Outbursts in the aftermath of Mumbai attack are slowly dissipating. Lets look at the strategy + tactics from different angles.

Congress party: They are under pressure for some face saving measures. Army showdown at the border like in 2001 parliament attack is of no use. They might again do it, for aam janatas' sake - who might/might not fall for it. Troops mobilization will also raise another set of humiliating questions - lack of snow boots, lack of proper equipment, et al.

Opposition: Its absence or slumber, will not be missed.

Raj Thackeray/Marathi nationalists: Now they should start thinking about on par suicide missions to attack terrorist schools in Pakistan or wherever they are. Who will be the one to volunteer first?

Public-1: Clamour for resignations will continue for some time. Either a few or the few or entire Government and employees can resign. Shivaraj Patil was the first one to go. If he was incompetent, why was he made a Minister in the first place? Should the public who voted for him - or those who do not exercise their franchise also express their sorry??

Public -2: On day one; I have seen people who were glued to TV streams and counting the casualties. Exchanging information and making a guess on when it would end and the final count. It reminded me of people watching a cricket match. Probably they were following the developments to express their condolences in proportional magnitude. Now every one is back to the pubs, cafes and shopping for luxury products or at least their counterfeits. And human spirit and resilience is wrongly labelled as unique Mumbai

Pakistan: This is a blessing in disguise for them. They are again in focus. More funds will pour in to their country - particularly for army; to help America's fight against terror. All over the world the countries are for or against terrorism. However here its a hybrid situation. If at all they can play their cards right, they can use this opportunity to bolster democracy and civil leadership. Last week they got a bailout of $7.6 billion from IMF, which will come with riders to improve efficiency and viability of services and processes. Government will use this opportunity to rise costs, while the public attention is diverted.

Terrorists: Taking cues from cost-cutting across the sectors; even they have innovated and delivered more bang for the buck. 10 guys grabbed the mindshare of the world for 3 days and aftershocks continue. Indian lives are no longer the most wanted. They can kill any number and any time. Now they are hunting foreign national for that shock-value; as Mumbai spirit is easily overcoming blasts.

Lessons from Mumbai tragedy : An noteworthy take.

Interesting:

If only 10 or less people have died in this attack and within an hour; will public react same way as they are doing now?
Ram Gopal Varma movies' and visits have flopped. Any ways, why is his stroll important and deserve so many soundbites and attention?
Are Indians going to buy more life insurance? as a response. Spend more time with family and increase frequency of prayers?
Who wants to be Blamed? a new game show can be launched.
Similarly, who should Resign? game
More candle light vigils, wear black badge or white shirt, ....... But how many will remember the incident after 30/60/120 days and retrospect?
Will Indian media grow up? As in Amitabh's stomach ache, RGV visit and Commissionar ka kutta missing.
Is Shoba De the Sarah Palin of India?
Will we get a real Intelligence agency >
Will the majority of audience( union of urban, educated & youth) to this media coverage will vote in the next elections? For the right reasons?

I am a die-hard optimist; just like most of Indians. Nation will progress against all odds and calamities. Just consider the growth of India in the last two decades. Today we have relatively better transportation system, medical facilities, communication, more jobs and disposable income,.....

But the question is whether we can accelerate that growth or not. It all hinges on the people. Rather than venting emotional and silly slogans; can WE make rational and sensible choices? Right from paying bribe to the next traffic cop and voting in elections. Even if you cannot, dont worry - India will rise, albeit at a slower pace.

After my "Indian food:Been there, ate that" ; I started off on an expedition to explore 'Points of Interest' in and around Amherst. I wanted to visit all of them before I leave amherst. Fortunately I am not moving far away and can finish them at a slower pace and thus started off on a different trajectory now ;). Now I want to share those with you.

Most of you must have already been to those clichéd places like Antonio pizza, thai food, black sheep, etcetera in the down town, so skipped them from the map.

