After years of helping patients restore strength and mobility in both the NHS and private practice, physiotherapist Shannon Wilkinson embarked on an exciting new chapter by opening her own clinic in Rotherham.

With guidance and support from RIDO’s Launchpad programme Wilkinson Physiotherapy in Todwick helps people achieve their rehabilitation goals through personalised care and expert treatment.

Whether recovering from an injury, managing ongoing pain, or aiming to improve performance, the clinic offers a wide range of physiotherapy services designed to help clients move better and feel their best.

When Shannon opened Wilkinson Physiotherapy in September, she wasn’t just starting a business, she was fulfilling a long-held ambition. She said: "“I always knew setting up my own practice was the end game. Working for others never gave me the fulfilment I wanted. Now I can structure things my way, spend more time with people, and really listen to their concerns.”

Services include physiotherapy for aches, pains and musculoskeletal conditions, sports injury management, and tailored one-to-one rehabilitation. Shannon also provides pain management plans and pre- and post-operative support for a safe return to full function.

Having launched in September, Shannon’s client base is diverse, from teenagers to people in their 80s.

Available to all new, early stage and small businesses in the Rotherham area, completely free of charge, Launchpad offers one-to-one coaching and a comprehensive range of expert workshops to help give your business the best start and support to grow. Shannon has attended many of Launchpad’s expert workshops on artificial intelligence (AI) and marketing, gaining practical insights to help develop her social media marketing skills and grow her clinic. You don’t know everything about business, and even if you take one thing away from a session, it’s something new you have discovered. I’ve always learned something useful from each workshop."

News: Rotherham high streets grants scheme oversubscribed

Demand has been "incredible" for Rotherham Council's grants scheme that aims to help breathe new life into the borough's high streets.

The council is looking at extending the scheme if money can be found.

Rothbiz reported in August on the launch of the opportunity for local businesses to benefit from a makeover thanks to a £270,000 investment from the authority.

The Shop Unit Business Grant Project is funded through the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), with support from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

The grant aims to help high street businesses in the town centre, Dinnington, Maltby, Swinton and Wath-Upon-Dearne enhance their premises by funding improvements that will contribute to their overall look, feel and vibrancy.

Eligible businesses have been applying for grants of up to £25,000 to improve the look and feel of their shop units. Improvements have included new shopfronts, signage, flooring, lighting and other refurbishments that will enhance the attractiveness of local high streets.

Applications closed in October, with all projects set to be completed by the end of December 2025. Grants have been awarded on a first come, first served basis until the full allocation is spent.

Providing an update to the council, Cllr. John Williams, Cabinet Member for Transport, Jobs and the Local Economy, said: "This was a £270,000 scheme to help support our small businesses, shops and our local high streets across the borough. And I'm pleased to say that the scheme has been oversubscribed actually - the level of demand has been incredible to be fair, and I think that it has shown that there is a need and a demand for this sort of intervention and support for our small business community.

"We are actively looking now to find additional funding that will be able to support as many of the applications as possible that we have received and I am hopeful that we are going to be able to progress that over the next few weeks.

"I have given the steer to the service that the majority of the money can't just go into the town centre solely, there does need to be a fair spread across all eligible areas. It was designed from the outset to support high streets across the borough."

Rotherham-based AES Engineering Ltd has been presented with the 16th Queen’s or King’s award won by AES group companies.

The Templeborough-based mechanical seal manufacturer and reliability group serving over 100 countries, has received the King’s Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category.

Previous Queen’s Awards have been achieved by individual parts of the group have included those for exports and technological achievement but this is the first to be won by the overall holding company.

The group’s core products are manufactured in Rotherham and are used by major industries globally to prevent the leakage of liquids and gases into the environment, thereby preventing environmental damage as well as avoiding a health and safety risk.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Dame Hilary Chapman recently presented the Grant of Appointment and a trophy bearing the Emblem to managing director Chris Rea at the company’s headquarters.

She said it was the most prestigious award a business could gain and had been for 50 years, with just 199 granted across the UK last year, and 27 in the sustainable development category – AES Engineering being the only South Yorkshire recipient.

