Going one step further, Kinzler and her team showed that an accent is more meaningful than race in signifying whether someone belongs in your social group. Replicating previous research, they found that under silent conditions children chose as potential friends children of the same race. Yet when the potential friends spoke, white children preferred a black child speaking with a native accent over a white child who spoke English with a foreign accent.

Why was accent more important than race? “Race, as a psychological category, may be relatively modern in terms of human evolution,” explains Kinzler, now at the University of Chicago. In prehistoric times, “a neighboring group might have sounded different even if they did not look different,” she says. Preference for our own race might have developed later, after the more ancient preference for our own accent.

They really work. My understanding of this marketplace is that it allows users to run different vendors’ cloud solutions inside Google Apps credential. Also, integrate their cloud solutions as gadgets/widgets inside Google apps.

Looks like Google is trying to collect all the online money making solutions into its own pocket! What a huge Google is coming …

Since I didn’t get the ABC or NBC signal, I decided to improve the original one. Here is the updated and portable version.

Please notice that I use a cardboard covered with aluminum foil as the reflector. I modified a paper clip (pointed by red arrow) to secure the antenna and the reflector.

Also, because the connection “wire” is much thicker, all the Vs are actually tilted forward, which seems like not affecting the signal strength.

The direction is really important! It is one reason I modified the original one to this portable version. With one direction, I got several extra channels: 20-1, 20-4, 32-1, 32-2, 32-4, 32-5, 36-1, 36-2, 36-3. However, I lost 5-1, which is CBS and comes back when I turn the antenna set. I still didn’t have 11-1 (NBC) and 7-1 (ABC). Will try during day time and see …

The other reason I modified my wire version is I was hoping to improve the signal by making the exact “clothes hangers” version. Because as shown in the commercial DB4 multi-directional HDTV antenna picture, the connection lines for the Vs are made of solid material not wire.

However, based on my test, changing the connection from thin wire into thick “clothes hangers” does NOT improve the signal. It suggests that only the Vs are the critical elements in receiving TV signal. Good night!

The oscar night motivated me to setup my HDTV. I got my 1080p HDTV sitting there just as the monitor for Wii – what a waste @#$% Since the cable service is expensive, I choose to use TV antenna to receive the free TV signals.

If it was ten years ago, I would go to a shop and buy one, maybe go to a library to check some reviews on different designs. But now, with google, I search! After some web reading, I decide to build one by myself. The reasons are:

• It is very easy and much cheaper to build one
• The quality of home-made version is better than some commercial ones
• I want the TV working right now; cannot wait for the shipping …

The first two hits on google about “how to DIY antenna HDTV” are http://www.tvantennaplans.com/ and http://uhfhdtvantenna.blogspot.com/. They use the same design – modified DB4. It is an very easy choice for me to follow them.

I made it in 3 hours, including 30-min walk/searching in the hardware store to get the BV-19 indoor VHF transformer. My version is the method described in the youtube video with some modification. The cost is $1.14 for the transformer, since I have all the other goodies. Starting from the scratch, all the material costs less than $10.

Here is the shopping list:

• 13 wood screws and 12 matched washers
• 4 metal clothes hangers
• 1 pierce of wood (2 1/2 – 3 foot)
• 1 VHF/UHF transformer, also called Balun
  
• some wire
• some tape
• 1 pin
• cable TV cable to connect the antenna to HDTV

Tools I used:

• ruler
• screwdriver
• knife
• pen/pencil for marking
• pliers with wire cutter
• solder and soldering ion

It is very simple to make. Just follow the youtube video embedded above. Instead of using cloth hangers to link the Vs, I used wire and some soldering. I put a screw on the back of the wood to help mount it to the wall. I use aluminum foil covered wall as my reflectors. Please notice that in the youtube video, the author didn’t put the reflectors. Using it significantly increases the signal.

Here is my very first working draft (easily get 18 channels, more than the 11 channels my friend gets in the same location with a commercial antenna)

Use http://www.antennaweb.org/, fake the antenna as multiple stories high, I estimate how many channel I should be able to get. Here is the result:

Preparation of Fab-QDs and tagging single EGFRs with the conjugate

AntiEGFR–Fab-biotin was produced by pepsin digestion of an anti-EGFR IgG (AB-11; clone 199.12, LabVision) followed by reduction of the resulting F(ab′)2 to yield a Fab′ fragment. The Fab′ was then conjugated with biotin through the unique -SH at its carboxy-terminal end. To prepare antiEGFR–Fab-QD conjugates, a solution of 0.7 nM antiEGFR–Fab-biotin in 1 ml of DMEM/F12 was added dropwise to 1 ml of 2 nM QD605-streptavidin conjugate (Invitrogen). Cell monolayers (50% confluent) previously serum starved for >1 h were incubated with 500 μl of the final antiEGFR–Fab-QD solution at 25 °C for ~2 min. The cells were then washed twice with PBS at 25 °C, placed in serum-free medium, and loaded onto the microscope stage at 37 °C in 5% CO2 for imaging.

