I just bought six square pieces of spongy fabric for $20 and walked away happy - "victim" of an impulse purchase.

I was at one of those big show events and walked past a demonstration booth. I even knew it was coming. About 50% of the people walking out were carrying two bright yellow cylinder-things.

As we walked toward the convention center, I told Tim (my other half), "There's one of those guys with a microphone in there, doing a demonstration. He gets people so excited they think they have to buy those things. They over-pay then never use them." I said this a bit smugly. I know of such things, so I wouldn't succumb.

Yeah, right. This guy was good. So good, I came away with five ideas for increasing sales from impulse purchases and ideas on how they might be applied online.

Next time you evaluate short-term sales and online marketing strategies, think about and apply these five impulse purchase lessons...

Online Impulse Purchase Lesson #1:

Demonstrate an impressive, relevant feature.
If the product is chocolate, sold at a retail checkout stand, you have no need for this one. Human nature takes over. When you are selling unrecognizable cylinder things - or sold on the Internet - people need some encouragement.
You would never know it to look at them, but these things were super absorbent shammies.

They can suck 8 - 10 ounces of soda out of your carpet in nothing flat AND it makes for an impressive demonstration. When the demonstrator mentioned they could dry a sweater in three hours, I was hooked. Never mind we have about two spills a year in my house and I don't own any "lay flat to dry" sweaters.

This ability to get people to "live in the moment" is one key to a successful impulse purchase demonstration. The salesperson has a lot to do with it, of course. Repetition of an incredible, attractive feature, however, is key as well.

Think of any infomercial or "Billy Mays" product. There is always an "AMAZING!" feature - cooks in minutes, instantly removes stains, easily pulls dings from your car, etc. This technique doesn't have to be only live or on television to work. Who in the U.S. hasn't walked past a display playing a recorded product demonstration.

Take this concept and extend it online by inserting a streaming, play-on-demand video or audio clip* next to key products on your site. You could also include the clip (or a link to a demo page) in your newsletter.

#2: Try to "time it right".

Quite coincidentally, one of those semiannual spills in my house happened the day before I bumped into the yellow cylinder guy. I was thinking "If I'd had these yesterday, right now we wouldn't have books stacked in the middle of the living room floor." Quite by accident, he had related to something that was top-of-mind for me.

Fortunately, you do not have to rely on coincidence. At any one time, there are usually six or eight generally popular "themes" you could tie into. Better yet, your target audience is likely to have it's own unique interests.

On the Internet, you can "time it right" by associating complementary products or services. If someone is researching monitors, for example, perhaps they need an ink cartridge for their printer.

Showing or highlighting ink cartridges on the screen along with the monitors may incite an impulse purchase. Better yet - and this is impossible unless you have order histories or detailed profiles - show them the exact cartridge they need.

#3 Make it easy.

It turns out the cylinder things costs a flat $20. There was no change to mess with, no stopping to fill in order forms, and no multiple pieces of currency. As people pulled $20's out of their pockets, the demonstrator took them and handed over the shammies in a single motion.

On the Internet, you can make it easy in two ways - ordering and delivery.

Make the order process as simple as possible. Amazon's "Quick-Click" links are a good example of making ordering easy. Easy delivery is another way to encourage impulse purchases on the Internet. Immediately downloadable digital items are an example. For physical items, quick delivery - overnight, same day, or local store pick-up - can increase sales.

#4 Give an enticingly presented discount.

A roll of three shammies was $21 something, but the guy was taking care of the sales tax, which made it an even $20 (But wait, there's more!). Because it was early he would throw in another 3-roll for no additional charge. Caught up in the moment, we nodded agreement. We were getting a deal - no sales tax plus three free.

The way a discount is presented can make a deal sound either appealing or "not such a deal". Which sounds better?...

a) "Buy One, Get One Half Off." OR "Buy Two and Get a 25% Discount."

Another way to encourage impulse purchases is to give a discount by bundling. Offer to reduce the price on a second, related item (Like in example "a", above.).

Before the holidays or other major events, you can encourage higher online order size with discounts. One way is to offer a discount on one item when your customer purchases a different item. Another way to raise order size with a discount is to give your customers lower (or free) shipping if they purchase a certain dollar amount or higher.

#5 "Keeping up with the Joneses."

Instead of putting the shammies in a bag, the demonstrator rolled them up into a cylinder. This way, people at the show would see others carrying them around and wonder what they were missing.

The same concept can be applied to the Internet. I have seen messages like: "Others who bought 'x' also bought 'y'" on order forms, at check out, and on product screens.

