Englishman Isaac Hayden, Republic of Ireland international central defender Ciaran Clark and Northern Ireland left-back Jamal Lewis were the three players cut from the new Premier League squad at Newcastle United to accommodate the new players. The Magpies signed five players during the aforementioned winter transfer window. The new players are Brazil international Bruno Guimares, Englishman Matt Targett, New Zealand international striker Chris Wood, English utility defender Dan Burn and England international Kieran Trippier.

Trippier was the first signing after he joined from Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in a £12m deal. New Zealander Wood followed Trippier to St. James Park after the club paid the £25m release clause in his contract at Burnley. The other three players were signed in the final two days of the winter transfer window last month.

A lot of football stakeholders were surprised when Newcastle United won the race to sign Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimares from French giants Lyon with fellow English top flight side Arsenal also keen on the player. The Magpies paid a little over £34m for the player and the transfer could go over the £40m mark if conditions for the add-ons are met. The other two players signed by the Magpies last month are Dan Burn and Matt Targett from Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa. Newcastle United paid around £12m to sign Burn from the Seagulls, while Targett is a loanee from Villa.

The arrival of Targett pushed Lewis out of the 25-man squad, while the arrival of Burn meant that Clark won’t be part of the 25-man squad. On his part, Hayden missed out on the 25-man squad to accommodate the arrival of Guimares from Lyon.

Time is gradually running out for Newcastle United if they want to avoid demotion to the English Championship at the end of the season. It is safe to say that the Magpies need to start picking up wins to close the gap between them and those above them on the Premier League log starting from the home clash with Norwich City on Tuesday night.

With the result against Arsenal, the Magpies are now six points from safety ahead of the Norwich City game at St. James Park later this week.

The Magpies are the only team yet to win amongst all the 92 professional teams in England and they have the chance to make things right when they take on the Canaries who are unbeaten in their last three games including the last two matches under new manager Dean Smith.

With games against tough teams like Leicester City, Manchester City and Liverpool on the horizon, Newcastle United are in must-win territory ahead of the home games against Norwich City and Burnley this week. Burnley and Norwich City are the other two teams in the Premier League relegation zone alongside the Magpies.

Ahead of the Norwich City game, Newcastle United will miss the services of two defensive players namely Matt Ritchie and club skipper Jamaal Lascelles after they each received their fifth yellow card of the season against Arsenal on Saturday. They are expected to return to the team for the Burnley game at the weekend.

Newcastle United can get off the bottom of the table if they can beat Norwich City at home.

The Blues were unable to build on the win over Zenit after they fell on the wrong side of the same scoreline against Juventus.

Young Italian winger Federico Chiesa was one of the stars for Italy at the Euro 2020 tournament in the summer and the Euro 2020 winner continued his good form by scoring the only goal of the game. After a goalless draw in the first half, it took Chiesa just eleven (11) seconds to score what turned out to be the winning goal of the game in the second half.

Chelsea started the season with a seven-game unbeaten run and it was stopped by Premier League holders Manchester City when the two teams met in a league game on Saturday lunchtime. The Saints have announced that the player will be leaving the club in the summer and it looks as though they have already found his replacement. According to reports, Southampton want to sign French club Reims left-back Ghislain Konan in the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old has been in great form for the French side this season and he would be a great addition to the Southampton squad.
