IT Jobs - The Database Administrator

In the Information Technology world there are many options to pursue if one is looking for a solid and trustworthy career. One particular job specifically has proved being of great interest and is currently in dire need of more recruits. This IT job is that of a "Database Administrator" or for short, a DBA. Database administrators obviously work with databases, specifically database management systems software. The basic requirements of DBAs is to create databases, maintain them and write programs for database administration.

DBA Obligations
Responsibilities of database administrators differ upon many factors. Depending on one's specific DBA job description, the interwoven corporate and IT policies as well as the technical issues of Database Management Systems (or DBMS) one's duties can vary greatly. What is certain, duty wise, is that a few definite and necessary tasks need to be fulfilled by all DBAs. DBAs are often required to conduct operations including disaster recovery, performance analysis and tuning, data dictionary maintenance and some database design.

DBA obligations in clear cut form involve safeguarding and guaranteeing either a corporation's or organization's functional databases and coinciding applications that reach those databases, making sure to monitor both efficiency and functionality.

6 Required Tasks
Beyond the above obligations, DBAs are also responsible for 6 main tasks including issues of recoverability, integrity, security, availability, performance and development and testing support.

Recoverability here is done as a means to take precautionary action in case of major errors in terms of data entry, program bugs or overall hardware malfunctions. Performance from a DBAs point of view is simply a task of maintaining efficiency in online response times and workability between all other aspects tying into the database maintenance process. If performance problems arise, DBAs will examine SQL statements, table processes and overall system architecture, individually speaking. And lastly, the Development and Testing Support aspect for DBAs is a rather less important task, one involving the collecting of sample production data for testing new and/or altered programs, consulting with programmers about overall performance tuning and making certain table design modifications as to provide new means of storage for new program functions.

Prerequisite Action
Before actually heading out into the real IT working world as a DBA, one must get their Microsoft certification, or gain what is referred to as a Microsoft Certified Database Administrator certification or MCDBA for short. This involves going through various steps from training, to testing and actual certification attainment. It doesn't necessarily come easy, but in the long run, to become a successful, accelerated and respected DBA, one must have their MCDBA certification as validity to one's IT and specific DBA skills and capabilities. And once this is had, a DBA position can be acquired and the above responsibilities are then put into effect.
If one is serious about becoming a DBA, you must get certified. Before this though, consider Microsoft Training to push yourself ahead of other IT competition.

The Trouble with Job Forecasting
Every few weeks a business magazine, Internet site, or popular press publication produces an article forecasting the jobs and careers most in demand over the next year, few years, or even decade. The problem is that these predictions are based on current data and trends, and often rely on straight-line extrapolations of current employment data. Frequently demographic and technological information is incorporated into the equation. Additional projections and analysis may be performed but none of these techniques are particularly accurate for forecasting future conditions. This is because the "explosion" in technology means that many jobs that don't even exist today will represent major career opportunities in the future.

The Job and Career Situation
The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that today's graduates will have 10-14 jobs by the time they reach age 38! In the current workforce, only 25% of employees have been in their present job more than a year; while 50% have been there less than 5!

The top 10 "in-demand" jobs for 2010 did not even exist in 2004" (statistics from "Did You Know?" video created by Karl Fisch, Scott McLeod and Jeff Bronman, for Corinthian Colleges, Parthenon IV, 2009). Corinthian Colleges (which includes Everest Universities, Colleges and Institutes as well as WyoTech) says that they are "preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist...using technologies that haven't been invented"..."to solve problems we don't even know are problems yet." CCi (Corinthian Colleges, Inc.) has many initiatives to address these challenges, including technology, curriculum, modes of student contact and instructional interface. Most importantly, recognition of the challenge, a willingness to change, an investment in classroom technology, and a "can do" attitude pave the way to the future.

This is not to say that other firms and educational institutions do not share this vision of the future, or a willingness to change. But it is an example of a progressive and proactive approach.
How does One Prepare?

It's challenging to prepare for a future when there is so much uncertainty, and things are changing so rapidly. What is needed is not only a "skill set" but a "mindset." The technical skills you need to make a living in business, criminal justice, medical or legal fields are important, but given the rate of change, other abilities are at least of equal value.

