Educators devise ways to make grads succeed in new WTO era

Nguyen Thien Nhan, Minister of Education and Training

As a member of the WTO, there are lots of challenges and opportunities ahead. Viet Nam’s education system hasn’t met our social needs. Therefore, Viet Nam recently organised an international forum where educators discussed how to train our young to meet employers’ needs.

Eight countries, including our own, participated in the talks.

During the forum, we found many countries are facing the same problem of developing programmes and training for students that get them jobs after graduating.

In order to address the problem, employers and universities need to work together to develop appropriate education strategies.

Companies need to inform universities about what they need from students, and in turn, universities must change their syllabuses to meet those criteria.

We’re also trying to improve the skills of our university teachers. At present, only 13 per cent of the lecturers at our institutions have a PhD.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) is hosting a series of teaching courses in English at nine universities across the country. We hope people take this opportunity to improve their abilities in the classroom.

In the next ten years, we’d like to see 20,000 lecturers with PhDs, accounting for 20 per cent of the total. To make this happen, we are planning to send lecturers to study abroad.

In addition, our schools need to focus more on teaching the English language. Right now, English at schools is still limited. We must find a way to teach our mother tongue and English so our students can communicate easily in both languages.

In Memory of My Student!

This was a piece of writing by one of my students who was no longer in this world because of a terrible accident a few years ago (perhaps in 2005). She was a student of K35 in the English Department. She wrote it in my Writing lesson in which I told all my students to start writing with the word SOMETIMES.

I always have a strong feeling when I read it. Today, I would like to share with you. To tell you the truth, I've never carried this activity again since that bad news.

Sometimes ………

Sometimes, my life seems to be meaningless. That occurs when I have too much failure. I know that life always gives me trials and never welcomes me. The Bible says that, “Every opening door and immense ways also lead to the decline”. It means that people have to pass the challenges if they want to be glorious. But whimsically, I am a person of fantastic hopes and my ideas are often away from the reality now and then. So, even a small challenge can make me lose all my hopes. Do you know that I need you beside me on our way to the future? But you came and went away. You leave me alone in the broken world. I am not myself as my heart was stolen by you.

Sometimes, I wander on the streets in cold winds. I feel too cold. The coldness makes my soul freezing and callous forever, but I don’t feel lonely when I miss you. I bury my remembrances in the bottom of my heart. I am happy when I know that you are happy. Don’t think that I am a high-minded person. I am not. I am selfish. I don’t want to lose you. I don’t want anybody to love you except me, but I can do nothing when you don’t love me anymore. I know I will not fell cold without you, I will not be lonely when I see people hands in hands. I realize that it is hopeless if I still miss the one who never misses me. Sua flowers in Hanoi could keep you for me and one day they also can’t keep me here. I will go to another place where I feel wretched. You know, I will go …… .

Sometimes, I think idly as if what I think of is in my last dreams. Everything is mixed up and it does not exist. That is the way I cultivate for our love so that I will love you more and more when we are together.

My, dear! There were times that I call “Sometimes”.

Academic English at tertiary level: What, why and how

Academic writing is arguably the most important language skill to tertiary students, especially to English-major ones, whose grades are largely determined by their performance in written assignments, academic reports, term examinations and graduation theses. However, reality has proved the difficulties of Vietnamese learners in applying the right level of formality, lexical dense, and objectivity. The article, with the hope to help the tertiary English- major students improve their skill of writing academic English, first deals with an overview on academic English and the necessity of equipping them with knowledge of academic English. It will also go on to put forward some strategies for effective writing academic English.

Why is action research suitable for education?

Action research is actually suitable for any person who wishes to improve his or her performance; or any group or organization who hopes for doing the same. As a matter of fact, action research is widely used in education, especially by teachers who use it to improve their teaching. Teaching efl writing in Vietnam: Problems and solutions - a discussion from the outlook of applied linguistics

Applied linguistics is defined as a discipline that uses a variety of methods to address language-based problems, one of which is that of language teaching and learning. Based on this definition, the article will define and tackle the problem of teaching EFL writing in Vietnam which has, for a long time, been considered a challenge for language teachers. Specifically, this article will explore three main areas of the problem: (i) How to raise students’ awareness of why they should write in English, (ii) How to teach students to write in English, and (iii) How to assess students’ writing skill. The article will be concluded that the problem of teaching EFL writing can be solved thanks to different methods such as psycholinguistics, SLA, syntax, sociolinguistics, and pragmatics, and that the solutions will help developing the students’ English writing skill in particular and communicative competence in general.

Mistake or Vietnamese English

It is undeniable that English has become the most popular foreign language in Vietnam nowadays. Nevertheless, among the millions of people speaking English in Vietnam, there are many people who make mistakes in pronunciation. This creates some typical features of so-called “Vietnamese English”. This paper focuses on the mistakes made by Vietnamese users of English when pronouncing the four English sounds /∫/, /ℨ /, /ʧ/ and /ʤ/. Reasons for the mistakes and some tentative suggestions to mitigate the problem are then discussed. The mistakes are identified in terms of both wrong manner of articulation and wrong place of articulation of the sounds. It is argued that the mistakes can be explained in terms of inadequate knowledge of the articulation of the sounds and, more importantly, the interference of the mother tongue. Suggestions for effective ways to overcome the difficulty include: careful instruction in how to pronounce the sounds, comparative and contrastive analysis of the phonetic features of the sounds in English and those of the similar sounds in Vietnamese, and more emphasis on drills and practice..
