On my last visit to Paris the wife and I visited The Crazy Horse. Not only were the women beautiful but the production, choreography, lighting and the music, was amazing.

Sky Arts are currently showing a behind the scenes documentary about the legendary Parisian cabaret club which reminded me of one of the opening acts which featured this stripped (Geddit…) back French cover version of this Britney Spears classic, slowing it right down to a haunting, emotional masterpiece.

Emotion: Heavenly bliss

Motown does have it’s moments of throwing caution to the wind. Luckily they knew what they were doing when they signed Vanity (also of Vanity 6 – ‘Nasty Girl’ fame).

“Skin to Skin” is a beauty of an album, I’ve also listened to bits of “Wild Animal” it’s predecessor, good effort but it didn’t have the same sultry attraction. They hadn’t been able to create the aura of mystique that just oozes from the latter.

I’d never read much about the band so I headed over to discogs as a starting point. Much to my delite someone had reviewed “Skin to Skin” and reading through I not only felt informed, but in agreement with his opinions as a read along, ‘oh right… cool, exactly… nice one’

Until this.

“Romantic Voyage” (the weakest track) is a lukewarm ballad fit to be a theme song for a 2nd rate cruise line.

Woah there focvs1979, just when I was beginning to warm to you. Lets try that again shall we?

So sad to hear the news about Donna Summer’s passing yesterday. When flicking through my record shelves I wasn’t surprised at just how much of her material I have on vinyl and it’s a pretty safe bet to say I particularly enjoy her work with Giorgio Moroder.

Friday’s are usually dedicated to our more #topsoff selections but considering the nature of the post I’ve opted for a more emotional 80′s groove produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. Spot the sample in this track as used by no other than French house maestros Cassius.

R.I.P the queen of D.I.S.C.O. No doubt she’s currently catching up with friends at the big disco in the sky.

Yes. It’s Friday. It can only mean one thing…

#LETSGETOURFUCKINGTOPSOFF

I absolutely love this record. Back when we were working on the Cosmic Disco blog we used to do our fair share of DJ gigs, not only in Manchester but people used to actually pay us to play records at their parties up and down the country. Hard to believe, I know.

I put together this very simple cut and paste edit using Sound Forge back in 2009 in about 30 minutes. A very straight forward arrangement done with the aim of making it easier for me to mix in/out of based on the style of the old school editors who used to do this shit with tape. Just enough jiggery-pokery here and there with the intro and percussive breaks. Unfortunately I don’t have the original .wav, just this 320kbps .mp3 file (In case anyone asks)…

I featured the track on one of my favourite personal mixes ‘Disco Whiskers‘ which was created in preparation for a guest slot we had at a disco night based in Bristol.
