has seriously effected my business here on the Jersey shore, and my livelihood. One thing I’ve been reminded of recently … there’s no shame in asking for what you need … you just might get it. Thanks … Joe

UPDATE 05.16.2013: Apple updated iTunes 11 to 11.0.3. With this update Album Art was added back to the Songs View. The Mini Player was also updated, as were other features and bug fixes. They also increased the speed of searches in large music libraries. Sorry to say, Cover Flow is still not back. I wrote a new blog article about 11.0.3 because I did do the upgrade & will use it now. But before I went crazy I tested that iTunes 11.0.3 can also be downgraded back to iTunes 10.7 with my How To below. If you still ned to downgrade … read my How To below. Thanks … Joe

Sometimes even I regret blindly upgrading an Apple application without doing any research. This was the case installing the iTunes 11 upgrade. Lots of pretty eye candy … but the loss of many features. Ones that many people use every day.

You may have your own reason for wanting to downgrade, but rest assured, the procedure outlined after the break, worked 100% for me. So it should work for you. The operative word here is … should.

It took much looking to piece this together. I’m posting it here just for reference. Make sure you have a backup of your data before proceeding. Then use the most recent TimeMachine backup BEFORE your iTunes 11 install.

One other thing … if you are downgrading to iTunes 10.7 because Apple removed a feature you used, or for whatever reason you downgraded … let Apple know! Go to the Apple iTunes Feedback Page and leave feedback about why you downgraded. If enough people register their reasons why, and what features they’d like back in future iTunes versions … Apple has been know to bend to the will of the people and return features. So when you’re done … come back here, click on the link, and make your voice heard. And now back to our regularly scheduled downgrade …

The following instructions are for Mac users only.

How To Downgrade iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7:

Please make sure your computer is backed up.
Caution … proceed at your own risk.

Easy Method

Before starting, quit all open applications. Close all Finder windows. Disconnect any iPods, iPhones, iPads connected to your computer. It just makes life easier.

You will need your computer’s user account password.

This method might have more steps, but does not require a previous backup of your iTunes folder or use of Terminal.

Read through the instruction AT LEAST once, to familiarize yourself with what’s needed, before starting.

Here we go …

1) Download Pacifist here.

2) Open Pacifist_3.0.10.dmg file.

3) Drag Pacifist application to your desktop or to your Applications folder.

4) Download iTunes 10.7 Mac if you need it, here.

5) Launch Pacifist from your Applications folder.

Pacifist is a shareware utility. You can use it for free, or pay $20.00. If you use it for free, you will have to wait 15 seconds before you can use it each time it’s launched.

Once open you will see this window:

6) Drag and drop the iTunes 10.7.dmg file onto the main Pacifist window.

When you do this you will see the window change and say “Drop a package, archive, or disk image file here.

This window should open:

7) Click on the “Not Authorized” lock icon. Enter your computer account user password.

8) Select the first line in the list, “Contents of iTunes 10.7.dmg” and click the Install arrow icon.

9) Check “Use Administrator Privileges” then click the “Install” button.

At this point file processing will happen, then you will get a number of dialogs popping up telling you “A file already exists” or something similar. For each dialog, check “Don’t ask again …” and always click the “Replace” button. Do this for every dialog that pops up through the remainder of the install.

10) Quit Pacifist when the install is complete.

11) Open your iTunes Music Folder.

If you never moved your iTunes folder it’s located here:

Your HD/Your User/Music/iTunes

Or go to the Finder type: Command + Shift + G

Paste this into the the dialog: ~/Music/iTunes

If you moved it to another hard drive, you will know where to locate your iTunes folder.

12) Open the “Previous iTunes Libraries” folder.

13) Find the most recent copy of the “iTunes Library 2012-xx-xx.itl” file.

Normally it will the last file at the bottom of the list.

14) Holding down the Option key, drag a copy of the file into the iTunes folder. Or hit Command + D to duplicate that file and drag the COPY to the iTunes folder.

15) Delete the “iTunes Library” file.

16) Change the name of the “iTunes Library 2012-xx-xx.itl” to ”iTunes Library” with no .itl extension.

17) Launch iTunes 10.7 by clicking on the iTunes icon in your dock, or however you normally launch iTunes.

If you launch iTunes and your music library is empty. Don’t freak out!

Quit iTunes 10.7

Go back to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. (step 11)

Add .itl extension back to the iTunes Library file you had previously removed it from.

Launch iTunes 10.7 again. Voilà … your music should be back.

