Bear, DE (Oct. 15, 2011). Emergency Ultrasound Consultants, LLC (EUC), pioneers in emergency/point-of-care ultrasound education, and quality assurance solutions, announces longitudinal results of their premier Virtual Ultrasound Director (VUD) clients; Westmoreland Emergency Medicine Specialists and Excela Health in Pennsylvania.

The Virtual Ultrasound Director (VUD) ProgramTM, powered by Ultralinq and Adobe ConnectTM 8, is a, comprehensive, customizable, virtual training curriculum with ultrasound peer-review, and live webinars. The VUD provides reviews and tracks emergency physician ultrasound scanning to meet the American College of Emergency Physicians’ (ACEP) Emergency Ultrasound Guidelines and help doctors gain hospital credentialing in emergency ultrasound.

In 2009, Westmoreland Emergency Medicine Specialists and Excela Health selected an EUC 2-Day ultrasound course and their VUD Program to simultaneously train and credential 28 emergency physicians in emergency ultrasound (EUS) using the General Electric (GE) LOGIQ e and wireless uploads to the Ultralinq web-based image management system.

Since May 2009, EUC’s Daniel Morrison, MD, RDMS, served as the Virtual Ultrasound Director for Westmoreland and Excela, working with their onsite EUS Director, Lisa Barr, MD. Over two years, Excela emergency physicians performed over 3,500 emergency ultrasounds that were peer-reviewed with web-based feedback and documentation through the EUC-VUD using Ultralinq.

Currently over 50% of Westmoreland emergency physicians have met or exceeded ACEP Ultrasound Credentialing Guidelines in one application, with 28% of physicians exceeding them in more than one application. These physicians have all successfully obtained hospital credentialing in these ultrasound applications.

At EUC, our clients’ success is our primary focus, Dr. Barr agrees; “Westmoreland Emergency Medicine Specialists needed an efficient and quality program to train our physicians in point-of-care ultrasound. EUC expertly guided us through the first crucial years of ultrasound training, giving specialized onsite instruction to our community physician group, and then providing rapid personal feedback to each physician via their online peer review. The monthly VUD webinars were fantastic, giving case reviews personalized for our group, using ultrasounds we obtained. As each physician met ACEP criteria, EUC confirmed ACEP guidelines were met with a letter to hospital credentials. This made credentialing a smooth and stress free process. EUC gave me the tools to become an effective ultrasound director, teaching me how to run monthly case reviews and QA. EUC was always available to answer any questions we had. EUC Is unparalleled in what it offers in bedside emergency ultrasound training.”

“The EUC-VUD Program is the only comprehensive, web-based, emergency ultrasound training program proven to help emergency physicians obtain hospital credentialing in emergency ultrasound. Our results confirm that our VUD program is a scaleable, practical, valued service for emergency physicians, hospitals and healthcare systems.” states Paul R. Sierzenski, MD, RDMS, President / CEO of EUC.

EUC will be exhibiting their products and services including the VUD at the ACEP Scientific Assembly October 15th-17th, 2011 at the The Moscone Center (South), San Francisco, CA. Booth # 2131.

Today The Sullivan Group (TSG), the leader in web-based clinical risk management solutions, announced a partnership with Emergency Ultrasound Consultants (EUC), the leader in point-of-care ultrasound education, to offer a library of courses targeted at leveraging ultrasound in the Emergency Medicine environment.

Declines in cost and improvements in technology and portability have resulted in increasing availability of ultrasound at the point of care. With the appropriate training, ED physicians can efficiently and effectively use ultrasound to screen for many high-risk conditions such as AAA, presence of foreign bodies, and existence of pericardial effusion, dramatically improving patient outcomes and emergency department throughput.

EUC and TSG will jointly launch a unique web-based educational series in 2010 called “Sound Medical Practice: Reducing Medical Errors by Using Emergency Ultrasound.” This series of dynamic courses will educate physicians, healthcare professionals and administrators on how to reduce errors, improve efficiency, and effect clinical decision-making by using ultrasound in emergency, trauma and critical care settings. “Our combined areas of expertise are a powerful, natural fit,” says EUC President and CEO Dr. Paul Sierzenski. “EUC’s proven ultrasound educational products and quality assurance services integrate well with TSG’s performance improvement focus. TSG’s robust web-based delivery and knowledge assessment system will further enhance the impact of this offering,” Dr. Sierzenski added.

Courses will include ultrasound guidance on procedures and common clinical scenarios where the delay in diagnosis represents significant risk to patient care. Compliance with national ultrasound recommendations, such as those by the AHRQ and other quality organizations, will be addressed.

“Point-of-care ultrasound is one of the most powerful yet under-utilized risk management tools deployed in EDs today,” said Dr. Sullivan, President and CEO of TSG. “Fortunately, the use of point-of-care ultrasound is growing rapidly in Emergency Medicine as clinicians recognize the opportunities to improve patient care and reduce errors.”

Leading medical specialists such as EUC continue to leverage TSG’s world-class Learning Management System (LMS) to bring their expertise to the healthcare community. TSG’s LMS allows authors to rapidly create lessons formatted for the web and disseminate that material to the 50,000 healthcare providers currently working with TSG.

Emergency Ultrasound Consultants, LLC (EUC), the experts in point-of-care ultrasound education and quality assurance solutions, announced today a strategic partnership with The Sullivan Group (TSG), a world leading provider of patient safety, risk management and performance improvement solutions for healthcare professionals.

Medical errors are the eighth leading cause of death in the United States according to the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report; To Err Is Human: Building A Safer Health System. It is estimated that nearly $17 Billion is wasted annually on healthcare costs for preventable medical errors. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) identifies “Diagnostic error, such as misdiagnosis leading to an incorrect choice of therapy…” as a leading cause of medical errors. Point-of-care ultrasound has proven to be a validated tool in decreasing procedure complications and reducing error in clinical decisions.

“EUC is proud to add to the history of transformational healthcare contributions from the ‘First State’. Delaware was first to have a statewide enhanced 911 system, was innovative in the delivery of emergency care, and now through EUC, Delaware will be pivotal in helping reduce medical errors through emergency ultrasound,” says Paul R. Sierzenski, MD, RDMS, EUC President, and Past-Chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Ultrasound Section.

EUC and TSG will jointly launch a unique web-based educational series in 2010 called “Sound Medical Practice: Reducing Medical Errors by Using Emergency Ultrasound”. This series of dynamic courses will educate physicians, healthcare professionals and administrators on how to reduce errors, improve efficiency, and effect clinical decision-making by using ultrasound in emergency, trauma and critical care settings. “Our combined areas of expertise are a powerful, natural fit,” says Dr. Sierzenski. “EUC’s proven ultrasound educational products and quality assurance services integrate well with TSG’s performance improvement focus. TSG’s robust web-based delivery and knowledge assessment system will further enhance the impact of this offering,” Dr. Sierzenski added.

Courses will include ultrasound guidance of procedures and common clinical scenarios where the delay in diagnosis represents significant risk to patient care. Compliance with national ultrasound recommendations, such as those by the AHRQ and other quality organizations will be addressed. As healthcare resources are strained, the expanding role and value of point-of-care ultrasound in clinical care to improve patient care and reduce errors is gaining momentum.

Daniel Sullivan, MD, JD, President and CEO of TSG states, “The proper implementation of an emergency department ultrasound program is a key component of a comprehensive patient safety and medical error reduction program. Our strategic relationship with EUC is perfectly aligned with TSG’s mission to deliver system solutions that improve patient safety and reduce risk.”
