The Mark of Cain documents the fading art form and language of Russian criminal tattoos, formerly a forbidden topic in Russia. The now vanishing practice is seen as reflecting the transition of the broader Russian society. Filmed in some of Russia;s most notorious prisons, including the fabled White Swan, the interviews with prisoners, guards, and criminologists reveal the secret language of The Zone and The Code of Thieve.

The prisoners of the Stalinist Gulag, or "Zone," as it is called, developed a complex social structure (documented as early as the 1920s) that incorporated highly symbolic tattooing as a mark of rank. The existence of these inmates at prisons and forced labor camps was treated by the state as a deeply-kept secret. In the 1990s, Russia's prison population exploded, with overcrowding among the worst in the world. Some estimates suggest that in the last generation over thirty million of Russia's inmates have had tattoos even though the process is illegal inside Russian prisons.

The Mark of Cain examines every aspect of the tattooing, from the actual creation of the tattoo ink, interviews with the tattooers and soberly looks at the double-edged sword of prison tattoos. In many ways, they were needed to survive brutal Russian prisons, but mark the prisoner for life, which complicates any readmission to normal society they may have. Tattoos expressly identify what the convict has been convicted of, how many prisons he;s been in and what kind of criminal he is. Tattoos, essentially, tell you everything you need to know about that person without ever asking. Each tattoo represents a variety of things; cupolas on churches represent the number of convictions a convict has, epaulets tattooed on shoulders represent the rank of the individual in the crime world and so on and so forth.

The unflinching look at the Russian prison system is slowly woven into the film. Cells meant to hold 15 hold 35 to 45 men. Drug resistant tuberculosis runs rampant through the prison populations and prisoners are served three meals a day of watery slop. There are allegations of brutality by the guards. As these men deal with pestilence, violence and grossly substandard living conditions, the prison guards and administration put on a talent show.

The film served as source material for David Cronenberg's 2007 dramatic movie, Eastern Promises. He commented, "This is a very courageous documentary on the tattooing subculture in Russian prisons. I don't know how it ever got made, but it's beautiful, scary, and heartbreaking."

Brasil, 2006, 20 min. - Direção: Vinicius Possebon "Moscão"

Em 2006, a então relatora do tema “Defensores de Direitos Humanos” da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), Hina Jilani, realizou uma série de audiências no Brasil para ouvir as denúncias dos movimentos sociais sobre casos de violações dos direitos humanos no país. Este vídeo foi produzido para a ocasião de sua passagem por Santa Catarina.
O filme aborda três episódios recentes da história de Santa Catarina, são eles: a manifestação de repúdio ao “Relógio dos 500 anos” instalado pela Rede Globo nas capitais do país em 2000; a luta do Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens (MAB) no ano de 2005 e as manifestações de resistência ao aumento das tarifas do transporte público em Florianópolis, episódio que ficou conhecido como “Revolta da Catraca”.
Nestes três casos, a violência da repressão e criminalização dos movimentos sociais, marcou o papel da polícia militar catarinense na violação dos direitos humanos e dos direitos civis básicos da livre manifestação e expressão, nos quais se sustenta o “Estado democrático de direito”. A partir da denúncia, “Democracia Militar” busca fomentar o debate sobre a qualidade e, no limite, sobre a possibilidade de um regime democrático no qual a ação dos aparelhos repressivos pauta-se pelo total desrespeito aos direitos básicos dos cidadãos.

Assimilações da aula “O espetáculo e o espectador”, ministrada pelo Prof. Dr. Clóvis de Barros Filho, acerca do subjetivismo cartesiano, do cientificismo galilaico e do humanismo moderno

Não matematize radicalmente o conhecimento. Eu duvido, logo sou. Eu penso. Não se duvida da dúvida. Confiável está na esfera do relativo. Absoluta é a verdade dos números. As certezas absolutas estão e devem estar ao alcance de qualquer um.

Antes de Galileu, a ciência era realista, com sua percepção ingênua e espontânea do mundo. A perspectiva galilaica inverte o processo. Galileu, com sua nova Física, propõe uma matematização radical do conhecimento. O quantitativismo científico proposto pela matematização da ciência começa a despertar inquietação. Passa-se a tornar igual aquilo que não é exatamente igual, o mundo é submetido a abuso.
O método cartesiano propõe o Discurso do Método, com sua concepção mecanicista da natureza. Este seria mais verossímil se fossem aparadas as arestas da singularidade dos fenômenos, que tornam toda a quantificação abusiva e estuprante de um real que não se pode categorizar e matematizar, porque cada unidade de real apresenta sua singularidade. Isso torna a quantificação abusiva e nada garantidora de certeza alguma.