There are lot of ways to classify the places to visit. I will stick to just two classes: must visit and visit.

Right now I am a bit busy with lot of things, so couldn't write explicit comments for each site. But will keep updating this post frequently, as time permits. As of now, I have plotted about 50% of the places I know. Do let me know if I've missed out anything, which deserves inclusion in the list.

If you are at UMass, we overlook the Dining Commons. A couple of friends and myself used to sneak in for the brunch. We used to go there during the transitional time between breakfast and lunch and try to enjoy the best of both

Also lookout for the special dinners or visiting Chefs.

Most of you might have already explored many options available in our downtown. I also want to include my reviews of good restaurants in Northampton (not necessarily Indian ones) shortly.

My top picks would be India house, Priya, Pintus, Hot Breads(woburn) and Ambassador of India(glastonbury).

This is the one which I am frequenting now. Very good collection of bakery items we get in India eg. puffs, pastries. Biriyani too is good and cheap.

Bakery items are good. But the above one has better biriyanis.

--> Bombay Tandoor Grill(Fitchburg)

Located in a rural locale. The buffet is cheap($8). Check out once.

This is the best vegetarian restaurant around. Prices are economical and there is a wide choice among tasty items.

Its a bit expensive, but very tasty food. Dont miss the buffet.

In September 2007 he was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer. He has fought back with phenomenal courage and humour. The average life expectancy of a patient with this disease is about an year for less than 26% of them. It has been 17 months and he is as cheerful and as healthy as ever, infact better than most of us.

Randy Pausch is a Professor of Computer Science and Human-computer interaction researcher at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the co-founder of Entertainment Technology Center of CMU and creator of Alice Software Project.

His videos 'Last lecture' and 'Time Management' have been downloaded more than a few million times and they are among the most watched ones on the youtube.

This celebrity has attracted lot of attention and was invited to the Oprah show too. Today he is an inspiration to all of us.

Two days ago, Steve Vinter gave a presentation at my school about various aspects and applications of Google. Among them, one of the striking was his demonstration of a new tool called Gapminder. Gapminder is a tool to present multi-dimensional data in a very beautiful way.

When you are dealing with lot of data, particularly complex ones; it is always a problem to present them in a way so that the audience understands them "easily". It reminded me of a particular lecture which I saw sometime ago, where Hans Rosling does an awesome presentation. As important as is the data; his presentation style is just amazing. Rosling believes that making information more accessible has the potential to change the quality of the information itself.

For a sample, look at how India's life expectancy has changed over years.

Orkut, Google and money $$$

Do you know about orkut? Ask this question to any of my 'friends' or 'friends of friends' or 'friends of friends of .....' and answer should not be a 'no'. The social networking sites like orkut, myspace, friendster, facebook, etcetera have become part of life for the "internet generation."

How these sites have ingrained themselves so well into the daily life of i-generation deserves a whole blog post; but now let me restrict myself to a different aspect/thought.

We all know about the business plan of Google. They first build a product or service that will gain popularity and then find ways to milk money out of it. They did this with Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, ...... We all know of the ads or 'Sponsored Links' that peek at us while reading an email in your Gmail; on the right column on search engine and other relevant places. The Sponsors pay Google to place their ads where there is a high probability that the viewer / audience is most likely to click on it.

Lot of websites use this opportunity and trade their real estate with Google for displaying ads; for money. As always, there are people who try to misuse this relationship. They try to copy content from other sites or bait with interesting/extremely profitable/exciting content just to garner visitors.

Here is the point: what will happen if Orkut allows users to place ads on their profiles or scrapbook? What sort of behavioural changes does it lead to?

Inorder to get more visitors, which will translate into more revenue; are users going to post more interesting stuff? Will photos in their albums become more stylish overnight? Will the personal details or hobbies or details on their profile be more "cool" and get more frequent updates?

Orkut already displays ads in communities. So whats next? In other words, question can be -where next?

