Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 Released

Microsoft on Tuesday released Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2007, a big update to its productivity suite. With the next major version of the suite—Office 10—not due until early next year, SP2 will be the dominant version of the world's leading productivity software for a while.

The most newsworthy capability added by the service pack is support for a broader range of file formats, Open Document Formats (ODF, the open-standard document formats used by OpenOffice) and Adobe PDF in particular. It also allows users to uninstall service pack updates individually, using Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office Suite. PCMag.com got an early look at the service pack, though not at the uninstall tool.

It's been speculated in the tech press that the support for Adobe's page definition format finally being baked into Office was a result of a court ruling or agreement with Adobe, but since many other third-party products have long included the ability to save to PDF format, the move seems more a sign of Microsoft acknowledging the popularity of the competitor's format. Incidentally, the option for saving as PDF also offers to save the file in Microsoft's competing XPS format.

A representative for Microsoft explained the move as follows: "As far as including PDF, this is not a result of a court ruling or some other agreement. The decision to add PDF, and XPS, support to Office is consistent with our long held belief that customers should be able to choose the document format that best meets their needs in a given situation. This is why Microsoft has supported many formats in Office in the past and is including support for these additional formats in SP2."

Microsoft also claims improved performance with multiple graphics elements present, better printout quality, and as the Office Sustained Engineering blog notes, "Improved interoperability using standard DrawingML markup to describe the visual properties of the SmartArt graphic and Substantial improvements to Forms-based authentication support in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SPD." Those last won't affect most everyday users, but there are many fixes and app-specific updates that will be welcome productivity adds. Access gets the ability to export reports to Excel spreadsheets, Excel gets improved charting functionality, and Outlook and PowerPoint get improved performance.

Service Pack 2 updates all editions of Office from Basic to Ultimate, and all Office applications. This means not just the biggies—Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint—but also InfoPath, Publisher, OneNote, Groove, Access, SharePoint, Project, Visio, and InterConnect. It also updates shared ancillary programs such as Proofing Tools, Printing Assistant, and Viewers, plus updates for all languages.
Service Pack 2 includes more than 2,000 updates in all. For this reason, the update can take a while if you have a lot of apps that haven't been updated.

The Microsoft team warned me that the update could take more than an hour to install, but on a 2GHz dual-core Athlon Vista machine with 2GB RAM, it only about 15 minutes. Of course, the update time depends on how many Office apps are installed on your system, how up-to-date they are, and the speed of the system itself.
When I tried the new Saving to PDF feature, it worked without a hitch, and now the option for that and for OpenDocument Text format appear right in the main Save As choices in Word. In my tests, PDFs saved complete with fonts, formatting, and images.

I did run into a snag on an XP machine: I was unable to install SP2 on an XP system running Office 2007, getting the error "A failure occurred during installation." The error noted a Knowledge Base article I could look up to see what was going on, but the KB article had not yet been posted at the time of my testing. On other test systems, the updater sometimes produced a dialog stating "There are no products affected by this package installed on this system." Despite this message, the Office programs' About dialogs showed that the version was now SP2.

My guess is that because the updater consists of two executable program files, the second did not contain new updates for my setup. When the update is released on Microsoft Update and Download Center, this two-step process may not be necessary.
SP2 also includes server product updates: Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 and

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server SP2 include fixes and performance improvements. The servers also support more Web browsers, and will run on Windows Server 2008 R2 at its release. SP2 also improves Groove Server's synchronization reliability, LDAP connectivity, and "robustness."

Get iPod 240Gb

I'm a music junkie, I admit it. But honestly, I thought that I would have appeased all of my pocket music library needs when I upgraded my iPod from 20 to 80GB. It helped for a while, but every so often I find myself deleting yet another 30-minute experimental jazz track from my hard drive to make way for more new music. I have a problem.

iPod repair site, RapidRepair.com has a solution--a temporary one at least. The site today announced the addition of a 240GB iPod hard drive to its list of music player upgrades. No word on price yet, though the site's 120GB hard drive is priced at $189.99, and I'm guessing you can add at least $20 to that price.

According to RapidRepair.com, the hard drive will be available for all 5G iPods. Upgrades for the iPod Classic and Zune 2G are expected to be available at some point as well. In the meantime the site has a waiting list for the 5G models. Sorry.

AMD Deals With Qualcomm

AMD continued its previously-announced strategy of streamlining its business by agreeing to sell its handheld graphics unit to Qualcomm for about $65 million in cash.

