I attended No Excuses Summit last year. I’m sure you heard about it. More than 20+ of the industry’s “top dogs” got together for 2.5 days to spill the beans on how they got so successful. This year, No Excuses Summit 2 looks like it will be even better.

Everything from prospecting, to sales funnels, to “shenanigans” as David Schwind’s and Jim Yaghi’s set included. I learned many tips and strategies at the first NES. One tip, coming from Mark Hoverson, comes to mind as one of the most easy to implement.

Mark shared some gold nuggets on email marketing. He said sending an email should be very informal. It should be thought of in the same line as texting. Your email subject lines shouldn’t be perfect. For example they don’t have to have capital letters and they shouldn’t sound like you’re pitching a product or something. He revealed his all-time best subject line. Here it is:

“staying in the loop”

That simple line has caused more email opens than any other subject lines Mark has used. Why? Because of “the loop”. People like to stay “in the loop”. It automatically attracts them to open the email because they think if they don’t open it, then they’ll be missing out on some important information.

Another effective subject line Mark shared was incredibly simple. Here it is:

“yo”

That is it. Just one word — “yo”. One word and it’s not capitalized. It’s effective because it’s not “salesy” and it peaks interest.

When a person gets all kinds of email subject lines that are very long and very “pitchy”, after a while people get numb to the marketing. But when a person comes across “yo” in their inbox, it stands out and it peaks their interest.

I didn’t know that the peak performance coach and author, Tony Robbins, even had a son. Wow! What a surprise. Tony’s son, Jairek Robbins, spoke at No Excuses Summit and he was one of the most memorable speakers. He taught on the importance of celebrating. When we are children, we celebrate everything. Even the little things. But when we become adults we don’t celebrate as much.

When we were young children, we celebrated when we learned our ABCs, our 123s, and even when we did well on a test. But when we get older - celebrating accomplishments don’t happen as often. It seems only when something big is accomplished like buying a new home or getting a promotion. Jairek taught, at No Excuses Summit, that we need to celebrate more often as that makes life worth living.

Perhaps one of the most important components of Internet marketing is electronic mail. A form of direct marketing that makes use of email to communicate commercial messages directly to consumers, email marketing is one of the most popular ways by which companies can reach their target audiences directly.

This form of marketing can be interpreted in many different ways. It can mean sending messages to enhance an already established relationship between business and patron in order to encourage loyalty and continued transactions. It can also be used to acquire new customers or persuade consumers to purchase a product immediately.

Aside from this, email marketing can be used to forward advertisements from other companies to a new set of consumers. Regardless of how it is used, marketing via email has plenty to offer online businesses. The fact that over half of Internet users check or send email everyday is enough to boost the popularity of this form of marketing, as advertisers now have the opportunity to reach a significant number of email users who have chosen to subscribe to their offers.

Another noteworthy advantage of email marketing is that its return on investment can be tracked to an exact amount - and when done correctly, the ROI is definitely worth the advertising dollars being thrown at it.

Analyzing the figures

This powerhouse online marketing strategy is so effective researchers estimate that in the US alone, companies spent over US $400 million in email marketing in 2006 - and it is still growing.

The Email Benchmarking Report for the first half of 2010 showed that email volumes grew 50% from the previous year, while in the UK, marketing firms sent out an average 1.7 billion emails a month from January to June of 2010.

The report also noted the importance of that number, saying that 1.7 billion emails can be translated to 1.7 billion opportunities for the audience to engage with their brand, creating 270 million interactions and about 78 million click-through - all in the span of a month.

The figures are staggering - and all offer a view of email as one of the most cost-effective ways of marketing products and services.

This is also one of the main draws of email marketing. To put it simply - it is cheap - one of the cheapest forms of marketing in fact, that can generate the best results for your dollar.

If for example, the cost per thousand emails sent can be pegged at around $15-$30, then the average cost per click generated by the email activity amounts to a mere matter of nickels and cents - definitely the cheapest way to market your company and create brand awareness.

Needless to say companies have been paying attention and is using email marketing to their advantage in order to create a name for themselves and pump life into their business.

Writing effective e-mail marketing campaigns for your online network marketing business is really not that hard. The most important thing to remember in e-mail marketing is that the more content you write the better your prospects will trust you. This is why I teach all of my students to never write an e-mail that could be thought of as spam. You need to focus on producing 90% valuable content and 10% pitching your opportunities. Many successful online marketers put three URLs to their offers throughout their e-mail. This is a good strategy to use because you can test (through proper tracking) how and where people are clicking on your links in your e-mail message.