You've probably guessed that one of the keys to success in the emerging environment is education. But education is not enough. You must have an attitude of openness, flexibility, and eagerness to learn, along with willingness, even desire, to embrace change. And, your education must be enriched with learning technologies, and approaches designed to engage the student and teach them to be a "lifelong learner." It must include technical skills, information technologies, interpersonal and communications skills. It must also incorporate planning, critical thinking and analytical skills. This is a good foundation for any career.

The hidden job market isn't going to come to you. So you have to go after it.
You may have heard of this term or maybe you haven't. But essentially it just means the jobs that are not advertised.

The jobs a hiring manager is thinking about, such as to replace a current employee because he/she may not be performing well, maybe someone is going back to school and will be leaving soon. It's also possible that the time is getting close for someone to retire. What about this one; business is going well and they are expanding their workforce and a position that never existed is been created as you read this article.

These scenarios are happening every minute somewhere at some company and those might be the perfect jobs for you. Yes, we see thousands of jobs advertised on known and large job boards, which I am not knocking down since some might be great opportunities. But also think that thousands of eyeballs have access to these advertisements and competition is fierce.

And remember that advertising cost money, it takes time not to forget the hundreds or sometimes thousands of resume submissions they may receive. After hiring managers and/or human resources specialists receive all these applications, now the fun starts.

What about this; After they have received all these want to be next employee credentials you show up (introduced by someone else, a phone call you made, in person, etc.) and are able to introduce and explain yourself. They get to know a real person that is telling the truth directly to them. Who do you think they are going to be inclined to choose?

To be able to achieve this you need to take some steps, start by combining the leads you've gotten from networking from your company research. Then create a list of companies and individuals you want to contact.

If you don't have a specific contact name, research until you get one. A good way of finding names is not to directly go to the gatekeeper but find a friendly sales professional at the company who would like to explain their products and/or services to you. Build a bit of raport and ask them to direct you the to the most appropriate person. Once you've compiled your list, call or email the contacts and request an informational interview.

An informational interview is a brief meeting between someone researching a career or industry and someone working in that career or industry. Remember those jobs are hidden and your interest might not be for an specific job but about the company and their functions.
At the beginning you might be nervous, prepare a simple script so you don't get flustered. If you do, don't worry it will pass with practice.

Explain that you want to learn about an industry, career or company and ask if the person has some time to talk with you.

Informational interviews may not always lead to a job, but they're generally time well-spent. You can get feedback on your skills and experience as well as make professional contacts. And, in the best cases,they can help you identify hidden jobs that haven't been advertised.

There are many people who are in a position where they are not happy with their current role of employment. They would love to be able to find alternative work but may be scared or unsure of how to proceed. This could be because they have worked for the same company for a large number of years and feel that they have lost touch with where to look for work or about the daunting task of attending an interview.

There are many places where people can go to in their quest to find alternative employment. If you are one of these people who have worked for the same company for quite a long time, you may actually be pleasantly surprised at the amount of help and opportunities that are out there. Most of the governments around the world are trying to help people to gain employment which helps them in turn to announce lower unemployment figures for their country.

Job centres
For many, the first port of call would be to go to their local job centre. In my opinion most of the vacancies that are available here are not for exactly well paid positions, however in general the staff are normally very friendly and helpful.

The internet
Since the birth of the internet there have been an increasing number of websites offering job finding services and many of the larger companies advertise their vacant positions on the web. If you have access to the internet this is a great place to look when attempting to find work and I know of many people who have found a new career in this way.

In the future, I think that the internet will become one of the main places to go to when looking for work. In the UK, job centre plus already has a superb website which means that in reality there should be no requirement to physically go to the job centre itself, as all of the vacancies it has are shown online.

Many of the websites offer a service where you can upload your c.v to their database. They can also offer a you a job alert system, this is where they e-mail people all of the new vacancies that suit their requirements. This of course saves you time as you therefore do not have to keep checking everyday.

Friends and family
It is also a good idea to ask friends and family if they know of anywhere that is looking for new recruits. This could even be at the company where they work. Many people find employment in this way.

Recruitment agencies
I think my personal favourite place to attempt to find work is via a recruitment agency. This is where they basically do all of the leg work for you. They basically contact people who are on their books with what they believe to be a suitable role and then set up the interviews as well. Recruitment agencies can also offer advice about how to write a professional looking c.v and advice about interview techniques.

There are many places where people can go to look for alternative work, therefore there is no need to be daunted by the whole process or to continue to be stuck in a dead end job.

