Assurance

Many true children of God live their lives in fear of being eternally rejected by their Father. This insecurity robs the Christian of his peace, happiness, and productivity while at the same time robbing God of His glory. It is possible to know that we are God’s children, and by that fact have assurance that He will not forsake us. The fundamental premise of this study is that we have security not because of our own performance but because we are His children. In his first letter, the apostle John gave us several characteristics of those born of God, and assessing these in our lives should lead to the assurance necessary to live a life to His honor and glory. Danny Hale presents these six lessons.

Christ Our Comfort

One of the most beautiful and memorable expressions of the glory and blessing of our redemption in Christ is contained in the first question of the Heidelberg Catechism: "What is thy only comfort in life and death? That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ; who, with his precious blood, has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him."

The Heidelberg Catechism was published in 1563, written by two young men still in their twenties: Kaspar Olevianus and Zacharias Ursinus, in the hope of providing a basis for unity between the Reformed and Lutheran churches in Germany. It still speaks to the current age the message of the wonder and glory of the gospel of grace, in language that itself is gracious and encourages believers to put aside their sectarian and fractious spirit and unite on the basis of the great spiritual blessings and promises we have in Christ.

Engedi Ministries is pleased to offer this series, its title derived from the first question and itself an analysis of the Heidelberg Catechism, with an explanation in terms understandable to twenty-first century Christians, with the same desire and prayer, that we may join hands and hearts together in the shadow of the cross and, as needy sinners who bring nothing of merit, accept with humility the salvation of Christ. Church History, Part 1: The Classical Background of Christianity

Jesus was born in what the apostle Paul called “the fullness of times.” Palestine at the time of the birth of Christ existed under the rule of Rome but was immersed in a Greek-speaking culture that we call Hellenistic. It is extremely interesting and significant that there is no time in the history of the world when we can define a culture that so closely resembles our own as the world into which Jesus was born. The Hellenistic world was big business, big government, big entertainment. It was a time of high level social activities, affluent life styles, and the development of science and technology. New ideas, philosophies, and religions abounded. Understanding the Hellenistic/Roman world may be much more than an exercise in history; it may give us important insights into how the church of Jesus Christ may relate to the world with which it has to do! (Dr. Lawrence presents a study of church history in five parts and a total of 54 lessons. These six lessons comprise part 1.)
