Chủ đề của bài học hôm nay là câu How Do You Spend the Rest of Your Day?=Phần còn lại của ngày hôm nay bà tính sẽ làm gì? Quí vị cũng học về những trạng tự chỉ mức thường xuyên—adverbs of frequency—như always (luôn luôn, bao giờ cũng); usually (thường); sometimes (thỉnh thoảng, đôi khi) và never (không bao giờ).

Kathy phỏng vấn bà Martha Harris, mẹ của ông Harris. Quí-vị nghe những chữ: grandmother=hay grandma=bà; grandchild=cháu trai hay gái; grandson=cháu trai; granddaughter=cháu gái; mother-in-law=mẹ chồng hay mẹ vợ. Gary: Well, I would say that good bosses encourage their subordinates to disagree with them.
Eliz: Why is that?
Gary: Well, think about it. Let’s say that the boss is going to make a new policy. A subordinate feels strongly that the new policy will cause big problems. If the subordinate is right, the boss will look very bad.
Eliz: I think that I understand. The subordinate can help the boss by keeping him or her from doing something stupid.
Gary: Yes, that’s it exactly. That’s why good bosses want their subordinates to tell them when they are wrong. Of course, the bosses want to hear strong facts and reasons to support the disagreement. [to support=ủng hộ, hỗ trợ]
Eliz: So they only want intelligent disagreement.
Gary: Yes. Good bosses want to listen to different opinions and then make a decision. But there are limits.
Eliz: What kind of limits?
Gary: Well, after the final decision is made, everyone has to support it, even the people who disagreed with it. If they don’t support it, there will be a really bad atmosphere in the office.
Eliz: So it’s OK to disagree before the decision is made, but afterwards, you have to be quiet.

Larry: Gary’s Tips
Eliz: Now it’s time for Gary’s Tips with Gary Engleton!
Gary: Hello, Elizabeth. Today I’ll be talking about how to disagree politely.
Eliz: In business, it is sometimes necessary to disagree, even with your boss.
Gary: When you disagree, it’s important to recognize the other person’s feeling. In American business or social situations, it is very impolite to say directly “You’re wrong.” Instead you should use expressions for polite disagreement, as we hear in today’s Business Dialog. It is always a good idea to show that you understand the other person’s position. For example, Amy says to Henry that she can understand his concern.
Henry: I’m really worried about the team. They’re working so much that they’re too tired to think clearly. I think we’ve got to give them a couple of days off!
Amy: I can understand your concern, but the project is almost finished.
Gary: In a similar way, Mr. Epstein, shows that he understands Ms. Graham’s position.
Epstein: Well, again, I understand your reservations, Shirley, but again the technology of their product is really excellent.
Gary: Even if you don’t agree with people, you should let them know that you understand their idea. Here is an example from the Business Dialog.

IDM 5.15 bắt link download Audio, Video tuyệt vời

Internet Download Manager (IDM), một trong những chương trình hỗ trợ download rất quen thuộc với nhiều người, qua thời gian các phiên bản của IDM ngày càng hoàn thiện, tới bây giờ là bản 5.15 có thêm chức năng hỗ trợ download Audio, Video khá hay.

Đối với IDM bản 5.14 thì muốn download các file video dạng FLV như video ở Youtube, Socbay, Bammboo, Clipvn… thì bạn mở IDM lên, chọn Options.

Cửa sổ “Manager Configuration” Hiện ra, Ở tab “General“. Vùng “Integrate into browsers” là mục để bạn chọn trình duyệt mà IDM tự động bắt link down, (cần thiết ở 1 số trang không hỗ trợ download như Youtube)

Khi đánh dấu chọn vào ô mà trình duyệt bạn đang dùng, thì khi bạn mở file nào ở trang nào đó, thì IDM sẽ tự động bắt link hỏi bạn có down ko, Mà không chạy được file ở trình duỵêt, (cái này sử dụng down Clip ở Youtube rất tốt)

Bạn muốn IDM tự bắt link down video thì trước tiên bạn phải thêm định dạng FLV cho IDM bằng cách thêm vào “File Type” FLV rồi nhấn OK :

