Hey all, running a bit late this month, specifically because we had a bit of a tech nightmare that I’ve spent the last week and a half cleaning up.

Long story short, when I got this laptop after my previous one bricked itself, it was during the pandemic. I had a pretty strict budget, and prices for ram and video cards were on the rise thanks to the persistence and rise of NFTs, so my options were a laptop with better RAM/video card with a smaller internal hard drive OR one with a couple tb of hard drive space, but not necessarily powerful enough to accommodate how big and stupid I tend to work in photoshop. We went with the first option, and reasoned out that I have two external hard drives and that I could store my archives there, problem solved.

This problem only remains solved, however, if you actively make keeping the most up to date copies of everything on both drives. I was doing that consistently for years, but fell off when I was remastering everything for the website relaunch–a third of those files were on one drive, a third on the other, and a third was on my physical hard drive. This was something I did not think about until Parsnip parkoured up my desk, across it and then off of it before I could blink, and managed to kickflip my drive that I mainly work off of onto the floor. The back popped off of it, and while it didn’t look like there was any damage and the back popped back on easily enough, my laptop started having trouble recognizing it.

Cue three days of yakkity-sax-style panic scrambling as I ordered a new external drive while keeping the broken one connected (was afraid it might not reconnect if I shut my laptop down or disconnected it), only to receive that emergency replacement external drive and discover that it was 1)open and 2) clearly had been returned to amazon and then set right back to the warehouse where it could be sold to me, because it was built in a way that the contact for the cable were half covered by the plastic casing.

Sent that back, ordered a new one from a brand I trust more but was more expensive. It came, it was NOT broken right out of the box, and then I had to spend another three days transferring everything over because the broken drive was struggling.

Only when that was done did I actually get to work on the new chapter’s cover, which, alongside the new Vol. 05 cover, went up today! The meat of the new chapter will start next month, and it will be 6 pages long. I will be starting that today, and I am still…contemplating how I’m going to colour it. A large part of it is flashbacks, and I did want to try for a sort of horror look and vibe for most of this chapter, so the temptation to do the non-present day parts in black and white is very, very high. I should have enough time to figure out if that’s the finished look I want, and pivot to colour if it turns out not to be. Wish me luck!

MY CURRENT TO-DO LIST

Our sudden tech issues forced me to sort of re-tetris my to-do priorities. Here’s my current list:

• Start in on CH25 pages proper.
• Update the archives to properly list pages for the previous chapter, and include links/images for the newest volume and in-progress chapter.
• Update the characters page to include descriptions and portraits for new characters as they are added.
• Actually finish the design work for all of the humanoid characters in CH25 (almost done).
• Reformat the first ebook with the updated art and extras and find a home for it.

And here are things from last month that I have completed:

• Draw CH25 cover.
• Do the cover for Book 05!

The archives/character page updates are actually something I am going to get done just as soon as I hit post on this, so that should be done by this afternoon. It’s a long weekend and our kiddo is off to the cottage with the grandparents, so that means I will have some time to try and get back on track with the rest of that list that won’t be interrupted by play-by-plays of what’s happening in Tomodachi Life.

WHAT ARE WE UP TO

When the universe is throwing every stressful thing that it can at you while you are still trying to recover from ongoing medical issues, sometimes you just have to give in and re-create the cast of your webcomic in Tomodachi Life and watch them run around like a shitty little soap opera to unwind! Here are some wretched highlights from my island:

Some non-image highlights, because I guess the compromise for being able to create a character with a hand drawn butthole for the face is that Nintendo has forbidden any screencaps or videos from this game from being directly sent to phones or social media:

