Did you ever experienced hard times trying to get your hand crafted Wordpress website transferred from your local test environment to the destination server? Did you spend countless hours trying to make things work? If you can answer yes to these questions then this article is for you. I’ll explain in plain English how to make a smooth transition from you localhost to the destination server.
Before we begin, I need to make some assumptions:

You have your website working perfectly on your local machine.
Local environment is either a PC or Mac on which you run a web server with PHP and a MySQL database and you have access to phpMyAdmin.
Destination server runs Apache or IIS, you have FTP details, access to phpMyAdmin, database server name, database name, database user name & password.
Other configurations may work as well.
It doesn’t matter which version of Wordpress you are using.

Also, a quick “executive summary” of all the steps below:

Export your local Wordpress database to a text file.
Search and replace http://localhost/yoursite with http://www.yoursite.com
Create a database on your destination server and import your database.
Copy all files from your local machine to destination server and amend wp-config.php file with new database details.
If necessary change file and folders permissions so Wordpress will be able to use them.

Step 1 – Export Local Database To Text File

Open up your browser and access phpMyAdmin and select your website database from the drop down box on the left. This may look like this:

Go to Export section (click on the Export tab at the top). Depend on your version of the phpMyAdmin this section may look bit different but the functionality will be the same.
Click ‘Select All’ in the Export form. All tables should be selected now. Leave other options as they are. Navigate to the bottom and tick ‘Save as file’ checkbox. Click ‘Go’.

File save dialog will appear. Click OK and save that SQL file on your computer. Step 1 completed. Get yourself a coffee.

Step 2 – Search & Replace

Now, we have to change your database export file and find & replace all URLs that contain http://localhost/yoursite with http://www.yoursite.com
I’m using Dreamweaver but you can use any text editor to do the same.

We have to change another line as well. Find line C:\\Program Files\\xampp\\htdocs\\yoursite/wp-content/uploads and strip it down to /wp-content/uploads and finally save your SQL file.

Step 3 – Import Information Into Destination Server Database

On your destination server you have to create database for your WP installation. It may look like this screen below (assuming you’ll be using phpMyAdmin) However in most cases you’ll have to log onto your server administration panel and create database, user and password from there. It varies from provider to provider so please refer to your hosting provider help section.

Now as you have your database created you should populate it with your data. Click on the Import tab at the top of the page. Click on Browse in the ‘File to import’ section and select your amended SQL file. Click Go to proceed.

If everything went well you should see table names on the left hand side and a message saying something similar to this: ‘Import has been successfully finished, 162 queries executed.’ You’re done and deserve another coffee.

Step 4 – Upload Wordpress Files

In this step you should use your favourite FTP client to upload all files to your destination server. If you created a brand new website than you can upload everything including index.php file. If you upgrading an existing website then you have to make sure that it will work until you launch your WP website. DON’T DELETE ANY FILES that belongs to your existing website. Make sure your Wordpress website works first, then you’re safe to delete the old files.
To make your website work you should update wp-config.php file with your database details: database name, database server address, database user and password. Once done, you should be able to see your new website at http://www.yoursite.com/
Now, you have to test if you can login to the administration panel. So type in http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/ to find out. If you can see WP admin login screen you’re half way there. Type in your login details and login. If you’re successfull you should see WP Dashboard.
That’s it. You’re done.

Step 5 – Fine Tuning your Wordpress website

Few other thing you should take care of:

Make sure that you can upload any new images or documents. If you can’t it means that you have to change files/folders permissions and give Wordpress read/write right for necessary folders.
Check if your permalink structure works. Amend if necessary.
Make sure you’re running the latest version of Wordpress and upgrade automatically to the newest one where possible.
Check if you have installed latest versions of any plugins that you’re using. Be careful though! Some plugins require PHP5 to work properly or require additional libraries to be enabled. Check this prior to any upgrades.