It is very important to track all of your marketing online where possible because if you do not know where your traffic is coming from then you are simply blind. I love using e-mail marketing as my back end marketing strategy to recruit people into my network marketing business. I have found that when I write content that solves a problem in my prospects life I build trust and am able to get people to call me wanting to join my business. The reason for this is not so much that they are sold immediately on my opportunity but because they want to work with a leader. This is the mindset that you need to develop when writing your e-mails. You need to see yourself as a LEADER no matter what your skillset level is.

This strategy works for any network marketing company and will leverage the time you spend prospecting for your online network marketing business.

For a newbie just starting out in online network marketing it’s difficult to not feel overwhelmed by seeing all of the ’so called’ gurus telling you that you need this particular product or that you need to be learning this. The way to overcome this is thru AUTHENTICITY. You need to be real with people in your email marketing campaigns. The way you do this is by speaking in stories. Have you ever heard this saying before in one of your network marketing trainings that FACTS TELL and STORIES SELL? This statement is so true in business.

For a newbie (just beginning) to find success they need to build a level of trust with their prospects. You do not need to put up a front or say that you’re some ‘Guru’ when you are really not. All you need to do is let people into your life. Share a story with them of HOW your business is fun and exciting and invite people to connect with you. You can also share a story about how you helped someone in business or in life and let them actually feel your passion for helping others.

I like to tell NEWBIES that they actually have a competitive advantage over the super successful. This competitive advantage is having the time to get to know their prospects on a more personal basis. A NEWBIE has time to prove their VALUE by spending more time on the phone or in person with their prospects. The super successful people simply do not have the time to follow up with everyone. This is WHY they immediately plug people into ONLINE SYSTEMS that do the follow up for them.

They also charge huge amounts of money for private coaching.

Now don’t get me wrong, this is where YOU should desire to be at in your online network business if you want the big bucks. You want people to VALUE you and your time. But in the beginning of your business you have the luxury of building great relationships and friendships that will pay you dividends down the road in your business. This is where EMAIL MARKETING comes in and is so powerful!

Focus on building your list and then stay in constant contact with your list. You will begin to see your results soar by doing this. Email marketing for the network marketer is FOLLOW-UP on autopilot.

Choosing the right email marketing tools is just as critical to the long term success of your business as your choice of web hosting and internet service provider. Ideally the tools that you choose to utilize should not only help you connect with your prospects and customers more effectively, but they should also help to maximize the efficiency and impact of those interactions. Ultimately, having the right set of tools at your disposal can lead your business to greater levels of productivity, while increasing the overall profitability at the same time.

There are a few primary functions that the tools in your email marketing arsenal should perform. The first and probably most obvious is the role of relationship management. This would include the mechanism by which subscribers are added to your marketing list, the automation of the follow up process and the management of the subscriber database. The primary purpose of these types of email marketing tools are automation and efficiency. By freeing up the time and energy that would otherwise be spent in managing the contact list, the business owner can now concentrate those efforts on improving the effectiveness of the interactions with the list subscribers. Things to consider when evaluating these types of tools would include lead capture options, auto responder functionality and ease of database management.

Personal branding is the next piece of functionality that a business owner should evaluate when considering which tools and providers to utilize. Ideally every piece of email correspondence that a business sends out should reinforce the brand identity of that business. An effective system will include email marketing tools that allow for repetitive personal branding. Some of the features that you may want to consider are customizable lead capture forms and pages. Many service providers also have customizable HTML templates for outgoing broadcasts and correspondence. Another consideration is the ability to incorporate social media linking to your broadcasts. Each of these things can be instrumental in creating a powerfully unique personal brand for your business.

Finally there are tools that track the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. First and foremost in this set of functional capabilities is the ability to monitor the response of your subscribers to the marketing efforts that you are sending to them. At the very least these tracking mechanisms should track such things as opens, bounces and unsubscribe requests. Ideally, the best email marketing tools will go far beyond those bare minimums by tracking the clicks on each particular link and identifying the subscribers who clicked on those links. This functionality should also give insight into the number of times a particular individual has opened both the original email and followed the links contained within.

