Start thinking about ways you can save!
Students in grades 6 through 12 will be visiting every home in Rothsay on Monday, October 24, from 2:00 p.m. into the evening to ask for each resident's pledge to voluntarily reduce energy use in their homes throughout 2012.

The Energy Pledge includes suggestions that, when followed, will help residents reduce energy use and potentially save money!

If you aren’t available on October 24, the students will leave the packet of information at your home. Please review the pledge and return it by November 30 in the envelope provided or to Rothsay Public School (attention Colleen Brandt). We hope for 100 percent participation in the Energy Challenge. So we look forward to seeing what you can do through your Energy Pledge! If you have any questions, please contact Otter Tail Power Company's Idea Center at 800-493-3299.

Rothsay, Minnesota, is on track to exceed energy-savings goal.
On April 19, 2011, Otter Tail Power Company celebrated with the University of Minnesota, Crookston, and the community of Rothsay, Minnesota, as the company announced preliminary energy savings associated with the Campus and Community Energy Challenges. In 2010 the University of Minnesota, Crookston, achieved metered kilowatt-hour savings of approximately 7 to 8 percent. From early 2009 through early 2011 Rothsay achieved metered kilowatt-hour savings of approximately 3 percent. When all technology improvements and behavioral change initiatives have been in place for a full year, and when results are adjusted for changes in weather and normally occurring growth, the University of Minnesota, Crookston, is on track to save 17 percent of its prior electricity use. Rothsay is on track to save more than 19 percent. The goals of these challenges are based on sustained savings over a five-year period. Pending regulatory review and approval that means the campus and town are on track to surpass their energy-savings goals.

“We launched these challenges with a call to imagine all of the residents of a small rural community and all the students, faculty, and staff of a college campus working together to reduce the electricity use of their entire town and campus each by 10 to 15 percent,” said Kim Pederson, Otter Tail Power Company Manager, Market Planning. “What they’ve accomplished so far was more than we imagined possible but the hard work is still in front of them as they strike out on their own to sustain these savings.”

The Crookston campus achieved much of its savings from upgrading campus lighting and installing automated controls on variable-frequency drives for some of the ventilation systems. Otter Tail Power Company assisted with the audits to identify high-level savings projects and provided more than $86,000 in grants and rebates to encourage the investments by reducing payback times.

“Significant savings also were noted when the Facilities Management Department implemented a new work order system in August that took deliberate steps to change operational procedures such as shutting off more lights than before, closing shades, and reducing heating levels in certain areas,” said Chancellor Charles Casey. “I’m proud but not surprised about just how much the people on this campus have been able to accomplish. And I’m confident that the behavior changes we’ve been focused on will continue to show real results.”

The community of Rothsay achieved more than half of its cumulative savings from behavioral changes on the part of Rothsay Public School, homeowners, and businesses. Otter Tail Power Company also granted almost $117,000 in rebates for energy-efficient lighting and technology improvements. “This program was developed as a three-legged stool,” said Pederson. “Education, efficient end-use technologies, and incentivized behavioral changes each play a critical role in the success of these projects. And achieving long-term savings in Rothsay will be possible only with ongoing energy-saving behaviors and a community that won’t settle for anything less than achieving its goal.”

Rothsay Public School is committed to continuing its leadership role in this challenge. “The Community Energy Challenge has been an excellent program that has brought a new sense of awareness regarding energy use throughout the community,” said Ehren Zimmerman, Dean of Students/Principal at Rothsay Public School. “And it has brought a new approach to hands-on learning for our faculty, staff, and students. Now it’s our turn to pay it forward and keep the savings going.”

2010 savings report coming in April!

2010 has come and gone and we all want to know what Rothsay, Minnesota, has accomplished in terms of energy savings!
From January 2010 through August 2010, we reported the exciting energy-savings results that Rothsay School had seen due to its commitment to energy efficiency. We've provided (in the "News" section of this web site) charts that compare 2010 energy use with 2009 energy use to help paint a savings picture. But those charts don't reflect savings associated with lighting retrofits or technology upgrades or replacements (they are savings that result from behavioral changes only). Nor do they take into consideration increased energy use that resulted from installing those technologies during times when the school typically would be closed. So now it's time to take all those factors into consideration and "normalize" the numbers to determine where Rothsay School is in terms of total energy savings.

