Michael Jackson's Skin Condition - Vitiligo

Michael Jackson’s skin condition has been reported to be vitiligo. Vitiligo causes the the skin to loose it’s pigmentation resulting in white patches.

There is no known cause for vitiligo though doctors and scientists suspect is may be due to an immune system disorder. It does seem to be more common in people with other autoimmune diseases such as lupus. It most often starts as it did with Michael Jackson before the age of 40.

Two additional deaths associated with the H1N1 novel influenza virus have been reported to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

That brings to three the total number of deaths in the state linked to the ongoing H1N1 outbreak.

The two latest deaths were reported in an elderly individual and a child, both from the Twin Cities area. The elderly patient had underlying medical problems and had been hospitalized. The child had an extensive bacterial infection, in addition to being infected with the H1N1 virus.

Toward Better Understanding Of Brain

As the organ most central to our being, the brain and its functions have presented an inexhaustible series of challenges for scientists. Whether we are making decisions, enjoying music or enduring pain, the brain governs and influences most of our reactions.

For close to a century, McGill University and its researchers have made major advances in our understanding of the brain. A world leader in the field of neuroscience, the institution is launching a new era with The Brain@McGill, an initiative based on interdisciplinarity and the transmission of knowledge.

Viral Meningitis Warning As Heatwave Predicted

With temperatures predicted to soar this week, the UK's longest established meningitis charity - the Meningitis Trust - is urging people to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease, as cases are known to peak during hot summers.

Viral meningitis is a disease that can cause life-changing after-effects and although it is very rarely life-threatening, it can take people a long time to recover. There isn't a vaccine to prevent it, so vigilance is the key to keeping yourself and others around you safe this summer.

Second Alberta Fatality Associated With H1N1 Flu

Alberta has confirmed a second death associated with the H1N1 flu. An Edmonton area woman with chronic pre-existing medical conditions passed away June 30. It is still not clear what role the H1N1 virus played in the middle-aged woman’s death.

“I want to express my sympathy to the family at this difficult time,” said Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health. “Alberta, like all jurisdictions across the country, remains vigilant in tracking the progress of the H1N1 virus. The sad and stark reality is that we expect that we will see other deaths associated with H1N1.”

ECDC Issues Chlamydia Control Guidance

In the coming summer months it is estimated that 200,000 young people in Europe will become infected with Chlamydia and most of them won't know that they are infected.

Chlamydia trachomatis, the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in Europe, continues to increase in many countries. The true occurrence of Chlamydia is most likely much higher than the official figures because the majority of the infected do not have clinical symptoms.
