Shariya pursued her dream to ascend Everest and died after leaving Canadian flag on top of it. I wish she would make it back home, celebrate her victory with family and friends and continue enjoying her life.

That news made me thinking. What is so important in my life as a goal? What is it that I am trying to reach and make me so happy? What is my Everest?

For me there is one answer "peace". I have my Everest inside trying to climb. It's not an easy task to reach to the point so high that nothing will easily get to me. I want to reach to the point to observe a lot, think a lot and judge a little. I wanna be someone who knows what is she doing. Be aware of my decisions and be in peace with the consequences.
I am a living creature on this little planet dancing around sun which is one of the smallest stars in our universe.
I am happy, I am sad, I win, I loose, I make new friends, I break up, I sleep, I wake up, I Love this, I hate that, I like this but not that..I am Hiva and I am in peace with it, for now.

Book of Life, Chapter Three

55 PMA Celebrating in Islamabad

Earlier this week (May 24), 55 PMA Islamabad Chapter got together at Golf Club to welcome Lt General Zaheer ul Islam to Islamabad on his new assignment.
Welcome back to Episode #44 of The Daily Interaction podcast. Today’s topic is on Episode 44 – How to Properly Introduce yourself. It is both an art and a science, and I am talking about the science part today by sharing my 6-Step Formula to introducing yourself in an unforgettable way to anyone that you meet from here on out!

Think about the ways that you introduce yourself today to people? Do you put any thought into it? Do you just blurt out what comes to mind? Do you have a memorized old line that you pull out and sound like more like an automated machined than yourself? I talk to you about something supremely important today and that is the art and science of introducing yourself properly and unforgettably to the world. And I am a little surprised I haven’t covered this very basic topic in our daily communications until now but better late than never, no?

As bloggers and online entrepreneurs, we can get so caught up sometimes in the technology, services, tools and gadgets instead of working on our communication skills. Just lately, I was drooling over the nice eCommerce solutions by Bluepark’s Shop Software for startups and the webhosting company Cloudnext. New shiny objects pop up everyday and while there is a place for them in our business, it is important to focus on your communications basics first before getting lost in the world of technology!

In life, we meet many, many people and we never ever know in advance what can become of that encounter, and what opportunities may come to us from just a meeting, but that’s exactly where everything starts: when two people meet for the first time, and we are not talking romance here. We are talking business and it is all in the ultimate interest of YOUR business, so let us talk about what sets this whole thing in motion: Introducing yourself.

Your Weekly Friday Show Notes:

1. The difference between elevator pitch and introducing yourself well and why I am right behind Michael Port in eradicating the elevator pitch from our vernacular and why that does not really apply to you.

2. I tell you how I would introduce myself to you if I were to meet you today, and I use that as an example to give you some tips on what to do and what not to do in introducing yourself.

3. Tips on how to introduce yourself by practicing your name, preparing your introduction, and paying attention to what you are going to say – that’s 3 Ps so easy to remember!

4. An example of the most creative introduction by a woman who introduces herself by saying: “I help CEOs of Fortune 500 companies be more productive and win more sales for their companies in the most natural way!” – If you want to know what she does, listen to the podcast.

5. Step 1 of the 6 step formula: Be short and sweet with your introduction – it should not take more than 20 seconds max, and ideally around 10-15 seconds.

6. Step 2 of the 6 step formula: Be captivating – and how do you do that? Listen for my tips in the podcast.

7. Step 3 of the 6 step formula: Be prepared but don’t come across as though you memorized your own introduction.

8. Step 4 of the 6 step formula: Show sincerity and why you should never fake it till you make it when you are doing your introduction.

9. Step 5 of the 6 step formula: Go for clarity and not for cleverness or vagueness and why you should never ever use an acronym in your introduction.

10. Step 6 of the 6 step formula: Let your creativity shine and examples on how to be creative with your introduction.

11. I wrap our episode by telling you a few top reasons why you should put real thought in how you introduce yourself to the world next time an opportunity shows up for you to do so!

I desperately want a Prada bag.

A genuine, $5000, brand spanking new Prada bag, and I want to buy it in Tokyo and Tokyo alone.