Everybody remembers their first job. Maybe you flipped hamburgers as a student at the local burger joint. Maybe you delivered pizzas to the good citizens of your town. Maybe you bagged and carried out groceries at the local grocery store. There are tons of these types of student jobs out there.

Sites like Monster and CareerBuilder are certainly two of the most well known sites, but there are PLENTY more out there. And aside from the global sites, there are sites that are more regionalized for your area. Most local newspaper sites also have an online classified ads section, and some even have a separate section for job seekers.

There are many advantages to job-hunting using the Internet. Besides the obvious time saving, the other major upside is the amount of ‘territory’ you can cover. You can literally look for jobs ANYWHERE. You can find part time and full time jobs, temporary positions, contract work, shift work, and more. Whatever type of work you are looking for, you will be able to search for it, and more often than not, FIND IT!

Some of the job-hunting websites even have sections that allow you to post your resume or information about yourself, and potential employers will browse those listings when they are looking for help. That’s right, they come looking for you!

Let’s take these further. To enhance your career, hardworking, humility and honesty is essential. Hardworking is fairly straightforward. It just means nothing comes easy. Humility comes with maturity. When you know you do not know enough then you begin to be a student again. You will want to enhance your skills and knowledge, which will in turn enhance your career.

Do you conduct your work honestly? How do you deal with your colleagues? Is it with integrity? Do you admit to your mistakes and not blame anyone for it? Honesty isn’t just about dealing with others. 3. Action
So, you have a positive attitude and a positive awareness of yourself. But do you act upon them? If you do act upon them, do you do it at a pace that is right for you? Knowing the pace that is right for you is all about self-awareness.

There are two parts to this action, one is patience and the other persistence. Patience is about proceeding calmly or moving slowly with zero anticipation. No plans to enhance your career can be successful without solid action from your end. And solid action from your end means hard work.

Which is the other part of action, one that is persistent. One that is doing incessantly or progresses with dogged determination.

As you can see these are truly 3 simple strategic tips you can implement immediately that can positively enhance your career. Each is inter-related to another and feeds upon each other. If you can get it smoothly into motion there is no telling how far you can go.

Whenever he had a department meeting, you could always see he was nervous and tense, especially when he had to persuade us to accept a very challenging situation. There would always be a team member who would challenge this vice president in front of the group. To say the least, this did not go well for the employee who challenged him. However, I recognized the vice president’s weakness, never questioned him in public, and waited until the meeting was over and went to his office to discuss the challenging situations of the day. Behind our closed-door discussions, this same vice president was very open, conversational, and confident. We were able to create solutions for the company and when it came time for promotion to vice president, my name was at the top of the list.

Remember, to get what you want in your career, you must help your manager succeed. Focus on what is important to your manager and provide the solution. If customer service is important, speak with your manager in terms of creating customer solutions. If your manager is a numbers person, quantify all your results, etc.

3. Walk the TalkShow integrity in everything you do at work. Be the employee that management can depend on to get things done. When you prove you are an employee who consistently delivers on his/her promises, this will impress management and you will go to the top of the list for choice assignments and promotions. If you are someone who is known as undependable, you will lose the respect of management, and your opportunities for promotions will decrease.

Also, the employee with integrity owes up to his/her mistakes. The employee that doesn’t have the courage to own up to his or her mistakes and take responsibility is very frustrating for managers. If you make a mistake, do the following:

4. Take Risks and Grow RichThere are employees who do a good job everyday and do not advance in their careers. The employees who stretch themselves and their abilities are the ones who advance in their careers. Good job interview questions are the most indispensable and significant component of any job interview. You need to remain focused on the questions you pose. creativeness or efficiency and why?", "What do you know about our competition?". You must ask whatever type of questions you consider necessary.

From these questions, you will be able to ascertain the aspirant's nature, skills and other capabilities.

At the conclusion of the interview, you should ask appropriate questions from which you can assess the person's ability to work successfully in your group or team. Some examples of these questions are as follows: "Have you ever been dismissed or asked to resign from a company?", "What would your previous supervisor have to say regarding your job performance?", "How well do you perform under pressure?".

It may be possible to ask questions about future work, for example, "How will you motivate your colleagues?", "How will you plan to obtain higher positions in this company?", "How you will relate your work experience with the work you are given in this company?" and so on. First-rate questions are a key factor to a successful interview. Along with these questions, you must be able to highlight the important points you obtain from the answers given by the aspirant. This will assist you in making the final decision when choosing the successful aspirant for your company.
