Sailboats fill the harbor, outdoor tables spill onto the sidewalks, and the breeze off Narragansett Bay keeps things a little cooler than inland Rhode Island.

Most people come for the mansions. What keeps them coming back are the harbor views, the Cliff Walk, the beaches, and the easy rhythm of a place where you can spend the morning on the water and still make it to dinner overlooking the bay.

Most first-timers spend their entire visit touring mansions and never see the rest of Newport. After years of day trips and weekend getaways here, I’ve learned that some of the city’s best summer experiences happen well beyond the mansion gates.

To make planning easier, you’ll find these summer things to do in Newport grouped by area and interest. That way, you can mix and match them into the kind of Newport day that sounds best to you.

Where to Stay in Newport

I’ve stayed twice at the Admiral Fitzroy Inn on Thames Street, with comfortable rooms a short walk from the harbor.

Where you stay shapes the whole trip. I’ve stayed twice at the Admiral Fitzroy Inn on Thames Street, and the location is hard to beat.

You’re within walking distance of the harbor, restaurants, Bowen’s Wharf, and much of downtown. There’s also a rooftop deck, continental breakfast, and free on-site parking, which is a bigger advantage than it sounds in summer.

If you’d rather stay closer to Bellevue Avenue and the mansions, Hotel Viking is a popular choice.

And for a special occasion, consider one of the waterfront properties near Ocean Drive, where the views are the main attraction.

On the Water

1. Take a Sunset Harbor Cruise

If I had to choose just one summer activity in Newport, a sunset harbor cruise would top the list.

Not only will you enjoy a day on the water, but you’ll get a perspective of Newport it’s hard to get inland. From the harbor, the contrasts that define Newport become much clearer. Grand mansions and luxury homes sit above rocky shorelines, while sailboats and working vessels move through the same waters below.

Newport Classic Cruises runs the motor yacht Rum Runner II, built during Prohibition for exactly the trade its name suggests. For something more classic, take a sunset sail on the schooner Madeleine.

Either one gives you panoramic views of the mansions, bridges, and lighthouses as the sun begins to set over the harbor.

2. Wander Bowen’s Wharf and Grab a Cookie at The Cookie Jar

Bowen’s Wharf sits right on the harbor and makes an easy first stop in Newport.

You’ll see boats come and go throughout the day, and you can wander between the shops, restaurants, and waterfront walkways. If you don’t take a harbor cruise, this is also a great place to catch a sunset over the marina.

Before you leave, stop at The Cookie Jar for a warm cookie. Just follow your nose. The chocolate chip is the classic choice, but it’s hard to go wrong.

3. Watch the Sailboats at Fort Adams (and Sail Newport)

Fort Adams State Park, is at the entrance to Newport Harbor, providing sweeping views back toward downtown. In summer, sailboats crisscross the water throughout the day. The fort itself is worth a tour if you like history.

Sail Newport, the state’s public sailing center, shares the passageway, so you can watch the little 420s and dinghies zip around, or sign up and get out on the water yourself.

Even if you don’t tour the fort or take a sailing lesson, it’s worth stopping for the harbor views alone. It’s easy to pass the time, sitting in your car or at the shore, mesmerized by the boat traffic.

4. Ride the Sunset Dinner Train

Looking for a break from the harbor crowds? The Grand Bellevue Rail Dining Experience offers something completely different just north of Newport in nearby Portsmouth. The 2½-hour sunset dinner train combines a multi-course dinner with Narragansett Bay views from restored vintage rail cars.

I was pleasantly surprised by both the food and the service. The entertainment added to the atmosphere without taking over the evening, and depending on what you order, you may even leave with a souvenir glass mug.

The highlight for me was the sunset.

As the train passes areas with open views of the bay, the scenery really shines. It’s an easy evening outing if you’ve already spent the day exploring Newport and want something beyond another waterfront restaurant.

Just pay attention to the departure location when you book. The train boards in Portsmouth, not downtown Newport, and returns you to the same parking area at the end of the trip.

Beaches, Cliffs, and the Quiet Side

5. Walk the Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk is one of Newport’s signature experiences, and it’s free.

The 3.5-mile path follows the shoreline with the Atlantic on one side and the back lawns of the Gilded Age mansions on the other.

You don’t have to walk the entire route. The paved section near First Beach is the easiest and offers some of the best views.

Farther south, the terrain becomes much rockier and uneven. Because of ongoing repairs, a detour remains in place around a damaged section of the walk.

If you’re visiting Newport for the first time, this is one place I wouldn’t skip.

6. Spend a Beach Day at Second Beach (Sachuest)

For a real beach day, skip the crowds at Easton’s Beach and head a few minutes east to Second Beach (officially Sachuest Beach) in Middletown. The beach stretches for about a mile and a half, with gentle surf, soft sand, and more room to spread out than you’ll find in downtown Newport.

On clear days, you can spot the distinctive towers of St. George’s School rising above the shoreline in the distance.

The beach also offers bathrooms, showers, changing areas, and a concession stand, making it easy to spend most of the day here.

I like to walk along the water’s edge from one end of the beach to the other, with the white noise of the ocean clearing my head.

7. Catch the Surf at Easton’s Beach (First Beach)

Easton’s Beach, known locally as First Beach, is Newport’s main public beach and one of the most popular spots in town on a summer day. The beach marks the northern end of the Cliff Walk, making it easy to combine the two if you’re planning to do both.

The waves tend to be a little larger than at nearby Second Beach, which makes it a popular spot for boogie boarding. You’ll also find a snack bar, carousel, and plenty of people enjoying the ocean views.

8. Hike Hanging Rock at the Norman Bird Sanctuary

If you want a break from beaches and downtown Newport, head to Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown. There’s a large parking area at the visitor center, where you’ll check in before heading out on the trails ($7 for adults, with discounts for seniors and children; proceeds benefit the cause).

Hanging Rock is the destination most visitors come to see. The trail leads to one of the best elevated views on Aquidneck Island, with Second Beach stretched out below and the distinctive towers of St. George’s School rising in the distance. But even in the elevated parking lot, you’ll get a nice view.

After the energy of downtown Newport, the sanctuary feels peaceful and unhurried. You don’t need to tackle every trail, either. Even a shorter walk will reward you with a peaceful reset.

9. Drive Ocean Drive and Stop at Brenton Point

Ocean Drive is one of the prettiest, sleepiest corners of Newport, and it’s free.

Drive out past the mansions and you’ll find rocky coastline, open water, and a surprising amount of green: farms, stone walls, occasionally sheep grazing.

Stop at Brenton Point State Park to watch the kite flyers, or park in the quiet stretch near Castle Hill and just watch the boats come and go.

It’s one of my favorite free things to do in Newport, and almost nobody on the mansion tour ever finds it.

The Mansions, Beyond the Obvious

10. Tour One Newport Mansion (and Only One)

Yes, see a mansion. In summer, my pick is Marble House.

The grounds overlook the Atlantic, and the Chinese Tea House gives you another reason to linger after the tour (more on that at number 11).

If you want sheer Gilded Age spectacle, The Breakers is the showstopper. If you’re more interested in gardens, head to The Elms and its celebrated sunken garden.

All are run by the Preservation Society, and you can purchase combination tickets if you’d like to visit more than one property. Whatever you choose, go early, and save the rest of your day for everything else Newport has to offer.

11. Have Lunch at the Chinese Tea House at Marble House

Here’s the beyond-the-mansions twist most visitors miss: reserve brunch or afternoon tea at the Chinese Tea House at Marble House. Set on the grounds above the Atlantic, it gives you the Gilded Age setting and ocean views without spending half the day touring multiple mansions.

It’s one of the most memorable places to sit down for a meal in Newport, and far more people visit Marble House than make it out to the Tea House.

It isn’t cheap, but you’re paying as much for the setting as the meal. Reservations are recommended.

12. Time Your Trip to the Flower Show or Secret Garden Tour

If you enjoy gardens like I do, two Newport summer events are worth planning around. The Newport Flower Show takes over the grounds of Rosecliff each June, while the Secret Garden Tour opens a collection of private historic gardens to visitors for a weekend later in the month.

If you have to pick one, my recommendation leans toward the Secret Garden Tour. It gives you a glimpse into the beautiful provate landscapes in Newport you wouldn’t see otherwise.

Dates and ticket details change from year to year, so you’ll want to check the current schedule before your trip and plan ahead if either event interests you.

Bellevue Avenue and Culture

13. Play or Tour the International Tennis Hall of Fame

The International Tennis Hall of Fame occupies the historic Newport Casino, one of the most distinctive buildings on Bellevue Avenue. Inside, you’ll find vintage rackets, historic tennis fashions, championship trophies, and exhibits that trace the evolution of the sport ($25 adult admission at the time of writing).

Outside, the grass courts remain in active use throughout the season. From May through September, visitors can even reserve court time and play on one of the few remaining grass-court facilities in the United States.

Even if you don’t play tennis, the building itself is worth seeing. Walking through the building feels a little like stepping back into Newport’s Gilded Age summer scene.

You can park across Bellevue Avenue in the Bellevue Gardens lot (paid), making this one of the easier Bellevue attractions to visit by car.

14. See the Cars at the Audrain Automobile Museum

The Audrain Automobile Museum at 222 Bellevue rotates themed exhibits throughout the year, so there’s often something different to see on a return visit.

When I visited last, the focus was on early automobiles, complete with rumble seats, polished wood interiors, oversized chrome details, and cartoon-like horns.

One of the highlights was seeing an early Rolls-Royce up close, complete with the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament.

The museum isn’t large, which makes it easy to fit into an afternoon on Bellevue Avenue, and the rotating exhibits are reason enough to come back another time. Audrain regularly rotates themes ranging from brass-era automobiles to muscle cars, Corvettes, and modern supercars.

Adult admission is currently about $18.

15. Visit the Newport Art Museum

The Newport Art Museum is housed in the Griswold House, an 1864 Stick Style summer cottage designed by Richard Morris Hunt. The art is worth seeing, but what stayed with me was the house itself.

Dark woodwork, parquet floors, exposed beams, and a dramatic staircase give the interior a wow factor that rivals some of Newport’s better-known historic homes. I found myself looking at the architectural details almost as much as the artwork.

The galleries include both traditional and contemporary works, so you’ll find a mix of historic and modern pieces throughout the museum. The campus also includes additional gallery and studio space behind the main house, making it more than a single-building museum.

If you’ve toured enough mansions for one trip, this is a quieter way to experience Newport’s architectural history while enjoying some excellent art at the same time.

16. Step Inside the National Museum of American Illustration

The National Museum of American Illustration, in Vernon Court, a grand Beaux-Arts mansion on Bellevue, holds one of the country’s leading collections of original illustration art. The collection includes original works by Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth, J.C. Leyendecker, Jessie Willcox Smith, and other influential American illustrators.

As if those names aren’t enough to inspire a visit, the mansion itself has presence of place. High ceilings, gilded details, classical busts, and sunlit rooms create a sense of elegance that feels very Newport. I found myself admiring the architecture almost as much as the artwork.

NMAI generally has limited open hours, and at the time of writing, the museum is closed for renovations. So check the current status before adding it to your itinerary. When it’s open, it’s a treat for art lovers and an easy pairing with the art museum.

17. Find a Quiet Hour at the Redwood Library

The Redwood Library and Athenaeum dates to 1747 and is the oldest lending library still operating in its original building in the United States. You can tour the historic library, view exhibitions, and explore a side of Newport history that predates the Gilded Age mansions by more than a century.

You’ll find it just off Bellevue Avenue. It’s an easy stop for history and architecture enthusiasts.

18. Browse the Bellevue Avenue Boutiques

The boutiques around Bellevue Avenue offer a different shopping experience than you’ll find along the waterfront.

Around the Hotel Viking and Bellevue Gardens, you’ll find clothing boutiques, jewelry, and specialty shops that feel a little more polished than the souvenir stores near Bowen’s Wharf and Thames Street.

Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s a pleasant area to wander for a while between sightseeing stops.

Downtown, Thames Street, and After Dark

19. Shop and Stroll Thames Street

Thames Street runs along the harbor and is the heart of downtown, packed with shops, galleries, and places to duck in for a drink. Summer crowds fill the sidewalks, and nearly every block offers another place to browse, eat, or stop for a drink.

Give yourself an unhurried afternoon to browse and gallery-hop, then work your way toward the wharves as the day cools off.

Newport is at its best when you’re not rushing from one attraction to the next.

20. Have a Drink at the White Horse Tavern

The White Horse Tavern has been welcoming guests since 1673 and is recognized as both America’s oldest operating tavern and a National Historic Landmark.

Despite the history, it doesn’t feel like a tourist attraction playing dress-up.

You’ll find white tablecloths and attentive service. Exposed beams, old fireplaces, and wavy glass window panes remind you that you’re dining in a building that dates to the 1600s.

I still remember a waiter describing a special that included lardoons, a word I’d never heard before. My dining companion and I got a good laugh out of it, and I’ve never forgotten the meal. The food was excellent, but what stayed with me was the experience of enjoying a refined dinner in a place that has been serving travelers for more than 350 years.

Even if you only stop in for a drink, it’s a piece of living history.

21. Take an Evening Ghost Tour

After dark, a lantern-led ghost tour is a fun way to see the colonial side of town.

The Olde Town Ghost Walk leans into Newport’s 385-plus years of haunted history and walks you down the shadowy lanes off Washington Square.

It’s a good after-dinner activity, especially with older kids.

22. Bring the Kids to the Red Parrot

Traveling with family? The Red Parrot on Thames is a reliable kid-friendly pick, with a sprawling menu, crayons, and a six-foot macaw mascot for the obligatory photo. It’s lively and easy, the kind of place that keeps everyone happy.

23. Catch the Strawberry Festival at Trinity Church

Each June, Trinity Church on Queen Anne Square throws a free Strawberry Festival built around homemade strawberry shortcake, with live music and local artisans on the lawn.

It’s a sweet, low-key way to spend a summer morning right downtown.

If you happen to time it right, get yourself a delicious bowl and some fresh lemonade at the festival. I can still remember how delicious and refreshing this simple combo was on a hot summer day!

Where to Eat and Drink in Newport

24. Brunch and a Bloody Mary at Stoneacre Brasserie

Start the day at Stoneacre Brasserie on Washington Square. It’s a French-leaning room with soaring beamed ceilings, and weekend brunch comes with a proper Bloody Mary; order the dill-pickle version.

It’s a great place to ease into a Newport morning.

25. Get the Clam Chowder at the Black Pearl

For lunch, the Black Pearl on Bannister’s Wharf is a Newport institution, and its clam chowder has a fair claim to being the best in New England. Order a bowl on the patio and watch the wharf go by.

It’s the most reliable classic-Newport lunch on the harbor.

26. Slurp Oysters at Midtown Oyster Bar

For oysters and a raw bar, Midtown Oyster Bar on Thames Street pulls mostly local Rhode Island and Massachusetts oysters and has a great upstairs deck.

It’s a fun, buzzy spot for a late-afternoon dozen and a drink.

27. Order a Lobster Roll at Top of Newport

Top of Newport, the rooftop bar at the Hotel Viking, serves a classic lobster roll with a view over the bay.

For the lobster roll, head up to Top of Newport, the rooftop bar at the Hotel Viking, and eat one with a view out over Bellevue Avenue and the bay.

It’s the rare rooftop in town, and the view is the reason to go.

28. Grab a Burger and a Harbor View at Benjamin’s

For something casual, walk up the stairs at Benjamin’s on Thames Street. The covered upper deck has one of the best harbor views downtown, and it’s an easy spot for a burger or a plate from the raw bar while you watch the waterfront below.

29. Have Sunset Drinks on the Lawn at Castle Hill Inn

End the day with a drink on the lawn at Castle Hill Inn, where Adirondack chairs run right down to the water and you can nurse a cocktail while the sailboats glide past. You don’t need a dinner reservation to enjoy it; the lawn chairs are first-come, first-served.

Just Outside Newport

30. Cross to Goat Island

Goat Island is a quick hop across a causeway, with knockout harbor views and a lighthouse at the tip. It’s an easy walk or drive for a different angle on the harbor, and a calm spot to watch boats away from the downtown bustle.

31. Day-Trip to Jamestown

Just over the Newport Bridge, Jamestown makes a lovely half-day with Beavertail Lighthouse at its tip and easygoing seafood in the village. It’s quieter than Newport and a great change of pace if you have an extra day.

Newport Vineyards in Middletown runs daily tour-and-tasting experiences across a 100-acre property, with a marketplace and brewery on site. It’s a relaxed afternoon away from the crowds and an easy add-on to a beach or bird-sanctuary morning nearby.

33. Sip Estate Wine at Greenvale Vineyards

Greenvale Vineyards in Portsmouth pours estate-grown wines in a beautiful setting along the Sakonnet River, with live jazz some afternoons. It’s been family-run since the 1800s, and it’s the prettier, sleepier of the two local vineyards.

Planning Your Newport Summer Visit

A little planning goes a long way in summer, when Newport gets busy and parking gets tight.

The honest logistics: on-street pay-by-plate runs 9 a.m. to midnight daily from May through October, and good spots near Thames Street disappear early.

The easiest move is to park once and walk.

The Gateway Center on America’s Cup Avenue is the biggest lot and connects to the seasonal trolley; the Mary Street lot is more central and often overlooked.

Once you’re parked, downtown is very walkable, and the RIPTA trolley links the harbor, Bellevue, and the beaches.

With the right plan, two days is enough to do both.

I managed it on a recent trip through Andalusia, and the pacing took some figuring out. If you want to know what to see, where to eat, and how to spend two days in Seville while immersing yourself in the culture, keep reading.

What to Expect from Two Days in Seville

Seville was the part of my Spain trip that I didn’t plan myself. After the TBEX travel conference in Marbella, a group of us were invited on a familiarization trip: two days in Seville with a local tourism organization, with guides, meals, and accommodations included.

I said yes without thinking twice.

I’m glad I didn’t have to think about it, because Seville won me over almost immediately. It’s modern and lively, with slick hotels, manicured gardens, and good restaurants.

It’s also full of landmarks that have stood for a thousand years. The old and the new sit together more comfortably here than in most cities I know.

Two days isn’t quite enough, and I’ll say that upfront.

But it’s enough to see the river, the markets, and the monuments, enjoy great food and flamenco, and take in some essential experiences.

Here’s how my two days went, so you can build your own version.

Getting to Seville

Seville is easy to reach, whether you come by train, by plane, or by car.

The train is the easiest option for a two-day trip. The fast Renfe AVE train connects Seville to most of Southern Spain, and the city’s Santa Justa station is central enough to walk or grab a short taxi to most hotels.

• From Málaga: about 2.5 hours by car, or 2 hours by the fast Renfe AVE train
• From Granada: about 3 hours by car, or train via Antequera (check Renfe schedules, as direct options vary)
• From Córdoba: 45 minutes by AVE train, worth a stop if you’re passing through
• From Madrid: about 2.5 hours by AVE high-speed train

Many visitors skip the drive and fly straight into Seville. The airport (SVQ) is about 6 miles (10 km) northeast of the center, a 15-minute taxi, about $30 (€28), or a 30-minute ride on the EA airport bus, about $5 (€5).

Ryanair, Vueling, Iberia, British Airways, and others connect Seville across Spain and Europe. If there’s no direct flight from home, connect through Madrid or Barcelona and finish on the fast AVE train.

Once you’re in Seville, you won’t need a car.

The historic center is walkable, with the Cathedral, the Alcázar, and the old quarter all within a few minutes of each other. Triana sits just across the river, a short walk over the bridge.