Dame Hilary said: "Sustainability isn’t built into the strategy here, it is the strategy and it is the golden thread that runs through everything AES Engineering does.

“It is highly competitive and only 20% of all those who apply are successful. This category is very important and gaining control of the climate crisis was recognised as a high priority by our previous Monarch Queen Elizabeth and our present monarch King Charles.

“You must show unquestionable commitment to sustainability and at AES that is certainly the case. This is the 16th award the company has received but it is the first time the overall holding company has won the award, which is remarkable."

To gain the award a company must demonstrate commitment to sustainable development over two years, have built sustainability into the company’s strategy and be able to show proof of positive outcomes.

Dame Hilary said all of this was evident and picked out the new tree walk at Mill Close, the commitment to spending £29m on environmental projects by 2029, achieving Net Zero every year since 2021 and launching Betterworld.Solutions as highlights.

Vice Lord-Lieutenant Jane Marshall read the award citation, and Mr Rea said the process involved in obtaining a King’s Award had always been extremely thorough and now appeared even tougher.

He said: “You don’t get this award for no reason. You must display forceful evidence of what a business has achieved over a period of time. “As a management team and a group of people we are still up for the challenge of being sustainable and being successful.”

On the announcement of the award in May, he said: “A King’s Award is the ultimate establishment to business award and a huge boost to morale and motivation, but this award is particularly special as it encourages AES Engineering Ltd to continue to invest in sustainability.”

The accolade is valid for five years and means the company can fly the King’s Award flag at Mill Close, use the emblem on stationery, advertising and products.

News: Why is The Stag pub in Rotherham closed?

The popular pub in Rotherham has been closed for most of September.

Originally called the Stags Head Inn and dating back to about 1736, the pub is in the area of the town known as Stag.

The pub held a closing party on September 5 and work has been going on since at the Wickersley Road venue.

Recently operating under the Stonegate Group, the closure is part of a move to the Craft Union chain.

Stonegate Group has been selling off pubs with Rothbiz reporting in June that the freehold of the Green Dragon was available for £400,000.

The group is the UK’s largest pub operator and its parent company, TDR Capital, had £2.6 billion of debts, even before it made a £250m shareholder contribution into the pub co last year. GMB Union had been warning that the financial sitaution at TDR could lead to Stonegate’s collapse that would put 4,400 pubs and thousands of jobs at risk.

Craft Union Pub Company is a brand and division of Stonegate Group. It is an operator led managed format offering self-employment opportunities for landlords and managers to earn 20% of net revenue with costs business rates, utilities and sports channels covered.

The format aims to create community pubs and has been a success with the Craft Union estate growing to around 650 pubs across the UK having only formed in April 2015.

In Rotherham, Craft Union pubs can be found in Rawmarsh - Earl Grey and Horse & Jockey, in Rotherham town centre - The Plough, with the Park at Clifton and The Travellers Inn at Bramley.

Social media posts show that the team from the Alma in Conisbrough, another Craft Union pub, are taking over operations at the Stag.

An opening date is set for September 26.

According to its entry on the South Yorkshire Local Heritage List, in June 1924, most of the land and the Stag Inn were sold to Mappins Brewery of Masbrough. As well as the Inn, this entailed barns, stables, cow house, cattle sheds and outbuildings and fields totalling thirty three acres.

Mappins rebuilt the Stag Inn in 1934.

At Bramley, The Travellers Inn is currently under offer.

News: Grants of up to £25,000 to help breathe new life into Rotherham high streets

Businesses on high streets across the borough have the opportunity to benefit from a makeover thanks to a £270,000 Rotherham Council investment.

As part of its commitment to breathe new life into Rotherham’s high streets and create thriving neighbourhoods, the Council has launched the Shop Unit Business Grant Project, funded through the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), with support from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

The grant aims to help high street businesses in the town centre, Dinnington, Maltby, Swinton and Wath-Upon-Dearne enhance their premises by funding improvements that will contribute to their overall look, feel and vibrancy.