{ At some point in time Apple changed how iTunes wrote the iTunes Library file to your iTunes folder. Early versions used no file extension. But at some point Apple changed that and started using the iTunes Library.itl as the default written library file. If you installed your version of iTunes or your Mac came with iTunes installed before this change … your library file remained extensionless and that’s why you needed to remove the extension. If your iTunes version and install was after this change, your iTunes folder requires iTunes Library.itl. Okay …TMI?    }

After you do the downgrade the iTunes icon in your dock may still look like the iTunes 11 icon. Not to worry. It will change to the (blue & black) iTunes 10.7 icon after the first time being launched.

That’s it. All should be right with your digital world.

You should now be able to do all the things you need, including syncing your iDevices, without the nasty iTunes -42408 error many people have been getting before this method.

Enjoy iTunes 10.7 … again!

How To Downgrade iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7:

Please make sure your computer is backed up.
Caution … proceed at your own risk.

Original Method (Pre-Pacifist)

This method will require a TimeMachine backup, and the use of terminal, or you knowing where these folders are located.

1) Open Terminal and run:

sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app

This will delete the iTunes 11 application.

2) If your Music Library is in its default place, also in the terminal:

open ~/Music/iTunes

3) Using Time Machine restore the following files:

Album Artwork <– Folder

iTunes Library

iTunes Library Extras.itdb

iTunes Library Genius.itdb

iTunes Library.xml

iTunes Library.itl

iTunes Music Library.xml

Previous iTunes Libraries <– Folder

No need to replace your iTunes Music Folder.

You may not need to replace all these files but it can’t hurt.

4) Back in the terminal:

open /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks

Use Time Machine again to restore the following files:

AirTrafficHost.framework

CoreFP.framework

DeviceLink.framework

iTunesAccess.framework

MobileDevice.framework

5) Download iTunes 10.7

http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg

6) Install iTunes 10.7.

I rebooted for good measure, but it’s probably not necessary.

You may be prompted the first time you start up iTunes 10.7 for your password. Enter it. You should now be able to do all the things you need, including syncing your iDevices, without the nasty iTunes -42408 error many people have been getting before this method.

Enjoy iTunes 10.7 … again!

In a previous post about How To: Create IMAP Mail Account on iPhone account on the iPhone, I made reference to this ingenious little iPhone app called Pastebot.

Pastebot is a powerful clipboard manager by Tapbots that stores text & images copied from your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad (compatible though not universal yet.). You can organize, apply filters to, and copy clippings to be pasted or sent to other apps, or even to your Mac.

Have you ever gone to a website on your iPhone and it was the type of site that would read much better on a full screen? Or maybe the site is Flash based? With Pastebot and a few “touches” you can paste that long ungodly URL directly to your Mac’s browser. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used this little utility already.

Pastebot, the “little utility that could”, and does, is only $3.99 on the iTunes App Store. Combine that with the free Pastebot Sync from the Tapbots website and you have a very handy and useful combo. On the iPhone, Pastebot will keep track of every item you cut or copy. It will automatically save 99 items in its “clipboard”. You can name and file any of those items into folders for later use. I have copied all my eMail signatures into a folder in Pastebot, and now I can easily copy any of those back to the iPhone clipboard to paste into eMail I compose on the iPhone.

Saw a site on your iPhone you’d like to see on your Mac? Use Pastebot Sync to be able to paste that URL directly from you iPhone into the Safari URL field. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done that. Want to quickly paste a snippet from a document on your iPhone to a document on your Mac? It’s so easy.

And now that iOS 4 has multitasking, it’s easier than ever to switch back and forth from Pastebot and any other application. On my iPhone this has been one of my most used apps. It’s become indispensable.

A few days ago I had the most bizarre thing happen. I was working on my computer, a MacBook Pro 15″ 2.53 HHz Intel Core Duo Uni-body and an attached Apple 24″ LED Cinema Display. I was in the middle of something, when the image on the screen split in half. The left half of the screen was on the right and the right half on the left. For a split second (no pun intended) I freaked! Then my brain immediately went into troubleshooting mode. After I tried a few things in the Display System Preference, I just decided to restart. That fixed the issue. And I thought nothing more about it.

Now a day later … Thursday June 12th … I was again working on my computer, when the whole 24″ display went black! No warning. No dying wheeze. Nothing. Blackness. Wow … the screen went to sleep? No. The MacBook Pro screen was NOT black. Panic time!