For anything farther, taxis and rideshares are cheap and easy.

Where to Stay in Seville

My room at the Hotel Macià Sevilla Kubb was conveniently located. The rooftop pool looks out over the city.

I stayed at the Hotel Macià Sevilla Kubb, a four-star hotel a short walk from the Santa Cruz quarter. It’s modern and clean. The rooftop infinity pool earns its keep in the June heat and looks out over the city.

The room wasn’t large, which is normal for a city hotel, but it had a small balcony with a table, and a view to the pool. As a central, comfortable base for two days of sightseeing, it worked well.

Your 2-Day Seville Itinerary at a Glance

Here’s the shape of your 2 days in Seville before the details. The pace is full but doable, with a midday rest during the hottest hours, the way locals do it.

Rough time to budget at each stop: about an hour for the Cathedral and La Giralda, two to three hours for the Alcázar, an hour for the river cruise, and around ninety minutes for the flamenco show. The rest of each day is walking, eating, and the midday break.

Day 1 in Seville: Cathedral, Alcázar, and Plaza de España

Day one stays in the historic center, where Seville’s UNESCO World Heritage sites cluster together. The Cathedral and the Alcázar sit a few minutes’ walk apart.

Between them they cover close to a thousand years, from Moorish rule to the age of New World exploration. You can see both in a morning and still have time for lunch.

Seville Cathedral and La Giralda

Seville’s Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. The stat sounds like guidebook filler until you walk in and feel the size of the space.

You’ll enter through tall wooden doors carved with Gothic detail and studded with handmade nails. Inside, the stained glass glows, the coffered ceilings run high overhead, and a carved pipe organ anchors the nave. The art collection includes work by Spanish masters like Murillo and Goya.

The altarpiece is the largest in Christendom. Tucked in here, too, is the tomb attributed to Christopher Columbus, carried by four bronze figures that represent the kingdoms of Spain.

La Giralda, the bell tower, started as the minaret of the mosque that stood here before the cathedral. Curved, crested, and covered in intricate brickwork, it reminded me of the campanile at St. Mark’s in Venice. It’s not quite cake frosting, but it’s close.

You climb it by a series of ramps instead of stairs, built so the muezzin, the man who called the faithful to prayer, could ride a horse to the top.

The reward is a wide view over the city, worth the entry fee on a clear day.

From the cathedral, the walk continues through Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter, on the way to the Alcázar.

It’s a maze of narrow, whitewashed lanes draped in bougainvillea, with tiled doorways and small plazas that turn up where you don’t expect them.

The Real Alcázar

The Real Alcázar is a royal palace that’s been in continuous use since the 10th century, and it was the stop I’d go back to first.

Orange trees in the courtyards echo the warm hues of the buildings. Inside, the craftsmanship is staggering. You’ll find arches and columns, keyhole windows and balconies, and gold and green and deep blue tilework.

All of it is composed so beautifully that the whole reads as a single piece of art.

The Patio de las Doncellas, with its pointed arches, carved plaster, and a long reflecting pool, is the architectural high point. Skip-the-line tickets are worth it in high season.

What struck me most about this place was what I’ll call the “layering.” Andalusia has a strong identity of its own, but it sits over and through centuries of Islamic culture, and nowhere is that clearer than here. You could close your eyes and easily believe you were in Morocco.

It’s easy to imagine the royalty who once lived inside these walls. In fact, today, Spanish officials still use this palace when they are in Seville. I

f the Alhambra in Granada impressed you, and it will, the Alcázar shows how that same Moorish style was adapted by the Christian kings who followed.

The Ambassadors’ Hall dome and the carved Moorish arches inside the Real Alcázar are breathtakingly detailed with tiles.

The gardens behind the palace are worth an hour on their own, with tile-lined walkways, hedge mazes, and hidden fountains. If you’ve watched Game of Thrones, you’ll recognize the Dorne scenes filmed here.

Look for the Balcón de Rosina, a corner balcony in nearby Plaza de Alfaro that legend ties to Rossini’s opera The Barber of Seville. The building is newer than the opera, so it’s more story than fact, but it’s a fun one.

Lunch at Restaurante Ispal

Stepping into Restaurante Ispal for a long, local lunch proves to be rewarding.

Lunch at Restaurante Ispal, won’t be the traditional Spanish meal you might expect, but it will delight you just the same.

The experience is a refined, multi-course meal built around ingredients grown, raised, or caught in the province. Even the name is local: Ispal is what the Phoenicians and Romans called Seville.

Here, the cuisine may be inspired by heritage, but takes on an elevated spin, artfully plated. The food is delicious, and the ambiance is relaxed, not stuffy.

If you want one nicer meal in Seville, I’d spend it here. Reserve ahead, especially for lunch.

Plaza de España at Golden Hour

The Plaza de España at golden hour was one of my favorite stops of the Seville trip.

The scale is hard to take in at first: a long curved facade, painted tile alcoves down its length, and bridges arcing over a shallow canal. The ornate details are reminiscent of St. Marks in Venice in some ways, but it’s not quite cake frosting.

Walk the perimeter on a warm evening, when plenty of locals are doing the same, and it never feels crowded. Go at golden hour if you can. The low light turns the tilework gold, which is also the best time for photos.

The plaza was built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. It has since stood in for the planet Naboo in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and for British Army headquarters in Lawrence of Arabia.

While I was there there, a woman started dancing flamenco on one of the landings. She wore red and black, with hard-soled shoes, and moved in time to a drumbeat while a small crowd formed. It wasn’t part of any program.

Almost a hundred years on, you’ll find people still use the plaza the way it was built to be used.

A Walk Through Parque de María Luisa

The plaza sits inside Parque de María Luisa, and the park earns its own slow loop. The park was laid out for the same 1929 exposition as the plaza, and you can still see it in the tiled benches, the fountains, and the small hidden plazas among the trees.

The park runs cooler than the open plaza, and it’s free, so it’s a good place to slow down and reset in the heat. On a hot afternoon, it’s worth building in time here to walk slowly, find a shaded bench, and let the pace drop before the next stop.

It’s one of the largest green spaces in the city.

Dinner at Mercado Lonja del Barranco

For dinner, head to the Mercado Lonja del Barranco, a riverside food hall in an iron-and-glass building beside the Puente de Triana.

You can graze on tapas or build a full spread from different stalls and carry it to shared tables. There are enough stalls that it’s worth walking the whole place once before you order.

Eating at a shared table, passing plates and talking, is how a lot of meals work in Spain. The hall stays open past midnight, so there’s no need to rush. Remember, dinner in Spain between 9 and 10pm, so you’ll be in good company.

Day 2 in Seville: Triana, the River, and Flamenco

Day two starts across the river in Triana, so plan an early start.

Triana is the old working-class neighborhood on the west bank of the Guadalquivir. It’s the birthplace of flamenco and the center of Seville’s ceramics tradition, and it feels different from the historic center.

The day here runs from hands-on craft in the morning to a flamenco show at night.

Triana and a Tile-Making Workshop

After painting an azulejo tile at a Triana workshop, I was excited to add the finished piece to my travel souvenirs.

After seeing azulejo tiles all over Seville, from palace walls to walking paths to street signs, you can try your hand at making your own. Head over to Barroazul, a traditional ceramics studio in Triana to paint one by hand.

An instructor will shows you how the tiles are made with stamps and paint, and then you’ll choose your own design.

I painted two tiles, a small sun and a cross, and the studio fired and shipped them home They’re among my favorite souvenirs from the trip.

Mercado de Triana

A few steps from the workshops is the Mercado de Triana, built on the foundations of the old Castle of San Jorge. You can still see the ruins through glass panels in the floor.

It’s a working neighborhood market, with traditional stalls and a few newer tapas counters.

The stalls are piled with olives, hanging legs of jamón (cured Spanish ham), wheels of Manchego, and the morning’s fresh fish.

Even a quick walk through is worth it to see locals doing their daily shopping and pick up a snack.

A Cruise on the Guadalquivir

Glide peacefully past the Torre del Oro on the electric eco-cruise along the Guadalquivir.

A river cruise is an easy way to see Seville from the water, and a smart move in the afternoon heat. You can even book a short eco-cruise online before you arrive.

Guadaluxe‘s boats are electric and nearly silent, so there’s no engine noise to talk over.

There’s a bar on board if you want a drink (bring cash), and you get a slow loop past the landmarks, including the Torre del Oro, the 13th-century watchtower on the bank.

The pace is relaxed and easy, which feels about right as the temperatures begin to rise.

Guadaluxe runs trips through the day, so book one for the early afternoon, when walking gets uncomfortable, and use the hour to sit and cool off.

Lunch at Casa Montalván

Fried tapas and octopus over potato at Casa Montalván make for a delicious lunch in Seville.

Stop for lunch at Casa Montalván, which is in a former ceramics factory in Triana. You’ll notice the original tilework is still in place.

If Ispal was the modern tasting menu, Casa Montalván is traditional side. You’ll enjoy classic Andalusian cooking, done well, in a room that feels like authentic Seville.

This is a delicious place for a lunch break, and the dishes seem to keep coming.

Afterwards, head back to the hotel for an afternoon rest. The siesta is a real habit here, and it makes sense in the hottest part of the day, so it’s smart to build one into your own plan.

Flamenco at El Palacio Andaluz

In the evening, head over to El Palacio Andaluz for a percussion workshop before the show. It’s a popular venue, so you’ll want to book ahead. Music runs through everything in Southern Spain, flamenco most of all.

You’ll learn the rhythmic handclapping, called palmas, and try the cajón, the flamenco box-drum. It’s a playful, hands-on lesson, and a good warm-up for the performance. You’ll appreciate it even more.

The show follows, with a tapas tasting included.

El Palacio Andaluz is a theatre-style tablao, more cabaret than back room, with a proper stage. The flamenco dancer wear bright dresses, synching their movements to the guitar, hand-clapping, castanets, and the percussion of their own shoes.

They work up a real sweat and the performance is passionate! The footwork is fast and precise, and you can see how much timing and strength it takes.

The stamping comes up through the floor, reverberates in your gut, and the palmas and guitar fill the room.

Even without words, a passionate story comes through.

The flamenco show is a high note to end a full 2 day Seville itinerary.

Where to Eat in Seville (Tapas Bars and Beyond)

Seville’s food scene leans on tapas. Unlike Granada, you usually pay for them here rather than getting them free with a drink, but the quality is high and the portions are generous.

The city runs on small plates, cold beer, and late dinners that don’t start until around 9 or 10:00 PM.

Over two days I ate across the range, from a tasting menu to a riverside food hall to a traditional Andalusian lunch. Here are my recommendations:

• Restaurante Ispal for a refined, hyper-local, elevated tasting menu when you want a special meal.
• Mercado Lonja del Barranco for a casual, graze-and-share food hall by the river. Walk every stall first.
• Casa Montalván in Triana for traditional Andalusian cooking in a tiled former ceramics factory.

For neighborhood tapas anywhere in the center, one rule will serves you well: Ask for the tapa of the day (tapa del día). It’s usually the freshest option and the best value, and the good bars are often a street or two back from the big monuments.

Be sure to check for current prices before you go. Seville costs a bit more for food than Granada, but it’s still well under Barcelona or Madrid.

How Much Does 2 Days in Seville Cost?

2 days in Seville is reasonably priced. Here’s what the main things run, so you can plan ahead. Prices are approximate and worth checking before you book.

Outside of lodging, plan on roughly $150 to $200 per person for two days of sights, meals, and a show. Book the Alcázar and any flamenco show ahead, since the popular slots sell out.

How Many Days Do You Need in Seville?

Two days is enough to see Seville’s highlights, and that’s how long I had.

In that time you can cover the Cathedral and La Giralda, the Alcázar, Santa Cruz, the Plaza de España, Triana, and a flamenco show without feeling like you missed the essentials. And, you’ll have immersed yourself in some of Seville’s most meaninful cultural experiences.

The honest catch is the pace.

Two days means moving briskly. We also lost the first half-day to the drive from the coast, so plan around that. Arrive the night before if you can, or book two nights so you get two full days instead of a day and a half.

If you can spare it, three days is the sweet spot. It covers the same sights at a slower pace and leaves room for a day trip, since Seville makes an easy base.

Córdoba is about 45 minutes away by fast train, and Cádiz and the white hill towns are within reach. You’re also closer to Portugal than you’d think. The border sits about 90 miles (145 km) west, so the Algarve is doable on a longer stay.

In the end, it comes down to your goals. Plan two days for an efficient first visit, three or more if you’d rather slow down and wander.

What I’d Do With More Time

Two days covered the highlights, but if I went back, a few things would make the trip even better.

• I’d read up on the Moors and Andalusian history first. The Islamic influence is everywhere in the architecture, especially at the Alcázar, and it all means more once you understand the history behind it.
• I’d also leave time to wander the quieter backstreets with no plan, the slow kind of exploring that two packed days don’t allow.
• And I’d go beyond watching flamenco. Seville has beginner classes and flamenco-dress photo sessions, and even if you’re not especially coordinated (I’m not), it looks like a fun way to step into the tradition for an hour.
• I’d also make time for Las Setas de Sevilla, the giant wooden Metropol Parasol in the old town. You can walk across the top for a view over the rooftops, and it’s a change of pace from all the old monuments.

Final Thoughts on 2 Days in Seville

What stayed with me about Seville wasn’t any single attraction. It was how layered the city feels, with Moorish influence running through the architecture and the food, sitting easily beside Gothic stone and modern life.

Andalusia has its own strong identity, with North Africa close under the surface, and that mix is what makes it worth the trip.

Seville also feels lived-in, not staged for visitors. If you’re planning 2 days in Seville, book at least two nights, rest at siesta in the warm months, and save your energy for the evenings. That’s when the plazas fill and the city feels most like itself.

The history of the Camino de Santiago stretches back more than a thousand years. The routes grew up around the shrine in Santiago de Compostela, said to hold the remains of the apostle Saint James.

By the Middle Ages, they were among the most traveled pilgrimage roads in Europe.

Walk them today and you are following the same paths pilgrims have worn smooth since the ninth century.

This ancient network of trails stretches across Europe and draws huge numbers of people each year, from Catholics and non-religious walkers to seasoned athletes and total beginners.

There is a Camino de Santiago route suitable to you, and whether you choose the popular Camino Frances or the coastal Camino Portugués, every route lets your body work the way it should while giving your mind a real break from stress.

You don’t have to plan every step yourself, either.

You can opt for a guided route that hands off the logistics so you can just walk. I’ve experiencesd several guided walking tours in various countries, and my only job was to follow the path. A guided Camino route gives you the same.

Here’s the part that surprises people: you don’t need to arrive fit.

The Camino builds the fitness for you, one ordinary day at a time, and that steady daily walking turns out to be one of the best things you can do for your body.

On a walking holiday like this, the days feel long, but your body learns to love the steady movement. Most people walk the Camino independently, the way you might tackle a self-guided walking tour, moving from one village to the next and covering 9 to 16 miles (15 to 25 km) a day.

Your legs get stronger, your heart works better, and your lungs open up.

A single day on the Camino builds real stamina, and it does it without heavy weights, a gym membership, or a complicated routine.

All that walking also resets your habits.

After a long stretch of miles, you crave simple, hearty meals. You sleep harder too, tired but satisfied.

Even my short walk after dinner helps me drop off faster at night, and days of steady walking take that to another level.

Even if you crave solitude, stay open to the way the Camino pulls people together. Whether you walk the Camino Francés or the Camino Inglés, these routes mix travelers from all over the world.

Everyone is headed to the same place, Santiago, so conversation comes easily and friendships form fast.

There is a particular kind of talk that only seems to happen shoulder to shoulder on a walk. Some of the best conversations I have had came on a path rather than across a table, the steady movement loosening things up until whatever has been weighing on you finally comes out.

The Camino hands you days of that, with old friends or people you only just met.

On the path, you might share snacks, trade blister advice, and celebrate the small wins together. A simple “Buen Camino” is often all it takes to start something.

How to Start Walking the Camino de Santiago

Ready to get started? Walking the Camino de Santiago takes a bit of planning, but less than you’d think.

To simplify things, you can opt for a guided tour, but these steps will inform your decision. Here are six steps that take you from idea to your first day on the trail.

1. Decide Which Camino Route Is Right for You

The first step to walking the Camino de Santiago is to choose a route. The routes are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and each one has its own length, character, and crowd. You’ll want to consider these factors, along with your ambitions and ability, to pick the route that’s best for you.

Here is how the main Camino de Santiago routes compare:

2. Choose Your Starting Point

Once you pick a route, next pick a starting point.

To earn the Compostela, the certificate handed out in Santiago, you need to walk at least the final 62 miles (100 km) into the city, which is why so many first-timers begin in Sarria on the Camino Francés, about 70 miles (111 km) out.

3. Get Your Paperwork in Order

Pick up a credencial, the pilgrim passport, before you set off.

You’ll collect a stamp or two each day from albergues, cafés, and churches along the way. Those stamps are what prove your journey at the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago. Aim for two a day over the final stretch.

4. Rough in Your Stays

For sleeping arrangements, you can stay in albergues, the simple pilgrim hostels that run the length of the route. Or, you can book private guesthouses and small hotels when you want a real bed and a door that closes. In the busy summer months, it’s smart to reserve ahead.

5. Budget & Timing

On budget, a night in an albergue plus a pilgrim menu dinner runs roughly $33 to $50 (€30 to €45) a day, so plan on more if you prefer private rooms.

For weather and company, spring and early fall hit the sweet spot. Summer brings heat and crowds, and parts of the higher routes quiet down or close in winter.

6. What to Pack and How to Prep

You don’t need much, but a few things make or break the walk:

• Broken-in shoes or trail runners, never anything new out of the box.
• A sock system that heads off blisters: a thin liner under a cushioned wool sock.

It’s just a short walk from the ferry in Oak Bluffs, with calm water on one side and a long history behind it. The beach itself is narrow. What surrounds it is the reason to come.

What Inkwell Beach Is, and Why It Matters

Inkwell Beach, Martha’s Vineyard, is a public beach on the Nantucket Sound side of Oak Bluffs.

Here, the water is calm, it’s centrally located, and the whole place is a short walk from downtown and the ferry. It’s free to visit, and lifeguards watch the water in summer.

Inkwell Beach is far more than a stretch of sand. For generations, it has been a gathering place for Oak Bluffs’ African American summer community and remains one of the most important cultural landmarks on Martha’s Vineyard

You can come for an easy swim, but the setting is what makes it worth the stop.

Where Is Inkwell Beach, and How to Get There

You’ll find Inkwell Beach on Seaview Avenue, facing north across Nantucket Sound. Because it faces the sound rather than the open Atlantic, the water stays calm. On a clear day you may be able to see Cape Cod across Nantucket Sound.

It’s easy enough to get there. Here are three ways:

• Walk from the ferry. The Steamship Authority dock in Oak Bluffs is less than a 10-minute walk. Follow the waterfront and you’ll reach the beach.
• Drive. From Vineyard Haven, take Beach Road toward Oak Bluffs (about 10 minutes). From Edgartown, take the Edgartown-Oak Bluffs Road (about 15 minutes). Street parking on Seaview Avenue fills up fast, so you’ll want to arrive early.
• Take the bus. The VTA runs routes from Vineyard Haven and Edgartown into Oak Bluffs, and the stop near the ferry terminal puts you within an easy walk.

You’ll sometimes see the beach marked on maps as Oak Bluffs Town Beach. Both names point to the same stretch of sand, though Inkwell is the name that has stuck.