Eligible businesses can apply for grants of up to £25,000 to improve the look and feel of their shop units. Improvements could include new shopfronts, signage, flooring, lighting and other refurbishments that will enhance the attractiveness of local high streets.

Businesses are being encouraged to act quickly, with grants awarded on a first come, first served basis until the full allocation is spent.

Applications are open until October 30 2025, with all projects set to be completed by the end of December 2025.

The cabinet at Rotherham Council approved plans in March for the £3.28m of UKSPF for 2025/26, a transitional year allocation.

£945,256 is for business support with £60,000 set aside for enhancing the operation of the outdoor market during the current redevelopment. Rotherham Children’s Capital of Culture is set to receive further funding with £275,000 for the extension of the successful traineeship programme. £200,000 has been allocated for marketing to support the communications and reach of the festival year.

Rothbiz reported in January on proposals put forward for Rotherham Council's latest budget which included £50,000 for free parking. One hour’s free parking has recently been introduced in council-run car parks in Rotherham town centre.

The investment across Rotherham’s high streets will be complemented by the introduction of a new ‘Street Safe Team’ focused on increasing safety in town and village centres, as well as a new team dedicated to roadside cleansing, with a focus on popular routes and key gateways.

News: More South Yorkshire businesses set for energy efficiency boost

A project that has supported businesses across the region to cut emissions, reduce costs, and boost efficiency has been expanded thanks to an additional £1.6m investment.

The Low Carbon Project provides dedicated support and a source of funding to help local businesses reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions but has previously seen a slow take up in Rotherham.

Businesses benefit from fully funded support, including on-site energy surveys and access to capital grants for improvements such as low-energy lighting, insulation, and efficient heating systems.

In the first phase, the project supported 223 businesses with £3.2m in funding. The second phase will run until March 2026 and aims to support a further 144 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster, and Rotherham.

Sheffield City Council is leading the initiative, with the support of South Yorkshire’s other local authorities who are helping to deliver this support across the entire region.

Erodatools, a second-generation precision engineering company based in Penistone, were supported by the Low Carbon Grant to install 240 solar panels on the roof of the factory it has owned for 52 years.

The new 102kwp photovoltaic system will generate more than 72,000 kwh green energy a year which will cut their annual electricity bills by an estimated £17,000 and reduce their carbon emissions by 14.07 tonnes a year.

The project is part-funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund via the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.

Last year Rotherham Council reallocated £43,032 from the Low Carbon project to a project which aims to improve business productivity and digital innovation through the provision of capital or revenue grants. A council paper confirmed that: "The Low Carbon project continues to have difficulties in committing grants, whereas the Productivity project has a strong pipeline of applications that can complete quickly."

Councillor Mohammed Mahroof, Chair of the Economic Development, Skills and Culture Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: "We know many business owners want to reduce energy costs and do their bit for the planet, but it can be difficult to plan how to do this effectively, and to find the money to pay for carbon-saving measures.

"That is where this brilliant scheme can help. Specialist advisors will help businesses identify where they can make changes that save budgets and tackle the climate crisis. Low carbon grants give businesses the financial support they need to make changes that will reduce energy costs and carbon emissions."

News: Rotherham tech startups offered support to validate innovative ideas

South Yorkshire tech startups are being offered support to validate their innovative ideas through a new incentive programme launched to boost the region’s tech startups.

The support comes from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority funded TECH SY project, which is offering either financial grants or support from a specialist consultancy to promising startups in South Yorkshire as part of the wider aim to help scale up our tech ecosystem.

The Idea Validation Grant provides up to £2,500 of direct financial support, OR up to £5,000 worth of idea validation support. This new programme aims to provide financial assistance and mentoring to help companies validate business ideas, ensuring their feasibility and potential for success, before they embark on significant product development.

Businesses will be able to use the funding for activities such as market research and prototyping. Alternatively, recipients can receive mentoring via a partnership with experienced founders from Trove Ventures, as well as access to a network of industry experts across the region.

