There are certain places on Maui that become part of your life long before you realize it. Tobi’s Poke & Shave Ice is one of those places for me.

Growing up in Kīhei, countless afternoons were spent playing tennis, tee ball, soccer, and every other youth sport imaginable on the oceanfront courts and fields surrounding Kalama Park. The games were fun, but if I’m being honest, there was usually something else on my mind by the final inning or whistle. Across the street sat Tobi’s Shave Ice. On hot South Maui afternoons, nothing sounded better than cooling off with a towering shave ice after running around in the sun for hours. For many local kids growing up in Kīhei, Tobi’s was part of our childhood.

Fast forward a few decades and that humble shave ice stand has evolved into something much bigger. While the original Kīhei location remains a local favorite, Tobi’s Poke & Shave Ice in Pāʻia has become one of the most popular lunch destinations on the North Shore. Equal parts poke shop, plate lunch spot, and shave ice stand, it has earned a reputation as a must-visit stop for anyone who appreciates fresh fish and local grinds.

Why Tobi’s Poke & Shave Ice Works

One of the things I love most about Tobi’s is that it doesn’t try too hard. In an era where restaurants are constantly chasing trends, Tobi’s focuses on doing a handful of things exceptionally well. Fresh fish. Local flavors. Friendly service. Consistency.

Located right in the heart of Pāʻia Town, it sits in the perfect position for just about any North Shore adventure. Maybe you’re coming back from an early morning surf and turtle safari at Ho‘okipa. Perhaps you’re exploring the shops and galleries around town. Or maybe you’re fueling up before or after tackling the Road to Hāna. Now let’s get something out of the way. Maui is blessed with great poke. Really great poke. Some of the best in the world…

You can find excellent poke in grocery stores, fish markets, restaurants, and hidden local spots all over the island. That’s why I hesitate to crown any one place as the undisputed champion. But if a friend asks me where they absolutely need to try poke on Maui, Tobi’s is always part of that conversation.

What separates their poke from many others is the restraint.

The fish remains the focus. Too often poke gets buried beneath heavy sauces and toppings until the quality of the ahi becomes secondary. At Tobi’s, the freshness shines through. The seasonings complement rather than overpower. Every bite tastes clean, balanced, and exactly how fresh island fish should taste.

Whether you’re ordering my favorite, which is their classic Hawaiian-style preparation, or leaning into something with a little more spice, the foundation remains the same: quality fish handled with care.

My recommendation overall? Order a poke plate.

The combination of fresh ahi, rice, local greens, crispy wontons, and house-made sauces creates one of the most satisfying lunches you’ll find on Maui. It’s the kind of meal that somehow feels both indulgent and healthy at the same time. Something I find myself craving long after I’ve left Pāʻia.

Don’t Sleep on the Rest of Tobi’s Menu

As much as I love the poke, limiting yourself to only poke at Tobi’s would be a mistake.

One of the reasons this place has become such a North Shore institution is that it works for everyone in the car. Not every member of the family wants raw fish. Not every visitor is looking for the same thing. Tobi’s solves that problem beautifully.

The menu stretches well beyond poke with local-style plate lunches, kalua pork, shoyu chicken, sandwiches, burgers, breakfast offerings, açaí bowls, and plenty more.

I’m especially fond of places that allow a table to order family-style. Grab a poke plate, add a few sides, maybe split a sandwich or two, and suddenly lunch becomes an experience rather than just a quick meal. Sampling different dishes has always been one of my favorite ways to enjoy Maui’s food scene.

After all, why choose one thing when you can try several?

Save Room for Shave Ice

It would feel wrong to write an entire article about Tobi’s without mentioning the shave ice that started it all. Gavin and Sienna especially would wonder, what’s going on?!

Even with poke now stealing much of the spotlight, the shave ice remains excellent. On a hot North Shore afternoon, there are few better ways to finish a meal. The ice is soft, the syrups are flavorful, and the combinations seem endless.

For me, there’s also a nostalgic element that makes it taste even better.

Every bowl takes me back to those afternoons in Kīhei. Back to dusty tennis shoes and sunburned foreheads. Counting down the points and ticking the outs until the match ended so we could run across the street for a frozen treat. Maui has changed a lot since then, but some things still have a way of transporting you back in time.

Good shave ice is one of them.

Tobi’s is Worth Building a North Shore Day Around

One of my favorite things about writing these “best of” articles is recommending places that genuinely enhance a Maui experience. Tobi’s falls squarely into that category.

