You and I are a precious miracle. Simply to be alive, right now, breathing, in and out, in and out…for this, the true warrior is grateful. Consider these miraculous facts:

• Your heart is a fantastic pump that beats about 100,000 times every 24 hours, pumping approximately 5,000 gallons of blood per day through 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Three million red blood cells are created every second of the day to replenish this blood. Your heart will beat about 3 billion times over your life without a break. Not one minute of rest or recovery.

• Every second, 100,000 chemical reactions take place in every cell of your body. Now, multiply 100,000 chemical reactions by the 70 to 100 trillion cells that make up your body. This mind-boggling number is the number of chemical reactions that take place inside of you every second.

• The DNA in the nucleus of one human cell is a thread that measures two yards by ten atoms…a billion times longer than it is wide. Two yards of this DNA packs into each cell by coiling itself endlessly on itself. If there are 70 trillion cells in your body, unwound, that string could stretch to the sun and back 400 times.

You and I are lucky to be alive, right now. If we can do all of this without even trying, just think of what we are capable of.

Warrior On!

Favorite Endorphin Warrior product?

“Favorite product is the Warrior Training Bracelet. I literally wear it every day and not just for training. It’s a little reminder that when things start to suck you just need to embrace the suck and then kick it in the butt. That goes for training, racing and everyday life. It’s like a little affirmation on my wrist that reminds me how strong I am (mine says ‘STRENGTH’). It becomes a piece of you…you train in it…you sweat in it…it’s part of your journey.”

How did you get so heavy?

“Growing up I was always thin, but I wasn’t really physically active. When I became an adult, I started a real job, sat on my rear all day and I started putting on weight. I simply didn’t know how to eat correctly. By the time I got married I weighed 230 lbs. In 2001, I tried a restrictive 800-calorie-a-day diet and lost 50 lbs in less than a month, but then later gained back the weight I’d lost, plus soon was up to 315 lbs. After attempting diet after diet, I came to believe that maybe I was just meant to be fat.”

What was the turning point for you?

“Twelve years later, two things happened. Our 4 year old black lab died suddenly and I realized that the same thing could happen to me. Also, we were invited to a wedding on a cruise ship and so I was confronted with the possibility that I was going to have to wear a bathing suit. I hired a personal trainer and within 6 months, everything started to change. It became less about vanity and all about being healthy and seeing how far I could push myself. I learned that our bodies are very forgiving, which motivated me even more because I was able to do things I was never able to do before….and never imagined I would ever do.”

What’s the key to losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight?

“I worked my butt off, literally, for 6 months, but I was not seeing the results I thought I should have been seeing. I realized that although I was working hard, I was not fueling my body with the right foods or enough food. I was addicted to diet food basically, low fat, no fat processed foods. If it came in a box and said it was good for me — I ate it because I didn’t know any better. I picked up a copy of Tosca Reno’s Clean Eating and it literally changed my life. Eating is 80% of the equation. Working out is important, but if you’re not eating right, you won’t see the results you want.”

How has regular, vigorous exercise changed your life?

“People often ask me if I think I will ever be big again. The answer to that would be — no! This isn’t some crazy diet I went on, it’s my lifestyle now. If I don’t get a workout in I feel tired and cranky. It makes me feel good and not to mention, I rarely get sick which is another bonus.”

What have you learned about yourself through this process?

“I’ve learned that I’m not perfect. I have my bad days and eat cookies. But it’s how I handle myself after that happens that defines who I have become as a person now. I don’t beat myself up, I move on. I never deprive myself of things either. I love movie popcorn so I eat it once in awhile. The most important thing I’ve learned is that results are not guaranteed…they are earned!”

What are your goals for the future?

“LOL, this could be a long list. I really want to continue to inspire others to make healthy changes in their life…to educate them that you don’t need ‘diets’ or weird gimmicks. To be honest, if there was a way to take down the ‘diet’ industry, I’d love to see it fall. I eventually want to be doing this type of work full time. I’m really big on workplace wellness, as well as working with individual people, so I could see myself doing something with that. Basically, I want to reach as many people as possible and get the word out that change is possible.”

Thank you Brenda. Warrior On!

Hi everyone. This is from Eric Jenican, founder and managing general partner of Endorphin Warrior. While reflecting on Thanksgiving this week and all that I personally have to be grateful for, one thing that came to mind is my recognition that the best part of Endorphin Warrior is the connection we have with you…our customers and supporters. Through our brand, we’re sharing our love of running and training, striving to be the best we can be, and facing life and it’s joys and challenges head on. So I just want to express how special this all is to me – our society of Endorphin Warriors – sharing this journey of life together.