Since its launch last year, TECH SY have been analysing data on the startup ecosystem in the region and working with industry leaders and stakeholders to develop pilot programmes that help grow the local digital economy. The programme aims to kickstart the next evolution of tech startups in South Yorkshire by empowering entrepreneurs with funding and support to validate their business concepts.

News: New Rotherham restaurant opens at Forge Island

Sygnature Dish has opened in Rotherham, bringing steak and seafood to Forge Island.

Rothbiz reported in March that an independent restaurant from local entrepreneurs would be the second food operator at the town centre's new landmark leisure destination.

Delivered by Rotherham Council in partnership with Muse, the £47m development includes an 8-screen boutique cinema operated by The Arc Cinema, a 69-roomed Travelodge Hotel.

Loungers plc, the West Country-based café/bar group, opened Vetro Lounge in April as the first food venue on Forge Island.

Sygnature Dish has taken Unit 3 - a 2,580 sq ft unit adjacent to the hotel, opposite the cinema and across from Vetro Lounge.

Dalu and Sibbs Sikhosana are the enterprising siblings behind Sygnature Dish and are well known from Sub Sahara, an authentic family-run African shop and butchery in Rotherham town centre. Sub Sahara was established in August 2023 by owners who have a combined experience of retail and hospitality industry of over 30 years.

The new website for Sygnature Dish explains: "Specialising in high-quality, expertly cooked steaks and freshly sourced seafood, Sygnature Dish will serve lunch and dinner alongside a selection of cocktails plus local and international beers. Diners will be able to indulge in the finest cuts of T-bone, sirloin and rib-eye steaks, along with beef ribs and burgers.

"There’ll be a range of seafood on the menu too, including salmon, grilled/fried calamari, mussels, prawns and the fish of the day.

Rothbiz revealed in June that Heavenly Desserts was planning to take a unit at Forge Island.

News: Positive Steps Rotherham launches new mental health venture with support from Launchpad

Positive Steps Rotherham Limited, a professional mental health service supporting adults who suffer from a range of mental health challenges, officially launched earlier this year. The service aims to provide compassionate, personalised care to those in need across Rotherham and the wider South Yorkshire region.

Founded in February 2025 by business owner Nicola Cameron, the Dinnington company was soon joined by Gemma Wheeler, who brought additional expertise and experience to meet the growing needs of their expanding client base.

Nicola’s journey into the mental health sector was shaped by deeply personal experiences. Having witnessed the impact of mental health issues within her own family, her path to founding Positive Steps began long before the business itself. In her early twenties, Nicola suffered a significant decline in physical health that left her bedbound and in constant pain, an ordeal that severely impacted her mental ill health.

In her thirties, she experienced a traumatic event that led to a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). After more than a decade of silent suffering, Nicola sought professional help and underwent trauma therapy, a pivotal moment in her recovery. Her professional journey soon followed, beginning a support worker role and steadily progressing into management experience. It was here that she discovered turning her passion for providing care, into a business that makes a real difference.

On starting her business Nicola said, “Having previously worked as a Social Carer, I saw firsthand that there was a big need within our communities, having supported family members and going through mental health difficulties myself, I could see there was an opportunity to help people who found themselves in a similar position who just needed that extra bit of support.

“What truly matters to the people we support is building a genuine relationship through getting to know them as individuals and understanding what brings them happiness. It’s about working together toward what a better life looks like for them. On discovering the business support available from Rotherham Launchpad Nicola said, “I first heard about Rotherham Launchpad through a local billboard, but it was a friend, who’d had received support from the team at RiDO themselves and really recommended I give it a go. As someone with managerial experience but completely new to setting up a business, I was looking for clear guidance on where to begin, what I’d need, and how to approach things like marketing and HR. The 1:1 support I received was fantastic the team is approachable, and they genuinely understood the needs of my business.

“My advice to anyone considering it? Absolutely go for it. The range of support they offer is invaluable, and they’re right there with you every step of the way.”

News: Film-maker works with RiDO on digital training project

Award-winning South Yorkshire documentary maker and multi media specialist Wayne Sables is working with Rotherham Investment And Development Office on a new project sharing skills to create successful high quality film and social media footage.