Downloan ở Youtube: bình thường bạn đừng đánh dấu vào những ô dưới, khi vào youtube nghe nhạc, thích cái clip nào thì mở IDM lên, đánh dấu vào trình duyệt mà bạn đang chạy Youtube, Rồi ok, trở lại Youtube, nhấn F5 là IDM tự động lên hỏi bạn có down Video về không? (Chú ý là khi đánh dấu sẽ không xem được Video)

Khi đã có IDM 5.15 rồi thì lúc bạn vào web nghe nhạc hay xem phim, IDM sẽ hiện ra cái nút nhỏ như hình dưới (đối với cả Video và cả Audio), nếu muốn down về máy thì bạn nhấn cái nút này.

We’re here with our business language expert Gary Engleton.
Gary, we have an e-mail question about the structure of American companies.
The question is “How are American companies organized?”
Gary: Well, most traditional American companies have a clear organizational structure.
It’s clear who does what. People can change jobs, but the company structure does not change.
For example, a salesperson can become a sales manager.
Eliz: Or the manager of a department can become a vice president...
Gary: Yes, that’s right.
A worker can be promoted to a better job within the organization.
The organization doesn’t change.
Eliz: I see.
Gary: Newer companies sometimes have a more flexible structure, especially in the high-tech world.
These companies may be organized into project teams.
These teams may be temporary.
Eliz: Temporary?
Gary: Yes, they may work together only for a short time.
Then the workers may be moved to other teams for different projects.
Eliz: And what if there is no new project?
Gary: In many companies, these workers may be laid off.
The president or vice-presidents may not change, but the managers and workers will change jobs much more than in the past.
Eliz: Why does a company adopt a flexible structure?
Gary: The world of business is changing very quickly.
A flexible structure helps a company move quickly.
Eliz: That makes sense.

Gary: Hello, Elizabeth. Today I’ll be talking about how to offer an opinion.
When you give an opinion, it is a good idea to use an expression like “I think” or “in my opinion.” In this way, you show that you know you are offering an opinion, not stating a fact. In the Business Dialog we heard earlier, the company president and vice president have different ideas about the importance of new technology.

The President thinks that more money should be spent on research, but the Vice President thinks it is more important to keep costs down.

They use the expressions “I really think” and “in my opinion” when they give their opinions.

President: I really think that we need to spend more money on research.
We need more computer technology to keep up with the competition.

Vice President: That’s a good point, but in my opinion, we have to focus on keeping costs down.

Gary: Both executives try to soften the difference of opinion and keep the conversation going.
The Vice President also uses the expression “It seems to me...” to offer his opinion:

Vice President: It seems to me that computer technology greatly increases the price of a car.

Gary: Using the expression “It seems to me” is a good way to offer an opinion.
American culture values the free expression of ideas.
When personal opinions are presented as opinions (and not as facts), people are more comfortable offering different opinions. This free discussion can also lead to new ideas, which are good for business.

Thưa thầy, em hiện là sinh viên theo học ngành 721 Tiếng Anh-TCNH. Vậy bằng tốt nghiệp của chúng em sẽ là bằng Cử nhân Tiếng Anh chuyên ngành TCNH (tức đơn thuần chỉ là tiếng anh chuyên ngành) thôi ạ? Em nghĩ đây là chương trình Double Majors thì 2 majors phải có giá trị tương đương nhau phải không ạ? Nếu bằng chỉ ghi là "Cử nhân Tiếng Anh" thì chuyên ngành TCNH của chúng em sẽ chỉ là 1 minor thôi ạ?

Gary: Good question. In most companies, executives and managers--high-level employees--have private offices. By a private office, I mean a room with a door, a door that closes.

Eliz: What exactly is a cubicle?

Eliz: Where can people meet, if they want to talk? Cubicles are too small for meetings, aren’t they?

I was concerned that a foreign company like International Robotics could not provide adequate maintenance. Mike didn’t seem very worried about this, but I was very concerned.