Throughout the year, many of you have shared your stories with us – your incredible challenges, attitudes, strength and accomplishments – and words really cannot express how much you inspire me. Still, others have shared your wisdom, thoughts or creativity on our blog, or posted on our Facebook Fanpage. Your participation and caring to share is so very much appreciated. My view is we’re all here to help each other on this journey of life, and I feel extremely fortunate and grateful for this “society of warriors” that has come together through Endorphin Warrior. So, on this Thanksgiving eve, I want to thank you all for your support, patronage and connection…and with the deepest sense of gratitude wish all of you a happy Thanksgiving 2011.

What “mind strategies” do you use to get yourself to workout on those days when you just don’t feel like it?

1. I think of my son, who’s a soldier with the U.S. Army. He’s currently deployed to Iraq. He doesn’t get days off…he’s over there protecting our country 24/7 so that I can have the freedom to run. This gets me every time. (Shared by: Vivian)

2. I picture my competition out there training. (Shared by: Pete)

3. I think about the long-term goal (to stay healthy) and short-term goals (races near and far). I also know that I will feel better after I run. (Shared by: Erik)

4. I have pictures of goals I want to meet by my alarm clock. I also will record a message to myself on my phone and use it as my alarm. Sometimes I take the hardcore approach and tell myself to get my butt out of bed because I know I’ll regret it later if I don’t. (Shared by: Jessica)

5. I tell myself I’ll just run for 30 minutes. After all, it’s only 30 minutes. Of course, by the time 30 minutes is up, I inevitably go for longer! (Shared by: Julia)

6. Set a goal of training for a specific event that costs money and let others know you’ve signed up. Once you’ve put some cash on the line, it helps you realize you can’t procrastinate. (Shared by: Dawn)

7. Even though I’m not a morning person, I get out of bed at 5:30 a.m. and before I can even think about what time it is, I step into my running clothes and head out the door. By the time my brain registers the shock, I’m out on the street. The added bonus is that I have a sense of accomplishment and well-being all day long. (Shared by: Lori)

8. I think about the fact that I don’t HAVE to get out and run; I GET to go for a run (That’s a quote from a fellow athlete who was killed in the line of duty a couple of months ago; he was a Sheriff in our area). (Shared by: Erik)

9. On the really bad days, I tell myself that I just have to put workout clothes on and that I don’t have to do anything once I get there. I could just stretch the whole time if I want. Once I’m dressed and there I find that – at that point – I may as well workout. Then, I tell myself I only have to do the sets I like. And then, once I’m going, I decide I may as well do all of it. So it works to give myself “permission” to slack. There’s only been twice that I actually only stretched the whole time. And even then I felt great after. (Shared by: LDW)

10. I find that if I do my workouts early in the morning, I am the most energetic and then other things during the day don’t distract me. I also reward myself later in the day with something special, which motivates me to workout even when I just don’t feel like it. (Shared by: Gregg)

11. I think about my mother who is in a wheelchair and battling cancer. She is my inspiration. (Shared by: Mary)

12. Although the saying, “No pain, no gain,” may be worn out, it has a deeper meaning. It means that the more we put in to our goals (running), the more we get out. Nobody likes pain, but the more pain you feel when running, the easier it is to fight it on your next run. That’s what encourages me to push it when it’s so easy to just slow down. (Shared by: J.R.)

13. I keep my workouts recorded in a huge day planner, left open and in plain view. On days when I’m not feeling it, I take an honest look at the past few weeks and see if I really need a break, or if I’m just wimping out. If I need a break, I take it without guilt. If not, I look at how far I’ve come over the past calendar year (it’s all there) and remember how strong this work makes me feel. No amount of whine can outweigh the gifts that fitness brings! (Shared by: Tammy D.)

14. I used to weigh 405 lbs. and now weigh 175. For the last three years I’ve been doing triathlons, half marathons and other endurance events. I train because I can and for years my body was not able to do what it is able to do now. I am blessed to be able to push myself further and harder. I document all of my training and event times for comparison purposes. I like to see my progress over time. (Shared by: Patricia M.)