So there they are - five tactics the yellow cylinder guy used to convince me (and nearly everyone around me) to happily walk away with six shammies. By correctly applying these same techniques, your sales can soar as well.

As some of you may have heard, Talkgold.com has recently been sold. Everyone has to move on at some point business wise, but like I said I will not be going anywhere in a personal sense. This will free up time, and money for me to continue working on projects I have been working on for years offline, while also giving me the opportunity to help Brad and the gang bring before us what I feel will be a major step in the right direction for the entire online earning community, TeamEarners.com, which will be integrated within Talkgold itself.

The terms of the deal will not be presented publicly as there really is no need to do so. The Party which the site was sold too will remain hands off from a members point of view, and may or may not decide to post at the forum. Like I said, the most important part of the sale was not, believe it or not, the price it was sold for, but rather the people who it was being sold to. As everyone knows there are a lot of thieves, criminals, liars and cheats out there, and if I were to let talkgold fall into the wrong hands, perhaps someone out to exploit the community, it would have been a nightmare. The future of Talkgold is bright. There will be changes with the addition of TeamEarners, and some othe minor things as well, but the overall way things work will remain just as they have been since January 2003 when we opened the doors.

You may be astonished over the news but rumours have been flying around before and now It's true! What about the price of the forum? Ways to Improve your Alexa ranking!

1. Install the Alexa toolbar or Firefox’s SearchStatus extension and set your blog as your homepage. This is the most basic step.

2. Put up an Alexa rank widget on your website. I did this a few days ago and receive a fair amount of clicks every day. According to some, each click counts as a visit even if the toolbar is not used by the visitor.

3. Encourage others to use the Alexa toolbar. This includes friends, fellow webmasters as well as site visitors/blog readers. Be sure to link to Alexa’s full explanation of their toolbar and tracking system so your readers know what installing the toolbar or extension entails.

4. Work in an Office or own a company? Get the Alexa toolbar or SS Firefox extension installed on all computers and set your website as the homepage for all browsers. Perhaps it will be useful to note that this may work only when dynamic or different IPs are used.

5. Get friends to review and rate your Alexa website profile. Not entirely sure of its impact on rankings but it might help in some way.

6. Write or Blog about Alexa. Webmaster and bloggers love to hear about ways to increase their Alexa rank. They’ll link to you and send you targeted traffic (i.e. visitors with the toolbar already installed). This gradually has effects on your Alexa ranking.

10. Post in Asian social networking websites or forums. Some webmasters have suggested that East Asian web users are big Alexa toolbar fans, judging by the presence of several Asia-based websites in the Alexa Top 500. I suggest trying this only if you have the time or capacity to do so.

11. Create a webmaster tools section on your website. This is a magnet for webmasters who will often revisit your website to gain access to the tools. Aaron Wall’s webpage on SEOTools is a very good example.

12. Get Dugg or Stumbled. This usually brings massive numbers of visitors to your website and the sheer amount will have a positive impact on your Alexa Rank. Naturally, you’ll need to develop link worthy material.

20. Try Alexa auto-surfs. Do they work? Maybe for brand new sites. I think they are mostly suitable for new websites with a very poor Alexa rank. Note that there be problems when you try to use auto surfs alongside contextual ads like Adsense. They aren’t also long term solutions to improving your Alexa Rank so I suggest using with caution.

Good news for Malaysian Paypal Users!

It has been a problem for Malaysians to withdraw their Paypal funds since there has been no withdrawal option besides selling them to money exchangers.

From now onwards, Malaysian users can withdraw to their debit and credit cards(haven't tried it though)but only cards with VISA LOGO has the access to that and mastercard has yet to be accepted but I believe It wouldn't be too far from now on. A total of 26 countries were added to that functionality.

Each withdrawal fee costs $5 usd and the minimum withdrawal amount if $10 USD. Don't bother to withdraw $10 USD LOL because the fee you have to bear with is already 50% of it :P.

The maximum withdrawal is 500 USD and processing time takes about 5 - 7 business days.

We were completely *EMBARRASSED* when we realized this happened. That simple message was part of our application code and was meant to appear only on *OUR* WEB SITE PAGES if we ever experienced an outage. This was accidentally marked to be a global error message for ANY outage including if our widget ever had a problem loading. This was a major GOOF and were willing to admit it. Our code was planned so that in the case of a problem with our widget, NOTHING WOULD LOAD in its place. So a visitor to your blog doesnt see an error or anything wrong should the widget ever have any technical issues.