In Japan, every woman (at least, every woman that I saw during my 4 separate trips and incalculable hours walking the streets of Tokyo and Kyoto) carries either a Prada, a Gucci or a Louis Vuitton. And it’s only the high-end brands, because you would get just as much value in a brand such as Radley and their lovely purses out of London.

So yeah, I want a real Prada bag. Funny enough, it actually hurts me to see the beautiful bags with the starving, skinny and strange looking models carrying them or wrapping them around their bodies in questionable fashion – total bag abuse if you ask me! – but the bag itself, the exquisitely designed gorgeous bag, now that’s something after which I lust quietly!

Do you have any such inexplicable desires? Is there not a small part of you that fantasizes about something at least half as outlandish as my little Prada?

Here you are, building your life around the concepts of simplicity and acceptance and maybe your own measure of minimalism, and suddenly, the urge comes over you: the urge to buy something very unnecessary and outrageously expensive and you can’t get the darn thing out of your head for all you try.

The brand buying trend in Japan and some other Asian cultures is not about getting value so much as a necessity to make a statement about a person’s place in society, and the top notch Western brand names speak volumes in that language. So naturally, everyone buys them – or it seems that way in the sea of crowds that I scrutinized – perhaps because everyone wants to belong. To conform to the norm. To be accepted as an equal.

That concept is not entirely foreign to me, I grew up in Iran where the most pretentious women on earth proudly obsess with their appearance for a lifetime. It’s true and I say it lovingly, don’t worry, it’s my own kin after all but maybe that’s my curse as I go on yearning for the stupidly expensive Prada!

How does a bag that costs more than twice the average monthly US mortgage fit into the lifestyle I am designing now? How does that integrate into my smart spending plan without exploding it altogether? Even if I chose to afford it, how in the world does this purchase even make any sense?

And suppose I buy my Prada. Will I stop lusting after the gorgeous sun glasses that go perfectly with it? What about the perfect little black dress? Or will I need to learn to redefine the meaning of pleasure altogether?

Oh I do wonder!

If you are reading this post to get to the ultimate answer, I am sorry to disappoint you today. This one is still under heavy investigation but here’s what I know in my heart of hearts:

Sometimes, our desires can get very strong very quickly, and the more changes we make in our life, the more radical these inexplicable desires.

I have been making many radical changes and eliminating many a thing along the way as I create my own lifestyle design and some days, the resistance to simplification and shifts of focus is loud and obnoxious.

I’ve always said I love materialism, and I love the fine luxuries of life, I do, but I want to enjoy them without the inner conflict. I want to break free of the desire to acquire them and yet reward myself handsomely when it feels right. Is that even possible? Is there such a thing as “balance” when you want both smart spending and $5000 bags?

The best tool I have found so far is a very simple one: It’s a question you ask yourself during a pleasant conversation you carry with yourself. You simply ask: “Is it true?”

Is it true that I really want the Prada itself or do I just want the idea of owning Prada?

Is it true that a Prada bag will have lasting quality over the years?

Is it true that a Prada bag will make me look good – or better than I do now?

Is it true that I will be happier carrying my Prada bag than my old and beat-up Coach bag or the no-name bags that came before it?

Is it true that I will not desire another bag a month or a year later because this one is really the one to seal the deal and to satisfy the heart of my desire?

The question is so simple that you may think you are simply validating your assumptions but it’s a very powerful question, and as you keep asking, a seed starts to form that helps you go deeper. Is everything you have come to believe around this desire even true? That may not give us the ultimate answer but it moves us closer and in the process, if nothing else, we get to know ourselves better, and that goes for all of ourselves – the good, the bad and the mysterious parts.

If you know the answer to the inner conflict, and if you have reached that inner peace between your desires for luxury and simplicity, then share your thoughts in the blog comments below and help me find a solution to my Prada Dilemma!

I wake up every day and truthfully ask myself:

“The only thing that I miss about my corporate career is ….. [long pause, silence]“

Nope. Nothing. Nada. Not a whisper. Not a word. Not even a shadow of a thought stirs in my soul.

Thank God, I say with a big smile, another day where I am doing what I love, where I have no regrets, and where I am free and happy and fulfilled. I was a born entrepreneur, that’s for sure, I was made to be my own boss, I was just late to the game by well over a decade.

