With all the talk of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, business owners think that by simply setting up their profiles on these site is the magic pill to bring them wealth and success. It ain’t gonna happen.

Just like there is no magic weight-loss pill, there is no such thing as “set it & forget it” when it comes to marketing on these sites. When trying to lose weight, you need to work at it, pay attention to what you are doing every day and understand the consequences of your actions – whether good or bad. This same principle can be applied to marketing yourself on Facebook and Twitter.

Once your profiles are set up in an aesthetically pleasing manner (that is a post for another time), and with some strategic thought (should you make your Twitter profile your name or your business name? Should your Facebook Page be a Fan Page or simply your own personal page?), you need to have a plan to check in with it often and update the content on a very regular basis. These sites are a reflection on you as a professional, so you should treat it as such.

So although it seems that you can simply set it up and let it work on its own while you go reap the benefits at the beach, you are still required to participate actively. In coming posts I will shed light on how to participate and make these sites work for you.

Call me old fashioned, or hokey, but I love holiday cards. Both sending and receiving. In the hustle and bustle of the holidays it is a nice tradition to sit and write – or read – a hand written greeting from a friend. And I appreciate this same sentiment when I receive a card from a business too.

In fact, holiday cards is what got me interested in marketing several years ago. A Realtor friend of mine sent me a hand addressed, hand written Christmas Card. I thought to myself, “how does she possibly have the time to sit and write out her Christmas cards? She must really care about me!” Well, whether she cared or not, I can’t be sure, but my perception that she took the time to connect with me during the holiday meant a lot. In fact, we ended up hiring her as our Realtor a few months after that. Her time investment paid off quite a bit!
So, although I am a big proponent of online marketing and sending emails to connect with customers, during this time of year, I truly believe in taking the time to put pen to paper and taking part in an old fashioned tradition…your customers will forever appreciate it.