This was quickly corrected and is now working properly. Should the widget ever have any problem loading in the future, your blog will be served a transparent space (which will show whatever background your blog design has) and your blog readers wont really notice anything.

Again, our sincere apologies for our major goof. It was quite embarrassing.

NOW ONTO SOME SERIOUS ISSUES

We also realize that we completely underestimated the number of unethical people that would sign up and proceed to CHEAT and try to game the BlogRush system. These cheaters ruined the click-rates of many of our members (and burned through a lot of their credits using automated exploit methods) and hurt BlogRushs ability to send maximum traffic to our honest members blogs.

Our team is going to be manually reviewing every single new blog that registers to participate in the BlogRush Network.

Well be applying some quality guidelines and criteria to our decision-making process. (Well be publishing these guidelines very soon.) If a blog does not meet our guidelines and criteria, THEY WILL BE REJECTED from the network and not allowed to join i.e. they wont be able to serve our widget, refer other users, or have their blog posts distributed across our network. They will have no access to any BlogRush services.

Our members, like YOU, made it LOUD AND CLEAR to us BlogRush needs to only have members that have quality blog content not blogs filled primarily with ads and other spammy looking JUNK.

The only accurate way were going to keep these junk blogs out of our network is to REVIEW EVERY SINGLE ONE BY HAND. And were willing to do it to protect the integrity of our network. I dont care what it costs us to hire more people (if we need them) to review 100% of any blog trying to join our network. We will be reviewing ALL OF THEM from here on out.

* We realize that several non-English language blogs blatantly ignored our ENGLISH BLOGS ONLY warning on our Registration page. Rest assured, though, theyll all be PURGED from the network when we do our QUALITY CONTROL AUDIT over the next several days (youll read about it in a moment).

As Ive said several times before, BlogRush isnt some passing fad or short-term service. Were dedicated to building an incredibly valuable resources for bloggers FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

Well also be doing a QUALITY CONTROL AUDIT of all of our existing member blogs. Well be reviewing every single blog thats currently in our network (or that registers before the Manual Review Process becomes active.) And well be completely *REMOVING* any blogs in our network that dont meet our quality guidelines and criteria.

As you can probably tell by now, were not messing around. We have put a lot of hard work into the development of this service and we will continue to bust our butts to make it one of the best Internet services in the world. COUNT ON IT.

Were also deploying several new Anti-Cheat measures to SHUTDOWN AND WIPEOUT the cheaters and unethical users that have abused our network. Sorry, crooks, but THE FREE RIDE IS OVER.

Well be dedicating an entire department to stay on top of any abusive behavior in our network. We believe that our new measures are going to instantly eliminate most, if not all, of our system abuse. Its going to take us a few more days to roll-out all of these measures (and to complete our entire QUALITY CONTROL AUDIT) but rest assured, BlogRush is about to go through a major TRANSFORMATION.

And a quick word to any cheats that might be reading this letter its very possible that you may come up with something extremely creative that temporarily gets by us, but you should know something ITS NOT GOING TO BE WORTH YOUR TIME. And Im not just talking about the tiny amount of traffic that youll receive before we shut you off.

You see, we have other plans in the works

If you attempt to cheat or abuse our network in anyway, shape, or form, we will not hesitate to come after you. Our company is well funded and has plenty of resources. And we WILL use them to punish you to the fullest extent of the law (and civil court process). Oh, you think you can just hide behind some anonymous proxy IPs? Sorry, its not that easy. ANY reason youd have to try and cheat the BlogRush network for traffic and any attempt you make to monetize that traffic will lead directly to your front door whether its AdSense, any affiliate program in the world, any online pharmacy, porn site, casino ANYTHING. We will follow the trail and it WILL eventually lead to you.

Our hard-working company provides the income for MANY families. As the CEO of our company, I take this very seriously. I HAVE TO. People that attempt to abuse or cheat BlogRush are affecting the livelihood of all my employees and their families. And I will do everything in my power to protect them its MY DUTY.

So for all you cheaters that joined BlogRush and had your fun trying to siphon off some traffic, hopefully it was fun. And Ill go ahead and make this statement right now IF you were one of the people that has been cheating our network Im going to give you ONE opportunity quit now and well pretend it never happened. I think thats more than fair.

BUT if you continue after this point, all bets are off. We WILL eventually discover what youre doing, where youre trying to send traffic, and we will prosecute you. I GUARANTEE IT. Sorry, but WE HAVE NO CHOICE NOW.

* If youre one of our valued, HONEST users, Im very sorry you even have to read stuff like that. I know its a waste of your time. Unfortunately, there are unethical people in this world that attempt to abuse and take advantage of others.