The History Behind Inkwell Beach

The name Inkwell dates to the early 20th century.

The most widely cited account is that “the Inkwell” started as a derogatory reference to the skin color of the Black beachgoers who gathered here. The community later reclaimed the name, and today it is widely used and embraced.

Some also tie it to the Black writers and intellectuals who summered in Oak Bluffs.

Oak Bluffs is one of the oldest African American summer communities in the United States. Black families began coming to the town in the late 1800s, and by the early 20th century a growing community of homeowners, year-round residents, and small business owners had taken root here.

In 1912, Charles and Henrietta Shearer opened Shearer Cottage in the Oak Bluffs Highlands. It became the island’s oldest African American-owned inn and a haven for Black travelers during the Jim Crow era, when they were turned away from lodging elsewhere.

The inn was listed in the Green Book, the travel guide that helped Black motorists find safe accommodations throughout the United States during segregation.

Guests over the years included Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Ethel Waters, Paul Robeson, and many other prominent African American artists, writers, and political leaders.

The African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard, created in 1998, connects Inkwell Beach to Shearer Cottage and other significant sites across the island. The trail is a good way to understand this history as a living thread through the Vineyard rather than a chapter that closed.

This part of the island’s story isn’t sealed off in the past. When you visit, you’re walking through a living community, not a museum exhibit.

The best way to understand it is to follow the African American Heritage Trail and the voices that tell this history firsthand.

What to Expect at Inkwell Beach, Martha’s Vineyard

When I visited Inkwell Beach, Martha’s Vineyard, what struck me wasn’t the size of the beach. Inkwell is a essentially a strip of sand along Seaview Avenue. It runs a long way, but it’s narrow, more roadside than wide and sweeping.

Parking runs right beside it and you’ll see a few benches are perched up on the sidewalk. If you’re lucky, you can have a seat and enjoy the view across the sound, which is wide open and lovely.

But besides the history, what makes it memorable is the setting.

The water is calm and shallow, with a small jetty, making it a good fit for young kids and nervous swimmers. A lifeguard chair overlooks the beach, with lifeguards typically on duty during the summer season. If you’re visiting in the shoulder season, you may find the chair empty, so swim accordingly.

The beach, the park across the street, the ferry, and downtown Oak Bluffs all feel connected, like one easy walkable pocket of the island.

So don’t come expecting a big destination beach. Come for the convenience, the calm water, the history, and the setting.

In that respect, Inkwell delivers.

If you want a wide, sandy expanse, you’ll find that elsewhere on the Vineyard, but you’ll give up this front-row spot in the middle of town.

Ocean Park, Right Across the Street

Cross Seaview Avenue from the beach and you reach Ocean Park. It’s a big part of what makes Inkwell worth the stop.

The park is a wide, green space with a classic gazebo at its center. It a classic New England town green with the bandstand anchoring the town green.

When I was there, the scene was easy and unhurried.

Teenagers gathered around the gazebo. A man sat reading on a bench under a tree. People strolled the paths or cut down a side street toward Circuit Avenue. The park is spacious and dotted with people, but never crowded.

I imagine that changes as the season picks up.

The edges hold your eye, with bright, colorful Victorian homes ringing the park. Old-fashioned lamp posts with double globes line the walkways, accented by lovely flower beds. And the whole thing opens to a sweeping, clear view down to the water.

It feels festive and a little timeless at the same time.

Best of all, it’s an easy walk from the ferry terminal. You can step off the boat, wander through Ocean Park, cross to the beach, and be downtown for lunch without ever moving your car.

Inkwell Beach Parking, Facilities, and Tips

Parking

Street parking runs right along Seaview Avenue, but spaces fill quickly in summer. You’ll want to arrive before 10 a.m. and observe any posted restrictions, or plan to park further out and walk.

You can sometimes find additional parking at on the streets surrounding Ocean Park and near the harbor, about a five-minute walk to the beach.

Facilities

Public restrooms are available nearby along the waterfront. They’re seasonal, so check ahead if you’re visiting in the off-season. The Ferry station also has public restrooms.

You won’t find any showers at Inkwell Beach, so plan to rinse off when you arrive back at your rental or hotel.

And while there are no food vendors on the sand, Circuit Avenue and the harbor restaurants are only a short walk away. Seasonal vendors occasionally set up nearby, too.

Tips for Visiting Inkwell Beach

Here are a few tips you’ll find useful when you’re planning a visit to Inkwell Beach:

• Bring an umbrella or beach tent. Shade is limited on the sand itself.
• Low tide exposes a wider beach, so check the tide chart if you want more room.
• The beach faces north, so it gets afternoon sun but loses direct light earlier than south-facing beaches.
• You won’t catch a sunset over the water here. For that, head up-island to Menemsha or the Aquinnah Cliffs.

Where to Eat Near Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs

Because Inkwell sits at the edge of downtown, food is never more than a few minutes away. There’s no need to pack a cooler unless you prefer to.

Here are a few spots close to the beach:

• Slice of Life serves breakfast and lunch in big portions, with a strong local following. Go early for brunch on weekends.
• Nancy’s does harbor-deck dining with seafood, sushi, and a raw bar. The deck has water views, and there’s a kids’ menu.
• Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company is casual seafood near the harbor, with reliable chowder and a generous lobster roll.
• Back Door Donuts is the famous late-night window at the back of the bakery. The apple fritters are worth the line.
• The Circuit Avenue ice cream shops are all within a couple of blocks. A post-beach cone is standard practice in Oak Bluffs.

For a sit-down dinner after a beach day, the Circuit Avenue and harbor restaurants tend to handle walk-ins more easily than Edgartown’s tighter reservation scene.

Final Thoughts on Inkwell Beach, Martha’s Vineyard

Inkwell Beach, Martha’s Vineyard is a small beach with a big story.

The calm water and the central location would make it worth a stop on their own. The history, and the community that has gathered here for generations, make it something more.

Pull over, spend an hour, wander Ocean Park, and walk into town for lunch. Time permitting, follow the Heritage Trail to see how this part of the island’s story connects.

Just don’t judge Inkwell by the width of the beach. The point was never the sand.

It covers what I did, what it cost, and what I’d change on a second trip. Keep reading for the 2-day itinerary that makes a short Athens stop count.

Why Two Days in Athens Works

On Day 1, I walked the Acropolis before the crowds arrived, on a press tour that got me through the gates at first entry. On Day 2, I wandered the neighborhoods, found a rooftop with a Parthenon view, and took a food tour that changed how I think about Greek food.

Athens doesn’t need a week, although you could easily fill it. It needs two focused days and a willingness to walk. The historic center is small, and the big sights sit within a short walk of each other.

If you’re passing through on the way to the islands or the mainland, this is the itinerary that makes those two days count.

Athens 2-Day Itinerary at a Glance

Day 1: The Pristine Parthenon Tour

I joined the Pristine Parthenon Tour by Walks, and it delivered. The idea is simple: get to the top of the Acropolis for the first viewing of the day, before the crowds.

You get skip-the-line tickets, an expert guide, and a pace that lets you actually look at what you’re seeing.

We met at 7:30 AM near the Acropolis, about a 10-minute walk from most Plaka hotels. The tour ran roughly three hours.

By 10:30 AM, I’d seen more than some see in a day.

The tour included the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Monumental Gateway, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Theater of Dionysus, and the Theater of Herodes Atticus. Better yet, it was all in morning light before the mid-day heat and with manageable crowds.

What Made the Tour Worth It

• First entry timing. By 10 AM the Acropolis was packed, and we were already on our way down. The gap between 7:30 AM and 10 AM up there is the difference between experiencing the Parthenon and being herded past it.
• The guide. Three hours of context turned columns and rubble into stories. I learned more about Athenian democracy on that walk than I retained from any textbook.
• Skip-the-line access. In peak season, the regular ticket line can take 30 to 45 minutes. We walked straight in.

The New Acropolis Museum

The tour included a guided visit to the New Acropolis Museum after the Acropolis itself.

The museum sits at the base of the hill, and the top floor lines up exactly with the Parthenon above. You can see the temple through the glass walls while standing among the friezes and sculptures that once decorated it.

Three things are worth your time inside:

• The Parthenon Marbles gallery on the top floor
• The Caryatids from the Erechtheion (the originals, not the copies you saw on the hill)
• The underground excavations visible through the glass floor in the lobby.

The museum is modern and well organized, and it doesn’t need more than 60 to 90 minutes. But plan longer if you want to browse the gift shop and bring home a souvenir.

If you’re going on your own, the Acropolis costs €30 ($33) with timed entry, and the Acropolis Museum is a separate €20 ($22). No single ticket covers both, since the hill and the museum are run by different organizations. The €30 ($33) Acropolis combo bundles other ancient sites for five days (the Roman Agora, Hadrian’s Library, and more), but not the museum. You can check hours and tickets on the official Acropolis Museum site before you go.

Afternoon in the Plaka and Monastiraki

After the Acropolis and the museum, the rest of Day 1 was free, so I walked.

Athens is a walking city if you stay in the historic center, and the Plaka, at the base of the Acropolis, is where most visitors end up. You’ll find narrow streets, neoclassical buildings, souvenir shops (some tacky, some not), and a taverna on every corner.

From the Plaka, I wandered into Monastiraki. The flea market area mixes antique shops, street vendors, and cafes with rooftop terraces.

If you want the photo of the Acropolis lit up at sunset with a drink in your hand, this is where you find it. The rooftop bars around Monastiraki Square all compete for the best view.

What to See on the Walk

• Hadrian’s Library. You can glimpse it from the street, but the small entry fee (about €6/$7 in summer, €3/$3 in winter, or covered by the €30/$33 multi-site combo) is worth it to stand right among the columns. Unlike Rome’s Colosseum, where you’re kept back from the stone (understandably), here you’re up close.
• The Roman Agora and Tower of the Winds. Worth a stop if you have a combination ticket.
• Anafiotika. My Greek friend told me there was one place in Athens worth working into my itinerary, and she was right. Tucked into the hillside beneath the Acropolis, Anafiotika was built by workers from the Cycladic island of Anafi in the 1800s. Whitewashed homes, stone paths, blue shutters, flower pots, and cats make it feel more like a Greek island village than part of a capital city. It’s small, easy to explore, and one of the places I remember most clearly from Athens.

Day 2: Markets, Neighborhoods, and Rooftop Views

Day 2 had no agenda, and that was the point. After the structured Parthenon tour, I wanted a day of wandering. I started with coffee near Syntagma Square and set out on foot.

One thing that surprised me about Athens was how quickly the neighborhoods changed.

• Syntagma Square is the city’s transportation and civic hub.
• Plaka sits beneath the Acropolis and is full of tavernas, shops, and winding lanes.
• Monastiraki is busier, with rooftop bars, markets, and constant activity.
• A few blocks farther, Psyri feels more local, with cafés, apartments, street art, and nightlife.

You can walk between all four in less than 30 minutes, but each has its own personality.

I spent most of the morning exploring on foot. You can cross from Kolonaki, which is upscale and good for coffee, to Psyri, with its street art, younger crowd, and busy bar scene, in about 30 minutes.

Athens is smaller and more walkable than many first-time visitors expect.

I returned to Athens after my Delphi and Meteora 2-Day Guided Tour and spent a few nights in a small apartment in Psyri.

Before sunrise, I could hear vendors setting up the weekend flea market below my balcony. (Greeks aren’t known for doing things quietly.) By the time I was making coffee, the neighborhood was already awake.

At night, I could see the Acropolis glowing on the hill in the distance. Staying in Psyri gave me a glimpse of Athens beyond the major sights and made the city feel more alive.

If you have time and energy left, two stops near Syntagma are easy to add. The National Garden is a quiet green break that most tourists skip, and the marble Panathenaic Stadium, home of the first modern Olympics in 1896, sits a short walk beyond it. You can walk onto the stadium track for a few euros.

The Athens Food Tour

If you do one organized thing in Athens beyond the Acropolis, make it a food tour.

Greek food runs on a different set of rules than what most of us picture as “Greek food.” The pita, the olive oil, and the cheese are all different. And the way Greeks eat, communally and slowly over small plates or meze, is something a tour teaches you in a way a menu never will.

My tour ran about three to four hours through the city center, stopping at bakeries, cheese shops, the Varvakios central market, and small restaurants I’d never have found on my own.

It was the best single investment of my two days.

A half-day Athens food tour like this runs about €65 to €95 ($70 to $105) per person, which buys a string of stops and tastings you’d never line up on your own.

Where to Stay in Athens: The Marblous Hotel

I stayed at The Marblous on Voulis Street, a short walk from Syntagma Square and the Plaka. It’s a small, modern hotel in the absolute center, with rates that run roughly €110 to €240 ($120 to $260) a night depending on the season. I checked in after a late flight via Istanbul and checked out two mornings later before the Delphi tour.

What worked:

• Location. Voulis Street puts you within a 10-minute walk of the Acropolis, Syntagma Square, the Plaka, and Monastiraki. You don’t need transport.
• Breakfast included. A standard European spread of eggs, bread, cheese, olives, and strong coffee. It’s enough fuel for a morning of walking.
• A restaurant downstairs. There’s a small restaurant on the ground floor, handy for a meal or a drink without heading back out.
• Modern and clean. The rooms are small but well designed, with a good bed, a decent bathroom, and reliable Wi-Fi.
• A thoughtful touch. A small welcome gift waited on the mirrored vanity: a bottle of nail polish. An unexpected, slightly quirky detail you don’t usually get at this price.

What I’d flag:

• Smaller rooms. They’re fine for two nights, but if you’re used to big, American hotel rooms, this will feel cramped. Ask for a room with a balcony. For a longer stay, you’d probably want more space.
• Street noise. Voulis Street is central, which means foot traffic and a city that stays up late. If you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs or ask for an interior room.

Would I book it again? For a two-night Athens stay, yes. The location is hard to beat and the price was reasonable. Also, the marble throughout the hotel was gorgeous.

For a longer stay, I’d rent an apartment for more room and a kitchen.

I’d hoped to find one in the Plaka or Kolonaki, but I booked too late and options were limited. Instead, I rented the Ancient Agora Apartments in Psyri, and it worked out perfectly.

Getting Around Athens: Athens City Guide

Athens has a metro, buses, and trams, but for a two-day visit focused on the historic center, you can walk almost everything. The Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma Square, and Psyri all sit within about a 15-minute walk of each other. I didn’t take a single bus or metro ride during my two days.

Getting from the Airport

Athens International Airport sits about 30 to 40 minutes from the center. The metro runs straight from the airport to Syntagma Square, and a taxi is the simplest option if you land late, when the metro isn’t running.

What I’d Do Differently on a Second Trip

I’d plan a few things differently next time:

• Add a third day. Two days covered the essentials, but a third would have made room for the National Archaeological Museum, a half-day trip to Cape Sounion, or a slow afternoon doing nothing. Athens earns the extra day.
• Take the food tour earlier. I did it on Day 2, which meant I ate one full Athens dinner without its guidance. Earlier in the trip would have improved every meal that followed, and it would have acclimated me to the neighborhoods from the start.
• Stay up later. Athens comes alive after 10 PM. Jet lag from the Istanbul layover had me crashing early both nights. Next time I’d plan a late dinner in the Plaka and a rooftop drink in Monastiraki.

Final Thoughts on 2 Days in Athens

Athens had a reputation for years as a city people passed through on the way to somewhere else. Economic struggles, graffiti, and stories of decline seemed to dominate the conversation. That’s not the city I found.

I found lively neighborhoods, excellent food, welcoming people, and layers of history woven into everyday life. One moment you’re standing on the Acropolis looking out over the city. The next you’re wandering through Anafiotika, a neighborhood that feels like a Greek island village hidden beneath it.

Yes, the Acropolis is worth the trip. But Athens turned out to be much more than a gateway to the rest of Greece.

Start with the Parthenon at first entry. End with the food tour. Walk everything in between. And don’t skip the rooftop drink at sunset, because the Acropolis lit up against a pink sky is the image that stays with you.

Mexico spans 32 states, and safety varies between them as much as it does between US states. The 25 destinations below cover 11 of the safer ones, from Level 1 Yucatan to the well-protected tourist corridors of the Pacific coast.

Each entry comes from a travel writer who knows the place firsthand, with safety context updated for June 2026.

Is Mexico Safe Right Now? (2026)

The short answer: yes, in the right places and with the right habits. As of its May 29, 2026 update, the US State Department rates Mexico at Level 2 of 4 overall: exercise increased caution.

Advisory levels and conditions change throughout the year. Check the current State Department Mexico Travel Advisory before you book, and again before you travel. Everything below reflects the May 29, 2026 update.

That single rating hides big differences between states. Six states sit at Level 4, do not travel: Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. None of the 25 destinations below are in those states.

Four states on this list carry a Level 3 advisory, reconsider travel: Jalisco, Guanajuato, Sonora, and Chiapas. The details matter, though. In each case the restrictions target specific corridors or border zones, not the destinations featured here. Puerto Vallarta, for example, has no travel restrictions at all. Wherever a Level 3 state appears below, a 2026 safety check note spells out the specifics.

At the other end, Yucatan state, home to Merida, Valladolid, and El Cuyo, is one of only two states rated Level 1, exercise normal precautions. That’s the State Department’s lowest risk level.

One practical layer no advisory replaces: travel insurance with solid medical coverage, like SafetyWing. Mexican hospitals often require payment in full before they release patients, so coverage matters more here than in most places.

One more 2026 note: Mexico co-hosts the FIFA World Cup in June and July, with matches in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Expect bigger crowds, higher prices, and extra security in and around the host cities this summer.

Is Cancun Safe Right Now?

Yes. Cancun is safe to visit right now for travelers who stay in tourist zones and use resort-town common sense.

Quintana Roo, the state that includes Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Isla Mujeres, carries a Level 2 advisory in 2026, exercise increased caution, with no travel restrictions.

The label is earned, though: the advisory notes that shootings between rival gangs have injured bystanders and that crime happens in tourist and non-tourist areas alike.

The practical version: stay in well-lit pedestrian and tourist zones after dark, keep an eye on your surroundings, and skip street-hailed cabs.

What Makes Mexico “Unsafe”?

Wherever you travel in the world, it’s important to be a smart traveler and be safety conscious.

But let’s not deny this: There are some safety issues in Mexico that you can’t overlook as a traveler.

Cartel and gang activity, and the violent crime that comes with it, drives most of the risk, and it concentrates along trafficking corridors and certain border zones.

According to the US Department of State, some areas of Mexico carry an increased risk of crime and kidnapping, and most homicides are targeted attacks within criminal organizations rather than crimes against visitors.

Yet, Mexico is also one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Better yet, it can be safely enjoyed.

Some of the things you can look forward to when you visit include:

1. See Our Lady Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a popular port of call on Mexican Riviera cruises. 

Located on the Bay of Banderas on the Pacific Ocean, Puerto Vallarta was made famous by the 1964 Night of the Iguana movie. 

But is it safe to visit?

This Pacific Coast Mexican city has a relatively low crime rate for a destination of its size. 

Mexican cruise port cities often have a heavy police presence when ships are in port. By doing their best to prevent crime, they ensure the cruise ships keep coming and bringing thousands of passengers ready to spend money on their port day.

While the city has five different zones, visitors flock to El Centro or the downtown area and Zona Romantica, also known as the Romantic Zone. 

The Romantic Zone comprises hotel resorts and trendy beachfront restaurants known to be LGBT-friendly. It’s a great place to grab a drink and authentic Mexican food.

If you’re looking for inexpensive souvenirs, the Isla del Rio Cuale offers a low-key shopping experience under the shade of the large banyan trees.