I reached deeply into my troubleshooting repertoire and tried everything within my powers to resuscitate it … but it was DEAD JIM! I tried zapping the PRAM (holding the “Command”, “Option”, “P” and “R” keys while restarting) 4 to 5 times. Nothing. I searched the Apple Support site and Apple Discussions. Some similar issues, but not results, other than replacement. I tried starting up from one of my multi-partitioned external USB drives which have clean installs of both OS 10.5 and OS 10.6. No go. Still blackness. I reached into the depths of my Library folder and trashed the Users/xxxxx/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.xxxxx.plist and did a restart. Still nothingness.

It was time to admit the problem. My 16 month old, our of warranty, no AppleCare extended warranty, 24″ LED Cinema Display was gone. History! After about 10 minutes of shock, anger, and grieving, I went online to the website of the Seattle University Village Apple Store and made an appointment with a Genius.

Fast forward to my appointment. The Genius hooks up the display to his MacBook …. and … nothing! Black! He tells me it’s out of warranty and that it will cost $600.00 to replace the LCD panel. Though he will wave the $160.00 per hour labor fee. WTF!!!! More Shock (anger) and not much awe! I grabbed my display and went home. I WAS PISSED!!!!!!!

After only 16 month of use on a $899.00 display, and that’s it? I expected much more. Oh … like a replacement, and an apology? This isn’t the Apple I knew and loved. I was angry and depressed. After dinner that night, I cleared my desk, and reorganized it to work without the 24″ display. I was ready to move on.

Friday morning I woke up and was pretty much resigned to my fate. Not having enough money to repair or replace the display, I had to make due without it. So I started my morning ritual. Start the MacBook Pro & check mail. Wouldn’t you know …. a survey from Apple. “How did we do?” Oh boy … I get to unload! Of course there were the rate-us-questions. Fail! Fail! Fail! And finally, do you have any comments? With razor tongue I was ready to slice, dice and julienne! But then I had a “What Would Chris Do” moment. Chris being my partner, and the more business savvy person in this relationship. I heard him say, “…leave the anger and emotion behind. Give the facts. And don’t berate.” So I composed a letter.

In the letter I spoke of my disappointment that Apple didn’t stand behind a product that was only 16 months old. I spoke of how I had been purchasing and using Mac computers since 1986 and expected longevity in all their products. I stated that I was Mac consultant and would now have to think twice before recommending Apple displays without the caveat of buying AppleCare on all Apple products, because they don’t last as long as they once did. I also commented that I would have thought Apple would have replaced the display without even a second thought. That was the Apple I knew and loved.

At the end of the survey, I was asked if I would like someone from Apple to call. So I left my number etc. And sure enough … I got a call from Kelii Moreau, the Senior Manager of the University Village Apple Store just a few hours later. He told me that he read my eMail and I was right. Apple should have replaced my display. And if I stopped in later today, they would! It was music to my ears! I was told to box up my old one, and ask for a manager when I entered the store. A brand new fully (1 year) warrantied display would be waiting for me to swap for my old one.

After finishing my morning errands, I was at the Apple store with my defective and boxed display. I asked for a manager, handed the greeter the eMail from Kelli … to eliminate repeated explanation. Within a minute I was greeted by a salesperson and he went off to retrieve my new display. The entire team had already been briefed. Another manager Jennifer Dance came out to greet me and thank me for my letter. She said (and I paraphrase) ” you are a bit of a celebrity here. Everyone on the team got to read your letter. It reminded us all of what Apple has been and what we need to strive to be. You made an impression! And you did it without getting angry. Thanks you for that too.” Really? Wow! Cool! Thank you!

And that was that. I got my display replaced and went home to set it up.

Thank you Apple. And thanks to all the Apple managers and staff at the University Village Apple Store, for stepping up, and doing the right thing.

The moral of this story …. be the squeaky wheel! Use all the avenues available to obtain what you think is a fair result. No anger. No animus. Just honesty and fact. Leave hyperbole home. You may end up getting more than you bargained for.

Thanks again to everyone at Apple who helped achieve this result!

A: YOU CAN’T!

Update: Since writing this post, newer versions of iOS have been released that will allow you to create folders on an iOS device. Here’s a new post on “How To: Create A Folder in iPhone Mail“

It’s another mystery of life. Why in the world can’t you create a folder in the iPhone Mail app!!?? You can move an eMail message, or a group of messages from one folder to another, but you can’t create a Mail folder on the iPhone. It’s just another of the glaring oddities of the iPhone.

I can understand not being able to do this with a POP account, because iPhone Mail doesn’t sync the mail messages themselves via iTunes. So it would follow, you couldn’t sync newly created folders with moved messages from the iPhone.

One would think though, it could be done with an IMAP eMail account. But it’s just not so.

