Martha Stewart's Everyday Food email gets a fresh design

Pretty much all of Martha Stewart's emails follow the same design setup, which is of course good for staying on brand.
But recently I started paying a lot more interest when the design of the Everyday Food email was updated. It grabbed my attention. It made me interested.
They've added the trendy 3D page curl effect that's so fashionable at the moment and they've generated interactivity by encouraging users to watch the video of the recipe being made. This is in contrast to the previous email where you had to click through to get the recipe (the recipe is actually in the email on the new one).

Browns flashy animated flapper dress

Browns is a designer fashion store over here selling high end brands like Fendi, Philip Lim and Dolce & Gabbana. As we know, when you're selling a more expensive product, the customer will want a lot more persuasion to buy, which can be more challenging when you purchase something online. I really love how they've promoted this flapper dress. Subject line: Discover Lanvin’s roaring ‘20s flapper. When you open the mail, the dress is an animated gif, showing off the movement that the flapper dress gives. It instantly draws you in whereas I might have just overlooked this before as just another dress. It makes it stand out and shows why this dress is different from all the others.
Click here to view the email with animated gif

For the love of unsubscribe...

I've been doing a fair amount of unsubscribes for emails I'm no longer interested in and I've noticed how challenging it can be just to stop receiving a newsletter? Why do companies make it such a challenge? If a person is no longer interested then it means they're of little use to you and you're going to end on bad terms if you make it too hard. Most bad examples make the link too small, try and hide it in a block of text, or don't use the word unsubscribe in the link text. The latter is semantics, make people understand what's going to happen if they click. Click here is so old school. Generic calls to action should be used next to products to get people to shop. E.g. Buy Now, Shop Now. Not for unsubscribing.
Excellent unsubscribe link example
Ok example:
Bad example
To stop receiving emails from us, click here
Let's run through the picture examples I've attached to this post:
Bad unsubscribe examples
Bliss (blue background) - bad wording, hard to see (haven't formatted link to another colour so it stands out more)
Bloom - the whole thing's a sliced image which they've resized and the wording is impossible to read
Hamleys - the wording is good but the link doesn't actually click through to anywhere
Hollister - too small and not enough contrast and to top it off, when I click through to unsubscribe my email address isn't even filled in! You sent me the email, you know it. Make it work properly.
Good unsubscibe examples
Maybelline - link text uses word unsubscribe, but should include "click here" in the link text
River Island - 2 links to unsubscribe, semantic wording used. Excellent contrast, not surrounded by text so easy to unsubscribe.

Thanks to Nikki Parker for sending this, and to my boss who showed me it in Outlook as I couldn't work out what was wrong when I viewed it in gmail!
Looks like Boden made a vey rare cock-up with this email. The email came through with just a cloud on when viewed in Outlook as it doesn't support animated gifs. When viewed in other email clients it's fine and it plays out to an offer for 25% off some of their clothing. When clients don't support animated gifs they show the first frame of the gif so you need to put the offer in the first frame to make sure that everyone receives the key message. Sure that's going to ruin the surprise for a lot of people but it's still better than some people not getting the message at all.
Looks also like they forgot to put display:block on the images too - check out that huge gap in the gmail version.
View the full animated online version here

Why you shouldn't use background images

I got this email last week and had completely forgotten about it until I rediscovered it in my starred messages. But I had to show you.
This is a good example of why you should never use background images and why you should actually check that they work in your client.
This Ebuyer email arrived into Google Mail and at first I thought the images hadn't loaded properly as they appeared to be cut off at the bottom. When I right clicked it said "view background image". I scoffed. Surely not? But I proceeded and sure enough, there was full image. As we know, background images aren't supported in Outlook so I thought I'd send it over to my work email and see what it looked like. Yes, it was blankety blank, blankety blank. In fairness, it mostly lays out fine but I just feel there's a lot lost without visual aids for the products you're trying to promote.
Lessons to learn: If you want to use non-block colour in your emails and you have writing on the top, you're just going to have to embed the text within the image. You can use alt tags and format them when images aren't displayed (works in MOST browsers)
Otherwise, use block colour. For example, at the top of the email, where the intro is, a background colour could have been set which would have worked perfectly fine.

Spotted this email from Origins a couple of days ago and thought I should show you!
Seems to be becoming a bit of a trend this images off stuff, but I do wonder if the general public appreciate it as much as the email marketers among us.

Report: Email preferences and segmentation

I know a few of you have been following my tweets about my excitement for doing work with email preferences. We don’t have any fancy software to work these things out - I wrote the algorithm to work out the preferences myself based on percentages of their total orders. The preferences were split into departments although we merged some together because there’s quite a few.