Please uninstall any audio drivers and Microsoft UAA (kb888111) - if it's installed....

step 2:
this will open device manager
Click Start > Run... > type devmgmt.msc > press Enter
On Device Manager, please uninstall (right click > select Uninstall) a PCI device marked as unknown (e.g. with a '!' or maybe Yellow question mark)
then Restart your laptop.

step 3:
After your laptop restarted,
Windows will ask you to install automatically the drivers for Microsoft UAA Bus.
Cancel it and install this kb888111 - Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio (Download for XP SP2)
Restart your laptop

step 4:
After laptop restart
windows will once more ask you to install automatically the drivers for Microsoft UAA Bus.

You probably have a Facebook profile, but does your band, business or client have a Facebook Page? Pages are a great way to connect with fans and consumers, and we're going to show you how to customize and maximize your FB Page.

Social networking king Facebook is one of the most visited websites in the world. It has over 500 million active users with 50% logging in daily, and users spend over 700 billion minutes per month using the service. While you and most of your friends and family have a Facebook profile, Facebook Pages - whether for a business, organization, band, group, cause, or celebrity – are something entirely different. Pages can help in marketing and awareness, as well as customer and fan communication.
Your Facebook Page can serve as a website where you can display your business or organization details and keep customers or fans up-to-date with happenings, new products, and other news. When Facebook users “Like” your Page, they’ll see your posts in their News Feed, plus their friends will be notified in their News Feed that you “Like” a specific Page. Given that the average user has 130 friends, the potential exposure and buzz is something to be desired, for sure.

Since Facebook Pages are visible to the public even without a Facebook account and are indexed in search engines, you might even consider creating a Facebook Page over making a traditional website if you don’t already have one.
If you haven’t created a Facebook Page yet, visit www.Facebook.com and click the “Create a Page” link. You’ll need to link it to a personal Facebook Profile. If you don’t have one yet, it will let you create one. Then in the future to make edits to your Page, you first login to your personal Facebook Profile. Then you can click the Account menu and select Use Facebook as Page. You can also assign others as administrators of the Page, which would similarly link it to their personal profile.
Customizing your Facebook Page can help enhance the user experience and improve marketing. First, you should fill in your Basic Information which is shown to users on your Info tab.

Then we’ll start by customizing your website address (URL) and adding photos. Then we’ll discover some applications (apps) that can help you add custom content.
We’ll also see how to add custom tabs to your Page from scratch, so you can display generic HTML and other web content. This used to be made possible by using Static FBML apps, but that method was removed in March 2011 and replaced by using iFrames.

2. Creating a Username and Adding Photos
You probably have a Facebook profile, but does your band, business or client have a Facebook Page? Pages are a great way to connect with fans and consumers, and we're going to show you how to customize and maximize your FB Page.
So your customers and fans can more easily reach your Facebook Page by manually typing in the website address, you should create a username. This shortens and simplifies your Facebook website address, such as www.facebook.com/yourusername instead of www.facebook.com/pages/yourname/178946324913. It also makes it more visually appealing when displayed on advertisements.

Unlike with personal Facebook profiles, not all Facebook Pages can have a username. However, the only requirement is that you must have at least 25 people that “Like” your Page. Then you can create your username by visiting www.facebook.com/username/. If you’re just starting your Page and want a custom URL right away, you could setup a sub-domain pointing to your long Page URL if you have your own website and domain.

You can make your Facebook Page more visually appealing by adding photos or images. Your profile picture is one way. While it’s best to keep the width at or just above 180 pixels, the height can be much larger. You can create a rectangular graphic (a tower ad of sorts) and then you can choose the section to serve as your thumbnail that’s displayed along your comments and wall postings. You may want to work your logo or other identifiable mark into the graphic so it can appear in your thumbnail.

Customizing the 5 most recent photos shown on the top of your Page (when users view your Wall or Info tabs) is another way to add some visually appealing content. Even if you don’t have photos of events or people you’d like to upload, consider adding something that deals with your organization, even if it’s only stock photos.