It’s an enigma wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a burrito …

My only suggestion to all offended and incredulous iPhone user, is to make your voice heard with Apple. Go to the Apple Support Forum and suggest they add folder creation ability there. You can also contact Apple directly and give them iPhone Feedback. Be polite and to the point. Ranting might make you feel good, but anything past “WTF” might be ignored by readers. You can get more folders with honey … if that’s what you’re looking for. Leave a comment here if you care to.

I’ve seen Google send so many people to my blog looking for an answer to this question, I figured I owed it to those folks to give a quick and probably unsatisfying answer.

Even with its flaws, the iPhone is still my only phone. Don’t think I would want to use another.

The magic “Jesus Tablet” has come to mere mortals. And it’s name is iPad! Like Manna from Steve Jobs and company, it has been delivered unto us this holy day Wednesday, January 27th 2010. Steve came from the mount @ 1 Infinite Loop and presided over his flock from a singular leather chair, stage left of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, San Francisco. The “reality distortion field” is strong with this one. I could only imagine the excitement of the yet unanointed.

With so many rumors flying, no one knew what to expect. Would Steve start with something innocuous, the new iPhone OS (which didn’t happen) or a new iPhone (which also didn’t happen) and then at the last moment …. oh … just one more thing. No. He launched straight away into setting up and introducing the new iPad.

There will be those that will rip it apart for what it doesn’t do. No phone. No Camera. No Verizon. No multitasking. But as a consultant, I need to talk about what it does do. And the possibilities it brings. Oh. And the joy!

Hello iPad: Let’s start with the obvious. It looks like a large iPhone. But it’s not. You can’t make a call from it even with the Wi-Fi and 3G package (unless you have Wi-Fi & use Skype … but that’s just theoretical … I digress). Looking at the icons on the front screen, it looks very much like an “exploded” or “expanded view of the iPhone desktop. Only four icons across, and four in the dock. If more will fit in the dock, will remain to be seen when the first Wi-Fi versions of the iPad ship in 60 days. Though 60 days from today Wednesday January 27, 2010 is Sunday, March 28, 2010. So maybe the 29th? Guess we’ll have to wait for the official date from Apple. Who knows what version of the OS it will finally ship with … iPhone/iPad OS 4.0?

Apple Inside: Apple has taken a bold step in it’s evolution with the iPad. It runs a new 1 Ghz Apple A4 processor. Apple’s chip also includes onboard video processing. No Intel inside. No Qualcomm inside. No NVIDIA inside either. Apple bought P.A. Semi back in 2008. It’s the first time they have used their own silicon in an Apple device.

eBooks: We wanted them. We got them! Plus a new iPad application called iBooks. Like iTunes you can buy eBooks directly from Apple via iBooks. The interface is simple, slick, and well designed. There have been other iPhone books apps that have looked similar, but Apple is not one to shy away from “quoting” another programmers work & calling it their own.

Apple announced partnerships with five major publishing houses, including Penguin, Macmillan, and Simon & Shuster. With more to come. All books on the iPad will be in ePub format, which is the most used open book format in the world. So in theory, any ePub book can be read on the iPad. iBooks is going to be yet another cash cow for Apple … and the publishers. Look out Kindle and Nook.

Mail: Mail on iPad has been redesigned. It’s use of popup contextual menus is well designed. The virtual touch keyboard for composing new eMail looks almost like a real keyboard. It seems that big too. Turning the iPad in landscape gives you a screen with your Inbox and folders on the left. select a piece of mail and flip iPad to portrait, and the inbox goes away and you eMail fills the screen. Sadly I can’t tell you much more than what I’ve gleaned from photos and the iPad Video on the Apple website.

iPod: Dream alert! Imagine if you will, an iPad landscape car dock. Now imagine if you will the ability to use iPad with my car stereo. I could use iPod.app for the first time in iPod history, to see album images on the screen large enough, that I could use as my music interface for my car. In landscape, I would imagine, iPad’s version of iPod.app uses cover stream. No more searching on a single line of text on my “iPod compatible” car stereo for songs buried deep within a playlist somewhere. I may have to build this thing myself if I have to!

It will also be nice to see what iPad developers do with the new screen real estate … all 9.7 diagonal inches. Plus the new iPhone SDK that will give them access to all the new menuing and other iPad specific features. It will be another summer of exciting new iPhone and iPad apps! As of now all current iPhone apps will run on the iPad AS IS. No updating needed. Plus you can run the current iPhone apps in “double” pixel” mode, which makes then fill the entire screen. Pretty thoughtful on Apple’s part!