To simplify this process there are now a number of exceptional email service providers who have bundled multiple functional capabilities into their online email marketing platforms. For a small monthly subscription fee, the service provider offers the email marketing tools mentioned above plus additional business building resources. The automation and efficiency that these services offer to the business owner are well worth the cost of the monthly investment.

I know what you’re thinking. What is the point of email marketing when all it does is end up in someone’s Spam folder? Surely spam has effectively killed off email as a marketing vehicle.

And anyway, aren’t people using other methods to find out about products? Twitter, Facebook and the like has overtaken email. Surely it has had its day.

Well, just stop and ask yourself why businesses spend so much time and money sending out all these emails in the first place. Is it because they enjoy nothing better than filling your trash folders? No. They engage in email marketing purely and simply because it works.

A recent econsultancy survey has shown that 72% of businesses that responded said that the return on investment (ROI) from email was excellent or good. In 2010 the Direct Marketing Association were reporting that for every dollar spent worldwide on email marketing they expected a return of over $42. Now, that is what we call a good return!

Email marketing still outperforms all other forms of direct marketing, including catalogues, and offers real advantages to businesses large or small.

Principal among these is its relatively low cost. Designing, producing and initiating email campaigns takes far less time, money and resources than any kind of paper-based alternative such as direct mailing or print advertising.

But that’s only starters. Targeted email marketing has a global reach no matter where you are, and your products will be reaching people even when you are out of the office. 24/7 access to your customers anywhere in the world.

Another attractive aspect of this marketing method is that it is targeted through customised address lists and can be focussed even more by including an opt-in/unsubscribe option, meaning you reach only those who are genuinely interested in your products and services.

While direct mailings might expect a response time of 7-10 days, with email marketing those responding usually do so within in three days, the majority on day one.

Add up all these advantages and it comes as no surprise that in 2010 70% of businesses surveyed in the US and UK said that of all the marketing options available targeted email campaigns would be receiving the biggest boost in funding.

Alongside a host of other support services, email marketing can help database integration, segmentation, strengthening of customer relationships and generate quicker responses and improved sales. What’s not to like?

A lot of people will say “I don’t just know what to write in some kind of a newsletter.” I would tell you that if you find it hard to write a newsletter, stop thinking about writing a newsletter. How about just writing a letter to a friend with news in it? That sounds a lot easier doesn’t it? We can all write letters to friends.

The Easiest Way To Approach Writing a Newsletter

Most of the times when we’re writing letters to friends, we always tell them what’s new, so let’s take that approach instead of trying to write a “formal” newsletter. If you don’t have a format that you normally use, you can copy this one and then you can massage it one way or the other as you see fit over time to fit your style.

You’re going to have a topic introduction and you’re going to write some kind of an article on that topic and it should be actionable content, not just relevant content. In other words, if you’re going to bother to write to somebody, you need to have in mind what the next step is for them to take. You always need to give people the next step to take because if you don’t give them the next step to take, they may take the wrong step. So gently lead people to the next step.

After you have your topic introduction and your actionable content article, make a resource recommendation for a product of yours or someone else’s. You may want to include a free gift, people always like that. And then you can sign off and then in your P.S. or before you sign off your name, there’s three things that you can do.

What To Include In Every Newsletter

The first thing is you tell them to take action now. That’s the most important thing. Help people understand that to get where they want to go, they have to take action. So anything you can do to help them get up and get moving, you want to do in every communication that you do. Remember, this is actionable content.

Tell them to click the link. Tell them to go to the website. Tell them to listen to you on a teleconference. Tell them to go to a live conference.

The second thing is to remind them about something in the past. Maybe you spoke of something a week ago and you remind them - “you remember I mentioned the XYZ last week? Well the deadline for that is coming up soon and if you haven’t taken the time to take a look or if you want to take another look before it expires, here’s the link one more time.” So that’s just simply reminding people.

Third, give a preview hint of what’s coming up next. Kind of the old cliffhanger or like at night on TV they’ll give a little teaser on the news of something happening and they leave it up in the air and they’ll say news at 11. So create cliffhangers. Create curiosity, you want to get them in the habit of opening up the email to see what in the world is he going to be talking about this time.

Do’s

1. Ask for Permission

Email is the most influential and yet the most risky means of communications. Without permission you not just risk losing customer goodwill, you could also end up being blacklisted by ISPs that decline every mail coming from your domain if spamming objections have been made against you.