If you have more than five photos uploaded, you can choose which five are shown on top when viewing the Wall or Info tabs by deleting them and re-adding them each time you upload more photos. That way they’ll always be the most recent, thus shown on the top. You can also control which are shown by hiding them: click the X on the photo when editing your page.

3. Apps to Add Custom Content
You probably have a Facebook profile, but does your band, business or client have a Facebook Page? Pages are a great way to connect with fans and consumers, and we're going to show you how to customize and maximize your FB Page.
Here are a few apps that create new tabs on your Page and let you display custom content:

Extended Info: Though you can’t create custom fields or content on your Info tab, you can on another tab with this app. Make up whatever fields and content you want: more details about your products, services, organization, etc. It even supports videos, images, music, and HTML. There are many other ways to display custom content like this (such as using iframes like we’ll discuss soon), but this method makes the process quick and easy if you like the formatting.

Add Google Map: This offers more than just displaying a customized Google map of your location. You can also share your contact information, including phone, fax, email, website, and address. Though these details can be displayed on your Info tab, this tab (named Contact by default) is more noticeable to users wanting to contact you or find your business’ location. You can also display a contact form for users to email you, and display an icon with links to your other social network profiles.

Poll: You can create questions with public polls. It can help increase Page activity and interaction. Get feedback, opinions, or even do market research. It even lets you download the results in a spreadsheet, which includes the user ID, name, date/time, gender, and selected option.

4. Apps to Add Social Features
You probably have a Facebook profile, but does your band, business or client have a Facebook Page? Pages are a great way to connect with fans and consumers, and we're going to show you how to customize and maximize your FB Page.
Here are a few apps that create new tabs on your Page and are social oriented:

Social RSS: Lists content from the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds you choose. If you aren’t familiar with RSS, it’s a method used by many websites and blogs to distribute updates, news, and other content via a universal format. You can specify RSS feed addresses and their content will be displayed with applicable dates/times and links. You might use this to share your blog posts or news stories from your favorite sources. Facebook users can also subscribe to your feeds so they’ll see new content posted to their Wall, thus also visible and shared with their friends.

Tweets for Pages: Shows the tweets from the Twitter account you specify. Since only the name is required, this can be any Twitter account. It displays the basic info (Name, Location, URL, etc) and the amount of recent tweets you specify. This is a great way to let Facebook users and your fans know about your tweeting. Users can also hover over a tweet, click Publish, and then post it to their Wall to share it with their friends.

Reviews: Anyone (whether they “Like” you or not) can leave their comments and a starred rating about your products, services, etc. You and others can “Like” and comment on each review. This is a great way to receive testimonials and feedback.

5. Create Custom Tabs with iFrame Apps
You probably have a Facebook profile, but does your band, business or client have a Facebook Page? Pages are a great way to connect with fans and consumers, and we're going to show you how to customize and maximize your FB Page.
Here are two apps that help you create custom tabs using iframes, similar to the old Static FBML method:

Hosted iFrame: This lets you add a custom tab to your Page by inserting your own HTML, XFBML, and other web coding. It’s free for Pages with 5,000 or less fans. It’s similar to the old Static FBML method but with several useful enhancements. It’s a quick, easy, and enhanced alternative to creating your own iframe tabs from scratch, as we’ll discuss on the next page.

You can define different content to be displayed to fans (likers) versus non-fans (non-likers), and even content to be displayed to both. It even provides up to 35MB of hosted storage for photos and files. It also supports Google Analytics so you can track visitors.

You can add up to five Host iFrame tabs to your page. However, it affects the amount of fans used to determine the cost. For instance, if you add two tabs you must have 2,500 or less fans for it to be free or 1,666 or less fans if you add three tabs.

IFrame Apps: This is similar to Hosted iFrame, but let’s you display any webpage on the Internet by specifying a URL - much like the from-scratch iframe method we’ll discuss - but makes the process much more quicker and easier. It also lets you enter HTML code into the app, but it doesn’t provide hosting of images like with Hosted iFrame. You can designate fan and non-fan content, but can’t define content to be displayed to all. Additionally, it only allows you to add up to two tabs instead of five like Host iFrame does.