Imaging system and analysis

Total internal reflection fluorescence microscope (TIRFM) imaging was performed using a Nikon Eclipse TE2000 inverted microscope with 100×/1.49NA Plan Apo objectives (Nikon). The sample was illuminated by the 488 nm line of a solid-state laser (Andor Technology) and images were acquired by the iXon back-illuminated EMCCD camera (Andor Technology). Individual trajectories of antiEGFR–Fab-QD were constructed by manual tracking plug-in in Image-J in parallel with the tracking module in Imaris (Bitplane). 10Hz, 100 ms per frame, not that fast.

Spatial control of EGF receptor activation by reversible dimerization on living cells.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a type I receptor tyrosine kinase, the deregulation of which has been implicated in a variety of human carcinomas. EGFR signalling is preceded by receptor dimerization, typically thought to result from a ligand-induced conformational change in the ectodomain that exposes a loop (dimerization arm) required for receptor association. Ligand binding may also trigger allosteric changes in the cytoplasmic domain of the receptor that is crucial for signalling. Despite these insights, ensemble-averaging approaches have not determined the precise mechanism of receptor activation in situ. Using quantum-dot-based optical tracking of single molecules combined with a novel time-dependent diffusivity analysis, here we present the dimerization dynamics of individual EGFRs on living cells. Before ligand addition, EGFRs spontaneously formed finite-lifetime dimers kinetically stabilized by their dimerization arms. The dimers were primed both for ligand binding and for signalling, such that after EGF addition they rapidly showed a very slow diffusivity state that correlated with activation. Although the kinetic stability of unliganded dimers was in principle sufficient for EGF-independent activation, ligand binding was still required for signalling. Interestingly, dimers were enriched in the cell periphery in an actin- and receptor-expression-dependent fashion, resulting in a peripheral enhancement of EGF-induced signalling that may enable polarized responses to growth factors.

I went to Heavenly last Saturday, with my Vado HD cam and, more importantly, a home-made attachment on my ski pack to mount the cam. With that design, I am able to video taping while skiing!!

Thanks for the El Niño. This season has been EPIC. It was not snowing on Friday, but the temperature was low. The snow was stayed in powder status and waiting for me… It was cloudy and a little snowing after lunch. Anyway, the snow condition was great!

I went up and had my first couple runs below the Powderbowl express, along Powder Line and Fall Line. Then, I took the Canyon Express and had couple runs at High Roller. The Sky Express took me to the top of the mountain (the lifting process was taped and in the first part of the video). I dropped down to the Nevada side through Skyline Trail, Milky Way, Dipper Woods and Galaxy. Following tips from http://www.tahoestash.com/, I had a great time in Galaxy Woods, where I had my footprints over the untouched powder and was able to capture the moment I fell into and buried in the fresh snow (in the first part of the video, around 9′). After having several runs at Aries Woods and Little Dipper, I had my lunch in the East Peak Lodge. It started snowing in the afternoon, and I spent most of the time over the California side. Through Sky Express, I had great runs at Ellie’s and Pinnacles, which were newly groomed, and of course the woods between them!

The video was captured at 30 frames per second. Processing with Sony Vegas. I had to export the video as 60 frames per second to make it look “smooth”. Youtube only allows 10′ per upload. I have divide it into to two: Part I includes Sky Express ride, Pinnacles run, Galaxy life and the fall; Part II starts from the fall and has my tree skiing in Galaxy Woods. Enjoy!

Initially, I encoded the video as 30 frames per second, which is the one below. As you can see, it is pretty jumpy. Do I need to buy a high-speed cam for my next skiing trip? $@$@$@$@

Of course, log out the current the user is the easiest way to delete all cached credential of shared network. However, when you don’t the condition to perform a logout, net use * \d becomes handy!

The IPC$ share is used with temporary connections between clients and servers by using named pipes for communication among network programs. It is primarily used for to remotely administer network servers. I tried to use net use z: \\ServerName\$IPC /delete, but got error message – the solution from google search is “I have to logoff”! Any suggestion? Windows right-click trick did not work – I cannot find the “Stop sharing” item …