But that’s not what happens to every person who leaves a lucrative job and income behind and I am not naive enough to tell you that. Some feel regret. Some feel a need to return to the workplace. Some never make it on their own.

I know the inner turmoil that you feel if you are reading this quietly from your cubicle in a job that you hate with all your soul but one that gives you a paycheck that affords that beamer in the parking lot (someone tell me, what is it about guys and beamers!?!) and that lovely condo you own but rarely see. You can’t imagine doing the former day in and day out for another decade or two but boy is it excruciating to imagine living a lesser lifestyle altogether! Terrifying thought, isn’t it?

What are you supposed to do? A part of you is caught up in this chasing your dream and finding your passion business and you can’t stop reading about it in Lifestyle Design or Quit your Job blogs! What would happen if you jumped ship and gave up what you know to be your security and comfort zone and became an “entrepreneur” tomorrow?

What does that even mean – I know I had no clue as a corporate employee – and I mean, what is it really, not what they tell you in fancy marketing lingo that you’ve heard to death but in reality, in hard cold reality, what is a self-employed (online or offline) entrepreneur anyway?

Well, this is your lucky day because I read the most honest and vulnerable post from my dear friend, Angela, today and it stirred me to write this one.

I quit my 6-figure lucrative income in May of 2011. (Happy anniversary to me, yay!). Anyway, seriously, I gave up a lot of cash, a lot of stock options, a lot of security (or perceived security) and a lot of other things too. I made that handsome paycheck working from home a few measly hours a week and I was still a high performing super star and did stellar work. That’s how little the corporate job demanded of me, and that’s how well I had mastered my profession. On top of that, I was building up my side-hustle just fine. What on earth was my problem exactly?

I quit because I was in too much pain for doing something I hated and for truly wasting my time. I wasn’t mildly bored – that happened 5 years before – I wasn’t frustrated – that was 3 years ago – I wasn’t indifferent or angry or unhappy – those were all before the pain came.

The real ache in my heart for wasting another precious hour of my life on a meaningless, politically charged, ridiculously useless MEETING. The real pain for doing another excel spreadsheet or powerpoint with messages and words that disgusted me to no end and created absolutely no value anywhere for anyone in this godforsaken world of corporate world.

Do you know this ache and pain or are you just bored at your miserable job and need a new distraction?

To me, an escape was imperative. I needed my freedom, peace of mind, happiness, joy, and true bliss, and I was right. I have not for a second missed anything, regretted anything, and there is no price at which they can have me back. I am pretty clear about that too. But what about you? Where do you stand?

Take this note though: I did not quit before I reached that point. And if you are not there yet, that’s fine. In fact, I am happy to help you understand whether you are ready to quit cold turkey, or whether it is time for you to consider a smart side-hustle or a planning stage for your next move. That is the focus of my coaching program to help you through different stages of exit from your dreaded job and I do all of that with my fabulous clients and I can do that for you too, if and only if you are done fooling around – it took me a while so I get it, I really do, although I don’t recommend it – and if you are ready to invest in yourself.

But this blog post is about the real story behind being an entrepreneur, which again was inspired by my friend Angela. She is tired of the constant work. She is tired of being glued to her computer. She is sick of the lies about the 4-hour work week. And frankly, I cannot blame my dear Angela because it IS incredibly hard work, so please fool yourself not that you will roll in cash in a few weeks after deciding that you are the newest and hottest entrepreneur in town – or online!

Here’s the 14 ugly truths about being an entrepreneur:

1- You will feel overwhelmed and more than once, confused as to which direction to go, what tools and systems to use, whom to follow and whom to ignore.

2- You will be very challenged on how to organize all your ideas. You’re going to have ideas, no doubt, many fabulous ideas, but how to organize them and prioritize (a non-word from my corporate lingo!), and decide which to do and which to put off, now that’s gonna be a challenge.

3- You will feel alone. Sometimes, very alone. There are no office mates to come by and waste your time and frankly, we as human beings must love to waste time, especially when among fellow human beings. But none of that. It’s you and your home and maybe your cat – I don’t even have one of those, but I do talk to my plants on occasion (hey, my grandmother said they need love and they need to hear it, no joke)

4- You will probably eat by yourself a lot (Not what Keith Ferrazzi recommends a whole lot ), and feel more alone doing so. You may eat with your partner, spouse or family at night but you will be talking about work or thinking about it while eating.