6. Create Custom Tabs from Scratch
You probably have a Facebook profile, but does your band, business or client have a Facebook Page? Pages are a great way to connect with fans and consumers, and we're going to show you how to customize and maximize your FB Page.
If you require even more customization than what’s provided by the iFrame apps discussed on the previous page, you can create a custom tab from scratch. It lets you point to and display any webpage on the Internet by specifying its URL, so this is best if you already have your own website or hosting server. It’s similar to iFrame Apps, but you can choose the tab icon displayed on your Page. While this method actually involves creating a Facebook app, it doesn’t require any coding or programming experience beyond the same basic HTML understanding required when working with the iFrame apps.

First, add the Facebook Developers app to your personal Facebook account (or one that’s assigned as an administer to your Page) and click the Set Up New App button to get started. If you haven’t already, you’ll have to perform an account verification using your mobile phone or credit card.

Here are the chief app settings you need to define, organized by the setting tabs:

    Canvas Page: enter a page name to be used for your Facebook URL.

    Canvas URL: enter the URL that Facebook will pull in your iFrame content. In other words, this should point to a webpage on your separate website (http://www.yourdomain.com/facebook/) that you want displayed on your custom tab of your Page. Keep in mind this can’t point to a main domain, it must point to a directory. Thus you’ll have to have an index webpage uploaded to the directory.

    Secure Canvas URL: should point to the HTTPS URL (https://www.yourdomain.com/facebook/) of the same page. If you don’t have your own SSL certificate, you may be able to use the one from your website host (https:// yourdomain.yourwebhost.com/facebook/).

    Tab Name: enter what you want should as the name of the tab in the left column on your Page.

    Tab URL: enter the same as you did for the Canvas URL.

    Secure Tab URL: enter the same as you did for the Secure Canvas URL.

To add the app (custom tab) to your Page, visit the My Apps page of your developer account, click the Application Profile Page link, and then click the Add to My Page link from the left column.

7. There’s More Ways to Customize

Now you should have a more customized and interactive Facebook Page, or at the very least the knowledge to create one at some point in the future. We discussed how to increase a Page’s visual appeal with your profile photo and the five most recent photos shown on the top of your Page. We also discovered several different apps to add additional content. Lastly we showed you out how to create custom tabs using apps and by creating your own app.
Remember, you can change the name of most tabs you add to your Page. Go to your Page’s settings, click Apps, and then click the Edit Settings link for app/tab you want to change.
You should think about making a welcome page by creating a custom iFrame tab to get more visitors to “Like” you. You can select a tab that visitors see when first entering your Page. Thus you can prompt them to “Like” you so they can see additional content. Then you can specify different content to be display once they “Like” you, such as an introduction to you or even a coupon or special offer.
To change the default tab of your Page, go to the Manage Permissions tab of your Page settings and change the Default Landing Page.

We only touched on a few basic customization techniques for your Page. You may also want to consider using Plugins and/or Dialogs on your website or custom tabs for additional interactivity.

Remember, there are plenty of other apps out there that can help; do your own searching, too. Just keep in mind you’ll also come across apps that are for general users or to add content to personal Facebook profiles, which isn’t supported now. Look for apps specifically designed for use by Pages.

The number of Facebook applications can seem a little overwhelming at times. While Facebook doesn’t share an exact number, an independent website called AppData monitors trends for over 100,000 Facebook applications, which is a lot to sift through.
As a business, trying to determine which of those apps can help your organization can be daunting. To get you started, here are four essential Facebook apps that allow you to better reach and communicate with your audience, as well as save you time for all those other things you have to do.