We also must go through the same "normalization" process for the Community of Rothsay. We'll look at cumulative energy-use change and the various factors that contributed to that change to determine whether the community is on track for reaching its goal of 10 percent to 15 percent energy savings.

We'll complete this review process by April. And we look forward to sharing the results! Stay tuned...

Rothsay family uses sun to heat home

After reviewing multiple applications from Rothsay homeowners, and inspecting multiple homes for suitability, we’ve partnered with Chris Buckingham’s family and RREAL to measure the electricity savings associated with solar air heat.
When it comes to capturing energy from the sun, many people envision solar panels, which are about 18 percent efficient. That means that they convert about 18 percent of available energy to heat.

In our quest for energy savings, we’re learning more about solar air heat, such as can be obtained through the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance’s (RREAL) solar-powered furnaces. These furnaces can be 60-percent efficient!

We want to find out what this technology could mean to Rothsay homeowners in terms of potential energy savings and how it could help residents meet the Community Energy Challenge goal.

Details

This pilot project will include a solar air heating system composed of two 4-foot by 6.5-foot collectors.

RREAL anticipates that these collectors will generate about 2,050 kilowatt hours of electricity per heating season to warm the Buckingham home.

While a residential solar electric system can cost $25,000 before tax incentives and rebates, a solar heating system similar to our pilot system will cost closer to $5,000 before tax incentives and rebates.

Minnesota currently has a rebate available through the Office of Energy Security-Department of Commerce for $25 per square foot of collector installed. And residential customers also may qualify for a federal tax credit of 30 percent of installed cost. That means that you have the potential to install a $5,000 system for a little over $2,000!

Check back for future news stories about this pilot project to see if solar air heat is an option for energy savings at your home. Or visit the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance online to learn more.

About RREAL

The Rural Renewable Energy Alliance RREAL began in 2000 as a nonprofit organization that installs solar air heating systems as a long-term energy- and money-saving solution. While the reduction of fuel poverty remains RREAL’s central mission, the organization now manufactures solar air heat collectors, which may prove one of the more widely used and economically logical choices for solar energy.

Home Energy Makeover activities selected

Otter Tail Power Company shares Home Energy Makeover package with two winners for greatest potential savings.
Jeanette Geer
In June 2010 members of Otter Tail Power Company’s Community Energy Challenge team visited Jeanette Geer to share the news that her home had been identified as having energy-savings potential and to announce that she had been selected as the recipient of a home energy makeover.

Thanks to her commitment to energy savings—and to helping Rothsay meet its Energy Challenge goal—Jeanette had implemented fabulous energy-saving measures in the time between receiving her energy audit and being selected as the makeover winner. Way to go, Jeanette! That means that we can help put the finishing touches on Jeanette’s remaining energy-savings potential and help another Rothsay homeowner reach similar goals.

Because Jeanette took the initiative to seek out other incentives available for energy-efficiency improvements, she was able to put a huge dent in savings potential with:

Insulation.

A new boiler.

A water heater that will be placed on off-peak service.

A more efficient refrigerator and freezer.

Otter Tail Power Company hopes to help Jeanette reach her savings potential through energy-efficient appliances such as:

An Energy Star washer and an efficient dryer.

An efficient oven/range.

An Energy Star dehumidifier.

An efficient air conditioner.

Nicole Oien
You can about imagine Nicole Oien’s surprise and excitement when we visited her in September to announce that she would now be able to take advantage of Energy Challenge makeover funds to improve the energy efficiency of her home.

Thanks to Community Energy Challenge incentives and other energy-efficiency programs, Nicole’s home is targeted to receive improvements such as:

Insulation.

Ventilation.

Efficient lighting.

Efficient off-peak heating and cooling.

One makeover fund makes for two happy homeowners
With one home energy makeover fund of about $12,000, Otter Tail Power Company was able to partner with two dedicated homeowners committed to using all available resources for maximizing energy efficiency. What a way to meet the Community Energy Challenge goal together!

We plan to complete all home energy makeover activity by the end of 2010.