I could go on about each redesign of each app, but Apple.com has done it best. Whether it’s Safari, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Maps … they all have been redesigned … and they look and function great.

Now I can’t wait to get my hands on one to test for myself. Apple did a great job of making the entry level 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad only $499.00. I’m like a kid waiting for early Christmas! Oh gee …. is it 60 days yet???!!!

It seems I’ve helped dozens of clients trying to set up IMAP mail on their iPhone. So I’ve finally decided to document this in a “How To” post. For those of you who’s ISPs do not support IMAP mail, at some point in the future I may do the same thing for POP setup. For those ready to tackle this … read on.

There are some quirks involved with setting up IMAP mail on the iPhone. Especially for those ISPs or mail providers who don’t support SSL (secure sockets layer). The default for iPhone is to create any account with SSL on. Some of the biggest confusion for first time users is how long it takes SSL to be negotiated the first time the IMAP account is set up, especially if your are doing it over Edge or 3G and not a Wi-Fi connection. But even with Wi-Fi the wait can seem like an eternity! And all the confusing error dialogs that are popped up for you to act upon. Hopefully I’ve documented all those situations.

Things you will need:
> Your iPhone
> A working eMail account set up with your hosting company.
> Your eMail account settings written down.
> Patients.

So here we go ….

1. Select “Settings”.

2. Select “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”.

3. Select “Add Account…”.

4. Select “Other”.

5. Select “Add Mail Account”.

6. Fill in account info & save.

TIP: With most eMail providers, your username will always be your FULL eMail address, unless otherwise noted.

7. Fill in all eMail account information.

Select the IMAP tab.

Here’s where the “tricky bits” start.

Be certain to enter all information correctly.

Be sure the Host Name for both Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) and Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) do not contain the “@” symbol and instead use a period “.” as in: imap.yourdomain.com or smtp.yourdomain.com.

Once all information entry is complete select the Save button.

Now wait for iPhone Mail to negotiate your IMAP and SMTP settings with the mail server, depending on the network connection speed … this may take a while.

If your mail provider does not do SLS you will get two error dialogs. One for IMAP and one for SMTP. PLEASE WAIT FOR EACH. No matter how long they take. See steps 8 and 9.

If your mail provider does do SLS, you will get no errors. Unless you’ve typing errors. Move to step 10.

8. Error 1: IMAP SSL Certificate error. Press Continue.

9. Error 2: SMTP SSL Certificate error. Press Continue.

10. Your completed IMAP account.

Now there is a new IMAP account on your iPhone. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Depending on your situation there are a few steps that you may or may not need to do. Those will be covered in the next few sections. We will need to also check that the IMAP folders are correctly associated with the iPhone folders for Drafts Mailbox, Sent Mailbox, and Deleted Mailbox.

If your mail provider does not support SSL follow from step 11.

If your mail provider (gMail) does support SSL jump to step 15.

11. Select your new account.

12. Scroll and select Advanced.

13. Set Use SSL to OFF. Go back one screen.

14. Scroll and select Drafts Mailbox.

15. Select your new SMTP server.

16. Set Use SLS to OFF. Go back one screen.

17. Select Drafts Mailbox.

18. Select your Drafts folder on the server. Go back one screen.

19. Select Sent Mailbox.

20. Select your Sent folder on the server. Go back one screen.

21. Select Deleted Mailbox.

22. Select your Trash or Deleted Items folder on the server. Go back one screen.

When matching up folders on the server, your folder names may not be the same as my folders … but I think you’ll know which are which. There are only a few other items you can set. But I won’t go into great detail. You can select how long to hold onto deleted items. On my Mac, I empty the Deleted Items when I quit Mail.app. On the iPhone I have mine set for 1 day. This way I don’t end up with thousands of eMails taking up space in the Trash on the server. One other issue you may face. If when you launch iPhone Mail and you don’t see your folder hierarchy you may need to go to the Advanced settings of your account (on your iPhone) and in the field for “IMAP Path Prefix” enter the word INBOX in caps. That should allow you to see all your folders.

Other than that … you’re done! Press the physical Home button on your iPhone and launch iPhone Mail. That’s it.

Finally. As of iOS 4 you can only have one signature for your iPhone Mail, even if you have several eMail accounts. Hopefully Apple will address this in s future release. But until then, there are some great utilities out there that can get you through. Two of my faves are Pastebot from Tapbots LLC & TextExpander Touch from Smile on My Mac. I may do posts on some of these at a later date.

For now …. go send some mail from your iPhone! Have fun!
