The initial few hours at the airport were awful because the counter people were not at all helpful. I overheard another passenger say something to the effect of: this is the first and last time I'm coming to India. I lost count of the number of times I was told, "Sorry I can't help you. Go wait in that line over there." Also, I was pretty much flat out lied to. Lie #1: Your flight has been rescheduled to 2pm tomorrow." Lie #2: You will get a refund (from that counter over there) and then you can book your own flight through another carrier." The real story (I hope) is that they have put us on a different flight with a different airline scheduled to leave <12 hours later than the original flight, and they put us in a very nice hotel for the wait (with a/c!!). Not bad, but after this morning, I'm not sure that I can believe it until I'm actually on the plane. Just hoping that it all works out!

I almost walked right past it and left without realizing it was there. So glad I caught sight of it.

When walking through the first time, I realized that none of his pieces had the usual placards next to them, and actually, I didn't think much about it at first. Not until I was leaving did I see the laminated sheets on the wall. It was a surprisingly different experience, seeing the art separated from its labels. I realized that when those placards are placed right next to the art, I sometimes end up just glancing at the art, and then honing in on the description without really processing what I've seen for myself first. How sad. It's almost like cheating, seeing the answer before even really thinking about the question at hand. Even if you return to think about the question, it loses something once you have the answer, doesn't it?

Anyway, I looked at the sheet with the titles of his pieces, and of course the one that jumped out at me was "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down." I've certainly thought this before, and I would bet that there isn't a New Yorker out there who hasn't thought this at least once. I went back to look for it because it wan't immediately obvious to me which piece it was and found it based on the description (wooden beads), rather than the title. It was installed in the corner of the room, which it seems is not how it was meant to be seen. What I found online: 
"The mobile is intended to reach from the ceiling to the floor, ending up in an overflowing pile. The simple act of walking by and accidentally kicking the beads or cleaning the floor constantly recreates a new order in which the mobile is hung."
and
"The movement of the piece comes from the random collection created on the floor rather than air or traditional kinetics on which conventional mobiles are reliant."

I guess that's the problem with museums, as wonderful as they are.

i am incredibly grateful for wonderful friends who opened their home for a delicious dinner yesterday evening. it helped ease the sadness of not being able to go back to the east coast to spend thanksgiving with my family and to see my dog for the last time. a few days ago, we found out that his kidneys are failing. as difficult as it is, we have come to terms with the fact that the most humane option is to put him to sleep. he has been a part of our family for 15 years.

i had a lot of fun skyping with him for the first (and last) time. he had no clue what was going on per usual.

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;

And wisdom to know the difference.

I have the entire weekend off (!!), which afforded me the luxury of not having to get out of bed right away this morning. As I lay there in the dark, this serenity prayer came into my mind. My first exposure to it was just a few years back during a meeting with my amazing academic advisor. The second time was in a song composed/performed by a wonderfully talented friend. So now whenever I think of those lines, I think of it to his melody.

My entertainment yesterday morning on my run was a man pushing his 3 yr old daughter in a stroller.

I only caught the end of the story he was telling his daughter, but I suspect that I heard the most important part:

... So the first squirrel said to the cheating squirrel, "I put a special coating on that acorn to make it taste bad so that you would learn a lesson and never steal other squirrels' acorns." The cheating squirrel thought for awhile about what the first squirrel said and then he decided to go to New York and become a banker.

Later on:
Dad: Why is everyone passing us?
Girl: Because you're fat.

So thrilled that Rebecca Onie was awarded a MacArthur grant! She founded a wonderful organization called Project HEALTH that I am proud to have been involved in throughout undergrad. It's amazing to see how much the organization has changed and grown. Also a bit sad because the specific program I was involved in is no longer part of the PH family, but I'm very glad to see that Project HEALTH is still going strong.