5- You will be sad that no one recognizes your efforts, even though you are ‘authentic’ and genuine and honest. Even though you are creating value every day, you are ignored by all. Even though your stuff “really rocks”. Yet, it’s a ghost town on your website and in your blog. Yeah. Real sadness sets in.

6- You will fail many many times before success. You will feel rotten about it. You will want to beat something or scream at someone but there’s nothing and no one except yourself. You are it. You are accountable for the good and the bad and the latter kinda sucks but it’s part of the game.

7- You will have a very hard time staying motivated. You will get inspired, you will get a lot done at times and you will be fine most of the time but some days, you will battle the demons of self-doubt like nobody’s business, and you will pray for a little motivation, but alas, none in sight and you wonder if it will ever come back.

On battling those demons of self-doubt, come to my FREE training call on May 30th: Moving through the Lows and Highs of Self-worth”

8- You will not know how to separate “work” from personal life, at least not at first, because it’s all so meshed together and it will become so hard to separate these blurry lines from each other.

9- You will work very hard. I mean so hard that your body will ache from it and you will eat twice as much because you burn so many calories working and racking your brain for ideas! Working evenings and weekends and even while visiting family or in the gym, you will be solving problems in your head. You may not be able to get away from work even if you do all the “balance your life” advice that you can find. Yet you will still be inseparable from your business for long stretches of time.

10- You will be glued to the success stories of others but then implementing those tips may not give you the same results and you start to wonder if they are lying in their interviews or if you are so different that nothing works in your business and maybe you made a huge mistake leaving the comfort of that salary and cushy position behind.

11- You will have success, because hard work and sincerity do find a way to reward you, they do, but then you will want more and A LOT more, because you’ve heard about the massive success that your fellow entrepreneurs have enjoyed and you want that. So then you won’t enjoy your little success. It’s all for naught. Just great.

12- You used to travel and have a social life before but now you don’t even want to get away because you are so overly consumed in your work and distractions are only going to delay your eventual success. And let’s face it, it’s really hard to see the computer screen while sitting on the beach, not to mention the crappy WiFi and all the sand that gets everywhere.

13- You will get really excited and motivated after learning about a new idea or coming up with a new program, and you believe with all your heart that it can change the lives of others but then, you get no traction and no response. Maybe a few people get something out of your programs or products but your vision of helping hundreds or thousands falls flat on its face and you may even shed a few tears and this part isn’t just for the women among us because this stuff really hurts.

14- You will start to doubt yourself. You will start to doubt the lifestyle of a self-employed “rockstar”, the whole entrepreneurship dream, and you will get a little bitter and a little frustrated, and you may even experience mild depression. You forget about your inner self-confidence altogether and succumb to being a victim of the sad circumstance you build around yourself!

You get the idea, right?
It’s painful. I know.

Entrepreneurship: Not a walk in the park. Not a piece of cake. Not easy as pie. Not like shooting fish in a barrel. Not easy peasy. In other words, it’s not easy, for those of you who don’t know all the crazy American expressions that took me some 20 years to pick up !

But don’t be discouraged, because this is what it takes, and if you are made for it, you are made for amazing rewards. And remember, there is a lot of grey in between the black and white and you can make transition at your own pace and on your own time.

This is what it takes to build something from scratch where nothing existed before in its place, and where it only existed in the windmills of your imagination. This is what it takes and if you are willing to put in the hours and to do this work, and to wake up every day, 6 months later, a year later, 2 years later or even 5 years later, and still would rather do what you believe in and change the world on your own terms than waste your life at a meaningless job, then you are meant for entrepreneurship and self-employment and walking your own path.

Plus, with the right guidance and smart decisions, it does not have to take that long to become a thriving entrepreneur and it has amazing thrills that will keep you wide awake at night from the excitement of it all. So what are the thrills? What makes it worthwhile? How can you do it and learn to avoid some serious mistakes that can derail you? How can you find out if entrepreneurship is even right for you?