Pouco a pouco são definidas teses metodológicas qualitativistas que buscavam o afinamento com a singularidade das unidades de real. Essas teses são menos pretensiosas e lidam com um mundo infinitamente complexo que não se pode tratar com certeza.
Essa sistematização é rompida com o advento do Humanismo. O pensador moderno não pretendia investigar certezas a respeito do mundo e de si mesmo ou conhecer por conhecer. Entretanto, buscava um projeto grandioso de civilização. O pensador moderno enxergava a civilização à frente, buscava por uma finalidade da sua existência e do coletivo. Assim, a sociedade passa de um realismo ingênuo a um idealismo garantidor das verdades absolutas.
A emancipação e a felicidade são pontos de chegada do esforço civilizatório humanista. O humanismo pressupõe o “eu sei aonde quero chegar”. Essa felicidade serve de norte para todo e qualquer esforço reflexivo. No pensamento moderno humanista, os esforços de conhecimentos são meios para se chegar a um fim.

O paradigma da subjetividade levou à desconstrução do sujeito. Este mundo passa a perder a capacidade de cogitar sobre os fins. Heidegger definira esta impossibilidade de reflexão sobre os fins como o mundo da técnica. Mundo em que o meio vale pelo meio. Os meios acumulados dispensam a reflexão sobre a finalidade desses meios. O desenvolvimento das forças produtivas (Marx) basta por si próprio. Tramita um esforço espetacular de acumulação de meios, sem que se possa saber para que, com que finalidade, para onde vamos. Daí, o mundo da técnica, a técnica é reflexão sobre os meios. Mas aqui a reflexão sobre os meios dispensa a reflexão sobre os fins. Os fins são os próprios meios.

A primeira modernidade é substituída por outra, por uma segunda modernidade. Esta se caracteriza por um momento profundo de desconstrução dos valores modernos e questiona o paradigma do sujeito, tanto da ciência moderna, quanto das finalidades humanistas. O outro é problematizado, é um ponto de interrogação espetacular. O outro se manifesta, é pouco mais que uma coisa. Quem garante que suas manifestações correspondem aos aspectos essenciais? Posiciona-se sob o crivo da dúvida radical do cartesianismo, assim como tudo que passa pelos olhos. Descartes tem dificuldade de incorporar o outro. Não se pode ter certeza que o outro também pense. Torna-se difícil o estabelecimento de uma civilização feliz devido à incerteza que o outro possa ser pensante, duvidante, cogitante. O outro não passa de uma probabilidade. Cai-se no solipsismo, na solidão aprisionante.

Hoje o universo foi redimensionalizado em onze facetas, com a construção das teorias das supercordas, à procura de novos conceitos para a reunificação dos fenômenos mais distintos e para a resolução de problemas, como o da gravitação quântica. Entretanto, ainda que bastante plausíveis, essas teorias carecem em reprodutibilidade.

Perspectiva estética do espetáculo
Durante muito tempo de reflexão filosófica, acreditava-se que o belo era um dado das coisas do mundo. O belo é natureza e esta é bela porque cósmica, porque ordenada, porque compreensível. Então neste ponto da reflexão, tipicamente grego, a obra de arte era a imitação da natureza, a bela obra de arte era a bela imitação da natureza. O belo está em tudo ordenadamente coligado para que o universo funcione bem. A obra de arte é a imitação desse belo. O belo neste momento independe do eu.

A modernidade propõe a reflexão de que se o sujeito comanda o espetáculo. Como se pode dizer que o sujeito não participa da definição do belo? O homem moderno, giro antropocêntrico, traz pra si a possibilidade de distinguir o belo do feio. A partir daí, o que importa fundamentalmente é o sujeito. Nada mais será belo em si, mas será belo quando constatado pelo sujeito como tal. Portanto, de certa forma, a beleza não se impõe mais, mas a beleza é um resultado da apreciação subjetiva do mundo. Dentro dessa perspectiva, a árvore ou a lua não são nem belas nem feias, mas somos nós que lhes daremos esse estatuto.