Google has a popular analytics tool called Urchin; which allows you to capture almost entire data about visitors - their geographical location, visit time; duration; their journey through various pages, ip address, Operating System & Internet browser(and their versions)............. This data is very useful for the websites to plan the layout of the content and ads. Even Orkut uses the same tool.

Only two parameters are visible to users right now:

names of the last 5 visitors and
total number of visitors

Is Orkut going to make more of this data accessible to users so that they can analyze it and plan their content(read as profile or friends or photo album or scrapbook)? If answer is yes; then this would be one of the best ideas and moneyspinner for Google. Here Google just provides hosting space and monitors them; while the users create the content and they bring the visitors. As users bring in more friends and they sign up and start creating more content and visitors follow.......... a perfect case for 'viral marketing' and 'human engineering.'

Google will be just laughing on its way to the bank :)

As per the latest census, after the Fall 2006 admissions; there are about 25 friends from Engineering college here in USA.

Keeping in line with our routine chores and assignments, we guys are busy during the weekdays and usually use the weekends to talk to eachother and be informed. However, there is a particular 'ishtyle' in the way we converse.

A guy calls two or three of the friends and they inturn call another two/three, thus initiating a big conference-call rink. Now roll the amazing series of events. There are about 10 people in the conference call and you can hear about 10-15 "hello"s at an instant. You start wondering whether they are echoes or 10 differenct voice frequencies.

The confusion rules for about couple of minutes and then guys decide to bring some "order, order" and sense to the conversation. Fine, lets have turns in speaking. They chose one guy and ask him to 'Start.' But he has another doubt, who's next? This leads to another bout of arguments:
1) One comes up with the demand that he be accorded #5 as its his favorite number
2)'Folks, I want to talk last' decides another.
3)I want to talk next to .............................his call gets disconnected before he finishes. Attempts will be made to bring him back into loop. Etcetera........

Post 15 minutes, it appears as if there is some method in this madness. By the time the third guy is about to finish his share of news, autobiography and gossip; guy #7 breaks the loop and comments "Hey, you f_______, .......@#@......, a"; sparking off similar magnitude outbursts from others - another bout of clamouring ensues. Now all the steps repeat.

This way, the story continues for more than an hour and we finally get tired from all the fun we had and promiste to re-Play this again next week.

This telephone call lists among 'I am waiting for' lists of us.

'Rang de Basanti' is one of the contemporary movies that has caught the emotions and fantasies of the youth in a big way. 'Lage raho Munnai Bhai' has followed it, with its own humour flavour.

Professor gets Nobel prize :)

Professor Craig Mello of my University is a co-receipient of Nobel Prize for Medicine this year. He shares the honour along with Professor Andrew Fire of Stanford.

Today we were discussing about Genes and the methods for 'silencing' certain DNA strands. Suddenly Professor referred to the work done by Prof. Mello who was awarded Nobel this morning.

Their work has galvanised this domain. Today there are several pharmaceutical companies, Biotech startups that are working on this. It is to be noted that they are awarded just after 8 years of their work; which is pretty early ;) . Well, even they are surprised.

During class, the Professor exclaimed, ''Stanford bagged two Nobels, while we got only one. Lets beat them next time."

IIT Open course ware

In 2001, MIT brought a phenomenal change to the way knowledge is disseminated. It has launched Open Course Ware project. It contains educational material of undergraduate and graduate level courses. It aims to

*Provide free, searchable, access to MIT's course materials for educators, students, and self-learners around the world.

*Extend the reach and impact of MIT OCW and the "opencourseware" concept. Today there are around 1,400 courses published. New ones are being added and the existing ones are being improved with help of feedback.

Today we have Open Courseware Consortium, which is a collaboration of more than 100 Universities around the world. There are many Chinese Univs associated too.

India is yet to catch up on this idea in a big way - the idea of sharing the educational resources. On September 3, IITs' + IISc have started publishing their learning materials at NPTEL.
Lecture notes can be accessed from there and recorded classroom lectures will be added soon.

