Process begins to replace Edwards

The Lethbridge College board of governors is hoping in the next two weeks to start the process of finding a replacement for Tracy Edwards as president and CEO.

The board wants to commission a search consultant to find a candidate for the position which becomes vacant June 30 – Edwards’ last day with the college.

Facebook may add to weight and body insecurity, according to a new study.

The study, released by the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt in Baltimore, asked 600 users of the social media site various questions about their use of Facebook and how it affects their self esteem and body image.

Strater Patrick shifts several non-functioning laptops onto a stack of boxes in his office at the Lethbridge courthouse. He’s getting ready to move out.

Despite the amount of technology packed into it, the office is quite roomy. It has a small indoor balcony that overlooks the courthouse entrance. Too bad it can’t be used since stacks of computer towers are taking up all the room.

It’s Monday morning at the Lethbridge College and students are filing into a lecture hall in the IB building on campus. Shelby Sawers enters the back of the hall, takes the bag off her lap and places it on the table closest to the door. From her bag she pulls out a laptop, a binder and a pen, carefully arranging them on the table in front of her.

A fellow classmate walks in and stops to talk. Sawers smiles and giggles as she attempts to recall what she did Saturday night. Class begins and Sawers leans forward in her wheel chair to get a better view.

Katimavik at risk: Future of youth volunteer program up in the air

Update: After this article was written, it was announced in the 2012 budget that FEDERAL government funding for Katimavik would in fact be cut off. As of March 31, 2013, funds will be discontinued and the program will cease to exist.

For Hamilton, Ont. native Rae Shirton, the opportunity to become a Katimavik volunteer was “a dream come true.” However, it is a dream that many Canadian youth may never get to fulfil.

Firefighters put their lives at risk on a daily basis, whether it is racing to put out a fire or rescuing people from dangerous situations.

But here in Lethbridge there is another kind of risk facing firefighters. False fire alarms, while not the deadly threat everyone expects them to be, have a hidden danger to them that not many are aware of.

Shortage of essential drugs continues across Alberta

The shortage of essential drugs in Alberta and across Canada, such as injectable painkillers, antibiotics, anesthetics and anti-nausea medications, continues.

The cause of the shortage lies in Quebec with a medical supply company called Sandoz Canada.

Recently, Sandoz released what was thought to be morphine. However, it was improperly packaged and sent to Toronto, where packages were discovered to be Isoproterenol Hydrochloride.

Students experience science excitement

On March 30 and 31 the University of Lethbridge will be home to the Lethbridge Regional Science Fair and Science Olympics.

The two events, known together as Sci-Fusion, are open to students from Grade 4 through Grade 12. This year, there are about 60 students involved from schools all across southwestern Alberta, all hoping to go on to the National Science Fair.

Chris Roedler, president of the Southern Alberta Technology Council, says Lethbridge has had some great success at the National Science Fair in the past.