Across the Cuale River, El Centro, or downtown encompasses the tourist area. 

Here, the Malecon meanders along the waterfront, dotted with whimsical and beautiful sculptures. A short walk from the Malecon, Our Lady Guadalupe cathedral dominates the skyline of Puerto Vallarta.

Named as “one of the most endearing” structures in the city, a large crown adorns the church’s clock tower. 

While still a place of worship, you can go inside Our Lady Guadalupe and admire its magnificent architecture.

The initial church was constructed in 1883, but the one seen today dates from 1903. However, it wasn’t completed for another 37 years. 

The city has replaced its “crowning” glory a few times. The original crown succumbed to erosion, the 2nd destroyed by an earthquake, and the 2009 replacement still remains.

2026 safety check: Jalisco state carries a Level 3 advisory, but the US State Department places no travel restrictions on Puerto Vallarta or the neighboring Riviera Nayarit. The same applies to boat-access Yelapa below, which shares Banderas Bay.

2. Merida

Is Merida Mexico safe?

You’ll be happy to know Merida is often cited as the safest city in Mexico. 

Once a hidden gem, this Yucatan Peninsula city is getting more and more popular for tourists and expats moving to Mexico with each passing year.

It is well known as a destination for:

• Culture travelers
• Foodies
• Architecture lovers
• Families
• Solo travelers
• Anyone interested in Mayan history

Merida is the 13th largest city in Mexico, and it has a solid infrastructure, including great hospitals and an airport.

To get to Merida, you can fly into Merida International Airport (MID). 

For now, there aren’t too many direct flights to Merida from other countries. That’s why many visitors choose to fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN), then make the trip from Cancun to Merida over-land.

Merida is the capital of Yucatan state, one of the three states that make up the Yucatan Peninsula. 

It is considered the Culture Capital of the Yucatan. If you want to visit Mayan Ruins like Chichen Itza and Uxmal, shop for handmade artisan goods, tour historic hacienda, and taste the amazing regional food, Merida is the place.

You’ll find Merida located about 40 minutes from the closest beach, Puerto Progreso. 

There are also other beaches a bit further out, as well as cenotes to swim in throughout the Yucatan. (Cenotes are jungle pools, or sinkholes.) 

Choose from hundreds of cenotes about one hour from Merida, like Cenote Xoch and Cenote Santa Rosa.

Though known as the country’s safest city, that’s not to say “bad” things don’t happen in Merida.

They do. 

Even in a safe place like Merida, travelers still need to make personal safety a top priority in order to ensure safety.

You’ll want to remain aware of yourself, your surroundings and your belongings at all times, as crimes of opportunity can happen anywhere in the world. 

Still, you can also just relax and enjoy the city, as it’s a statistically safe place.

3. Guanajuato City, Mexico – One of the Most Colorful Cities in Mexico

Guanajuato City is a city in Mexico located in the state of Guanajuato. This colorful yet hilly city is located in Central Mexico about 390 km north of Mexico City. 

In the 1500’s silver was discovered in Guanajuato City and it has been a thriving city ever since.

The city of Guanajuato is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with so much to offer, sites to see, and great food to explore. 

Guanajuato City is a university city with a university of over 30,000 students. Because of this, Guanajuato City has a young population with a lively night life. 

Due to the university, tourist attractions, and lovely nature surrounding the city, people here are very friendly to tourists and welcome them.

This helps make Guanajuato City one of the most welcoming, visitor-friendly cities in central Mexico.

As a tourist, you can freely walk around Guanajuato City both during the day and at night. Explore the underground streets, walk the narrow alley ways, sample food at Mercado Hidalgo. 

This is a very walkable city, although taxis are a cheap and reliable option. 

You can take a taxi to Mina La Valenciana. While here there is the Temple of San Cayetano and Museum of Purgatory that are worth visiting.

Once back in the city center, visitors can’t miss the Basilica of our Lady and taking a walk to the top of the hill where the El Pipila monument is. 

From here, you get an amazing view of the city of Guanajuato. 

The walk to the monument is safe and beautiful, but it is recommended to bring water and take your time as it can get hot and shade can be limited.

For those that like morbid attractions, there is a mummy museum at the edge of town that is rather creepy but well worth visiting. 

In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s a local graveyard was dug up because of over crowding and it was discovered that the bodies were so well preserved. 

Locals at the time decided to put some of the mummies on display and it has been a popular attraction since.

There is a wonderful community of expats in La Ventana, and even as a solo traveler it is very easy to connect with other travelers and locals.

The main safety concern to be aware of in La Ventana is driving. 

Having your own rental car is the best way to get around, but many of the roads are unpaved. With slow, cautious driving you won’t have any problems. 

But its best to avoid driving at night when it can be difficult to see potholes, and any cows who commonly wander out onto the road!

All in all, La Ventana, and Baja California Sur, is a very safe part of Mexico to visit, with some incredible landscapes, wildlife and culture to discover.

7. El Cuyo Yucatan

El Cuyo is a gorgeous little beach town in the Northeastern part of the Yucatan state. 

It is a three-hour drive from Cancun and, at least for the time being, it remains largely off the beaten path.

You can comfortably enjoy the town and the beach alone, even as a solo or solo female traveler. There is a real respectful, small-community vibe in El Cuyo that is rare to find anywhere in the world today.

If you prefer to be a little more active, you can try your hand at kitesurfing. El Cuyo is one of the best kitesurfing destinations in Southern Mexico.

8. Explore the Rocky Tide Pools in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point)

Rocky Point is a beach-front community located only an hour from the US border and a four-hour drive from Phoenix, AZ. It’s in Sonora inside the Baja Peninsula on the mainland of Mexico.

9. Safe Places to Visit in Mexico – Palenque

Palenque, in northern Chiapas (Mexico’s southernmost state), is an incredible place to visit.

The town itself – while very safe – is fairly unremarkable. But a few kilometers out from the center of town is one of the most spectacular ruined cities on earth.

Originally built over 2,000 years ago, Palenque was an important and powerful Mayan city.  

At its height, Palenque’s rulers controlled large swathes of Central America. After its decline, the city was lost, swallowed by the jungle.

Today, the ancient ruins are extremely atmospheric.  Surrounded by thick forest, and perched on top of a hill, the whole place feels very special. Mystical, even.

You should allow a full day to explore the Palenque ruins. The site is huge, and there’s so much to see.  

Be sure to bring lots of water, sunscreen and a hat with you. Palenque is hot and humid year round, and there’s not much shade.

Another fantastic place to visit near Palenque is the Roberto Barrios waterfalls. These are about an hour’s drive away from Palenque, through some spectacular scenery.

The waterfalls themselves are beautiful, and well worth the journey.

There are many turquoise pools where you can swim and cool off from the afternoon heat.

Some of the waterfalls are shaped in a way that allows you to slide down them. If in doubt, ask a local which areas are safe to do this.

To get to Roberto Barrios, you can take a colectivo (shared minibus taxi), or go as part of a guided tour.  If you have your own car, be sure to stop off along the way to enjoy the amazing views.

Palenque and its surrounding area is overall a very safe place to visit. That’s why it’s included in this list of the safest places to visit in Mexico.

This area generally does not suffer from the drug gang-related violence that plagues some other parts of Mexico, and crime against foreigners is pretty rare here.

That said, it always pays to take sensible precautions.

Keep an eye on your belongings at all times, lock valuables in the safe at your accommodation, don’t carry lots of money or expensive-looking items around with you, and avoid walking around by yourself after dark.

10. Cozumel

You can walk along the Aldora Pier and explore beautiful monuments such as Monumento Al Mestizaje, Coral Reefs Monument, or La Tortuga.

Downtown Cozumel is a must-see attraction on the island.

11. Make Valladolid your Perfect Base to Discover Chichen Itza and More

Valladolid, located in the state of Yucatán, is a great place to include in your Mexico itinerary. 

Here, you can enjoy local Yucatán food, visit cenotes (natural deep-water wells) in the area, and it is also one of the safest cities in Mexico.

The third-largest city of Yucatán, with a population of around 48,000 inhabitants, is the perfect base to spend a couple of days while you explore places around the area. 

That’s because of its central location on the Yucatán Peninsula. Valladolid is about a 2-hour drive from Mérida or a 1.5-hour drive from Tulum.

The city is quite small, and pretty much everything is walkable. 

Most accommodations are located close to the main square. Also, most attractions, restaurants and bars are located within the same area. 

Therefore, you never have to worry about having to grab a taxi or Uber when getting back home. 

After the sun sets, there are still plenty of people out and about on the streets, tourists and locals alike.

While you are exploring Valladolid, make sure to check out its beautiful main square with its historic church and all the colorful houses in the streets. 

You’ll discover there are a lot of cenotes around Valladolid, but you can even find a restaurant, like Zaci, that has its own cenote in the back!

While you can see most of Valladolid within a few hours, there are plenty of things to do around Valladolid, as well. 

One of them is driving 1.5 hours up North to the beautiful little town of Rio Lagartos for the day. Then, you can spend the day on a boat tour around a lagoon spotting flamingos.

Another great thing about Valladolid is that it is only about a 45-minute drive away from the world-famous Chichen Itza archaeological site (skip-the-line tickets on GetYourGuide). 

If you want to beat the crowds and arrive at the site as early as possible, it is great to start your trip from Valladolid. This is especially true when you have a rental car because you can be there right when it opens.

12. Cancun, Quintana Roo, Benito Juárez

Cancun sits at one of the country’s easternmost points in southeast Mexico. 

It sits on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and is best known for its historic Mayan ruins, stunning nature, water sports, and nightlife.

13. Unplug in the Mountain Village of San Jose del Pacifico

Dedicated to a natural way of life, San Jose del Pacifico has made a name for itself among backpackers and those seeking a unique kind of retreat. 

It’s one of the best places in Mexico to have a spiritual and eco-focused experience.

The village sits high above the clouds, and watching the fog roll through the pines at sunset is the main event. Cabins with mountain views, local organic honey, and simple wood-fired cooking round out the experience.

Many visitors also come for a Temazcal ceremony.

A Temazcal ceremony is like an ancient indigenous sauna that originates in Mexico going back hundreds of years.

Usually, tourists start in Oaxaca, take a shuttle to San Jose del Pacifico, and then take another shuttle to Puerto Escondido. 

This is the perfect Mexican 1-week trip that has you visiting a historical “Pueblo Magico,” the mountains, and the beach.

San Jose del Pacifico is a tiny village where everyone truly knows everyone, and travelers consistently describe feeling at ease here. It is considered one of the quieter, lower-risk stops in Oaxaca state.

14. Visit the Cobbled Streets of Coyoacán in Mexico City

Coyoacán is a former village and now one of the 16 boroughs in Mexico City located in the South. 

It is mostly known for its art galleries, cobbled streets and its artisan markets. 

There is a lot of history in Coyoacán. The narrow streets have been preserved and date back to the 16th century, It also has some stunning and original layouts and plazas.

Coyoacán is a fairly safe place to visit, but, as with visiting any city, you should be careful about certain things such as pickpocketing and just be aware of your surroundings. 

This being said, the area is certainly not considered dangerous and you can walk around during both the day and the night without experiencing any issues.

It’s a good pick among the safest places to visit in Mexico.

In general, it doesn’t take long to explore the area with 1-2 hours being the suggested recommendation. 

However, if you wanted to spend a bit more time there and see some other attractions then you may want to spend slightly longer there or even up to a day.

There are some quite good museums there which are great if you like history.

These include the Frida Kahlo Museum where the main part is just walking through her house and seeing how she lived, it also features some old paintings of hers within the house however, this isn’t the main attraction. 

To visit this you need to book an advanced ticket via the website. 

Another museum you can see is the Leon Trotsky Museum which is another house-type museum featuring the house he lived in until he sadly lost his life in this house at the hands of a Stalin supporter. 

His Study still remains exactly how it was on the day he was attacked and even his books are in the same place.

Some other interesting things to do there include: Mercado de Coyoacán (Coyoacán market), Plaza Jardín Hidalgo, and Jardin Centenario.

If you do choose to visit, also make sure you try some churros and have a paleta (a Mexican frozen dessert made from natural fruits) as they are both delicious!

15. Visit the Beautiful Bohemian Island of Holbox

If you are looking for a relaxed and safe place to visit in Mexico, Isla Holbox should definitely be on your list.

Isla Holbox is a beautiful island on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico, northwest of Cancun. 

It’s slightly harder to visit this island compared to the popular Isla Mujeres, which is why you will still find the slow-paced and laidback lifestyle on Isla Holbox, whereas Isla Mujeres has been slowly losing this charm.

Some of the best things to do on Isla Holbox are to relax, go to the beach, and watch the sunsets (and if you can get out of bed early, the sunrises). 

If you are done doing as little as possible, you might be happy to know that there are also plenty of active things to do on the island as well.

For example, a tour along all the cool murals on the island, walking along the coastline of the island, or boat tours to neighboring uninhabited islands.

Now, back to the question of why Isla Holbox is generally considered a safe place to visit.

First, it’s an island in the Yucatan Peninsula with a population of only 1,198 inhabitants. 

Not quite a location that attracts many drug gangs. This is why Isla Holbox has been relatively free of drug violence.

Second, the entire population relies heavily on tourists for their income, which is why tourists are hardly ever the target of crimes. 

Sure pickpocketing and scams happen as they do everywhere, but it definitely doesn’t happen on a regular basis.

Third, it’s also the safest place in Mexico when it comes to traffic accidents. 

Because the only accidents that can happen on the island are those with bikes or golf carts, as there are no cars on the island.

Obviously, this doesn’t mean you can forget about all your standard safety precautions. 

You should still not carry around crazy amounts of money, and avoid isolated places alone at night. But if you use your common sense, Isla Holbox will give you an amazing (and safe) time!

16. Mexico City

Mexico City, also known as CDMX (Ciudad de México), DF (Distrito Federal) and México, is one of the most favored cities in the world.

It’s lively, full of amazing museums, restaurants, parks and monuments and yes, it’s as safe as any enormous city around the world. 

When you visit, you’ll want to take as much (or as little) precaution as you would anywhere else:

• Don’t walk solo on the street late at night.
• Be aware of your belongings at all times, especially in crowds.
• Do remember that Mexico City does have the odd earthquake.

The city is one of the biggest cities in the world, so there’s no way any visitor is going to see more than a corner or two in the average visit.

So, be sure to make your time count: figure out what you want to do, find your area, and plan, plan, plan. 

You might like to stay in places such as Coyoacán, Polanco, Roma Norte, or Reforma because it’s easy to fill a few days with activities that can be reached on foot. 

Be sure to visit the Castillo de Chapultepec, located in Bosque de Chapultepec, one of the world’s largest parks.

Then stroll along Reforma as far as Alameda Central (take a cab if you get tired) where you’ll find wonderful art galleries. They including the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Museo Mural Diego Rivera, the Museum of Tolerance, and numerous others. 

From here the famous Zocalo is an exhilarating walk away too. 

On the Zocalo there’s enough to do and see that you might even need a whole day to take in the cathedral, Museo del Templo Mayor, the Palacio Nacional, and more. 

If you can, find time to visit the Monumento a la Revolución. 

And if you’re in town for a little longer, a trip to the south to learn about the origins of Mexico City while floating on the canals of Xochimilco is an absolute winner of a day.

The city is home to world class restaurants, great street tacos and everything in between. 

You’re never going to be hungry in Mexico City and because no one drinks or uses tap water, there are few worries when it comes to food safety. 

Eat where others are eating and you won’t go wrong.

17. The Great Pyramid of Cholula

Located in the state of Puebla, the pre-hispanic town of Cholula is a 1.5 hours drive away from Mexico City. 

Cholula gets lots of domestic and international visitors due to its proximity to Mexico City. 

It is great for a day tour or couple of days visit. 

Cholula is known for the churches, the Great Pyramid and restaurants, with amazing views of surrounding volcanoes.

The Zona Arqueológica de Cholula or the Great Pyramid along with the church Santuario de la Virgen de los Remedios is the most important landmark of the town.

The Great Pyramid, locally called Tlachihualtepetl, is the largest pyramid in the world in terms of volume, wider than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. 

The construction period of the pyramid spanned over 1000 years, being completed in the 9th century. It was built as a temple dedicated to Aztec god Quetzalcoatl. 

The pyramid looks just few meters high as most of its elaborate tunnels lie under the ground. 

You can take a walk along the pyramid to get a rough idea of the width or explore some parts of the underground tunnels.

However, the sixteenth century church, Santuario de la Virgen de los Remedios, built above the pyramid draws more attention due to its gold-colored striking architecture. 

The views from the church is breathtaking as you will see the valley and 2 active volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl, at a distance.

Although Chiapas has a complicated history, you can take in the beauty of the Spanish and Mayan cultures colliding in the bustling town of San Cristóbal de las Casas.

When it comes to Mexican culture, Oaxaca City is considered the pinnacle, but San Cristóbal de las Casas has it in spades. 

The colorful colonial buildings offer a delightful backdrop to a welcoming and charming destination. 

The historic heart of the town is built on a grid system of streets and avenues making it perfect to explore on foot. 

For the best experience, base yourself near the pedestrian promenade, Real de Guadalupe. From here everything is walkable with the main square, museums, markets, shops, and restaurants just steps away.

You may want to taste your way through the locally owned cafes and chocolaterias that dot the streets, offering coffee and chocolate grown in the mountains nearby. 

You don’t want to miss the restaurant scene in San Cristóbal, producing incredible dishes with local ingredients at great prices.

Located about an hour north of the glitzy resort city of Puerto Vallarta, the streets are lined with brightly painted buildings and bustling shops and restaurants, but this tiny town was put on the map for one thing- its myriad of awesome surf breaks! 

Having turned into a sort of mecca for surfers and nomads, Sayulita has a friendly, laid back vibe that makes you want to plop down on the beach, margarita in hand.

Because of Sayulita’s status as a pueblo magico, the city’s colorful blocks are well-kept and fairly clean and, given the dainty size of the city, it’s incredibly manageable to navigate. 

In fact, most visitors simply get around on foot or by golf cart!

It’s worth noting that Sayulita’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, resulting in marked increase of buskers selling trinkets to visitors. These vendors can be deterred by a polite and simple “no, gracias” and will do you no harm.

Additionally, the town has become something of a party hub at night, which, like any city, increases the chance of petty crime. 

As such, it would be advisable to refrain from walking around by yourself at night if you’re intoxicated or unsure of where you’re heading.

There’s so many things to do in Sayulita beyond partying, though – like, for example, checking out those waves! 

Sayulita is a great option for experts and beginners alike. In fact, there are quite a few affordable surf schools in the area, like Patricia’s Surf School, if you’re a newbie. 

Alternatively, there’s other water sports, like stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking, or simply just relaxing on any of the number of white sand beaches in the region.

Loreto is a relatively small and utterly relaxed coastal town on the Sea of Cortez. 

It is situated on a plain below the Sierra Giganta Mountain range. You can arrive by plane, by cruise ship or private boat or travel down by vehicle (approximately a 12-hour drive) from the United States border.

Once in Loreto, start with a wander along the shoreline malecon. 

Check out the bird life on the docks.

There are no cars, no cell service worth mentioning, and no crowds. Instead, you’ll find a dirt road, a lighthouse on a hill, and a far shore where the Atlantic crashes against granite cliffs. For generations, artists and photographers have been making the trip to this idyllic island.

If you’re planning a Monhegan Island day trip, here’s how to make the most of a day on the island.