1. Tweets to Pages — Display Your Twitter Feed

Tweets to Pages, which has 1.2 million monthly active users, will create a tab on your Facebook Page that displays a timeline of your company’s most recent tweets. This is a great feature for providing additional, real-time information to Facebook users who don’t have a Twitter account and for avoiding the annoyance your fans would feel if you were to constantly stream your tweets to Facebook as wall updates. 3. ContactMe — Add a Contact Form

ContactMe, with 180,000 monthly active users, adds a tab on your organization’s Facebook Page with a contact form. This allows anyone visiting your Facebook page to easily get in touch with you at the very moment when they’re most interested.
The biggest advantage of this app is its customization options. You can choose whether you’d prefer to show your company’s contact information or social media icons for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Skype. You can also adjust, add, remove, reorder and require specific fields through a simple user interface on contactme.com. DLink DSL-2640B wireless connection problem

Recently I brought a DLink DSL-2640B to replace my client faulty wireless router. When I finish configure the router modem, all the thing is working fine except it can't connect to the internet. At first I thought the password is wrong, but I check with the ISP (TMNet) that my password is correct. I already try to upload another version of firmware but it still can't solve my problem. Hmm weird, then I have no choice to bring the modem back to check.

Later at my office, i use another modem to try out my client username and password, it works. then it must be the modem problem. After I google the web, I found some setting, so I try to follow the setting stated below. Then later I can get the modem to connect to Internet. My problem is the value of my VCI is different. I put VCI = 32, so it cannot connect. After I change it to VCI=35 and other setting as below, then My wireless router can connect now. I wonder what is this VPI and VCI use for?

The setup wizard and interface is not very user friendly compare to other DLink Model modem and it didn't provide Malaysia selection for it setup wizard selection.

Below is the value for setting the modem for TMNet streamyx (Malaysia):

How to Key In Karpersky Internet Security License Key for your trial version

Recently, I help a client of my to install Karpersky Internet Security 2010. To enjoy an extra 1 month of protection using Karpersky Trial Version License key. After 30 days the license key expire, my client call me on where to key in the License key. I check on the Karpersky Interface, it is really quite hard for me to find it too. So below is how and where the location for you to key in the License key.

Step1: press the main menu to go to main control center.
Step 2: go to the right lower corner and click on the link show on the picture below.

Step 3: After clicking you will see the below image and click on " Activate the application with the commercial license"

Step 4: then you will see the space for you to key in your activation key. Click next a few times, then the Software will be activated.

D-LInk DIR-412 3G Wireless Router cannot detect My Celcom 3G Huawei E-1550 3G Modem

I just bought a D-Link DIR-412 3G Wireless Router for one of my client. He also apply a Celcom 3G package from me. I tested the free 3G modem which is Huawei E-1550 3G Modem. It work fine on my netbook. Later when I plug it into the 3G wireless router and done the setting. It cannot connect to the internet.

I try google it but no answer. So finally, I found the solution for this. Which is upgrading the wireless router to the newest firmware. Please remember to use a wired connection to do the upgrade. I upgrade the firmware from version 1.02 to version 1.08.

Step to upgrade your firmware.
(Please download the new firmware file and unzip it first)
1. Login to the D-Link DIR-412 Setup Page
2. Go to Tools
3. Go to Firmware
4. Go to Firmware upgrade and click browse and select the unzipped firmware file.
5. Click upload and wait for the process to upload.
6. Then your Huawei E-1550 will work fine.

I think the step will work for other 3G modem too. Please let me know if it do.

HP Compaq CQ35 Recovery Partition

One of my Clients Notebook HP Compaq CQ35 have the original Window 7 Home Premium pre-installed in his notebook. I check it have the Recovery partition, but I check with him, he said he didn't received any recovery CD. I also can't find any recovery instruction (any key to press to go to the recovery setup menu). After I browse the web I finally found the solution:

The solution is press the F11 key!!!

Then only it bring me to the Recovery Menu.

Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations

Information

This will allow you to restore the default registry entries and program associations for the Windows 7 file extension type of your choice.

Note

This can be helpful for example when a file extension type opens with the wrong program by default, has the wrong icon, or is missing or corrupted in the registry. Downloading the .reg file for the selected file extension in the tutorial below, will restore that file extension back to default for all of these items above.