According to the companies, the deal has already signed and closed as of Jan. 19. Under the agreement, Qualcomm will hold back an undisclosed amount for indemnification expenses, plus and make adjustments for employee-related expenses. Qualcomm has already made offers to several of AMD's handheld design teams, as part of the deal, the companies said.

The deal comes as no surprise; said in its fall analyst meeting that it was trying to sell its handheld business, as part of an overall strategy to concentrate on its core microprocessor and graphics businesses; for the graphics portion, the handheld business was not as important. Rival Nvidia also owns a handheld graphics processor, the Tegra, which the company continues to sell.

For Qualcomm, the graphics technology will be integrated into the company's other integrated cores, providing additional capabilities to Qualcomm's system-on-a-chip products.

"This acquisition of assets from AMD's handheld business brings us strong multimedia technologies, including graphics cores that we have been licensing for several years," said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, in a statement. "Bringing this technology in-house creates even greater synergy as we seamlessly integrate the best-in-class multimedia performance AMD offers into our system-on-chip (SoC) products."

Project Stocking Playlist On Facebook

Facebook is the latest social networking site to block music Web site Project Playlist. The site allows its users to compile playlists and, until recently, embed them on their profiles on social networking sites. Copyright concerns, however, have prompted these sites to pull their support.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reportedly contacted Facebook last summer about removing the Playlist application, and recently made the request again.

Facebook is working with Project Playlist but must remove the app during discussions to comply with its terms of service, according to a statement.

"Our hope and expectation is that the parties can resolve their disagreements in a manner that satisfies the developer and copyright holder, that continues to offer a great experience to music fans, and that doesn't discourage other developers from using Platform to share their creativity and test new ideas," Facebook said.

MySpace started blocking the site last weekend, according to a note on the Project Playlist Web site.

"We are working hard to get our widgets back up on user profiles across these social networking sites as quickly as possible so our users can continue to share music with their friends," Playlist CEO Jeremy Riney wrote in a blog post. "Until then, your playlists are not lost and you can still share them - they remain available here on Playlist.com, where you can continue to search for music, create and play new playlists."

The move comes two days after Playlist reached a licensing agreement with Sony BMG.

"We are going to make Sony BMG's entire catalog -- including popular artists like Beyonce, Britney Spears, Bow Wow and iCarly -- available to be part of your playlists," Riney wrote.

Cheap Quad-Core Notebook Chip

On Sunday, Intel launched the Q9000, a quad-core mobile chip that partner Acer included in a new notebook the company launched on Monday. Intel also added four new mobile dual-core chips to its portfolio, via updates to its official price list: the Core 2 Duo T9800, P9600, T9550, and P8700.

What's notable about the Q9000 is its price: $348 in 1,000-unit lots. Intel's other mobile quad-core chips all cost $851, with its top-of-the-line QX9300 chip priced at $1,038. In part, that has allowed Acer to market its new Aspire 8930G-7665 notebook at a suggested price of $1,799.99.

The 8930G-7665 allegedly contains the Q9000, although the specs Acer originally listed for the device actually correspond to the QX9300: 2.53 GHz, 12 Mbytes of level 2 cache, and a 1.066-GHz front-side bus. The Q9000 runs at 2.0-GHz, uses a shared 6 Mbyte level-2 cache, and includes a 1.066 GHz front-side bus.

An Acer representative said Monday that the original specifications were a mistake, and that the 8930G-7665 includes the Q9000, with the specifications as listed above.

Otherwise, Acer's new notebook includes an 18.4-inch WUXGA Acer CrystalBrite screen (at 1920 x 1080 resolution), 4 Gbytes of DDR3 memory, a GeForce 9700M GT/512 Mbytes graphics card, a 500-GByte hard drive, 802.11a/b/g, a 6-in-1 card reader, a Webcam, Dolby HomeTheater-class sound, and Windows Vista Premium 64-bit. The new notebook is available now.

Intel also introduced the mobile Core 2 Duo T9800 (2.93 GHz, 6 Mbytes L2 cache, $530), the P9600 (2.66 GHz, 6 Mbytes L2 cache, $348), the T9550 (2.66 GHz, 6 Mbytes L2 cache, $316) and the P8700 (2.53-GHz, 6 Mbytes L2 cache, $241). The "T" and "P" series differ in the thermal design power used; the "T" series processors are rated at 35 watts, while the "P" series is rated at 25 watts.

Most people don't want to throw money away, but T-mobile users have a knack for it! It's like a cult, recruiting more t-mobile users so that more money can be flushed! Come on guys, please tell me why you are paying 40p per minute to call all other networks and 20p per minute just to call landlines. The phone box is cheaper, you a dunce or what?