Wayne has been running successful courses for creatives, freelancers and small businesses wanting to add digital technology into their work for several years.

His working partnership with RiDO will specifically reach out to companies working in the Rotherham area.

“It was during lockdown that I was first asked to do some commissions based around recording on a smart phone,” Wayne says.

As a result of those lockdown sessions, he was then invited by Rotherham teacher, performer, composer and writer Malcolm J Hogan to develop a ten-week educational programme.

And it was when RiDO saw those sessions that they invited Wayne to create more training modules in a partnership that launched last year and will now run into 2026.

“Those original lockdown sessions proved enormously successful and have really led to the work I am now doing with companies linked with RiDO,” Wayne said.

“It’s all about working with start ups and companies in areas like digital exposure and developing a stronger online presence.

“That’s includes learning how to take great video footage on a smart phone which really is the most that most people will need to get their digital story started.

“The important message is that you really don’t need to be a photographer or a film maker to start creating hugely effective content - we all have the technology quite literally to hand in our phones but most smart phone users simply don’t know how effective that technology can be.

“In year two of this partnership, I’ll be working with clients one-to-one around digital development for business and, of course, using the technology you already have.

“It’s a great way telling successful business stories - and the more I work in this field, the more I recognise how so many of those stories go untold simply because people don’t realise they have the tools for sharing.”

News: Students celebrate social enterprise café success

Visitors to Ulley Country Park in Rotherham are enjoying tasty homemade treats, thanks to a pioneering social enterprise that is helping students with special educational needs and disabilities to prepare for life after college.

Launched last June, the ROC Café was developed through a unique collaboration between Ulley Country Park and Rotherham Opportunities College. Operated by students with physical and learning disabilities and/or autism under the watchful eye of experienced catering co-ordinator, Gaynor Cooper, the café operates every Tuesday and Thursday.

The ROC Café has already helped more than 40 students to develop practical life skills, with the underlying aim of helping them to live as independently as possible in adulthood, as well as securing future employment within the hospitality industry.

Working under supervision, students spend time serving customers, preparing food, as well as learning about customer service.

Many of the tasty snacks and treats sold in the ROC Café are prepared by students in college, using locally sourced meat, fruit and vegetables and bread.

To date, the café has received rave reviews from visitors to the park, as well as achieving a five-star food hygiene rating, the highest available.

News: FerretWorks - a South Yorkshire take on fostering innovation

A University of Sheffield project which aims to scale-up disruptive businesses in the region is being backed by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

The project has been given the name FerretWorks as a Yorkshire slant on SkunkWorks, the secret R&D team at Lockheed Aircraft Corp that worked quickly to develop a jet fighter for the United States during World War II.

The approach from the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) was formed to incubate high risk/high reward ideas away from the typical business KPIs and constraints, creating a space where it’s OK to fail, as well as putting money into the groups so they can make space for thinking.

SYMCA is now set to award £375k from its Project Feasibility Fund for FerretWorks.

A SYMCA paper explains: "The project will assist entrepreneurs by facilitating access to the resources required to help mature and de-risk the formation of disruptive technology businesses, laying the foundations for scale-ups of the future. The program aims to develop a culture of innovation in the SYMCA region that learns fast, fails fast, and de-risks the translation from concept to establishing an ecosystem of disruptive businesses."

The project is set to develop a pipeline of IP generation and future entrepreneurs, create high-value jobs in the region, and encourage businesses to form and base themselves in the South Yorkshire Investment Zone.

The authority is also keen that the FerretWorks sub-brand will be used in marketing and promote SYMCA as "the place to develop innovative start-up businesses."

The AMRC has grown to become a world leader in manufacturing excellence, part of the national High Value Manufacturing Catapult network of research centres. With facilities in Rotherham and Sheffield it has more than 500 highly qualified researchers and engineers working on the manufacturing needs of the future, from composites to castings, additive manufacturing to machining.