Since there are so many default file extension types in Windows 7, it may take a bit to have a complete list of them below. If the file extension type you need to restore is not listed below yet, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to add it to the list.

Warning

You will need to be logged on to an administrator account to apply these. As a backup, you should create a restore point before applying the downloaded default file extention below. This way you can do a System Restore to go back to before you applied it if needed.

These default file extensions should only be used in Windows 7.

Here's How:

1. Click on the file extension type link listed below for the one that you wish to restore to default to download it's .zip file.

2. Save the .zip file to your desktop.

3. Open the .zip file, then extract the .reg file to the desktop.

4. Right click on the .reg file and click on Merge.

5. Click on the Run button in the Security Warning pop-up.

6. Click on Continue (UAC), Yes, and OK when prompted.

7. When done, you can delete the downloaded .zip and .reg files on the desktop if you like.

8. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply.

Default Windows 7 File Extension Types:aspx - A file with the ASPX file extension is an ASP.NET Source file.

asf - Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) is an open file format specification for streaming multimedia files containing text, graphics, sound, video, and animation. The default program is Windows Media Player.

asx - Advanced Stream Redirector (.asx) play list files, also known as Windows Media Metafiles, are text files that provide information about a file stream and its presentation. The default program is Windows Media Player.

AudioCD - Audio CD protocol associations.

avi - Audio Video Interleave files. The default program is Windows Media Player.

bat - Batch files.

bmp - Bitmap image files. The default program is Windows Photo Viewer.

cab - Cabinet files.

chm - Microsoft compiled HTML help files.

cmd - Windows command script files.

com - MS-DOS application files.

Typically, header files are included via compiler directives at the beginning (or head) of the other source file.

htm - HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language) document files. The default program is Internet Explorer.

html - HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language) document files. The default program is Internet Explorer.

ico - Icon files. The default program is Windows Photo Viewer.

img - CD or DVD image file, essentially equivalent to an ISO file.

PNG supports 16.7 million colors, it is lossless and also supports index color, grayscale, true color, transparency, and is streamable. It is thus the best compression method (better than GIF or JPEG) for use on the web.

psd - The PSD file format, created by Adobe, contains graphics/photos created by image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop.

reg - Registry files.
NOTE: You may need to set the default program as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe) for reg file extensions, or enable regedit before you will be able to use this REG file.

rtf - Rich Text document files. The default program is WordPad.

Although not specific to the technology industry, indeed.com is one of the larger job search engines with over a million available searchable positions and a large international footprint. Here too you can search salary levels to help with negotiations, from over 50 million jobs that were available within the past year.

The site also offers a robust “trends” engine, which graphs the percentage of matching postings based on your keyword searches. This can help identify which sectors and niches are growing and getting hotter, potentially helping you figure out where your chances are optimal or even giving you an idea of what new job skills you might want to pick up or freshen up as you pursue the next stage in your career.

The ACM’s Career & Job Center brings together computer industry professionals to connect with each other, from job seekers to talent seekers. More and more Malaysians are embracing the internet technology into their lives. From the very low penetration rate of 15% in 2000, the number rose exponentially to 62.8% by the end of 2008. How does this number compare to other countries? Is internet in Malaysia dominated solely by the young and educated? How much time do Malaysian users spend on the internet? And what do they do online?

On this page, you will find the answers to these questions and many more, illustrated with facts and figures from the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Looking Outward: International Comparison
1) Internet users in ASEAN countries (per 100 inhabitants)
	Among ASEAN Countries, Malaysia is one of the most promient countries as it ranks as number 2 in terms of internet penetration, with 57.80 of every 100 Malaysians being internet users. It is positioned just behind Singapore. Trailing behind at number 3 is neighboring country Brunei Darussalam, followed by Thailand, Vietnam, Phillippines, Indonesia, Lao P.D.R., Cambodia, and lastly Myanmar. The latest comparison data available is extracted from the first quarter of 2008. However, it is important to note that by the end of 2008, internet penetration in Malaysia had reached 62.8%.
2) Internet users in other measured countries (per 100 inhabitants)
	Although Malaysia is positioned at number 2 among ASEAN Countries, on a broader scope, she is still behind countries such as Japan, South Korea, USA, UK, and Taiwan. Internet penetration rate in Japan stood at 73.46%, far ahead of Malaysia. However, compared to the world penetration rate of 22.04%,However, it is noteworthy that Malaysia's penetration rate is well above the average.

