Michael Jackson’s skin condition has been reported to be vitiligo. Vitiligo causes the the skin to loose it’s pigmentation resulting in white patches.

There is no known cause for vitiligo though doctors and scientists suspect is may be due to an immune system disorder. It does seem to be more common in people with other autoimmune diseases such as lupus. It most often starts as it did with Michael Jackson before the age of 40.

The 30-day mortality (death) and readmission rates for acute care of heart attack and heart failure patients vary significantly from hospital to hospital across the nation, according to a new study published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.

Researchers analyzed findings from the 2009 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) 30-day outcomes report for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and heart failure, part of the CMS Hospital Compare quality initiative.

Obesity Among US Adults Continues To Rise

The proportion of U.S. adults who are obese increased to 26.1 percent in 2008 compared to 25.6 percent in 2007. The data come from CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a state-based phone survey that collects health information from adults aged 18 and over.

Minnesota Records 2 Additional H1N1-Associated Deaths

Two additional deaths associated with the H1N1 novel influenza virus have been reported to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

That brings to three the total number of deaths in the state linked to the ongoing H1N1 outbreak.

The two latest deaths were reported in an elderly individual and a child, both from the Twin Cities area. The elderly patient had underlying medical problems and had been hospitalized. The child had an extensive bacterial infection, in addition to being infected with the H1N1 virus.

Clark County Reports Second H1N1-Related Death

The Southern Nevada Health District announced the second H1N1-related death in a Clark County resident. The patient, a 51-year-old man with an underlying medical condition, was hospitalized June 25 and died Friday, July 3. The health district is not able to release additional details due to patient privacy concerns.

Alberta has confirmed a second death associated with the H1N1 flu. An Edmonton area woman with chronic pre-existing medical conditions passed away June 30. It is still not clear what role the H1N1 virus played in the middle-aged woman’s death.

“I want to express my sympathy to the family at this difficult time,” said Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health. “Alberta, like all jurisdictions across the country, remains vigilant in tracking the progress of the H1N1 virus. The sad and stark reality is that we expect that we will see other deaths associated with H1N1.”