The AMRC strategy was refreshed in 2023 where FerretWorks aims to facilitate ambitious steps in manufacturing research by giving engineers the freedom, space and time to create and explore new ideas, to run adjacent to the centre's themes of sustainability, digital, future platforms and supply chain resilience.

News: Rotherham garage charges up growth plans with EV investment

A Rotherham-based garage is charging up its future growth and expansion plans by offering additional support to electric car owners.

Treeton Auto Services has become one of the first independently owned garages in Yorkshire to provide specialist maintenance and repair services for electric vehicles, a move which has been made possible through a six-figure investment in the business.

The investment, which has been self-funded by the business, has seen Treeton Auto Services relocate to new, larger premises which will double the size of its workshop space. The expansion will see the creation of two dedicated electric vehicle repair bays, eight ramps and next month the business is planning to open a new MOT testing facility.

One of the challenges facing garages working on electric vehicles is the need for additional physical space required to work on the vehicles safely. Due to the high voltages involved, additional safety precautions are required, especially when diagnosing and repairing faulty batteries, which means repair bays for electric vehicles are much larger than those used to maintain their petrol and diesel counterparts.

The move will create four new jobs in the business, and the independently-owned garage has also secured help from the skills bank. Delivered by SYMCA, the match-funded grant has been used to train the company’s workforce of experienced mechanics and vehicle technicians to develop their knowledge and expertise, particularly in relation to the charging and drivetrain systems – key components in powering electric vehicles.

In recent years, Treeton Auto Services has found its vehicle repair services to be in high demand. When larger premises became available in Canklow Meadows Industrial Estate, business founder Dave Geldard recognised that the site didn’t just provide a chance to expand and grow the business, but diversify the services offered.

With new petrol and diesel cars set to be banned in 2030, Dave recognised that the current high demand for his services could be short-lived if the business did not respond to meet changing driver needs. Today, electric vehicles account for one in five vehicles on the road, and with many owners looking beyond dealerships to maintain their cars, Dave realised that few independent garages were responding to the changing marketplace.

Although the company has no intention of stopping its support for petrol and diesel car owners any time soon, Dave believes that investing in EV technology will give the business a golden opportunity to build and grow the company further, as well as creating new opportunities for the mechanics of tomorrow.

Taking this step now will help us to futureproof the business. At present, there are very few options for electric car owners when it comes to repairing and maintaining their vehicles beyond the main dealerships and I predict that demand for electric vehicle repairs and maintenance is likely to be an area that will see significant growth in the years to come.”

Dave Geldard founded Treeton Auto Services in 2008, following a successful career in the motor industry. Having originally trained as an apprentice with TVR, he became a Peugeot master technician, before moving to work in roadside recovery. Despite successful stints with both the AA and RAC, he became increasingly disillusioned with the quality of service and repair work undertaken by garages across the UK.

Having started the business from scratch, under Dave’s leadership, Treeton Auto Services has enjoyed a significant period of growth and expansion. Entrepreneur Me is bringing the entrepreneurial spirit to children across South Yorkshire, backed by positive psychologist Lisa Avery and UKSE.

Founded by Matt Stewart, Entrepreneur Me has been inspiring children across the world for over 20 years, with its latest cohort of schools in Barnsley, Sheffield and Rotherham.

The project, “Enterprise in the Business,” spans eight weeks, dedicating one day to inspire students, teachers, and parents on how to pair entrepreneurship with community values.

During these sessions, students receive £25 to create products and tackle various challenges, with profit champions announced at the end of the day.

For the remaining weeks, students implement their own business plans, using real money to make a profit. Any money made from the project is to be given away to the community cause of their choice.

Having collaborated with UKSE for over a decade, Matt applied for a kickstart grant from UKSE – a local investment company that provides up to £1.5 million to growing businesses – which helped fund the full day programme in school.

Lisa Avery, an expert in positive psychology and coaching psychology, recently joined the Entrepreneur Me team, enhancing the program with her expertise.

A group of 22 senior leaders from 21 local small and medium-sized businesses are the latest to take part in the government-funded Help to Grow: Management programme at Sheffield Hallam University.