• Sam and Max got married and very quickly had the ugliest baby ever, because it gave her Sam’s tiny head and Max’s nose, making her look a little like a flesh coloured Squidward.
• Jack and Raine got married, and then over the course of two days, I watched her relationship status remain at Soulmates while his relationship status with her changed from Soulmates, to Making It Work to cutting to a movie sequence where they were both sitting at either end of their kitchen table, with him asking her for a divorce while she looks pretty crushed. WOW! I sent her on a ‘girl go find yourself’ solo vacation and she got over him super quick, while he wallowed and regretted his decision for the rest of the week.
• Just like in the comic, Noh has decided to independently fumble every potential relationship and friendship she has attempted to initiate, except for one with XIA, who doesn’t seem to like her all that much???
• Arjen had a ‘love at first sight’ movie sequence with Xia, who thinks of him as an acquaintance. I encouraged him to tell her about it because, surely, SURELY she would reject him and it would be funny for me to watch! He took her on a romantic Ferris wheel ride to confess, and just after he said he was in love with her, the camera zoomed out to reveal that fucking VICTOR was in the pod with them. I cannot stress enough that, at that point, Victor had never spoken to Xia even once–they were still listed as strangers to each other AFTER this event occurred. Despite this, Victor also declared his love for Xia. Understandably, she picked Arjen, who she had at least spoken to before. I saved a video clip, but, again, Nintendo says no.

And with today’s update, Chapter 24 is wrapped, and so is Volume 04! I cannot tell you all enough how excited I am to be working on Chapter 25, but I also need to take a minute to go over a small scheduling thing regarding next month’s update.

So, whenever we start a new book, we usually do a short recap chapter from one character’s POV as a framing device. They’re informative, set things up, check in with at least one character on what the general vibe is about current comic events and, most importantly, they wrap at around twelve to fifteen pages. Chapter 25 was supposed to be like this, but it sort of got away from us and will actually just be a normal sized chapter, that is currently, according to my thumbnails, going to end up being 44 pages total.

That amount of pages is a really long real-time commitment, so we are actually going to be upping the batch page/update count so we can get it all done in eight months. Bigger batches means more work, and more work means that I don’t actually think that I am going to be able to get the first 6 page batch done in time for next month’s update–I still have a bunch of important characters to design on top of the ones I have already done character sheets for, and I can’t even start the cover for CH25 without having that design work done. Instead, we’ll be taking a “break” in where we are going to post both the Vol. 05 cover and the chapter cover for CH25 in May on the 15th. I’ll still be working on actual pages the entire time, and my hope is that when June 15th rolls around, I’ll have the next batch done and the batch after it either mostly or completely done as well so I’m not rushing 24/7. Summer vacation is coming and I am always slower in the summer because we are parents and our kid is home, so I want to have at least a one month buffer in the can so I don’t burn out.

So, to reiterate, there will be an update next month, but it will just be the book cover and the chapter cover. Pages will resume in their normal format in June, and then batches are going to mostly be 6 or more pages for the next 8 months before we move on to Chapter 26.

• Do character design work for Bossy, Lancer and Snirt.
• Ink the final batch of pages for CH24.
• Colour the final batch of pages for CH24.
• Reformat the first ebook with the updated art and extras and find a home for it.
• Do the cover for Book 05!
• Chapter 25 planning with Shay
• Thumbnailing and storyboarding (like 50% done storyboarding) for chapter 25

Hey everyone! This past month has been slow. I had/am having a minor ongoing medical emergency, and while it is not currently affecting my ability to make comics, it was for a couple of weeks leading up to this post, so I am a bit behind where I would like to be.

Patrons did get to read this update early, but I no longer have that full month and a half buffer that was keeping the stress at bay, so right now I’m rushing to get the last batches of pages in this chapter done to remedy that. My hope is that I’ll get back on track pretty quickly, but I am still sorting medical stuff out so I also have that on my plate.

MY CURRENT TO-DO LIST

My previous to do list was pretty long, and now it’s a bit longer because I’m actually doing that final batch, so it made sense to break it down into the usual steps. I cannot tell y’all how excited I am to work on the next chapter, it is going to be extremely fun and satisfying for the both of us, and hopefully for readers, too.