Permission is not complicated to get. Present something of value in return for the customer giving consent to accept your e-mail and, often, to give helpful personal information.

2. Make a Targeted Mailing List

The best approach to get permission is to have your top customers request their friends to sign up. It creates a self-screened record of prospects that are possibly attracted to your offer.

3. Use Clean, Permission-Based Database

You should use the cleanest permission-based record you can get that is targeted to your business as well as your offer. Several organizations have this information in CRM, SFA, and contact management databases.

4. Take up the Approach of Determination

Successful email marketing begins with a base and utilizes the email to drip the story, to have it slowly open up. That base needs an entrance plan to welcome fresh prospects and set up hopes for the rapport.

The three initial emails are the most essential. First must include a preliminary message in which customers acknowledge an invitation and give consent for upcoming interactions. Second email sets up customers’ hopes by explaining potential advantages. Third email should start to deliver on their hopes by mailing the promised offering.

Don’ts

· Many individuals think that a long promotional news letter with lots of information is more useful as compare to those with small message content. However, you must resist the temptation to write lengthy emails because it works against you. Lengthy newsletter is among the main blunders that a number of Internet marketers make.

· Do not forget to include the benefits before the characteristics of the product or service that you are promoting. The majority of customers are not concerned about the potential of your product but rather how it can resolves their problems.

· Present your advertising message in clear, easy and simple to understand language. Do not apply any technical terminology as well as fanciful marketing expressions regardless of how attractive it might seem.

· If you have several key points to mention, send more than one newsletters. Restrict every email to a single message, and each message is more likely to be considered and acted upon by the receiver.

Video brings motion and emotion to your customer email marketing. It can change the way a customer interacts with you and how they feel.

When you do video marketing right, customers can’t help but notice you!

So lets talk about customer emotion in relation to email marketing, we need to talk about the three things that happen when they feel something. It starts with what they physically do (sit, watch, click, ), what they focus on and did the message we use mean something. Emotion comes from motion, so what we do physically affects our actions. Our feelings are tied to our movement…so if you want to change the state of your customers emotion, get them to physically do something different. Get them to Engage?

Also maybe we should question our email marketing focus. Frequently, we work ourselves into a tizzy because we are focused on what we think is the customer outcome. If you want to break out of a pattern, concentrate on something different. Change the marketing focus and you will change your attitude towards your customer marketing. While, you are at it, why not change the way you are thinking too. Usually, we ask poor marketing questions (even in our thoughts) and we get bad results. Improve your questions and you will improve the state of mind you approach any marketing campaign. Improve your marketing message or language and you will improve your customers state of mind as well. It is all about marketing discipline. Lao-Tzu said, “Don’t think you can attain total awareness and whole enlightenment without proper discipline and practice.

Email marketing has churned out millions of pieces of HTML based “marketing messages”. The purpose is for your customer to read and click. Why not change your focus to video in email marketing, where the purpose is to get your customer to watch, smile, laugh, nod, cry, rewind, interact, click.

When we think “video marketing” do you think that by simply posting a video to YouTube, for example, that it will go viral. Ask yourself the question “Is that target marketing?” Why not decide to target your video for use it in existing marketing efforts including email marketing. This could generate targeted exposure which, if your video is shared, appear on social networks as well.

Change is discipline, the once powerful marketing channel of e-mail is experiencing growing pains. Consumers are finding e-mail messages less relevant and experiencing e-mail fatigue.

Video can evoke emotion, video gives e-mail a “human touch.” Everyone wants marketing to be more personal. With video marketing we are not talking about different types of marketing, we are talking about using video as a different channel to physically engage a customer (sit, watch, smile, nod, laugh, cry, click). What it all boils down to is “customer engagement.”

As a web marketer, you should be aware of the fact that about 70% of visitors to your site do not make online purchasing decisions instantly. You need to follow up with your prospective buyers for a fairly long time through a series of emails, ezines, videos, podcasts, etc. before you can expect to consummate a sale. You can imagine very well that when the number of your prospective buyers cross over 5000, it becomes extremely difficult to respond your prospects on an individual basis. Here comes AWeber, the savior autoresponder.