We only sent to those who had purchased three or more items in the past year and out of those we had a control group of 20% who were sent a random selection of products from across all the departments. They both received the same subject line to keep it fair.

The email is split into three sections

Intro: 2 product slots

Section 1: 6 product slots

Section 2: 6 product slots

Each section has two products per row. The last two products in sections 1 and 2 were random.

Gender segmentation

If a customer was female or had “no gender” (i.e. their title was gender indeterminate) they received a female product in intro slot 1. If male, a male product was shown. As a majority of customers are female, it was right to prioritise for women when gender was unspecified.

If they were marked as buying opposite gender clothing (e.g. bought clothes for their partners) then they were shown an opposite gender product in intro slot 2, otherwise they got a same gender product.

If their gender was female or no gender, then section 1 would show female products. If male, then section 1 would show male products.

If their gender was female or no gender, then section 2 would show male products. If male, then section 2 would show female products.

Showing preferences

Based on what departments a customer had purchased from as a % of total products purchased, customers were presented with a choice from that department. E.g. If they had bought 100% dresses then the customer was show only dresses. If 50% shoes, 50% dresses they were shown 3 of each.

If they had also bought opposite gender products then those section 2 preferences would be customised, otherwise they were shown a random selection of products.

Results after 24 hours

Non percentage based results are based on multiplying the control group by a factor of 4.

Clicks: 0.4% higher with preferences
Order conversions: 0.9% higher following click to the site with preferences

Revenue: 23% higher with preferences
No. of conversions: 21% higher with preferences

I’m really happy with these results - it’s been my baby, my magnum opus for the past week. I barely looked up from laptop that week, staying up into the early hours to get the algorithm right. And the ESP we use has shocking dynamic content setup, it took me nearly a whole day to loads preferences. Thank god it paid off though, because otherwise it would mean I’d have only used this algorithm once and now it looks like I’ll be able to use it again in the future for more emails!

I'm massively into Wanelo at the moment - my interest waned fairly quickly with Pinterest and Wanelo sends me interesting emails. Now I don't normally read them over that much but this particular email from last week caught my eye and there were several different items I wanted to look at from the email. The problem was they all had the same link and that link didn't take you to any product, just to the homepage. So I had to manually try and find all the products I liked to find out about them.
Luckily this seems to be a one off (previous emails had working individual item links) but I don't seem to have had an email from them since the 9th and I haven't unsubscribed either. Very mysterious....

What happens when you're in too much of a hurry? Yes, mistakes happen. It looks like they really rushed this email because some many things were overlooked.
Firstly, none of the images loaded on this email.
Then I spotted a typo in the copy. SLIVER? It's meant to be silver, is no-one checking this?
And finally, perhaps a little anally if I say so myself but only realised because none of the images loaded, it says "SHOT NOW" on the call to action button instead of "SHOP NOW".
All in all, quite a biggie on the mistake front...

I've had two emails from JJB in the past 9 days, both of them are broken in my email client. I could almost excuse one looking wrong, but two?
I've inspected the code and they haven't put display:block on the images or even put the images in separate table rows. All of the parts are separated by line breaks!
Seriously shoddy coding...

At the weekend we decorated our house, and it looked shite. This is because Mr Email fail has taken it upon himself to put tinsel over anything that remained stationery for longer that 10 seconds.
So this week I'm on the look out for beautiful decorations. And Zara Home came up trumps with this email. The problem is the hero message isn't a link. It's just a picture. I have to choose from the menu options to take me somewhere. I mean, even if the hero message was just a link to the homepage (if they don't have one specific christmas category that is) then at least it'd be getting me onto the site.

I've been cutting down on the number of emails I've been getting recently. As I no longer work on beauty brands they tend to be the ones getting a cull.
This is one from Decleor that I've tried to unsubscribe from produced a bit of a weird result. I clicked unsubscribe from the email and for the briefest of seconds I caught a page title which says I've been unsubscribed before redirecting and presenting me with a "page not found".
I assume that I have been unsbscribed but there's no official confirmation on a page that says I have...

I purchased from Homebase about a year ago but never opted in to their emails - it's not like I buy stuff very often and when I do I'd just go into the shop for some screws or such.
Someone had obviously been mucking around with their auto emails as I received this on Friday. Note that the from name is "Daily Feed Back Option = No". Looks like they messed up the coding or something was awry in the data they fed in.
A day later I got the apology email saying they messed up....

I spotted this email from Radley a couple of days ago for Christmas gifting and noticed the bottom parts which allow you to shop different types of gifting. They've got the usual shop by price range links but they've also put in a "shop by colour" piece above it. I wonder how popular this would be? I can almosy certainly say I have never shopped for something for someone based on its colour. And why would you put this above the considerably more popular "shop by price range" section?