Why Monhegan Island Is Worth the Trip

Monhegan has been drawing artists to its shores for more than 150 years.

Edward Hopper painted here. Rockwell Kent built a cottage on the island. Three generations of Wyeths found inspiration here. Today, artists still arrive with sketchbooks, easels, and cameras in hand.

I visited on a late September day trip from Boothbay Harbor with someone who had long wanted to visit Monhegan, an island legendary among artists.

When the island comes into view, low and green against the open Atlantic, you’ll start to understand the appeal.

But you don’t need to be an artist to fall for this place.

Monhegan is small. You’ll find a handful of places to eat, a lighthouse, miles of hiking trails with incredible overlooks, and a year-round population small enough that everyone probably knows everyone else.

That’s about it.

And that’s the whole point.

Whether you’re visiting for the day or staying overnight, your trip starts on the mainland. Boothbay Harbor and nearby Southport make convenient bases for exploring Monhegan, with easy access to the ferry dock. Here’s a look at what’s available in the area.

Getting to Monhegan Island

The Balmy Days II typically departs from Pier 8 in Boothbay Harbor at 9:30 every morning from mid-June through late September. It’s a passenger-only ferry, smaller than what you might picture when you hear the word ferry.

This is a working boat, not a car-carrying vessel with a snack bar and an upper deck. You’ll feel every swell on the open water.

As the mainland slips away, it’s a chance to slow down, look out at the water, and leave the rest of the world behind for a while.

You’ll arrive on Monhegan around 11:00 and the return trip leaves at 4:15. That gives you just over three and a half hours on the island. It sounds tight, but it’s enough to see the village, hike to the cliffs, and grab something to eat before heading back.

I sailed from Boothbay, but it isn’t the only way over. Three mainland ports run boats to the island, and the best one depends on where you’re driving from.

The Balmy Days II from Boothbay Harbor is the longest crossing at about 90 minutes. New Harbor, served by the Hardy Boat, and Port Clyde, served by the Monhegan Boat Line (the only year-round service), are both closer to an hour. If you get seasick, the shorter Port Clyde or New Harbor runs are worth a look.

You’ll want to sort out parking before you go, too. The lots vary by port, so check ahead. Whichever one you choose, give yourself enough time to park and pick up your tickets before boarding.

What to Pack and Know Before You Go

Before you board the ferry, a little preparation will make your day on Monhegan much more enjoyable.

• Dress in Layers. It can be 80 degrees on the mainland and noticeably cooler out on the water, and the far shore is exposed with almost no shade. Bring a sweatshirt or a windbreaker.
• Sturdy shoes. The village roads are easy gravel, but the woodland trails are rooty and uneven, and the coastal rocks get slippery. Hiking shoes beat sandals.
• Cash in small bills. Some spots are cash-only, and when the island’s internet drops, card payments can become unreliable. There are ATMs on the island, but I wouldn’t rely on them.
• Water and snacks. Food options are limited and pricey, and the hiking is more demanding than it looks. Bring water and snacks from the mainland.
• Bug protection. The wooded trails can be buggy, especially in summer, so consider bringing bug spray and a light long-sleeved shirt.
• Sun protection. Once you leave the village, there is very little shade. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will make the day much more comfortable.
• Camera gear. Whether you’re shooting with a DSLR or your phone, bring a backup battery or power bank and an extra SD card. Between the ferry ride, hiking trails, harbor views, and dramatic coastline, you’ll take more photos than you expect.
• A bag for your trash. Monhegan is pack-in, pack-out, so plan to carry off everything you bring.

One last tip: plan around the island’s limited infrastructure. There are few places to charge your phone, public restrooms are limited, and cell service becomes patchy once you leave the harbor. So, download your map and any information you’ll need before you board.

First Impressions

You know you’re somewhere different the moment you step off the boat.

Lobster traps are stacked in walls along the dock.

The Monhegan Store sits just up from the wharf, selling provisions, groceries, and wine.

Next to it, The Barnacle has coffee, pastries, and sandwiches.

A few benches face the harbor, and across the water, the small hump of Manana Island rises close enough that you could almost swim to it. Painters have been capturing that view for over a century. Manana was once home to a sheep-farming hermit who lived there for 45 years. His driftwood shack later inspired sculptor Louise Nevelson.

A dirt road leads up from the dock into the village.

The island rises toward its center, so the walk is an incline, but nothing that will wind you.

Within a few steps, the noise of the boat engine fades and you’re surrounded by a quiet that takes a moment to register. It’s just wind, birds, and your own footsteps on packed earth.

The Village

The village is small enough to cover on foot in twenty minutes, but you won’t want to rush it.

The homes are beautiful old New England structures, not boastful but deeply charming, with white fences and weathered shingles.

Apple trees and wildflowers grow thick along the road.

At one house, an artist’s easel was set up on the lawn overlooking a small bay, boats resting at their moorings. Nobody was painting when I passed. The easel just stood there, waiting, like it had all the time in the world.

Lupine Gallery is worth a stop. Established in 1985, it occupies two floors on the main village road and represents more than fifty contemporary artists.

The work is strong, and the person staffing the gallery when I visited was warm and approachable, the way Mainers tend to be. Not performative, not stiff. Just present and happy to talk about the art.

Beyond the gallery, the village has a church, a one-room schoolhouse, a post office, and not much else in the way of infrastructure.

As I passed the school, I wondered what it would be like to grow up here, with a year-round population smaller than most apartment buildings. Then again, this is the island that inspired three generations of Wyeths, so maybe growing up a little differently is part of the point.

Either way, it’s a life focused on craft, played out in one of the most beautiful settings on the coast.

Monhegan Museum of Art & History

Follow the road uphill and you’ll reach Monhegan Island Light, first lit in 1824. The lighthouse sits at the island’s highest point, and the views from the surrounding grounds sweep across the village, the harbor, and the open ocean beyond.

The Monhegan Museum of Art and History occupies buildings on the lighthouse grounds, including the former keeper’s house and a gallery featuring artists who painted on the island. It explores both Monhegan’s maritime history and its long artistic legacy.

When I visited in late September, the museum was closed for the season, but the grounds were open and worth the walk on their own.

Here, you’ll find a bronze fog bell that once warned ships approaching Manana Island, along with plaques recognizing the Wabanaki people and marking the site of Captain John Smith’s 1614 fishing colony.

A bench facing the water makes this a great place to sit down for a minute to reflect and take in the breathtaking views.

The Trails and the Far Shore

This is the reason to come. The real one.

A network of woodland paths crosses the island, winding through evergreen forest along soft, root-laced trails. The walk is shaded, quiet, and surprisingly peaceful.

Then the trees open up, and suddenly you’re standing on the edge of the Atlantic.

Waves crash against massive granite ledges below in explosions of white foam, contrasting the turquoise and deep blue water.

There’s no railing, no signage, no boardwalk. It’s just you and the ocean and a horizon line that seems impossibly far away.

Depending on the day, you might spot seals, a distant sailboat, or even the spout of a whale offshore.

A few other visitors sat scattered across the rocks when I arrived. Some were taking photographs. Others simply stared out at the water. It’s a truly hypnotic scene with the roar of the waves and the incredible view.

Nobody seemed in a hurry to leave, and there wasn’t much to say.

I wasn’t in a hurry either.

The trails loop back through the woods to the village side of the island, so you don’t need to retrace your steps. The whole circuit takes about an hour and a half at a leisurely pace, but you’ll want to allow extra time for the far shore.

You’ll want it.

The Art Colony Legacy

Monhegan’s identity as an art colony runs deeper than a marketing label. Artists have been coming here since the mid-1800s, drawn by the island’s dramatic coastline, changing weather, and distinctive light.

The list of artists associated with Monhegan is remarkable for such a small island.

Rockwell Kent built a cottage on the island’s southern tip in 1905.

George Bellows painted here.

Edward Hopper did too.

Even Winslow Homer has a place in Monhegan lore, though historians have never been able to prove he actually painted on the island.

The strongest artistic connection may be the Wyeth family. N.C. Wyeth visited in the early twentieth century. Andrew Wyeth followed.

Jamie Wyeth spent decades painting the island and its people, producing some of Monhegan’s most recognizable images, including Kent House and the 1972 watercolor The Red House.

But he also painted what he calls the less-celebrated aspects of island life: the gulls, the fog, the working boats, the quiet corners that most visitors walk past without noticing.

What struck me most wasn’t the history itself. It was how present it still feels.

Earlier in the day, I passed an easel set up on a lawn overlooking the harbor. Galleries line the village road. Artists still arrive carrying sketchbooks, paint boxes, and cameras, hoping to capture something of the island for themselves.

Spend a day on Monhegan and it’s easy to understand why they keep coming back.

Eating on Monhegan

After a few hours on the trails and the lingering afterglow of the far shore, a pastry and an iced coffee by the harbor felt like exactly the right way to end the day.

Food options on Monhegan are more spread out than plentiful, so it helps to think about them by location.

Expect island prices. Supplies arrive by boat, after all. But few places can match the view while you enjoy a bite.

Near the ferry dock, The Barnacle serves coffee, espresso drinks, baked goods, sandwiches, and chowder. It’s an easy stop before heading out on the trails or while waiting for the return ferry. We stopped for a pastry and an iced coffee here before boarding, and it was the perfect transition back to the mainland.

If you’re exploring farther afield, Monhegan Coffee Roasters operates out of The Mooring Chain on the south end of the island, serving coffee, bagels, and pastries. Monhegan Brewing Company is also located away from the harbor and worth considering if you have extra time.

For a full meal, The Fish House at Fish Beach is known for fresh seafood and fish tacos. The Novelty, tucked behind Monhegan House, serves pizza, ice cream, beer, wine, and picnic-friendly fare.

Both Island Inn and Monhegan House also welcome non-guests for meals in their dining rooms. Check availability or make a reservation in advance during peak season.

On a day trip, every hour counts. If food is part of your plan, it’s worth deciding where you’d like to eat before setting out across the island.

Should You Stay Overnight?

I visited Monhegan as a day trip, and the 3.5 hours I spent on the island were enough for a strong first taste. But just about everyone who stays overnight says the island changes when the day boats depart and the trails and harbor grow quiet.

If you’ve got the time, an overnight stay lets you experience a side of Monhegan that day-trippers miss.

Lodging is limited and books up early, so you’ll want to reserve well ahead.

• The Island Inn has overlooked the harbor since 1907, with accommodations ranging from ocean-view rooms to more budget-friendly options with shared baths.
• The Monhegan House, an 1870s inn in the center of the village, offers guest rooms and a restaurant of its own.
• Shining Sails rounds things out with bed-and-breakfast rooms, cottages, and efficiencies for travelers who want a little more space.
• A handful of private cottage rentals are available on Airbnb as well, though availability varies from season to season.

What I’d Do Differently

I loved the day, but I’d change a few things on a second visit:

• Get off the main loop. I walked the far-shore circuit, which is the highlight, but the island has 17 miles of trails and I only saw a slice of them. Next time I’d spend more time exploring the quieter corners of the island.
• Visit when the museum is open. The Monhegan Museum was closed for the season when I visited in late September. I’d return earlier in the year and set aside time to explore both the exhibits and the galleries.
• Slow down in the village. I spent most of my time on the trails, but Monhegan rewards wandering. Next time I’d linger longer in the galleries, browse the shops, and spend more time simply watching harbor life unfold.
• Stay overnight. The day-trip clock moves faster than you’d think. By the time I felt like I was settling into the rhythm of the island, it was time to head back to the ferry. One night would let me experience Monhegan after the day visitors leave and catch the light at both ends of the day.

The Return to the Mainland

The ride back to Boothbay feels different than the ride out.

The island gets smaller behind you as the mainland slowly comes back into view. Most people sit quietly, looking out at the water or scrolling through the photos they took during the day.

My traveling companion had wanted to visit for years. He came looking for the island that inspired generations of artists, experiencing it through an artist’s lens. I saw it through my camera lens. By the end of the day, we both understood the same thing.

Monhegan is not a checklist destination. It’s a place to meander, linger, and take things in.

Final Thoughts on Monhegan Island, Maine

Monhegan isn’t polished or packaged. It’s a small island with a lighthouse, a dirt road, a handful of galleries, and a coastline worth the trip on its own.

Add the trails, the artistic legacy, the village, and the feeling that you’ve stepped into a different rhythm of life, and it’s easy to understand the island’s appeal.

If you can get to Boothbay Harbor, you can get to Monhegan. Give it a day. If you have the time, give it two.

What a Full-Day Tuscany Tour from Florence Includes

Most Tuscany day tours from Florence follow the same general route: a loop through the Chianti hills south of the city, stopping at three or four historic towns and finishing with a wine tasting at a family-run estate.

The tour company I chose advertises a 10.5 hour day. In actuality, my day ran closer to 12 hours door-to-door, with the bus pulling back into Florence around 8:45 PM. Remember, you’re on Italy-time, so don’t expect an overly strict schedule.

The four stops on the tour unfolded in this order:

Expect your Tuscany tour from Florence to start at around 65 euros (about $75 USD), depending on the operator and season. That typically includes the bus, a tour guide, wireless headsets for the guided portion in Siena, and the wine tasting with food pairings at the end.

Your tour operator may run the stops in a different order depending on the day. My tour started with San Gimignano in the morning and ended with the wine tasting, but the same route sometimes runs Monteriggioni first. The stops are the same either way.

Most tours depart from near Santa Maria Novella train station, so confirm your exact meeting point when you book.

The Bus: What to Know Before You Board

Before you board the bus to begin your tour, you should know a few things.

Many tours offer a full-size coach, air conditioned, with WiFi and charging ports at the seats.

That said, some of the charging ports on my bus were broken, so don’t count on them. You’ll want to bring a portable battery for your phone or camera, because you don’t want to miss the incredible photo opportunities ahead.

You can’t eat or drink on the bus. If you like to sip coffee or enjoy snacks during a drive, this might be an adjustment.

The upside is that the coach is clean and comfortable.

You can, however, bring water, and you should. You’ll be doing a lot of walking and depending on the season, it will be hot.

The best part of being on the bus is the drive itself.

The route takes you through the Chianti hills, past vineyards, olive groves, and those iconic rows of cypress trees.

If you’re sitting on the right side heading south from Florence, you’ll get the best views.

The WiFi actually works for checking maps to follow your journey (and for checking messages, if you must). In general, you can expect the following travel time.

Bus ride durations between stops:

• Florence to San Gimignano: ~50 minutes
• San Gimignano to Monteriggioni: ~10 minutes
• Monteriggioni to Siena: ~45 minutes
• Siena to Torciano: ~50 minutes
• Torciano back to Florence: ~1.5 hours

Total time on the bus across the full day is roughly three hours. That sounds like a lot, but the scenery makes most of it feel like part of the experience rather than dead time.

Stop 1: San Gimignano

San Gimignano is where the day begins in earnest.

The bus parks below the walls and you walk up through Porta San Giovanni, the main gate, into a hilltop town famous for its 14 medieval towers.

The towers were built by rival families trying to outdo each other in height during the 13th century. From a distance, the skyline looks like a miniature Manhattan made of stone.

It’s an excellent display of a wealthy walled hill town.

You’ll get about an hour and fifteen minutes here, so make the most of it.

The main gathering point is Piazza della Cisterna, a triangular medieval piazza ringed by towers and cafes with a 13th-century stone well at its center.

From there, it’s a short walk to Piazza del Duomo, the second main square, where you’ll find the Collegiata di San Gimignano.

The church has a plain Romanesque facade that doesn’t prepare you for what’s inside: the walls are covered in frescoes dating to the 14th century.

Even a quick look through the doorway is worth the walk.

If you thought the views from the bus were good, the panorama from the perimeter of San Gimignano is on another level.

You’ll see rolling Chianti hills, cypress-lined ridges, and olive groves stretching to the horizon. It’s the quintessential Tuscany view, and in the morning light with fewer crowds, you can walk the full perimeter at your own pace.

You’ll also have time to browse the artisan shops (leather goods, ceramics, wild boar salami) and get gelato. The gelato shops here are famous, and the competition between them is fierce.

Stop 2: Monteriggioni

Monteriggioni is about ten minutes down the road from San Gimignano. This is a brief stop, about 30 minutes, but it’s worthwhile.

Unlike San Gimignano, Monteriggioni was built as a military fortress. A ring of crenellated walls (battlement squares) with 14 round towers surrounds the town. The center includes a single piazza so small you can walk across it in two minutes.

The whole thing sits on a hilltop, visible for miles in every direction. That’s exactly what its builders intended, since Monteriggioni was constructed to help defend Siena from Florence.

When Dante wrote the Inferno, he compared the giants standing in the pit of Hell to Monteriggioni’s towers as seen from a distance (Canto XXXI).

As the fortress comes into view from the bus, you’ll understand exactly what he meant.

You’ll have time to walk along the perimeter of the walls (for a small fee) as the guards once did, take in the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and grab a coffee at one of the restaurants on the piazza.

It isn’t enough time to linger, but the town is genuinely that small. Most people are done exploring before the guide calls everyone back to the bus. Still, it gives you an idea what life in a small Medieval community might be like.

Stop 3: Siena

Siena is the main event for most Tuscany day tours, and you’ll get about three and a half hours here. That’s significantly more time than the other stops, and for good reason. There’s a lot to see.

The bus drops you near Piazza Salimbeni, a quiet square anchored by the headquarters of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the oldest operating bank in the world (founded 1472).

It’s an interesting footnote most tours skip. The building’s Gothic facade has been the face of Sienese banking for over five centuries. And you’ll see the Medici crest prominently displayed.

The Siena visit starts with a guided walking tour.

Your guide leads the group through the historic center while you listen through wireless headsets, which means you can spread out and find your own angle on things without huddling around the guide.

It’s one of the better tour logistics I’ve encountered but I will say, the headsets are a bit clunky and some are staticky, so check it when the tour begins. You might need to request another set.

The guided portion covers Piazza del Campo (the fan-shaped piazza where the famous Palio horse race happens twice each summer), the Fonte Gaia fountain, and the exterior of the Palazzo Pubblico with its soaring Torre del Mangia.

After the guided section, you get free time to explore on your own.

Use that free time for the Duomo. The Siena Cathedral is extraordinary.

The black and white striped marble exterior is dramatic. I wasn’t prepared for the interior.

There, you’ll find inlaid marble floors depicting intricate biblical scenes and a carved pulpit by Nicola Pisano. A rose window fills the nave with colored light. Overhead, a coffered dome painted deep blue and covered in gold stars draws your eye upward.

Entry costs around €7–10 ($8–12 USD), depending on the season, and is worth every cent.

Stop 4: Wine Tasting at Tenuta Torciano

The last stop of the day is the one everyone on the bus has been waiting for. After a drive through the Chianti countryside (about 50 minutes from Siena), the bus pulls into Tenuta Torciano. This family-run winery near San Gimignano has been producing wine for 15 generations.

You’ll sit down first at a long communal table with the rest of your tour group, and something shifts.

The formal tour feeling fades. Tasting notes cards are set at each place. Wine glasses are lined up. Plates of Tuscan antipasti appear: salami, pecorino, bruschetta with fresh olive oil, and bread that’s clearly not from a supermarket.

The host walks you through each wine, and the table starts talking.

What surprised me was the atmosphere. Everyone at the table started talking. The people you’ve been sharing the day with started to feel familiar.

People compared notes, laughed about their favorite stops, swapped travel recommendations.

A couple from Australia sat across from me and we ended up trading restaurant tips for Florence.

It felt less like a tour activity and more like a dinner party with interesting strangers.