AWeber is gaining popularity as an autoresponder. It takes up the repetitive task of interacting with your long list of prospects. With AWeber, you can set up email campaigns for the prospective buyers. Under such an email campaign, you can not only write the text of your mail, but also set the date and time when these mails would be sent. If you are not confident enough about your writing and designing skills, you can get 150 professionally built, well-designed HTML templates. You can customize these templates to suit your needs.

The learning curve for using this tool is low. You get an effective video tutorial for setting up your system and troubleshooting tips. The manufacturer also offers 24×7 support. The manufacturers also claim to offer more than 99.34% reliability in fast email delivery. AWeber is over 8 years’ old and you can bank upon its manufacturer’s tech support, marketing tips and ideas.

Let us now list the benefits that AWeber, the autoresponder has to offer:

Unlimited and sequential auto-response

Unlimited personalized follow up messages

Unlimited message length

Pre-designed templates

Unlimited broadcast newsletters, with broadcast facility on segment basis

Easy web form generator with pop-up generation facilities

Personalization features based on name, date etc. with up to 25 custom fields

Reporting facility with graphical account statistics.

Free, unlimited customer support

Some important features of AWeber

The most conspicuous feature is the tool’s personalization capability. You can achieve a good degree of personalization by addressing your subscribers by their first names. You can also employ the “{! geog_country} feature. It allows you to customize your campaign based on the specific country where the subscriber resides.

Moreover, after you have sent mails are you sure that the mails would be opened by the prospects? If there is no mechanism to track the effectiveness of your email campaign, you may not get your full night’s sleep. AWeber offers you an email tracking mechanism called the open rate. The rate shows you the percentage of mails opened vis-à-vis the total number of mails sent by AWeber.

Lastly, you will need to insert an opt-in link box within your mails. Opt-in links allow readers to click a link to accept some offers or to download some free goodies. The “Web Forms” tab within AWeber allows you to design an effective opt-in box.

Is free email marketing software something you should be considering for your business? To answer this question it is important to clarify what is meant by the term “free.” There are really two classifications of software that utilize this terminology. The first is software that has no monthly costs associated with the product and the second is a service that has no associated costs for a trial period, typically thirty days.

For many marketers who are just starting out online, the desire to save money can often be the primary motivation behind their systems decisions. This is often what leads people to sign up for free email marketing software that has no ongoing monthly costs. Although this may sound attractive at first, there are some things that need to be understood about using this type of arrangement. For starters most companies offering a free service place advertising on the outgoing emails sent by their users. Since they are not charging a monthly usage fee, their expenses are covered through the placement of paid advertisements on all outgoing emails. These services also have limitations on the functionality of the free account. For example, a company may limit a free account to having no more than 500 email recipients. Anything above that number incurs an ongoing monthly fee or requires the migration to a paid service. Another limitation often found on these types services is the number of online email marketing pieces that can be sent on a monthly basis. Aside from these drawbacks there are other functionality limitations in areas of design, tracking and split testing.

The other common arrangement for free email marketing software is a trial offer of the software. In this type of arrangement the full functionality of the software is unlocked for the end user, so they can effectively evaluate the performance and capabilities of the program. Typically the only limitations are on the number of allowed marketing list subscribers and on the total number of emails that can be sent during the trial period. Unlike the arrangement mentioned above, trial period software contains no third party advertising. All functionalities of the system are available for testing and the overall performance of the software can be effectively measured.

While it might at first seem like a good idea to save money, it is imperative that anyone serious about building their business through online email marketing take a long term perspective. With the traffic generation tools available to a marketer today, the ability to grow a mailing list of over 500 people in a short period of time is well within reach. Having to go back and move that mailing list to another service at a later time is not only a hassle, but it creates an opportunity to lose a large number of subscribers, simply because they do not opt-in to the new email marketing service. In the long run, the headaches caused by using this type of free email marketing software may become more costly than any monetary savings that may have been realized.

It is a much more prudent strategy to utilize a free email marketing software as a test drive for a paid service. The paid service will offer much greater functionality to their clients and will also have greater flexibility for tailoring email campaigns to the needs of the business that is being promoted. The best use of this trial period is to learn the functionality of the system, so that it is being fully maximized once the account moves from a free trial to paid subscription status.

Free email marketing software is a great tool for gaining familiarity with a paid marketing platform; however, it is not recommended that it be used as the primary tool for an email marketing strategy.