15. Make no excuses and you will have no regrets. Just get out there and do it even when you feel you can’t and the rest of your day will be better. This is the mantra I now live by. It gets me out of bed at 4:30 a.m. to run and workout before work AND sets me up for the rest of the day. At least if nothing else goes right during the day, I know I have accomplished ONE of my daily goals…and probably the most important. (Shared by: Mel)

16. I feel way too guilty if I miss more than two days in a row of working out. It’s in my DNA and staying fit has been with me since the first time I went sledding all day as a kid or body surfed until I could hardly breathe or stand. (Shared by: Dean)

17. I am a certified personal trainer and fitness is very important to me. My health is of paramount concern and I always tell my clients to workout like you brush your teeth regularly, or bathe for that matter. Just do it. Make it a part of your daily habits. Schedule it in your daily planner. So when I don’t feel like working out, I just know that I will feel better…and it is a major part of my daily routine. (Shared by: Pat)

18. I’m rarely sorry I worked out. I’m nearly always sorry if I skipped it. I try to remember that. (Shared by: LCW)

19. On those days when I’m dragging and don’t feel like “cranking it up,” I remind myself how good I’ll feel once my body is warmed up and how good I’ll feel afterward. This “good feeling” is so strongly stored in my brain, it gets me out the door every time (well, almost every time). (Shared by: Eric)

Bio info

Name: Robbin Lorenz
Endorphin Warrior customer since: 2009
Career and interests: Personal training, cycling coach and competitive cyclist
Age: 48
Married: Amy Lorenz
Children: 4 children – 2 girls and 2 boys
City of residence: St. Petersburg, FL

Favorite Endorphin Warrior product?

“I wear a RELENTLESS Warrior Training Bracelet. The times that I am worn out and wondering why I am doing this, I will look down and see the word ‘relentless’ around my wrist and it reminds me that I am a relentless warrior and being tired and worn out is just part of getting stronger.”

Current athletic goal

Complete the 2012 Race Across America (RAAM) - the annual transcontinental bike race from the west coast to the east coast of the USA - in under 10 days. “I’m hoping that finishing in under 10 days will be a top-3 finish,” says Robbin. RAAM is considered the greatest endurance cycling event in the world. It’s one continual race (not a stage race): 3,000 miles, across 12 states, with over 170,000 feet of vertical climbing.

When did you get into cycling?

“In 1996, I started cycling to lose weight. I bought a bike at a garage sale and fell in love with cycling. By 2002, I was training with the purpose of becoming a competitive cyclist. In 2007, I became certified with USA Cycling as a coach with a desire to help motivate other people to get on their bikes and ride.”

Why RAAM?

“It’s a race of ordinary guys who have a passion for cycling and the desire to push their limits. One thing I’ve learned through my training and racing is that you can always push more…you can always go farther. Your ‘can-do’ is always stronger than your ‘want-to.’ When your body wants to stop, that’s when you have to trust your training and push on.”

With the 2012 race about one year away, what is your training like now?

“When I decided to do RAAM, I hired a coach. Being a coach myself, I understand the value of having someone other than yourself to evaluate where you are. I don’t believe a person can truly ‘self-evaluate.’ You need someone that will be honest and have a desire to help you complete your goals. For training, right now I get up at 4:30 each morning to get my training in before work and then do longer rides on the weekends. On Fridays after work, I ride through the night and into the next day. My wife follows behind me in the car and is my support crew. I would not even attempt this without her.”

Why spend so many hours on a bike?

“First off, I love training. Training is a sport in itself. Also, I love the solitude. For me, there is nothing like spending hours and hours on the bike with just my own thoughts. You can find out a lot about yourself when you train for an event like RAAM. It will test who you are and what you are made of, that is for sure.”

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned about yourself through cycling?

“I’ve learned that I have a lot more ability than I once thought. I’ve learned that there’s a lot more to me…and I have a lot to give. Learning this has inspired me to give more of myself to others…and this is the legacy I want to leave for my children. Being an endurance athlete, there is an element of selfishness that you must have, so you really have to take time to focus on others and keep reminding yourself that the world doesn’t exist just as your personal training ground. I have a wife and children that need and depend on a husband and a dad, not an athlete that lives in the same space. This keeps me honest and always aware of how great it is to have people in my life that love me and makes me want to be a better husband, father, friend and friend to strangers that need friends too.”

11. I feel way too guilty if I miss more than two days in a row of working out. It’s in my DNA and staying fit has been with me since the first time I went sledding all day as a kid or body surfed until I could hardly breathe or stand. (Shared by: Dean)

13. I’m rarely sorry I worked out. I’m nearly always sorry if I skipped it. I try to remember that. (Shared by: LCW)