Rothsay School shows increase in energy use due to installation projects
While Rothsay School shows an increase in its energy use this month, it's important to know that a lot of work is taking place at the school to install new energy-efficient electric technologies. That means that lights are on and drills are running when the school typically would be much more quiet. So even though we see an increase in use this month, Rothsay School is well on its way to overall savings!

Otter Tail Power Company announces home energy makeover winner

Rothsay homeowner Jeanette Geer to receive a free home energy makeover valued at $12,000.
As part of our Community Energy Challenge in Rothsay, Minnesota, Otter Tail Power Company has selected one homeowner to receive a free home energy makeover valued at $12,000. On June 2 members our Community Energy Challenge team visited winning homeowner Jeanette Geer to announce that she is the winner.

“This makeover will be similar to the home makeovers you see on TV except that ours will focus on making the Geer home more energy efficient to help achieve the Community Energy Challenge goal of saving between 10 percent and 15 percent of Rothsay’s energy use,” said Senior Market Planning Specialist Brenda Sandahl.

Geer was selected from among 27 applicants, who had to sign Rothsay’s Energy Pledge and complete a free home energy audit to be eligible to win the makeover.

“Now we’ll do a review audit to determine which energy-efficiency measures will be most cost-effective for the Geer home,” said Sandahl. She indicated that those measures probably would include wall and rim joist insulation, door replacement, and a new heating system to help lower the home’s high energy index, which was one of the determining factors in its selection.

“Our plan is to have the work completed in time for the next heating season,” said Sandahl. “Then we’ll monitor and study the home for energy savings, followed by five years of verification. Otter Tail Power Company likely will use the Geer home as a case study.”

Rothsay school is on track to reach Community Energy Challenge goal!
Jana Emery, Otter Tail Power Company Program Specialist, gave a presentation May 24 at the Rothsay School to highlight the savings that the school has achieved as part of the Community Energy Challenge. Since January, the school has reduced its monthly electrical use on average by 10 percent compared with 2009 monthly kilowatt-hour use.

After the presentation the students delivered an Energy Challenge mouse pad to every home in town reminding the rest of Rothsay about the Energy Challenge and to provide residents with a constant prompt to use this web site as their one stop for all things Energy Challenge. Students, faculty, and staff then enjoyed ice cream treats on the playground to celebrate their savings.

To wrap up the day Emery also made a presentation at the school’s PRIDE (People Recognizing Individuals Dedicated to Excellence) Night awards ceremony. During the ceremony Emery recognized the 14 students and 2 teachers on the Students for Community Energy Challenge team with a plaque for their energy-saving efforts. Hillary Johnson and Max Boyce, the two seniors on the team, each received a $250 scholarship.

Otter Tail Power Company is looking to partner with one Rothsay homeowner through FREE solar panel installation and energy-savings measurement.
Did you know that solar air heat is among the most efficient and cost-competitive solar technologies for our region?

That’s right. And Otter Tail Power Company is interested in learning more about how solar power could help Rothsay residents meet the Community Energy Challenge goal of reducing energy use by 10 percent to 15 percent. We’re looking for one homeowner to partner with us in exploring this technology.

If you’d like to be that partner, keep reading!

Qualifications

To qualify for this opportunity you must:

Own your home, which must be served by Otter Tail Power Company. Home must be of solid construction and have an unshaded south-facing wall that's at least 8’ x 8’.

Have a common living area or daytime-use space adjacent to the south-facing wall.

Heat your home with electricity or receive residential demand control service.

Have completed your home energy audit prior to the audit deadline.

We’ll select one Rothsay homeowner to partner with us in this project. If you’d like to be that partner, express your interest by June 7, 2010!

Additional points of interest

Solar air heat has the greatest return on investment and potentially will last longer than other measures, aside from weatherization projects. That means you can save on your energy bills farther into the future.

Solar air heat is used primarily for direct supplemental space heating. These systems provide heat by recirculating conditioned air through solar collectors. And they directly displace some of the duty on a conventional forced-air furnace. Solar air heat systems are simple to operate with few moving parts. Solar air heat panels are mounted on the side of your structure and circulate air to and from the building through the collector(s) using conventional, off-the-shelf, HVAC controls, sizing methods, and air distribution and handling equipment. Simple controls activate the fan when the home needs heat and when heat is available to harvest.