Talk to someone who’s been there and can show you the ropes. Invest in yourself and work with someone who can give you real practical advice before you risk your safety and security net from corporate.

If you like my style, book a free 20 minute consult with me. I have just 3 spots left in my June coaching program and if you nodded as you read this post, if you still want to create your own lifestyle and call your own shots, I will teach you the real deal of working for yourself and help you decide what to do with your career. Today. Not tomorrow. Not next month. Not next year. Because the only thing that you can’t get back and you can’t make up for is TIME, baby!

What do you think? Am I a radical on the subject or right on the spot here? Share your thoughts – agree or disagree, gonna love it so long as you do it with sincerity – on entrepreneurship and corporate life below in the comments.

Welcome back to Episode #43 of The Daily Interaction podcast. Today’s topic is How to Explain Your Unconventional Lifestyle. How do you do this where you don’t give in to the status quo and without apologizing for living life differently and at the same time, without offending anyone and without coming across as defensive, or rude or preaching about it? That’s the challenge that we are going to unravel today.

Guess Who is the Fresh Voice This Episode:

Our Fresh Voice for today was Arvind Devlia, who is a dear friend of mine out of London. He is a published author, a life coach, and a great blogger at Arvind Devalia Plus, the reason I picked him is because we did a juice fast together back in March and lived to tell about it. Seriously, this plays a role later in the episode and it will all make sense.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about your unconventional choices around 3 main life areas: The first one is around your professional work and career, the second is around your family orientation, the nature of your partnership, marriage or children, and the last one is around your health choices and diets such as the vegan, raw vegan, low car, vegetarian diets or choices in doing juice fasting, or just adding green juices or green smoothies to your diets.

How do you get your family to understand you, support you, and love you nonetheless with the choices you are making? What are some of the conversations you are going to have? And why it’s the most important thing for you to fully understand the underlying reasons which is compelling you to make your choices?

Your Weekly Friday Show Notes:

1. First, I cover the rules before having those conversations. Rule #1 is to never get defensive and I tell you how and why.

2. Second, I cover the next rule and that is to never ever preach what you believe to be the right way to live but instead learn how to inform and educate others.

3. Having the conversation where people react to you leaving your safe corporate job to go off to start your own company? How do you in words politely validate your sanity and assure them that this choice is right for you? I had to assure my own family that this decision for me would ruin neither my marriage nor my credit rating.

4. The things to say and not to say when people ask you about your lifestyle choices such as marriage, children, and family orientation. How do you win over the support and love of family and friends and still – STILL – be true to your own unconventional life choices.

5. How to explain your unconventional food choices such as a vegan or raw food diet or a juice fast and what kind of approach to use to educate others without preaching and doing so with love and compassion so that you become approachable and still stay true to your choices.

6. I wrap with telling you just how to be a role model and an example to others by following your heart and practicing these tips in interacting with others about your unconventional lifestyle choices.

What Can You Do to Show Your Love

My Sweet TDI Peeps: This was the 43rd episode – that is forty three weeks in a row without missing a beat. Are you still enjoying the podcast? Will you miss it if I quit doing them?? Just kidding and making sure you are reading what I write here! And remember, the best way to show your love is by doing an iTunes ranking, right? Until next time, I am blowing you a kiss for showing your love for the podcast!

Mana Neyestani, a leading Iranian cartoonist who has also been jailed for his cartoons, made a cartoon to support the cause.

Before you think me a spoiled little brat (ouch!) and move on, let me disclose a huge secret: All that didn’t happen overnight by itself!!! They didn’t hand it over to me on day 1 because I was the prettiest and smartest engineer on staff! No. Not exactly! They put me rock bottom, well below where I needed to start, and kept me there as long as they could no matter how brilliantly I performed for the first, oh, 4 years, and that’s about how long it took me to REALLY learn how to run my own career and to throw wishful thinking that “work hard and they will reward you” rubbish theory out the window!

From that point, I built that career, from scratch and with great pain along the way, with 80-hour weeks, with getting passed over for raises and promotions countless times, working weekends and nights for years, with dreading life while devoting myself to work. So when I got to the top and doubled my salary and decided how to work from home on my terms and how to be of service in my way to the company, I had paid my dues and strangely enough, earned the respect of everyone and became a top performer.