After the tasting, the tour continues into the winery’s barrel room.

Big oak barrels line the walls from floor to ceiling in a dimly lit room that smells like aged wood and tannins. The guide explains the aging process and points out barrels that have been there for decades.

Torciano also sells wine and olive oil directly, and they ship internationally. If you find something you love, by all means, send a case or two home. It will extend your experience and bring you back to Torciano with every glass.

The Chianti Countryside Between Stops

The drive between stops when you plan a Tuscany tour from Florence deserves its own mention.

This isn’t all highway driving.

The bus follows winding two-lane roads through the Chianti hills. Along the way, you’ll pass vineyards lined up in neat winter rows and stone farmhouses topped with red tile roofs. Long driveways flanked by cypress trees disappear over the ridgelines.

Several times, the views from the bus were so striking that the whole coach went silent. You could hear cameras clicking and see phones held to the windows.

The countryside itself is a stop on the tour, even if the bus doesn’t pull over. You may not get the clearest photo while in motion on the bus, but even a blurry shot of the Italian countryside preserves the scene beautifully.

Is a Tuscany Day Tour Worth It?

Here’s the honest answer about whether a Tuscany tour from Florence is worth it: it depends on what you want from Tuscany.

If you’re based in Florence for a few days and you want to see the countryside without renting a car or planning logistics, a guided day tour is one of the best values in Italian travel.

There’s a tradeoff when you see everything that you experience nothing.

For roughly 65 to 100 euros ($75 to $115 USD), you get transportation, a knowledgeable guide, multiple medieval towns, and a proper wine tasting with food.

You don’t have to worry about parking, navigating unfamiliar roads, finding your way through historic town centers with restricted traffic zones, or driving after drinking wine.

The tradeoff is time.

Thirty minutes in Monteriggioni is a taste, not a visit. Even Siena, with three and a half hours, leaves you wanting more.

And you won’t discover your own hidden courtyard or stumble onto a local’s recommendation, because the schedule keeps you moving.

But if you want the overview, the scenery, and the wine, this day delivers. It’s a great way to see the Tuscan countryside and several hill towns in a single day.

How to Do This Route on Your Own

If you prefer to drive yourself, this same route works well as a one-day road trip from Florence.

My recommended order is the same as the tour: San Gimignano first (arrive by 9:30 AM for morning light and smaller crowds), Monteriggioni as a quick stop on the way south, Siena for the long afternoon, and a Chianti estate like Torciano to finish.

Realistic driving times from Florence to San Gimignano is about 1 hour 15 minutes. From San Gimignano to Monteriggioni is about 20 minutes. And Monteriggioni to Siena is 20 minutes. Lastly, Siena to the Chianti wine region is 30 to 45 minutes depending on the estate. You’ll want to make sure you book a tasting in advance.

Other Ways to Experience Tuscan Wine

My wine tasting at Torciano was about an hour as part of the full-day tour. If wine is the main reason you’re visiting Tuscany, you may want a more dedicated experience.

Here are some options you might consider:

• Dedicated Chianti wine tours: Half-day or full-day tours focused entirely on the Chianti region, visiting two or three wineries. These run 70 to 150 euros and give you more time at each estate.
• Montepulciano and Montalcino: South of Chianti, these towns are famous for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino, two of Tuscany’s most celebrated wines. Day tours from Florence run 100 to 180 euros.
• Wine bars in Florence: If a full tour doesn’t fit your schedule, Florence has excellent enotecas (wine bars) where you can taste local wines by the glass for a few euros each. Ask for a Chianti Classico Riserva.
• Buy at the source: Wine is remarkably affordable throughout Tuscany. A good bottle of Chianti at a local shop costs 8 to 15 euros. You don’t need a formal tasting to enjoy Tuscan wine.

7 Tips for Your Tuscany Tour from Florence

If you go the organized Tuscany day tour route, these are the essential tips to make the best of your experience based on mine.

1. Eat breakfast before you board. Most tours don’t allow food or drinks on the bus. Your first chance to eat will be at the first stop, which could be an hour or more into the day.
2. Bring a portable battery. The bus has charging ports, but they aren’t all functional. Between photos, GPS, and WiFi, your phone will drain fast.
3. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You’ll be on cobblestones all day. San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, and Siena are all hilly medieval towns with uneven surfaces.
4. Sit on the right side heading south. The best countryside views are on the right side of the bus as you drive from Florence into Chianti.
5. Budget for lunch in Siena. Most tours include the wine tasting snacks but not a full meal. Siena is your longest stop and the best place to sit down for a proper lunch. Budget 12 to 25 euros ($14 to $29 USD).
6. Keep your phone charged for Siena. The Duomo interior and Piazza del Campo are the two most photogenic spots on the entire tour. Don’t arrive with a dead battery.
7. Pace yourself at the wine tasting. It’s the last stop of a long day. The food pairings help absorb the wine, but drink water between pours. Your driver handles the road.

Final Thoughts on a Tour of Tuscany from Florence

I almost didn’t book this tour.

I worried it would be rushed, touristy, and impersonal. There’s a tradeoff when you see everything that you experience nothing.

Instead, it turned into one of the days I think about most. Not because of any single stop, but because of the way the day unfolded.

The towers caught the morning light, a fortress town from a Dante poem, a cathedral that quite literally took my breath away, and then wine with strangers who didn’t feel like strangers by the second pour.

If you’re visiting Florence and you have one day to give to Tuscany, give it to a tour like this one. I’m glad I did.

After spending many summers in Brewster with my former in-laws and my children, I started to understand why so many people return year after year. Brewster feels quieter than many Cape Cod towns, in a good way.

Like most Cape towns, Brewster offers beaches, bike rides, and sunsets over Cape Cod Bay. Route 6A runs through town, dotted with charming Cape homes and antique shops and galleries.

But the town still feels rooted in the community rather than built for tourists.

And the tide charts play a central role in Brewster, because at low tide, the bay seems to disappear, revealing miles of sand flats to explore.

It doesn’t hurt that Brewster is centrally located enough to make easy day trips to Chatham (20 minutes), Provincetown (about 40 minutes), and Hyannis (25 minutes), either.

13 Fun Things to Do in Brewster MA

Whether you are spending a long weekend or a full Cape Cod vacation here, these are the places and experiences that make Brewster worth the trip.

1. Walk the Brewster Flats at Low Tide

Walking the Brewster Flats at low tide is the single most memorable thing you can do in Brewster, and it costs nothing.

At low tide, Cape Cod Bay pulls back so far that you can walk nearly a mile out across the sandy, rippled ocean floor. The locals call this area the Brewster Flats, and there is nothing else quite like it on the Cape.

It doesn’t feel like standing at the edge of the ocean, in the typical sense. It feels like the ocean disappeared.

Families spread out across the wet sand for what feels like miles, and children crouch over tidal pools looking for tiny crabs and shells.

What always stands out to me is how quiet it becomes once you walk far enough out.

The shoreline starts to shrink behind you, the wet sand reflects the sky like glass, and even in summer people seem to lower their voices.

By late afternoon, the entire bay turns gold and silver as families slowly make their way back toward shore.

As the water recedes, tidal pools appear everywhere. You’ll spot hermit crabs, sand dollars, small fish, horseshoe crabs, and all kinds of shells.

Tidal pools are a gift when you have toddlers and young children with you. They can splash and explore without the worry of big waves.

My kids absolutely loved it, but discovering the sealife in tidal pools is fun for all ages.

The light at low tide is incredible, especially in the late afternoon when everything turns gold.

When you’re visiting the Brewster Flats, timing matters. You’ll want to check a Cape Cod Bay tide chart before you go.

Ideally, you arrive about an hour before dead low tide so you can walk out as the water drops. The best access points are Paines Creek Beach and Breakwater Beach. (Both are free parking for Brewster residents, and a daily fee for visitors, usually around $20 in summer.)

Here are some important tips to prepare for your visit to the Flats:

• Wear water shoes or old sneakers because the sand can be rough in spots, and some areas have broken shells.
• Bring a hat and sun protection because there is zero shade out on the flats.
• Carry water.
• Most importantly, keep an eye on the tide. When the water starts coming back in, it moves fast.

2. Explore Nickerson State Park

Nickerson State Park is the big draw in Brewster for anyone who loves being outdoors.

The park covers more than 1,900 acres of pine and oak forest right in the middle of Brewster, and it holds eight freshwater kettle ponds that were carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago.

Cliff Pond is the largest and most popular for swimming, kayaking, and fishing.

The trail system here is extensive. You can hike short loops of a mile or two, or connect trails for longer routes that wind past ponds and through thick forest.

The Cape Cod Rail Trail cuts right through the park if you’re walking or biking it (more on that below).

If you’re visiting with kids, the ponds have small sandy beaches that are much calmer than the ocean side.

Camping at Nickerson is a Cape Cod tradition. The park has over 400 campsites, including yurt rentals, and reservations fill up fast for summer.

If you’re thinking about a July or August trip, you’ll want to book through the Reserve America system as early as possible. Reservations typically open in February, and sites run around $30 to $70 per night, depending on the type.

You can fish in several of the ponds. Cliff, Flax, Little Cliff, and Higgins are stocked with trout, and you don’t need a boat to have a good afternoon.

Even if fishing isn’t your thing, take the drive through the park.

The road cuts through stands of white pine, the temperature drops under the canopy, and every so often, a pond you didn’t expect reveals itself through the trees.

3. Bike the Cape Cod Rail Trail through Brewster

The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a 25-mile paved path that runs from Dennis to Wellfleet, and the Brewster section is one of the most scenic stretches. The trail passes through Nickerson State Park, crosses quiet roads, and rolls through shady woods that keep you cool even on hot summer days.

You can rent bikes in Brewster at several shops near the trail entrance. Expect to pay around $25 to $40 for a half-day rental.

If you bring your own bike, you’ll find parking at the Nickerson State Park entrance on Route 6A where you can hop right on the trail.

The Brewster segment is mostly flat, making it great for families and casual riders. From Nickerson, you can ride east toward Orleans and Eastham, or head west toward Dennis.

A round trip from Nickerson to the National Seashore Visitor Center in Eastham is roughly 20 miles, so plan accordingly.

If biking is not your thing, the Rail Trail is also perfect for walking or jogging. Early mornings before 9 a.m. are the quietest times, and you will have long stretches almost to yourself.

4. Visit the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History sits right on Route 6A and is one of the best rainy-day options on this part of the Cape. But even on a sunny day, it is worth a stop for the outdoor trails alone.

Inside, the museum has exhibits on the Cape’s geology, marine life, and bird populations.

It is well done without being overwhelming, and kids will enjoy the live animal displays and the interactive touch tanks.

The real highlight is the John Wing Trail, which starts behind the museum and leads out to Wing Island.

The boardwalk crosses salt marshes and opens up to views of Cape Cod Bay. At low tide, you can walk all the way out to the island.

The full loop takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Bring binoculars if you have them, because the birding here is excellent, especially during spring and fall migration.

5. Check out the Brewster General Store

The Brewster General Store has been operating since 1866, making it among the oldest general stores on Cape Cod.

It’s right on Route 6A and looks like it has barely changed in a century, with a creaky wooden floor, low ceilings, and shelves packed with everything from penny candy to local jams.

This is a great place to pick up postcards, some Cape Cod souvenirs, and a dose of nostalgia.

Right next door, Brewster Scoop serves up 30-plus flavors of ice cream from the former post office building. It’s open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and usually there’s a line, which speaks for itself.

Plan to spend about 15 to 20 minutes browsing the Brewster General Store. You can stop in early morning for coffee, pastry, and a copy of The Cape Cod Times, or swing by on your way to the beach for snacks. Or, you can make a visit after dinner for a tasty cone.

6. Go Clamming on the Brewster Flats

If you’ve ever wanted to try clamming, Brewster is one of the best places on the Cape to do it.

At low tide, locals head out onto the Brewster Flats with buckets and clam rakes to dig for steamers and quahogs. When the water pulls back and the ocean floor opens up for nearly a mile, the clam beds are right under your feet.

My late father-in-law was not much for beach days, but he would head out onto the flats at low tide with his rake and boots and come back with a bucket of clams.

By evening, they were steamed and on the table with drawn butter and cups of clam broth for dipping. It is still one of my favorite Brewster memories.

If this sounds fun to you, you’ll need a shellfish permit from the Brewster Town Hall or the Natural Resources office on Main Street. Weekly permits are available for visitors and cost about $20. Annual non-resident permits are also available. The daily limit is one peck per permit holder, and you need to be 14 or older to dig.

Bring a clam rake, a bucket, and a mesh shellfish bag to rinse your haul in the surf. You’ll also want to wear water shoes. The flats look smooth but broken shells will find your feet.

Access the beds from Saint’s Landing Beach off Lower Road, which puts you right on the flats at low tide.

A good steamer pot is all you need to steam them that night with butter and a cold beverage.

7. Visit Stony Brook Grist Mill and the Herring Run

Every spring, thousands of herring (alewives, a type of fish) swim upstream through Stony Brook on their way to freshwater ponds to spawn.

Watching the herring run is is an experience that connects you to something much older than any Cape Cod tourist attraction.

The fish ladder at Stony Brook is the best place to watch. You’ll see the herring fight their way up a series of small pools, jumping and splashing against the current.

Peak season is usually mid-April through mid-May, and on a good day you will see hundreds of fish pushing upstream at once.

It is mesmerizing and completely free to watch.

Right next to the herring run is the Stony Brook Grist Mill, a working mill that dates to 1873.

On weekends during the summer, volunteers demonstrate how corn is ground into meal using the old waterwheel-powered stones.

You can even buy small bags of the cornmeal as a souvenir. It’s perfect for classic New England dishes like cornbread, pan-fried johnnycakes, or corn muffins alongside chowder or a summer seafood dinner.

The site is on Stony Brook Road, just off Route 6A.

The whole visit takes about 30 minutes unless you get hypnotized by the fish (which happens more than you might expect).

8. Swim at Breakwater Beach and Crosby Landing

Brewster’s beaches are on Cape Cod Bay, which means calm, warm water (by New England standards, anyway).

The bay side doesn’t get the big waves you find on the ocean side in Wellfleet or Eastham, making it ideal for children and anyone who is not the strongest swimmer.

You can wade out a long way before it gets deep, and there is none of the undertow you would get on the Atlantic side.

Breakwater Beach is one of the most popular spots, with a wide sandy stretch and easy access to the Brewster Flats at low tide.

Crosby Landing is a bit quieter and has a more natural feel, with grassy dunes and views that go on forever across the bay.

Parking at both beaches requires a permit for non-residents during summer. You buy daily or seasonal passes online, and they’re paperless. The town uses license plate readers, so there’s nothing to print or stick on your windshield.

If you’re staying at a Brewster rental or hotel, be sure to ask your host if a beach permit is included.

9. Tour Higgins Farm Windmill and Harris-Black House

The Higgins Farm Windmill stands on the grounds of the Brewster Historical Society and is one of the most photographed landmarks in town.

Built in the early 1800s, the smock-style windmill has been restored and sits on a wide green lawn.

Having never been inside a windmill before, I was fascinated by the massive wooden gears and mechanisms overhead that once turned wind into power.

The site is worth a stop for the windmill alone, but the historical society also offers demonstrations during the summer months. For instance, a blacksmith works on site, and you can watch traditional crafts demonstrated in the outbuildings.

Inside the Harris-Black House, a shingled Cape Cod home furnished with period pieces on the site, you’ll see spinning wheels, hand tools, and maritime artifacts.

It all gives you a feel for what daily life looked like in Brewster two centuries ago.

The grounds are open and free to walk. Guided tours run on a seasonal schedule (check the Brewster Historical Society website for current hours).

The whole visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes. It is on Route 6A, easy to combine with a visit to the General Store or antique shopping.

10. Chill at Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters

If you’re looking for coffee before heading out for the day, Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters is a popular stop on Route 6A. The shop roasts its own beans on site and takes sourcing seriously, with coffees sourced from growing regions around the world.

If you’re not in a rush, grab a latte and a muffin and stay awhile. The place has a great vibe.

Snowy Owl gets busy on summer mornings, especially on weekends, so arrive early if you want to avoid the longest lines.

11. Antique Shopping on Route 6A

Route 6A through Brewster is sometimes called Antique Alley, and for good reason.

You’ll discover multiple antique shops, consignment stores, and vintage dealers lining this stretch of the Old King’s Highway. In fact, you could spend an entire afternoon just pulling into one shop after another.

The shops here lean toward New England antiques: maritime items, old maps, vintage Cape Cod postcards, colonial furniture, estate jewelry, and mid-century pieces.

Prices range widely, from a few dollars for small items to serious money for rare finds.

The best approach is to just drive slowly along 6A and stop wherever a sign catches your eye. Most shops are open daily in summer, with reduced hours in spring and fall.

Even if you are not a serious buyer, browsing is half the fun. Many of the shops are tucked into old Cape homes, and the owners often know the history behind what they’re selling.

12. Browse the Art Galleries Along Route 6A

Brewster has a gallery scene that most visitors don’t expect.

Along Route 6A and the surrounding side streets, you’ll find working artists, glass studios, and small galleries tucked into old Cape Cod homes and carriage houses.

Sydenstricker Glass is a standout. The workshop and gallery are right on Route 6A, and you can watch artisans create fused glass pieces by hand. Each design is one of a kind, and the finished work spans decorative plates and bowls to ornamental panels.

Maddocks Gallery on Main Street is housed in a carriage house dating to the 1860s. The artist uses it as both his home and studio, and it is open most days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. between May and October. You’ll want to call ahead if you are visiting outside of summer.

Other galleries to look for include Underground Art Gallery (Karen North Wells), Struna Galleries, and several seasonal pop-ups that appear along 6A during the summer months.

If you’re already browsing antiques, the galleries are often right next door or across the street. It’s a great opportunity to support local artists and add a meaningful piece to your own collection.

13. Dine at the Best Restaurants in Brewster

Brewster has a small restaurant scene, but you’ll find some very good places to eat.

You can go from a casual fried clam plate to a fine-dining experience without driving more than a few minutes.

Brewster Fish House is the most talked-about spot in town. It is tiny, it does not take reservations, and the line can stretch out the door in summer.

But the seafood is exceptional, with daily specials that depend on what came off the boats that morning. Get there before 5 p.m. for dinner if you want to avoid the longest waits.

Chillingsworth is the opposite experience: an elegant, multi-course fine-dining restaurant housed in a 300-year-old estate on Route 6A.

It is one of the most acclaimed restaurants on the entire Cape and perfect for a special occasion. Reservations are a must. Expect to spend $80 to $120 per person for the prix fixe dinner.

For something more casual, JT’s Seafood is a classic Cape Cod clam shack with picnic tables, fried everything, and soft-serve ice cream. You’ll find it right on Route 6A.

Where to Stay in Brewster

Brewster has a variety of accommodation options, from resort properties to cozy B&Bs to vacation rental cottages.

Here are a few of my picks.

Ocean Edge Resort is the biggest name in town and works well for families and golfers.

This resort has hotel rooms, vacation rental condos, multiple pools, a private beach, and an 18-hole golf course designed by Geoffrey Cornish and Brian Silva. Green fees run around $80 to $130 during peak summer months.

Non-golfers will appreciate the resort’s pools (including an indoor pool for cooler days) and on-site restaurants.

Families often book the condo-style units, which come with full kitchens and more space than a standard hotel room.

Brewster By the Sea Inn offers a quieter, more intimate alternative.

This bed and breakfast sits on two acres of gardens and walking paths. The inn has just a handful of rooms, each individually decorated.

