iPhone 6s and 6s Plus review: more than just a refresh

Some people look a little unkindly on the so-called "S" years -- those years when Apple updates the iPhone, but doesn't change how it looks, and then sells that while secretly working on something flashier that will debut 12 months later. I don't think that's exactly fair. Those "S" years are when Apple adds some of its most useful features. Siri? Touch ID? Both valuable additions to the iPhone platform that have since grown in importance. This year we get 3D Touch, a potentially awesome way to interact with iPhones. The thing is, a device's worth isn't just tied up in one feature: It's about how all those moving parts work together. That's why the new 6s and 6s Plus (starting at $649 and $749, respectively, for 16GB models) are such great phones. How Do I Take a Screenshot on my Apple Watch

Taking a screenshot of your Apple Watch’s screen is really easy and just as you would expect. Just press the only two buttons on the watch at the same time, the digital crown and the “side button”. What’s really awesome is you just open our iPhone’s Photos app and there’s the screenshot! Here’s a little video I found to show how it’s done.

Apple Watches Endure Torture Tests

As usual, there are already many video up on the web of people doing scratch and drop test on the newest Apple device, the Apple Watch. This time around there are even more test. For example, water, heat, food, stain resistance and more. We’ve collected some of the best to share here. We’ll make sure to label and organize the videos into the different models. The Apple Watch Sport (aluminum) has a different screen and metal type than the Apple Watch (stainless steel). Then there is the Apple Watch Edition in Gold. So far, I’m very impressed with all the results. If you see any more amazing test, please share them in the comments.

Apple Watch App Store Up and Running

For a while now the Apple Watch app has had a non functioning tab labeled “Featured”. Now that Apple Watches have been delivered, the App Store styled page is up and running. There are a few categories of apps and you can now see thumbnails of screenshots just like you can with the full iPhone/iPad apps. Just to be clear, these are not apps you just install on your Apple Watch, these are apps you install on your iPhone and then have the option of accessing from your watch. There are definetly apps I will not have on my Apple Watch, such as games, but it’s great to have a section highlighting all the apps that have Apple Watch companions.

There is also a section in the App Store app highlighting Apple Watch apps.

Apple Watch — Guided Tour: Apple Pay

Apple has release more “Guided Tour” videos on their YouTube channel and website. Apple is really trying to fight the haters by showing exactly why you should want this device. Personally I do not have a single bank/card that works with Apple Pay so this wouldn’t affect my decision. I’m sure it will be great once all banks and stores offer it. Do you have the new Apple Watch? If so, have you used it yet to pay with Apple Pay? I wonder how many people actually have banks that work with Apple Pay. Let’s find out!

Siri vs. Cortana – Happy Anniversary (Commercial)

I’ve recently been seeing this commercial from Microsoft about their Siri competitor, Cortana. Although I’m pretty sure I’ll never buy a phone from Microsoft (And I know no one that has one), this feature is really nice. Now I’m not sure how it works in real world scenarios but this seems impressive. Like Google Now, it adapts to your schedule, location, traffic and other information to make your life easier. Apple is behind on this one. There are location based tasks and Siri is really good at what it does but it doesn’t really seem to be getting much better lately. It needs to take a real leap to get ahead. What do you think? Also, according to the comments, the real Cortana voice doesn’t sound like that.

Hyperlapse from Instagram – Timelapse App by Instagram

Instagram has released a new app called Hyperlapse that is a very customizable timelapse video app. Funny how it’s put out by Instagram even though they are owned by Facebook. And it’s titled “Hyperlapse from Instagram” not to be confused with the app title just “Hyperlapse” which is a different timelapse app sorta kinda… Anyway, this app is not just a timelapse app. If so, it would become pointless once iOS 8 comes out because it is part of the Camera app update. This app claims some very nice features like: in house stabilization, speed up your hyperlapse to be up to 12 times the speed and quick recording with no account needed. Of course you can share right to Facebook or Instagram. I made this video today going across a bridge on a train ride. We were going much slower so I sped it up to 4x. I like the option to adjust the speed.

Hide Stock Apple Apps in iOS 7.1

Today I found a video showing a quick way to hide Stock Apple apps on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 7.1 firmware. You do not need to be jailbroken for this to work, however, the apps will come back after powering off your device and turning it back on. Follow the steps carefully and you should be able to hide the icons you want (temporarily). If you want to hide stock apps without them coming back, jailbreak your device and install “Poof”. This allows you to hide stock apps without coming back.

Clear Background Apps – Close All Apps With One Tap

I’ve been looking for a nice, simple way to close all my apps in iOS 7 and I’ve found a hack I really like. It’s short and sweet and just takes one tap. Search Cydia for “Clear Background Apps” and install. Then just double click your home button and when the multitasking screen appears just tap the broom icon at the top. Depending on how many apps you have open, it might take a few seconds. Soon all your apps will be closed. This app is free and has no settings to configure.

Edit Clocks – Swipe to Delete Clocks

I always like hacks that seem like they are part of the original iOS and should have been there in the first place. This hack does this by allowing you to swipe to delete clocks under the World Clock tab in your Clocks app. Very simple and free hack found in Cydia.

One big issue I have is that implementing this hack removes original features. I never like when features are removed. This removes the original edit button which also removes the ability to reorder the clocks. Can’t we have our cake and eat it too? So an update to this hack with keeping the original features would be perfect!

When you press the wireless remote Siri will chime and you can tell the phone what you want to do. The mic is supposed to be sensitive enough to work from across the room. The attached dock and mic will also allow you to make hands free phone calls as well. Iris has an embedded speaker so you can hear your calls and voice commands.

The red glowing eye flickers with the voice of Iris 9000 as it speaks. It connects to the wall with an included power adapter and will only work with the iPhone 4S. The device is a ThinkGeek exclusive. You can sign up for email reminders on Iris 9000 and it will sell for $59.99 when it launches.