Anyway, this was exactly how it was supposed to unfold. You put your everything into something, you build it and then you reap the rewards, right? So I was reaping away … despite the lackluster leadership, the frustrating management, the dying culture, and the highly charged political climate, but hey, who doesn’t have a little excitement on their way to the top?

Except, the “top” wasn’t really the top I was going for, and the act of doing what I resented on a daily basis – the sum of which can be describe as a lot of NOTHING – while working for a company that I no longer respected, believed or loved was becoming too painful. Too much of a burden to carry. Too much of a suffering.

A little disclaimer: If you think it’s impossible to feel this way while you make a lot of money, then this blog post is not for you and you have a long way to go in your career and your job and I am happy for you. Plus I know precisely how you feel because I was in your shoes and hated everyone who talked this way because I wanted what they had so badly but my ego would not allow me to consider it. They are lucky. I am a victim. That was my motto. So I kept hating. It was the easiest response and the most regretful one down the road.

So the real point I am making today for you is this:

You should seriously consider quitting your day job IF…

… your health and well-being is suffering from the misery of doing your work, if the stress is slowly killing you and turning you into an unhappy soul, if you are in pain because you are not getting up everyday to do the work that you love and to know that you are making a difference, consider quitting. If you are in agony for being a corporate drone, for being a robot and wasting your life away at meetings that will mean nothing to anyone a month or a year down the road, and if you are dying to feel the ecstasy and fulfillment that comes doing meaningful work, making a difference and making money at it and especially if you can’t wait to become a barefoot executive, then yes, quitting is for you.

I am not saying quit without a smart exit plan. I am saying you need to think about quitting.

You should not quit your job IF…

… you are perfectly fine collecting the paycheck while hating the work, don’t mind putting in the hours, slacking off at work, being an average performer, and if you are not stressed about all the things that stress others and if you are just toying with the “what if” ideas of doing something on your own now and again. If you are not willing to put in the sweat and the heart that it takes to start something meaningful on your own, if you think of your dreams as a risk you can’t afford and a liability you can’t carry, if you are more interested in taking a vacation or spending time with friends and family and enjoying your hobbies – all of which are significant in their own right – than transforming your life, then quitting your job is a bad idea.

Maybe a side-hustle is a good idea for you. Maybe Quitter is a good book for you. Maybe later will be a better time to quit your job.

Been there, felt that pain, and hear you loud and clear

I get it. I get you no matter where you are because boy have I been in every single phase, every emotional roller coaster and every dilemma that I stated here in this blog post, so I hear you, I hear you loud and clear, and I can help you move past every single phase into the next phase that is right for YOU if you are ready (but not a minute sooner) to invest in yourself and stop doing it all on your own. And you know, I even FEEL your pain if you are trapped and cannot leave because of financial obligations and because of where your life is right now. I get that.

But I don’t get the giving up and giving in part. Now that is you self-sabotaging yourself and your own chances at success and happiness, and that you can change with your own thinking and your own two hands.

There is hope if you choose to believe. There is heaps of opportunity if you choose to see it. There is a way to make money at whatever your heart desires if you decide so. There is a way out for everyone if you want out and if you are willing to decide that it is for you. There is a chance for you to start over if you want to. There is a place for you to still become who you want to be, if you stop acting like a victim and start looking for possible ways to do it.

The people who succeed, the ones that you think got “lucky” because they cannot possible be smarter than you, they DECIDED that was their faith. They decided they will believe in themselves first before getting a serious plan of action under way and they decided not to believe the other rubbish. They are absolutely not smarter, or more knowledgeable or more skilled or more talented and lucky certainly has nothing to do with it.

So you have a choice – you quit or you stay. You decide this path. You are in control. Not me, not your boss, and hopefully not anyone else in your life! And if that decision comes from the heart, and if you are making it consciously and carefully but without denial and without your ego, without the help from media and the influence of friends, if you are listening to your true self, then you are on the right path and making the right choice right now.

To quit or not to quit your cushy job. There is no right or wrong answer. There is a different right answer for everyone. What’s right for you?

You want more of those secretes to be a top performer in corporate without killing yourself, or if you want to find the path to your eventual exit from corporate, then sign up here, baby!