Were going to be greatly expanding our directory of categories to increase the relevancy of post links appearing in the widget on your blog this will also increase click-rates (and traffic) for all members.

**** IMPROVED REPORTING! ****

The current Dashboard stats are being under-reported for all users right now. This is the reason that users show discrepancies when looking at Google Analytics data (or other stats packages). Were currently sending more traffic to our users than were reporting in the Dashboard because we are giving all users bonus credits everyday. Well soon be reporting all bonus credit activity so all the numbers will be accurate.

SPECIAL NOTE TO ALL LOW-TRAFFIC MEMBERS: In the near future well be giving our low-traffic members (those that need more traffic the most) the BULK of our bonus credit allocations. Youll get a ton more bonus credits than high-traffic members because you really need it. Its only FAIR!

* Also we apologize to anyone that has seen a negative credit balance for their account. This is a minor bug that were taking care of. It doesnt mean anything and you can just ignore it for now. We apologize for any confusion.

**** IMPROVED NETWORK DISTRIBUTION ****

A few of our users have noticed that theyre building up credits faster than the system is using them. This will eventually balance itself out as the network continues to adjust to the growth levels and traffic patterns of each category because our network provides syndication distribution based on daily average cycles and then adjusts moving into the future; so its able to accurately predict how fast to use a certain users credits, etc. as compared to just using them all as fast as possible.

**** BLOGRUSH FLAVORS ARE NOW ACTIVE!

You can go login to your account, click the Settings tab and then select Flavors.

You can choose from (13) different widget colors. You no longer have to only use our original black widget design that many users thought was ugly! (Hey, just dont let our lead designer hear that he thought his black design was really cool.)

Now you can select a color that more closely matches the look of your blog. Our users have been asking for this since we launched our Public Beta, and weve taken action to offer these new options.

* We have future plans for further widget customization but were working on one stage of improvement at a time! Please bare with us. Were fully aware of the request for a more narrow widget as our current one doesnt fit on some blogs. Were trying to produce a solution and should have some news soon.

You dont have to copy and paste new code to your blog. Just go to that Flavors section for your account, select the flavor you want, then hit the APPLY FLAVOR button. Thats it! Reload your blog in another browser window and take a look.

And if you want to see what a different flavor might look like, just pick another one, hit the APPLY FLAVOR button and reload your blog. PRESTO!

AND LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST

Under the Settings tab youll also find a new option called, My Post Control. Heres what this awesome new feature does

You can create POST FILTERS for your blog posts

For example, you can add a keyword or phrase and create a new post filter. If you ever create a post on your blog (while you have that filter active and you can add/delete them at anytime) that contains one of those keywords in the TITLE of your blog post, that post

WILL *NOT* BE SHOWN ACROSS THE NETWORK. And you wont use any of your syndication credits!

All bloggers post off-topic stuff from time to time, or short posts that dont have a ton of great content. Well, now you can easily keep any of those types of posts from using your valuable syndication credits and from being shown across the network!

This is GREAT for you because now you can control exactly which posts of yours will be syndicated. This can help you maximize your CLICK-RATES and, ultimately, the traffic you receive from the BlogRush network. AND it can help retain NEW READERS for your blog (your ultimate goal that can grow your blogs traffic on a day-to-day basis.)

Heres Why

By selecting which posts get syndicated (by simply adding filters right BEFORE you publish a post on your blog that you dont want to be used; or having setup one well in advance) you can make sure that youre only syndicating your BEST POSTS. The ones with top-quality content. Your posts that a new visitor to your blog will enjoy and be much more likely to make a YES! decision to become a regular reader for you!

Blogrush requires you to install their widget which show someone else's blog/website entry...

As the picture above, there are topics are shown in the widget whereby when your blog receives a page view,you gain a free credit and with the free credit, your blog post will then show up to another blogrush member related to your category.

Remember to choose the category relevant to u because your ads will only be displayed on the same category website/blog :)

I won't tell much about it yet...but no harm trying a free product rite?

Personally, 2 years ago I started to get to know about online forums like MoneyMakerGroup and Talkgold so there is where I learn about HYIPs, Autosurfs and all sorts of Online Money Making programs. Being there when top notch-ed programs like 12DailyPro, Alientrust as well as 12by12daily...I managed to make a huge sum of money...but in the end..I as well lost money in some SCAMS.

I'm trying to change the way I earn money so then I started blogging for a friend but too bad It didn't went that well, you know why...the e-gold issue is bringing things down.... affecting this industry but now we have all sorts of programs to make money online! :)