The 12-week course is designed for local business owners and senior leaders who are keen to grow their organisation. It is accredited by the Small Business Charter and 90% subsidised by the government.

The University’s Sheffield Business School has supported the delivery of the course to 180 participants since it launched in September 2021.

Something new is being added to the menu in Rotherham. Chef’s Counter, a pioneering local hospitality events company, has announced the grand opening of its first permanent site, and it is set to be in Rotherham town centre.

Not just about culinary excellence, the Sheffield-based social enterprise is dedicated to providing supported employment to individuals interested in pursuing careers in hospitality. With Chris Hanson, who spent seven years at Blend Kitchen, it has been running food events across a variety of underused spaces.

A permanent site is set to open next month inside a former hairdressers in the Imperial Buildings in Rotherham town centre.

Chef’s Counter has a proven track record of success, having hosted numerous sold-out public dining events in unique venues around Sheffield since its inception in 2023. From American diner food at the Millenium Gallery to a pie and pea super at Samuel Worth Chapel. The bespoke corporate hospitality service, “Business Bites,” has also garnered attention and bookings from across South and West Yorkshire.

Chris Hanson, founder and chef at Chef’s Counter, said: “Since our inception, Chef’s Counter has been about more than just food. It’s about community, inclusivity, and providing opportunities for those facing barriers to employment. The Victorian, Grade II listed, Imperial Building, was restored by developer, Illiad as part of the Rotherham Renaissance initiative in 2008 creating nearly 9,000 sq ft of retail space and 19 residential apartments around an Edwardian-era arcade with gallery space in the centre.

In preparation for the opening of a permanent site, Chef’s Counter has launched a crowd funder appeal to raise money for the launch.

The Crowdfunder page reads: "Since our first invite only event in June 2023 and our latest sold out Saturday Night Dinner event in February 2024, Chef's Counter have cooked for over 2,000 people, won the collaboration excellence category at Sheffield Business Awards, had a mention from Jay Rayner in the Guardian, generated thousands of pounds additional revenue for local charities and community groups, created supported employment for 8 people overcoming barriers to enter the workplace (ranging from overcoming substance misuse, homelessness to living with long term mental and physical health conditions) and finally cooked alot of delicious food!

"We now need some help. So far hiring spaces on an ad hoc basis from local charities and community groups has been fine in terms of meeting the demand for our services. The reality now is we're getting busier and busier with more people booking onto our expanded public events programme and companies taking up our delicious business bites offering. News: Rotherham family karate club gets kickstart from UKSE

Family and volunteer-run Rotherham Shukokai Karate has its sights set on the WUKF World Championships in Switzerland, with the help of founder and WUKF 2023 World double silver medallist Lynette Whitehouse.

Established in December 2020, the club was founded by Lynette and Sam Whitehouse, Lynette had trained in Shotokan Karate as a child and through her teenage years where she gained her 1st Dan.

Lynette and Sam met in the army, and upon settling back in Rotherham, Lynette wanted to get their children into Karate to help with their confidence along with other values that come with karate, like self-defence, respect, self-discipline, fitness, mental health and making friends to name a few.

Lynette later joined the army reserves and trialled for the army karate team, where she succeeded in gaining six years of competing and training with them at an International and World level.

Earlier this year, the pair applied for a Kickstart grant from UKSE – a local investment company that provides finance of up to £1.5 million to growing businesses and supports start-up ventures – which was used to purchase Tatami (mats) , which are used in competitions to prepare students who wish to compete.

Commenting on their journey so far, Lynette said: “We are so grateful for the support from our parents along with UKSE to enable us to reach our goals.

“Our intentions are to train and prepare our students who wish to compete for the WUKF World Championships in Switzerland in 2025 by getting on the competition circuit a lot more.

Micro and start-up businesses will benefit from high-quality serviced spaces following the official opening of Century 2 Business Park at Manvers.

Rotherham Council has invested £5.4m in its 5th business hub, creating 20 new workshops, 16 offices and two laboratories. The neighbouring Century Business Park has supported over 400 businesses since it was set up 22 years ago.