(looks like I am obsessed with birthdays, many photos on my blog and now this)

Emoticons were first used by Scott Fahlman. Just see how he is smiling in his webpage. He is now a Research Professor at Carnegie Mellon University. First smiley was born on September 19, 1982. Here is its birth message.

When using text-based online communication, we lack the body language or tone-of-voice cues that convey this information when we talk in person or on the phone. Various “joke markers” were suggested, and in the midst of that discussion it occurred to me that the character sequence :-) would be an elegant solution – one that could be handled by the ASCII-based computer terminals of the day. So I suggested that. In the same post, I also suggested the use of :-( to indicate that a message was meant to be taken seriously, though that symbol quickly evolved into a marker for displeasure, frustration, or anger.

On the evening of July 19th, we were busy making arrangements for Nandu's birthday party, recording messages from people dear to him and couldnot make it to the party.

Got his favorite cakes and invited all his friends.

There were just surprises and suprises for him. He went on opening one gift after another, ones which he wanted to own.

We're making arrangements for the past 10 days and enjoyed the pleasure of working on something which we like(in the lines of happiness is not a destination but the journey.)

At the end he said that its the best birthday party he ever had; further augmenting our joy.

These are the treasurable memories!!!

'Name' is one of the important features of a living creature. It is through it that the world recognizes each candidate, be it a person / doggy / God / a flower/ ...............

Two days ago had a conversation with a close buddy who was waging his relentless war against his pet-name or "pretty-name". We were friends for the past 5 years. He is all that you can expect in a good friend - funny, constant chatter, a freak at times, cares for friends(depends on his mood flings) and all those good things.

It was during Engineering days that he acquired this nickname that’s now bothering him. As he was from Anakapalli, people used to affectionately call him 'pedha palli' and his cousin brother got a similar one. He was a sport for all those years and never complained. He was always sought after at gatherings and his presence assured laughter.

God knows what went wrong after he landed in a foreign land. He started hating the guys who still refer to him by the pretty-name. Might be that he doesn’t find it masculine enough to attract ___ :). He's still in possession of that charming persona and we started wondering about 'what went wrong' with him / his name. hmmm

Reverting back to today, he has turned out to be hyper- allergic to his name, the one with which we used to refer to and still do. When we try to use his First name, we get a bit uncomfortable. It just doesn’t permit the same level of familiarity and fellowship. Even if friends call him in the unfamiliar way, as he ferociously craves; we will still use the nickname in his absence. He can be assured of that, for life.

Is there any way out for mana 'pedha palli' gaadu? Am not sure. Better way out would be to stop whining and accept that fact that he cannot escape from the history and affections associated with his name. In fact, he should be proud of it.

Motivation...

There was a young boy who used to come for regular practice but always played in the reserves and never made it to the soccer eleven. While he was practicing, his father used to sit at the far end, waiting for him.

The matches had started and for four days, he didn’t show up for practice or the quarter or semifinals. All of a sudden he showed up for the finals, went to the coach and said, “Coach, you have always kept me in the reserves and never let me play in the finals. But today, please let me play “The coach said "Son, I'm sorry, I can’t let you. There are better players than you and besides, it is the finals, the reputation of the school is at stake and I cannot take a chance. “The boy pleaded, let me play." The coach had never seen the boy plead like this before. He said "OK Son, go play. But remember, I am going against my better judgment and the reputation of the school is at stake. Don’t let me down."

The game started and the boy played like a house on fire. Every time he got the ball, he shot a goal. Needless to say, he was the best player and the star of the game, His team had a spectacular win.

When the game finished, the coach went up to him and said, "Son how could I have been so wrong in my life. I have never seen you play like this before. What happened? How did you play so well?" The boy replied, "Coach my father is watching me today." The coach turned around and looked at the place where the boy's father used to sit. There was no one there.