By the end of 2008, 62.8% of Malaysians were internet users, up from only 15% in 2000.

This number is expected to further increase in the years to come as the High Speed Broadband project by the Malaysian government takes off in 2009. The project will end the nationwide rant about slow internet connection.

Also, considering the high penetration rate, it is astonishing that Malaysian companies spend only 0.6% on internet advertising. Why is this so? The ad spending paradox is going on here.

2) Age group (per 100 household users)

There was a substantial hike in numbers from the below 15 years old age group to the 15-19 age bracket. It seems that Malaysian teenagers mostly start using internet in upper secondary school (ninth year of formal education). The next age group seems to retain the interest to use internet. This probably results from the adoption of internet technology by Malaysian universities and other academic institutions.

3) Gender (per 100 household users)

The distribution of internet users across gender are somewhat even. 51.9% of Malaysian household internet users are male, while 48.1% of Malaysian household internet users are female.

4) Education level (per 100 household users)

35.1% of household internet users are degree holders. This is the largest group, followed by those with secondary school as their highest education (31.5%), and diploma holders (30.9%). Indeed, it seems that Malaysians pick up their interest in internet usage when they started going through secondary education. This explains the small percentage of users with primary education as their highest qualification (1.3%), and the equally small percentage of users with no education (1.3%). As the nation and its education system gradually develops, numbers of internet users are expected to rise.

5) Income level (per 100 household users)

Those in the income bracket of RM1000 - 3000 comprise the largest group of internet users. 46.1% of those using internet earns RM1000 - 3000 per year. The middle-income group make the bulk of internet users in Malaysia.

6) Location (per 100 household users)

In terms of penetration in urban/rural area, 85.30% of users live in the urban area, while the rest, 14.7% live in the rural area. This is due to better infrastructures and facilities to support online platforms in urban areas.

The highest internet penetration rate in a city can be found in Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur). It stood at 13.0% by the end of 2008.

7) Hours spent online (per 100 household users)

28% Malaysian internet users use internet for less than 4 hours per week, while 23.2% use internet for 4-8 hours per week. 193% use internet for 8-15 hours per week. The number seems to drop for users who are using the internet for 15-22 hours, and 22-28 hours. It rose again to 16% for those who use internet for 28 hours and above.

	85.1% of Malaysians are using mobile phones. In terms of mobile penetration rate, she is in the third position, only behind Singapore and Thailand.

	In the year 20007, there were 56.4% of Malaysian mobile phone users were male, while 43.6% were female. Both male and female showed a similar interest in the use of mobile phone.
3) Location (per 100 inhabitants)
	The highest mobile penetration rate can be observed in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Mobile phone penetration rate stood at 91.4% in 2007 for the capital. This is followed by Melaka and Selangor.
4) SMS
	Usage of SMS service peaked at 1713 per mobile subscriptions in 2006. The number dropped to 730 in 2007. The number remained at a low of 756 smses per subscription throughout 2008.
5) 3G subscriptions
	Malaysian 3G subscriptions grew tremendously from a mere 427 in 2006, to a whopping 4366 in 2008.
6) Type of Access (per 100 inhabitants)
	84.4% of Malaysians used GPRS to access internet via mobile phone. While 16.5% used 3G, 12.1% used WAP service, and only 1.5% used EDGE.

The Printing Presses and Publications Act of 1984 requires all publications in Malaysia to obtain licenses that can be revoked at will by the Minister for Home Affairs. The minister's decisions are final, and there are no judicial reviews available.
UMNO (Malaysia's ruling political party) and its allies in the ruling Barisan National coalition directly own or control all major newspapers, radio and television stations, making it difficult for alternative voices to be disseminated to the public.