This isn’t simply somewhere to grab lunch because you’re hungry. It’s the type of place that can become the anchor for an entire North Shore day. Start with a surf check at Ho‘okipa. Wander through Pāʻia Town. Explore Baldwin Beach. Head toward Hāna. Then pull into Tobi’s and enjoy some of the freshest poke on the island.

No, I’m not saying it’s the definitive best poke on Maui. That’s a debate we’ll probably still be having years from now.

What I am saying is this: if you love poke, Tobi’s belongs on your list.

Welcome back to your monthly Maui Real Estate Update for April 2026. Maui’s housing market showed signs of slowing in April, with single-family home sales declining 30% compared to April 2025 to 49 transactions, while the median price held within recent ranges at $1,290,000 (-26% YoY). In contrast, the condo segment saw a modest increase in activity, with 70 sales (+13% YoY), though pricing remained adjusted at $651,250 (-32% YoY). While closed sales reflect prior months, a noticeable slowdown in new escrows during April signals a shift in near-term demand. As the market moves into the summer months, rising mortgage rates, broader geopolitical uncertainty, along with factors such as weather patterns and fluctuations in tourism throughout March and April, will all play a role in shaping overall market performance.

April 2026 Maui Real Estate Update by Region

As you can see on the map above, both activity and prices were down nearly across the board on Maui in April 2026. Some of the most notable drops were for single-family homes is our traditionally local residential markets in Central Maui, on the North Shore, and Upcountry. All three of these regions saw total sales drop by over 40%. If we remove one outlier sale in Pukalani, then all three of these regions also saw a decrease in median sales price. In fact the median sales price in Haiku dropped below $1 million for the first time in years!

Highlighting South Maui and West Maui

Let’s take a closer look at the island’s resort areas. In a continuation with last months numbers, new listings were down nearly across the board (the exception being single-family homes in West Maui). And check out what now appears to be a trend within the residential market in South Maui: total sales were continued to eclipse the new listings, a reversal of February 2026 when there were 20 new listings and 9 total sales. As I mention in our last report, this ratio would put this sector back squarely in the seller’s market realm, an interesting development indeed. The condo market in South Maui and West Maui has appeared to begin to stabilize a bit after the precipitous plummet following the proposal of Bill 9 nearly 2 years ago. Both those subsectors tallied 128 median days on market .

April 2026 Maui Residential Update

Single-family home activity slowed in April, with 49 total sales (-30% YoY), reflecting reduced transaction volume across several regions. The median price of $1,290,000 (-26% YoY) remained within the broader range of recent months, though influenced by the luxury segment which had no closings above $5 million during the month. Regionally, South Maui continued to account for a significant share of activity (39% of total sales), while other areas experienced softer activity, contributing to the overall decline. The combination of lower volume and rising days on market points to a more selective
buyer pool.

April 2026 Maui Condominium Update

The condo market showed modest improvement in activity during April, with 70 sales (+13% YoY), though pricing remained under pressure, with the median price at $651,250 (-32% YoY). Median days on market increased to 132 days, reflecting a slower pace as buyers take more time to evaluate options. While renewed demand remains present, the segment continues to be price-sensitive, with activity concentrated among well-positioned and competitively priced units.

Single-family sales climbed to 76 transactions (+55% year over year), the highest level since October 2022 and a notable increase from last month, while the median price held at $1,203,250 (-7% YoY), remaining within recent ranges. The condo market also improved, with 74 sales (+21% YoY), though pricing reflects continued adjustment as the market moves into the spring cycle.

March 2026 Maui Real Estate Update by Region

Looking island-wide and we can see that nearly every region saw increased sales compared to the same time last year. Homes in Kihei, Haiku and Wailuku rebounded rather robustly, with each region posting over 100% gains in total sales. Conversely, median sales price continued its steady decline for much of the island, with the only exceptions being homes in Central Maui and condos in West Maui.

The median price declined to $675,000 (-18% YoY), indicating ongoing pricing adjustments, while median days on market edged up to 118 days (+3% YoY), suggesting a steady but measured pace of buyer activity. While demand has improved, the segment remains price-sensitive, with buyers responding to opportunities as inventory and pricing continue to align with current market conditions.

State leaders estimate total damages from both storms could exceed $1 billion, and Gov. Josh Green requested a major disaster declaration from President Donald Trump to unlock additional federal resources for long-term recovery. As neighbors, whether you live here full-time or you’re visiting and love Hawaiʻi, we’ve all been watching one thing unfold in real time. People showing up for each other. That spirit is powerful, but the work ahead is still big. This post is meant to be a practical, community-first guide to where help is needed most right now, and which trusted organizations are actively doing the work on the ground.