Rates typically run from $200 to $350 per night depending on the season, and breakfast is included.

The gardens are genuinely beautiful and worth a wander even if you are not staying there.

Elsewhere in Brewster, you’ll find vacation rentals are plentiful on VRBO and Airbnb, and many come with beach stickers included.

Summer rates in Brewster are generally a bit lower than places like Chatham or Provincetown, which is another reason to consider it as your base for exploring the Cape.

As with most Cape Cod vacations, you’ll want to book as early as January if you’re planning a July or August stay. Many of the best properties are booked by spring or earlier.

Flam is a village of fewer than 400 people at the head of the Aurlandsfjord, tucked into the innermost arm of the Sognefjord.

For such a small village, Flam offers a surprising number of excursion options within walking distance of the cruise pier. It may not look like much on a map, but the scenery is spectacular.

Most cruise passengers come for the Flam Railway, and it earns every bit of its reputation.

Naeroyfjord Cruise

Flam is a village, not a town. It is quieter and more compact than most cruise passengers expect, which is part of what makes it charming. But it will not fill an entire eight-hour port call on its own, so plan to pair village time with at least one excursion.

Place your water feature where you’ll notice it often, like near a seating area, close to a walkway, or outside a window you open in warm weather.

Garden water feature ideas don’t have to be expensive, either. A large ceramic bowl from a thrift store, a small submersible pump, and a few river rocks can create a tabletop fountain for under $40.

I visited in February and found open restaurants, packed trains, chestnut pasta on the menu, and enough crowds to make me rethink what “off-season” means on this stretch of coast.

Here’s how to plan a winter trip from Florence, what to expect, and what I’d do differently next time.

How to Get from Florence to Cinque Terre by Train

The most common route from Florence to Cinque Terre is by train. Plan on about 2 to 3 hours travel time, depending on your route and connections.

You’ll take a regional train from Florence Santa Maria Novella to La Spezia, the closest major station to Cinque Terre. Some trains run direct, others connect through Pisa Centrale, which is the route I took.

At La Spezia, you can switch to the Cinque Terre Express, a local train that runs up and down the coast between all five villages. Each stop is just a few minutes apart.

Here’s a quick breakdown of your options.

The train ride itself is worth paying attention to. You’ll pass the Arno river valley with bare winter trees, Carrara marble quarries in the Apuan Alps, and hilltop villages dotting the slopes along the way.

If you’re spending more than a day in Cinque Terre, the Pisa connection is a good excuse to stop for a few hours and explore the city before the second leg.

And when you arrive at La Spezia Centrale, be sure to look up. The station atrium has three frescoes from 1897 by Luigi Agretti, a local painter who was twenty years old at the time. I almost missed them because I was checking my phone.

Where to Stay in Cinque Terre

If you can swing it, stay overnight. You’ll have more time to wander and less time on trains.

For a winter visit, Riomaggiore and Manarola are the best base options. They’re smaller, quieter than Monterosso, and closest to the sunset views.

A few things to keep in mind for winter bookings: not all rentals have heating, so ask before you book. Some restaurants close or reduce hours in the off-season, so a kitchen can be a lifesaver.

What to Expect in Cinque Terre in Winter

The biggest surprise about visiting Cinque Terre in the off-season? It’s still busy.

I went in February expecting quiet villages and empty trails. The restaurants had waits. The trains between towns were full. The viewpoints had company.

If you’re picturing yourself alone on a cliffside, adjust your expectations.

Not every restaurant will be open in the off-season, but that’s not necessarily a loss. The places that close are the ones that cater to summer tourists. The ones that stay open serve the people who actually live there, and the food is usually better for it.

February along the Ligurian coast is cool and unpredictable. I had a clear day with good light, but rain is common. Average highs are around 50–55°F (10–13°C). So, along with wearing comfortable shoes, pack layers and a waterproof jacket.

The upside is that winter light photographs well, and the lemon trees give the landscape color that summer heat burns away.

When I visited Cinque Terre, several trails between towns were closed for landslide repairs. The famous Via dell’Amore (Path of Love) connecting Riomaggiore to Manarola fully reopened in August 2024 after 12 years of work.

It now requires timed-entry tickets (capacity is 400 per hour). As of March 2026, access is included in the Cinque Terre Card, but you still need a reservation.

One more thing. The public bathroom situation is rough, especially off-season when some facilities are closed. I encountered one of the worst restroom situations of my entire time in Italy.

You’ll want to use the restrooms at the train station or a restaurant before you start exploring, and don’t count on finding a clean public option along the way.

Three Towns in One Day: What You’ll See

Cinque Terre is five villages strung along a few miles of Ligurian coastline, each one different. Start in Riomaggiore and work your way north. The scenery builds as you go.

Riomaggiore is the southernmost, with colorful buildings stacked up a steep hillside and a rocky harbor at the bottom. Manarola has the classic panoramic view you’ve seen in every Cinque Terre photo. Corniglia sits on a hilltop above the sea, the quietest of the five, reached by a 382-step staircase from the train station. Vernazza has a sheltered natural harbor, a medieval watchtower, and the most relaxed feel. Monterosso al Mare is the largest, with the only real sandy beaches and more of a resort atmosphere.

I visited three of the five by train: Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Vernazza. Each one is just a few minutes apart by the Cinque Terre Express.

Here’s what to expect in each.

Riomaggiore

If ever a place makes a breathtaking first impression, Cinque Terre is it. Before you even reach the village of Riomaggiore, the cliffs drop into turquoise water and you’re stopping to take photos on the coastal walkway.

You enter through a pedestrian tunnel decorated with stone mosaics by the artist Silvio Benedetto. The shaped tiles and glazed panels depict the history of the coast.

Then you step out into the village.

The buildings stack up the hillside at precarious angles, and as you walk up through narrow lanes, the views open wider with every turn.

Prickly pear, spurge, and yucca grow wild along the hillside.

On Via Colombo, the main street, laundry hangs between pink and cream buildings and lemon trees are heavy with ripe fruit even in February. You’ll find this street lined with small shops selling colorful ceramics (good keepsakes) and local limoncello.

The terraced hillsides above the village are vineyards, and if you see Sciacchetrà on a menu, order it. It’s a sweet dessert wine local to this coast, made from grapes dried on those same terraces.

At the bottom of Riomaggiore, near the harbor, there’s a small opening in the rocks where you can reach the water. I took my shoes off and put my toes in the Tyrrhenian Sea in February. Cold, but worth it if you like collecting oceans.

I spent about an hour and a half in Riomaggiore before catching the train to Manarola. If you have more time, here are a few things worth seeking out:

• Church of San Giovanni Battista. A 14th-century Gothic church near the top of the village with a rose window and striped stone facade typical of Ligurian architecture.
• Sanctuary of Montenero. A hilltop sanctuary above Riomaggiore with panoramic coastal views, reached by trail or steep road.
• Riomaggiore Harbor. The dramatic rocky harbor lined with colorful houses is one of the most photographed scenes in Cinque Terre.

Manarola

Manarola has the single best panoramic view of the five villages. If you take one photo in Cinque Terre, take it here.

You arrive by walking through a tunnel from the train station and step into Piazza Dario Capellini, where stone mosaics are set into the ground beneath your feet. From there the village drops downhill toward the harbor.

The famous viewpoint is along the cliffside path above the harbor. From there you can see the full scene in one frame: pastel buildings cascading down to a tiny harbor with fishing boats below.

If you want a waterfront table, put your name in early and explore while you wait. In February I waited a while, but that patience comes easier when you’re watching fishing boats in a Ligurian harbor.

When my table was ready, it was worth the wait. The wine and limoncello poured freely, the trofie di castagne, the chestnut pasta this coast is known for, and the water views made for an experience I’ll never forget.

I spent about two hours in Manarola, the longest stop of the day. The last of it was waiting for the train, watching the sun drop behind iron railings silhouetted against the water.

If you have more time, a few things worth seeking out in Manarola:

• Manarola Scenic Overlook. The cliffside path above the harbor provides the classic panoramic view seen in most Cinque Terre photography.
• Church of San Lorenzo. A Gothic Ligurian church dating to the 14th century with a rose window and detached bell tower.
• Punta Bonfiglio Walkway. A scenic waterfront path popular at sunset with benches, viewpoints, and rocky sea access.

Vernazza

I arrived in Vernazza at twilight and walked fast, down the main street, past an old wooden door, past the pebble mosaic sun and wave pattern set into Piazza Marconi, and straight to the harbor rocks to catch the last of the sunset.

I made it just in time. A couple sat silhouetted on the rocks, watching the sun drop into the Tyrrhenian.

Vernazza has a natural harbor that’s more sheltered than the other villages, with a sandy beach area and waterfront restaurants. Of the three towns, it felt the most relaxed.

If your timing works out, plan to be at the harbor rocks around sunset. The light turns the water gold, then pink, and couples gather on the stone walls and benches to watch it happen. It’s one of the more romantic spots on the coast, and it doesn’t feel staged.

After dark is worth staying for.

Walking the back streets and connected alleys by the waterfront, it’s easy to imagine what this village looked like centuries ago.

I found the Chapel of Santa Marta almost by accident, a small stone chapel that looks misplaced in the street yet is perfectly belonging, lit softly behind an iron grille. It was the kind of thing you only find because you stayed past the comfortable hour.

I spent about an hour in Vernazza before catching the return train via La Spezia. If you have more time, a few things worth seeking out:

• Castello Doria. A medieval defensive tower overlooking the harbor with sweeping coastal views.
• Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia. A seaside church built directly beside Vernazza’s harbor with a distinctive octagonal bell tower.
• Vernazza Harbor. The natural harbor, lined with fishing boats and waterfront restaurants, is one of the most atmospheric gathering spots in the region.

After the sun went down, the village changed. The streets filled with warm lamplight, the church tower stood against a pink sky, and the harbor reflected the lights of the buildings above it. I found a small chapel tucked into the stone, barely marked, lit softly behind an iron grille. It was the kind of thing you only find because you stayed past the comfortable hour.

I spent about an hour in Vernazza before catching the return train via La Spezia. If you have more time, a few things worth seeking out:

Two Towns I Skipped: Corniglia & Monterosso al Mare

Three villages was the right number for a day trip from Florence, but if you’re staying overnight or just want to know what you’re skipping, here’s what’s in the other two.

Corniglia

Corniglia is the only village that sits on a hilltop instead of at the water. From the train station, you either climb the Lardarina staircase (382 steps) or take a shuttle bus up.

It’s the smallest and quietest of the five, surrounded by terraced vineyards instead of harbor restaurants. If you want the least crowded Cinque Terre experience, this is it.

• Lardarina Staircase: 382 steps connecting the train station to the village. It’s a workout, but the views on the way up are worth the effort.
• Church of San Pietro: A 14th-century Ligurian Gothic church with a rose window and marble carvings, often considered the most beautiful church in Cinque Terre.
• Terraced Vineyards: Corniglia is known for the vineyards that wrap around the village above the sea, where the local Sciacchetrà wine has been produced for centuries.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso is the largest of the five towns, with sandy beaches, beachfront hotels, and more of a classic seaside resort feel. If you’re traveling with kids or want a place to spread out a towel, Monterosso is the practical choice.

• Il Gigante (Neptune Statue): A massive weathered statue carved into the rocks near Fegina Beach. It was built in the early 1900s and damaged by storms, but what remains is still striking.
• Monterosso Beaches: The largest sandy beaches in Cinque Terre. In summer they fill with umbrellas and sunbathers, but in winter you can walk the shoreline with almost no one around.
• Capuchin Monastery and Church of San Francesco: A hilltop monastery above the village with coastal views and artwork inside, including a painting attributed to Van Dyck.
• Old Town Medieval Tower: Part of the original coastal fortifications, now a landmark you can spot from the waterfront promenade.

What to Eat in Cinque Terre in Winter

The must-try is trofie di castagne (chestnut pasta). It’s a traditional Ligurian specialty with roots that go back centuries. In the mountains above the coast, where the terrain was too steep for wheat, chestnut trees were the main crop. Locals milled the nuts into flour and made pasta from it. Ordering it in February means eating it in its actual season.

Other dishes to look for:

• Pesto alla Genovese – Liguria is its birthplace, and the local version is different from what you get at home.
• Fresh seafood – Anchovies, mussels, and whatever came in that morning.
• Focaccia di Recco – Thin, crispy, stuffed with soft cheese.
• Farinata – Chickpea flatbread, served hot. Simple and good.
• Limoncello – Made from the lemons you’ll see growing everywhere. Don’t leave without trying it.

Is a Day Trip to Cinque Terre Worth It?

Honestly? Yes, with a caveat. You will not see everything, and you will get home late. But the afternoon and evening I spent on this coast was one of the best days of the trip.

I had ten days to cross Italy from Venice down to Positano. Most places got a day, maybe two. Cinque Terre got one, and I packed it full.

Here’s how the day actually played out.

1-Day Itinerary for Cinque Terre

That is a long day. About five hours of train, five and a half hours in the villages. If that ratio bothers you, stay overnight.

But here is what that ratio bought me: I arrived in Riomaggiore when the afternoon light was golden and warm. I had limoncello in Manarola while the sun dropped over the harbor. And I walked into Vernazza at the exact moment the sky turned pink and the streetlights came on.

If I had caught a 7 AM train and arrived at 10, I would have had more hours but worse light and midday shadows on every west-facing building on the coast.

Trying to squeeze in all five villages in a day trip would have meant 20 minutes per town and a lot of running for trains.

Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Vernazza gave me a full afternoon with room to sit down, eat a real meal, and stay somewhere long enough to notice things.

Could I have used another day? Absolutely.

Would I skip it if a day trip was all I had? Not a chance.

7 Tips for Visiting Cinque Terre in Winter

1. Buy train tickets in advance. Regional trains between Florence, Pisa, and La Spezia fill up around holidays and Carnival. Book your Florence connection ahead of time.

2. Watch the clock. In February, sunset comes around 5:30 PM. Factor in train transfers, a long lunch, and the temptation to linger, and your daylight goes faster than you think.

3. Order the chestnut pasta. Trofie di castagne is the traditional winter pasta of this coast. You’re eating local history. Ask for it.

4. Bring cash. Some smaller shops and restaurants are cash-only. ATMs exist but aren’t plentiful.

5. Use the restrooms strategically. The public bathroom situation is rough, especially off-season when some facilities are closed. Go when you can.

6. Book Via dell’Amore tickets. The Path of Love requires timed-entry reservations, even in winter. Capacity is 400 per hour. As of March 2026, it’s included in the Cinque Terre Card.

Final Thoughts on Cinque Terre in Winter

Cinque Terre in winter is not empty, not always sunny, and not the lazy coastal stroll you might be imagining. It’s also one of the most unexpectedly rewarding winter destinations I’ve visited in Italy.

My mother’s only memory of her grandmother, my great-grandmother Otina who came to America from a small village in southern Italy, is sitting at her feet beside the stove. Otina held up a nickel. “Cinque,” she said.

Cinque Terre. “Five lands.” The name didn’t mean much to me until I was standing on the shore of one. More than a hundred years later, Ottina’s great-granddaughter was counting coastlines instead of coins.

Go to Cinque Terre in winter. Just plan to stay longer than I did, if you can.

Some towns are built around walkable restaurants, harbor views, and activity. Others are quieter, more rural, and better for beach days, scenic drives, and relaxing at a rental house. The right area depends on what kind of Vineyard trip you want.

Edgartown is the most polished town on Martha’s Vineyard and the most popular area for first-time visitors. It’s where to stay in Martha’s Vineyard without a car.

The main street is lined with historic whaling-era captains’ houses, white clapboard inns, and restaurants that range from pub fare to fine dining. The architecture is beautiful and the evenings are quiet.

If you stay in Edgartown, you’ll be able to walk to restaurants, shops, and the harbor from pretty much any hotel in the center of town. Nearby are some of the island’s most sought-after vacation rentals in nearby Katama, the beachside area between downtown Edgartown and South Beach.

You’ll also find the most pristine beaches here. South Beach is about a five-minute drive or bike ride away, and the Chappy Ferry is right there if you want to explore the quieter Chappaquiddick.

That said, Edgartown lodging runs higher than other towns on the island, and parking gets tight in the summer. And if anyone in your travel party wants nightlife or evening activity, Oak Bluffs might be a better fit for them.

If this area sounds right for you, here are some of the best places to stay in Edgartown, with summer pricing to help you plan.

• Harbor View Hotel. The flagship Edgartown hotel, with waterfront rooms overlooking the lighthouse and harbor. Summer rates typically start around $400–700/night depending on dates and room type, and the veranda alone is worth it.

• The Christopher. A mid-range option on Main Street, clean and updated, with walking distance to everything. $350–600/night in summer.
• VRBO/Airbnb rentals. Edgartown has a strong rental market, with historic homes that sleep 6–10 guests, typically $3,500–6,000+ per week in summer.

2. Oak Bluffs

Lively and Family-Friendly Lodging

Oak Bluffs is the liveliest town on Martha’s Vineyard.

If you want to walk to the beach, grab dinner, and still have somewhere to go after dark, this is your base. You’ll find the iconic gingerbread cottages, the Flying Horses Carousel, and Inkwell Beach all within a few blocks.

Oak Bluffs is also more affordable than Edgartown. It hosts the best nightlife on the island as well as plenty of family-friendly activities like the carousel, the arcade, and bowling. It’s probably also the best town to stay on Martha’s Vineyard without a car.

It does get noisier than other towns on summer weekends, though. Like Edgartown, parking here is tight, and some of the hotels might feel a bit dated compared to Edgartown’s boutique options. But that’s part of its charm.

If Oak Bluffs sounds like your speed, here are some places to look at.

• The Summercamp Hotel. A renovated hotel with a fun, camp-themed design that’s great for families. Rooms start around $300–500/night in summer.
• The Narragansett House. A classic guesthouse near Circuit Ave., and more affordable than the Edgartown inns. $200–350/night.
• The Island Inn. A larger property with a pool and more space, set slightly outside the town center but still walkable. $200–350/night.
• VRBO/Airbnb rentals. Cottages and houses near the harbor or the Camp Meeting Association. $2,500–5,000/week for a 3-bedroom in summer.

3. Vineyard Haven (Tisbury)

Convenient and Budget-Friendly Martha’s Vineyard Lodging

Vineyard Haven, officially named Tisbury, is the most practical town on Martha’s Vineyard.

It’s home to the island’s year-round ferry terminal, along with grocery stores, restaurants, a beloved local bookshop, and services that stay open well after Labor Day. This central location also makes it a convenient home base for exploring the rest of Martha’s Vineyard.

Plus, it’s often one of the more affordable areas to stay, with hotel rates averaging about $165–300/night in summer.

The tradeoff is that it’s less scenic than Edgartown or Oak Bluffs, with more of a working-town feel. There’s no large ocean beach within walking distance, but Lambert’s Cove and Owen Park are a short drive away. It’s also a dry town (no package stores) but bars and restaurants serve alcohol.

Here are a couple of standout options for your stay:

• The Nobnocket Boutique Inn. A year-round boutique inn with strong reviews and one of the best lodging values on the island. Summer rates generally run about $300–800/night depending on room type and season.
• The Doctors House B&B. A small, friendly B&B just steps from Main Street. Budget-friendlier by Martha’s Vineyard standards (starting in the mid-$200s depending on season and availability).

There are only a handful of places to stay in Vineyard Haven, so if the area feels like a fit, you’ll want to book early.