The government halted the production of four newspapers in 1987 as they publicised criticism of its policies. As such, the Malaysian press is extremely careful when dealing with Malaysia’s multicultural foundations. To date, there are more than 80 daily and weekly newspapers in various languages such as Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil (size of segment of each newspaper language also in this order).
Though the government advocates freedom of speech and a free press, it is said to restrict the flow of information in practice. Certain issues like citizenship of race outside that of Malays and the extraordinary position of Malays in the social order are considered sensitive and citizens must refrain from discussnig about them. The media generally practices self censorship and often provides optimistic and noncritical reports of governmental activities.

Today, traditional media in Malaysia is facing a growing threat from online news platforms. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations Malaysia, the average daily newspaper circulation in the country stood at 2.5 million copies in the end of June 2008, a dip of about 40,000 copies when compared to the previous year.

How to Setup a Free Virtual Private Network (VPN) in Windows - Step by Step Guide

Virtual Private Networks, or VPN for short, allow employees to securely connect their desktop or laptop computers to the office network from any location in the world using a regular Internet connection.

If you are working from home, you can connect to the corporate network over VPN and you’ll have immediate access to your emails, internal web pages, network drives, and stuff that is otherwise only available from computers within the office premises. Some VPN clients also allow screen sharing and remote access to facilitate communication among team members.

Create a Virtual Private Network for Free

If you regular need to connect to your home computer(s) from the office or if you have a group of friends and family members with whom you share files quite frequently, you can consider setting up a virtual private network between all these computers.

While businesses generally invest in VPN solutions for companies like Cisco, we can create own VPN for free using Gbridge – this is a software only solution that is available for all versions of Windows and the best part is that it uses your Google Account for authentication.

Once you install this application*, simply sign in with your Gmail or Google Apps account. Then enter a hostname for your computer; this is what your computer will show up as to other computers that will connect to the VPN. Your hostname must be 8 characters long or less and include only letters, numbers, and/or dashes.

[*] If you are using a DNS service like OpenDNS that does automatic typo correction, you may see a notification saying that it is interfering with Gbridge. You can either add an exception for Gbridge, or simply let Gbridge automatically raise its virtual adapter’s binding order to override this.

Share Files and Folders

You’ll now see a list of all your Google Talk friends listed in the Gbridge window, as well as a list of folders that you are current sharing. You can share files as well as chat with your friends directly in Gbridge. They do not have to install Gbridge to chat with you, but will need the software to access your shared files from their computer.

Gbridge has a sample folder shared by default, but can easily add others from the SecureShare tab. Simply select a folder and choose friends with whom you wish to share that folder with. They’ll now will be able to browse the contents of that shared folder as well download files using a web browser.

Remotely Access another Computer

In addition to file sharing, Gbridge also let you to remotely access your other computers (or that of your friends) over VPN. You can do this via the built-in VNC client (called DesktopShare) or through Windows Remote Desktop. The latter option is only available if you are on XP Pro, Vista Business or Windows 7 Professional.

Simply select the DesktopShare option on the computer that you wish to control, click “Configure Gbridge DesktopShare,” select who should access that computer and add a password. These people can now remotely access and control the computer.

Alternatively, create a common Google account and use it on both the computers – you can then remotely control the other computer without DesktopShare.

With GBridge, you can sync selected folders that you always have the same file on all your computer. This option may also be used to backup files on a remote computer.

Limitations of your VPN Setup

Gbridge requires Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows 7 but there’s no support for Mac or Linux machines. The application uses unsigned drivers, and while this will only prompt a security dialog in 32 bit versions of Windows, it won’t install in 64 bit editions since these require signed drivers.

Gbridge is otherwise a brilliant solution. You can stream MP3 files, show photos and video without uploading them anywhere, remotely fix a problem on your friend’s computer, access your home files from office or even unblock restricted sites. All this using your Google account.

Alternatives may include Opera Unite, Purple Nova and Team Viewer.