4. East Chop

Quiet Harbor Views and Residential Martha’s Vineyard Rentals

East Chop is technically part of Oak Bluffs, but it feels like its own world. It’s a quiet residential bluff between Vineyard Haven Harbor and Oak Bluffs Harbor.

The East Chop Lighthouse is just up the street. You won’t find many hotels here, but there are plenty of private vacation rentals, many with harbor views and quiet residential surroundings.

The appeal is the combination of privacy and location. You’re within walking distance of both Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs, and the harbor sunsets from the porch are hard to beat.

The tradeoff is limited walkable dining. A grocery run means a longer walk or short drive into Vineyard Haven.

Interested in staying in East Chop? There are fewer rentals here than in other parts of Martha’s Vineyard, but that’s part of the appeal. Most rental properties here are private 3–4 bedroom homes, often with large porches, harbor views, and a quieter feel than downtown Oak Bluffs.

A typical East Chop rental is a 3–4 bedroom house with water views. Expect to pay $3,000–5,000/week in summer, or $300–500/night for shorter stays. That’s generally more than Oak Bluffs, but less than many up-island rentals.

5. Up-Island (West Tisbury, Chilmark, Aquinnah)

Rural Up-Island Retreats and Luxury Rentals

The rural western half of Martha’s Vineyard is a completely different experience, and it’s my favorite. We spent a weekend before Memorial Day in Aquinnah with the kids as teenagers, and it was truly memorable.

There’s no downtown here, no walkable restaurants.

What you get instead is space. Think large rental houses on lovely lots, farm-stand breakfasts, and nearness to some of the most beautiful spots on the island. This includes Menemsha, Lambert’s Cove, and the Aquinnah Cliffs.

This is where to stay if you’re after the quieter, less touristy side of Martha’s Vineyard. It’s also a photographer’s dream.

It’s private and the scenery is stunning. The beaches are more remote (many people consider these the best beaches on the island), and the pace is slower.

Up-island is also ideal for multi-generational groups or families who prefer more space.

Even within the Up-Island area, each town is unique.

Aquinnah is home to the Aquinnah Cliffs, quiet beaches, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on Martha’s Vineyard. Chilmark offers a mix of rolling farmland, luxury homes, and the iconic fishing village of Menemsha. West Tisbury is the island’s rural heart, with farms, art galleries, winding back roads, and a more local feel.

You will need a car for everything, though. Grocery stores are 15–20 minutes away, restaurant options are limited, and nightlife is nonexistent. Chilmark is a dry town, and up-island restaurants generally only serve beer and wine with meals. A few places also allow BYOB.

For some island visitors, that’s the whole point.

If you want to rent a house up-island, book well in advance and look for rentals:

• VRBO/Airbnb rentals. A typical up-island rental is a 4–6 bedroom farmhouse or modern home, running $4,000–8,000/week in summer. Rates drop in shoulder season.

Once you decide where to stay on Martha’s Vineyard, here’s a booking strategy that works.

Booking timeline:

• January–February: Book summer vacation rentals (VRBO, Airbnb). The large family houses in West Tisbury and Chilmark go first.
• March–April: Book summer hotel rooms. Edgartown hotels fill before Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.
• May–June: Last-minute summer availability is rare but not impossible. Check cancellation inventory on Booking.com and Expedia.

You might spend the morning wandering quiet cobblestone streets and end the day surrounded by yachts and designer storefronts.

If you’re planning a Southern Spain itinerary, Marbella makes an ideal base for exploring this stretch of the Costa del Sol. Continue reading to learn about my favorite places and day trips along the coast.

Exploring the Costa del Sol

I flew into Málaga Airport (AGP) from Boston on a Sunday afternoon in June. Málaga is the main gateway to the Costa del Sol, Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast in the Andalusia region, and Marbella is about 30 miles (50 km) west along the highway.

The taxi to Marbella took about 45 minutes and cost €60–80 ($65–87) depending on traffic and time of day. Bus service is also available if you’re on a tighter budget.

Once I arrived in the Costa del Sol, I explored Marbella’s old town, drove into the hills to Mijas, and meandered Puerto Banús.

“Costa del Sol” literally translates to “Coast of the Sun,” which truly fits the destination. You’ll find warm Mediterranean weather, long sunny days, and beach towns stretching along Spain’s southern coast.

But what stood out most was how varied the Costa del Sol felt from one stop to the next, far beyond the beach destination reputation most travelers associate with the region.

Marbella as a Base to Explore the Costa del Sol

Using Marbella Costa del Sol as your home base makes sense because it’s easy to combine beach towns, white villages, and larger Andalusian cities without constantly changing hotels. Most of the places I visited on this trip worked well as day trips or overnight extensions from a Marbella base.

Here are some options you might consider when you choose Marbella as your home base.

Distances from Marbella

• Puerto Banús: 10 minutes by car or taxi
• Mijas Pueblo: 30 minutes by car
• Málaga city center: 45–60 minutes by car
• Ronda: about 1.5 hours by car
• Nerja: about 1.5 hours by car
• Córdoba: about 2 hours by car
• Seville: about 2.5 hours by car (or take the organized FAM trip like I did)
• Granada: about 2.5-3 hours by car, or 6 hours by car via Seville if you’re making a loop

For the Costa del Sol specifically, having a car gives you the most flexibility for hitting Mijas and the smaller beach towns. But Marbella itself is walkable, and taxis to Puerto Banús are cheap and plentiful.

Where to Stay in Marbella

I spent 5 nights on the Costa del Sol at the NH Marbella hotel along Marbella’s Golden Mile.

The hotel is a solid mid-range option: clean and modern with a pool that was a welcome break after long afternoons exploring in the Andalusian heat.

Located right on the main road, it is about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town and promenade with easy access to the beach.

If NH Collection Marbella is booked, you might also consider these hotels:

• Best Budget Hotel: Hotel San Cristóbal, a solid value option within walking distance of both the beach and Marbella’s Old Town.
• Best Mid-Range Hotel: Amàre Beach Hotel Marbella, an adults-only beachfront hotel with a stylish atmosphere and easy access to Old Town restaurants and nightlife.
• Best Luxury Hotel: Marbella Club Hotel, one of Marbella’s iconic luxury resorts, known for its beachfront setting, gardens, and classic Costa del Sol glamour.

Why the Costa del Sol Deserves More Than a Beach Day

The Costa del Sol runs about 93 miles (150 km.) along Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast, from Málaga in the east to just past Estepona in the west.

Most of the tourist infrastructure clusters around Marbella and Torremolinos. But the real culture reveals itself when you delve inland. Go up into the hill towns, into the old quarters, and through the morning markets.

You’ll be delighted that the weather cooperates almost year-round.

June through September averages 86°F (30°C) with almost zero rain. Even the shoulder months stay warm enough for outdoor dining and long walks through town.

My trip was in early June, and every evening felt like a gift. I enjoyed warm air, no humidity, and sunsets that lasted past 9:30 PM.

If you’re based in Marbella, you can reach Mijas in 30 minutes, Puerto Banús in 10, and Málaga in under an hour. That makes it an ideal base for covering the Costa del Sol without switching hotels every night.

Here’s what you can expect.

1. Marbella Old Town and the Orange Square

History, Charm, and Orange Trees

Marbella’s Old Town is a tangle of narrow streets, white buildings, and the kind of quiet plazas where people sit with coffee for two hours and nobody rushes them.

The center of it all is the Plaza de los Naranjos, the Orange Square. It’s named for the trees that shade the outdoor restaurant tables.

Remarkably, it’s been the heart of Marbella since the 15th century, and it still works.

I walked through the Old Town on my first evening in Marbella. The conference had an opening reception at 8:30 PM, which is early by Spanish standards, and the walk from NH Marbella into the old quarter took about 15 minutes.

The streets were warm and mostly empty. Bougainvillea spilled over the white walls. A few restaurants were just starting to fill up.

The Orange Square itself is small enough to cross in a minute but charming enough to take pause. The orange trees provide natural shade, and the restaurants that ring the plaza serve solid Spanish food at tourist-area prices. It’s not the cheapest meal in Marbella, but the setting earns the markup.

Beyond the square, the old town rewards wandering.

You’ll want to visit Iglesia de la Encarnación, a church dating to the 16th century. It was built partly on the site of a former mosque after the Christian reconquest of the city.

Then look for the remnants of the old Moorish fortress walls along the surrounding streets.

Together, they offer a glimpse into just how much history is layered into Marbella’s Old Town.

The side alleys around the Orange Square are also worth exploring for flower-filled courtyards and small plazas for picturesque scenes.

You’ll also find small shops selling Andalusian ceramics, olive oil, leather goods, and other locally inspired souvenirs that feel far more authentic than the commercial strips closer to the beach.

If you have extra time, continue downhill toward Marbella’s beachfront promenade.

The contrast between the quiet old quarter and the lively waterfront gives you a better sense of how Marbella blends historic charm with resort-town energy.

2. Puerto Banús

Yachts, Shopping, and People-Watching

Puerto Banús is the glamour stop on any Marbella Costa del Sol itinerary. It’s about 10 minutes by taxi from Marbella’s Old Town and even closer from NH Collection Marbella. I took a cab there, which was much easier than dealing with marina parking.

This is where the Costa del Sol’s wealth and glamour are on full display.

The marina is lined with superyachts.

The streets behind it are packed with luxury storefronts.

The cocktail bars charge accordingly.

Fortunately, you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy Puerto Banús. The best activity there is free: walking the marina and watching the boats. Some of these yachts are legitimately enormous.

You’ll likely see exotic cars, like Lamborghinis and Corvettes, which are almost as common along the streets nearby.

And the people-watching from a waterfront bench is entertainment in itself.

The shopping ranges from luxury boutiques like Gucci, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana to more approachable stores along the side streets. Luxury car dealerships and showrooms are near the marina, too, displaying high-end vehicles that feel perfectly in character with Puerto Banús.

Even if you’re not shopping, the window displays tell the story of what the Costa del Sol became in the 1960s, when Puerto Banús was developed as a luxury playground for Europe’s elite.

On my visit to Puerto Banús, I stopped for boquerones fritos (lightly fried anchovies), a regional favorite along Spain’s southern coast paired with a glass of cava (Spanish sparkling wine). My table overlooked the beach and Mediterranean Sea for a truly memorable experience.

After lunch, I kicked off my sandals and walked along the wooden beach walkways (the sand is hot if you’re barefoot!). From the shoreline of Playa de Puerto Banús, you can see La Concha rising behind Marbella. This gives the landscape a dramatic natural backdrop beyond the marina and luxury shops.

I recommend Puerto Banús as a half-day visit. You can walk the marina, browse the shops, have lunch or a drink, and then head back to Marbella or continue up to Mijas.

If you decide to stay the full day, you might rent beach loungers for the afternoon, book a short boat cruise or catamaran excursion, or grab a drink at sunset when the marina crowds begin to thin out.

Unless shopping is your main agenda, you probably don’t need more than a half day here.

A visit to Puerto Banus offers a glimpse into how “the other half lives” on the Costa del Sol, making for a perfect escape for a day trip.

3. Mijas Pueblo

The White Village Above the Coast

Mijas was a highlight of my Costa del Sol time, and I almost didn’t expect it.

The day before the TBEX conference started, the organizers offered a complimentary excursion up to Mijas Pueblo, the hilltop village about 30 minutes above the coast. By 10 AM we were walking through whitewashed streets with views of the Mediterranean below and the Andalusian mountains behind us.

Mijas Pueblo is a textbook white village.

White villages, known as pueblos blancos in Spain, are traditional Andalusian towns famous for their whitewashed buildings, narrow streets, and hilltop settings designed to reflect the intense southern sun.

And Mijas didn’t disappoint.

Every building is white.

The streets are narrow and mostly car-free.

Burros (donkeys) are still part of the town’s identity, though the controversial donkey taxi rides have been scaled back in recent years. You can still take a burro ride through town if that experience appeals to you.

The village is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes, but the details slow you down: hand-painted ceramic tiles on the walls, geraniums in every window box, and scenic overlooks where you can see all the way to the coast and, on a clear day, across the Mediterranean to the coast of Morocco.

During my visit, calima, Saharan dust storms that occasionally sweep across southern Spain from North Africa, had recently passed through the region. The famous whitewashed buildings looked slightly muted at first, though the town regularly cleans them to preserve Mijas Pueblo’s postcard-perfect charm.

Our guided tour covered the main square, the 17th-century chapel carved into the rock (Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña), and several scenic overlooks above the village.

The rock chapel is genuinely surprising: it’s built directly into a cliff face, and the interior is small but beautiful. If you visit on your own, don’t miss it. Bring a coin offering if you’d like to leave a remembrance for a loved one.

As you continue uphill, you’ll also pass remnants of the old city walls, a small fountain garden filled with flowers, and the historic oval bullring at the top of town. Bullfighting remains controversial in Spain today, and the arena now functions primarily as a historic landmark and cultural attraction.

One of the prettiest streets to walk is Calle San Sebastián, where flower-covered walls frame views back toward the village’s white houses and the sea below.

Mijas Pueblo is also a wonderful place for slow browsing.

We wandered through small artisan shops and local markets selling hand-painted Andalusian tiles, ceramics, olive wood crafts, leather goods, spices, and bottles of local Spanish wine.

Mijas is also home to CAC Mijas, a contemporary art museum known for works by Picasso and Dalí, which feels surprisingly modern against the backdrop of the historic white village. It’s a must-see stop if you’re an art-lover.

Back in town, I loved walking the landscaped promenades lined with flowers, palms, and snack vendors selling roasted peanuts.

Near the center of town, we also passed a restaurant preparing an enormous pan of paella in the front window, the kind of scene that immediately makes you want to stop for lunch.

I’d plan at least a half day for Mijas Pueblo, or closer to a full day if you want time for shopping, lunch, museum stops, and a relaxed drive back along the coast. Between the mountain views, small shops, scenic walks, and waterfront stops on the return trip, this ended up being one of the most memorable days of my time on the Costa del Sol.

If you enjoy Mijas Pueblo, other famous white villages within driving distance of Málaga include Frigiliana (about 1 hour), Ronda (about 1.5 hours), and Casares (about 1 hour).

Where to Eat Along the Costa del Sol

Spanish meal times threw me off on day one. Lunch starts around 2:00 PM, and dinner rarely begins before 9:00 PM. By my third day, I’d adjusted, and the rhythm actually makes sense once you stop fighting it. A late breakfast, a big lunch, tapas in the early evening, and a late dinner if you’re still hungry.

Best Restaurants in Marbella

In Marbella, two evening food experiences stood out.

The Farm Marbella in the Old Town felt cozy, authentic, and tucked among the small shops and winding streets of Marbella’s historic center. It was extremely busy during our visit, but they still managed to seat our group of six. Reservations are a smart idea if you’re traveling in summer.

We stopped in for cava, cocktails, and tapas around sunset. The table quickly filled with olives, fresh vegetables and dip, crispy appetizers, and sesame-crusted tuna served with soy sauce. The atmosphere felt relaxed and social, the kind of place where you naturally linger over drinks and small plates late into the evening.

Another memorable meal was at Restaurante La Barca along the waterfront promenade. The atmosphere felt noticeably more upscale, with elegant outdoor seating overlooking the water. There was a wait for a table, but strolling the beachfront at sunset made the time pass quickly.

Once seated, we ordered fresh shellfish, glasses of cava, and later espresso martinis alongside a massive seafood paella served directly in the pan. The paella arrived steaming hot and loaded with mussels, shrimp, clams, and langoustines. It easily became one of the standout meals of the trip.

It was one of those long Spanish dinners where nobody rushes you from the table, and the evening stretches naturally late into the night.

Here are a few more tips for eating in Marbella:

• Old Town restaurants around the Orange Square serve reliable Spanish fare. Expect to pay €15–25 ($16–27) for a solid lunch with a drink.
• For seafood, look for the chiringuitos (beach restaurants) along the Paseo Marítimo. Grilled sardines on a stick (espetos) are the local specialty and cost almost nothing.

Where to Eat when Visiting Mijas

When it comes to food in Mijas, consider these tips:

• Lunch at a terrace restaurant in the village center is a must. The views add as much to the meal as the food does. Budget €12–20 ($13–22) per person.
• Look for places serving local goat cheese and Andalusian gazpacho.

On the drive back toward Marbella, we stopped at Beach Club Higuerón in Fuengirola for a hosted lunch that turned out to be one of the best meals of the trip. The venue sits right on the beachfront with an infinity pool, palm trees, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Mediterranean.

The menu is curated by Chef Diego Gallegos, and it showed.

Course after course arrived beautifully plated: artisan bread with olive oil, a bright and innovative ceviche, fresh seafood, and elegantly composed fish dishes that felt more fine dining than beach club. A sommelier poured local wines between courses while the sea stretched out behind the glass.

If you’re driving between Mijas and Marbella, Beach Club Higuerón is worth a deliberate stop for an elevated experience. It’s the kind of place you come for lunch and end up staying through the afternoon.

Puerto Banús

Puerto Banús was a different story entirely. At La Pesquera del Faro, a chiringuito on Levante Beach, I ordered boquerones fritos and a glass of cava. The anchovies arrived crispy and golden on paper, the cava was cold, and the Mediterranean was right there.

No reservations, no tasting menu, just the kind of simple beachfront meal the Costa del Sol does better than anywhere.

The main tip for eating in Puerto Banús: skip the waterfront restaurants at the marina’s edge. Walk one or two streets back for the same food at roughly half the price. Budget €20–35 ($22–38) for a waterfront lunch with drinks, or €12–20 ($13–22) one block inland.

Prices can fluctuate seasonally, but these ranges should give you a reasonable sense of what to expect along the Costa del Sol. The gap between waterfront and side-street pricing, though, is probably permanent

Final Thoughts on Marbella Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol surprised me. I went for a conference and left with a genuine appreciation for this stretch of coast.

Marbella’s Old Town has the charm that the resort strip doesn’t advertise. Mijas is worth the 30-minute drive into the hills even if you only have a few hours. And Puerto Banús is the kind of place where you go for the spectacle and end up staying for the sunset over the marina.

Do you really need a car on Martha’s Vineyard?

The island is just under 100 square miles with no traffic lights and one main road running east to west with a handful of scenic routes branching off it. No town is more than 30 minutes from any other by car.

You’ll find a public bus system that connects every town on the island, but the right choice between car, bus, and bike depends on what kind of trip you want.

So the honest answer is: maybe.

Beyond budget, it depends on three things. Where you are staying, what you want to do, and how much you care about sticking to a schedule.

For a trip based in one town (Oak Bluffs or Edgartown), the bus and a bike will cover most of what you need. For a trip that includes Aquinnah, the up-island beaches, and remote trailheads, bring a car or rent one on-island.

I’ve done both: short stays and day trips on the Vineyard without a car, and longer stays in Aquinnah with one.

You can skip the car if:

• You are staying in Oak Bluffs or Edgartown and plan to stick mostly to those towns.
• You are comfortable relying on the VTA bus for longer trips (it works, but runs on island time).
• You plan to rent bikes and ride the paved path between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown.
• You are visiting for a day trip and staying in the ferry town.

You need a car if:

• You want to explore Aquinnah, Menemsha, or the up-island beaches and trails. (It’s a long bus ride.)
• You are staying in Chilmark, West Tisbury, or Aquinnah, where there’s no walkable town center and limited bus service.
• You’re traveling with small children, heavy beach gear, or anyone with mobility issues.
• You want to hit multiple towns in a single day without waiting for a bus.
• You’re visiting in the off-season, when bus routes run on reduced schedules and Uber/Lyft availability drops.