Century 2 will feature a central reception and lettable conference facilities for large meetings and functions. Externally, the site will include car parking, cycle storage and electric car charging points.

A fabric first approach has been taken towards creating a more sustainable building and renewable heating will be incorporated within the office spaces via air source heat pumps.

Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott said: “Our investment will create more better paid jobs and increase spending in the local economy as a result.”

“We’re building on the existing success story at Manvers by creating a new vibrant workspace where more entrepreneurs and small businesses can get the support they need to grow. These are exciting times for small businesses who can tap into the specialist expertise offered by Rotherham Council.”

The site is located just off the A6195, with links to M1 and A1. It will be managed by the Council’s Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO), which manages similar facilities across the borough.

Sarah Rimmington, a Director at independent travel agency SANS Travel and her three colleagues moved from working at their homes to the Century 2 business hub last month.

The Earl Grey, in Rawmarsh, Rotherham, has opened its doors once again to the public after being purchased by a group of friends looking to make a better pub for the local community by offering live music and events.

After opening its doors once again in June 2023, The Earl Grey has already seen success with its function room, as well as its traditional pub.

The landmark building had always been of interest to Matthew Fletcher, who had previously worked in the pub trade. Already possessing an alcohol licence, he felt it was a natural next step to manage his own premises, with the support of friends within the community.

The Earl Grey now offers a range of events and live music, aiming to be a pub geared towards the local community, as well as visitors from further afield who are looking to enjoy a night out.

Matthew has made various additions, including introducing a new Atlantic beer, along with Spanish beer, Cruzcamp. He also plans to offer real ale, which will change regularly, and bring in food, to be developed over the coming weeks.

Further developments include hosting a pool team, along with various other community events.

Matthew applied for a Kickstart grant from UKSE – a local investment company that provides finance of up to £1.5 million to growing businesses and supports start-up ventures - which helped with advertising costs for events.

News: Baby business reopens in Rotherham following fire

A much-loved Rotherham play space that was wrecked in an arson attack has reopened to families.

Bright Stars Play Space first opened at Parkgate in 2021 when two local teachers created a sanctuary for new parents and their children by offering yoga classes, baby massage, sensory sessions and a much-needed place to relax.

But at the end of May, co-owners Caroline and Molly, along with the families who use the space, were heartbroken following a fire in an adjacent unit that left toys, playmats and sensory items covered in a layer of soot.

Five months on and Bright Stars is now brighter than ever following a full refurbishment.

At Unit B8 Taylors Court, the revamped former office now has an updated comfy area downstairs that is perfect for parents to enjoy coffee and cake, and for little ones to play. The space is warm and inviting, much quieter than a large soft play centre, and more child-friendly than a standard café.

Upstairs provides the space for fun and educational sessions including: baby yoga; baby massage; learning through fun and games; rhythm, rhyme and storytime; family sensory; and “Welcome to the World” - a set of sessions designed especially for newborns and new mums and dads.

Molly Doran, co-founder of Bright Stars Play Space, said: “It feels great to open bookings for our classes, invite everyone down and to welcome people back. It is a busy time for us with sessions running, the play space downstairs open throughout the day and themed parties from Halloween up to Christmas.”

News: Rotherham community hub seeks helping hands

An enterprising Rotherham mum is using her entrepreneurial skills honed as a personal fitness trainer and aerobics instructor to help strengthen a healthy sense of community.

Last year, Jodie Goodall “swooped in” to take over the lease of a long vacant community centre in the Brecks area of Rotherham and bring it back to life as a hub of activity – hosting everything from her own fitness classes to indoor bowls, craft clubs and charity events.

But now the hub on Brecks Crescent needs help if it is to continue to be a base for the local community.

Jodie, a director of the JRG Fitness and The Brecks Community Hub CIC, explained: “I used to hire the space for fitness classes and then the long-term tenant called time on their stewardship of the community centre and as a result of the pandemic the centre remained out of action for a few years.

“I’d always dreamed of owning my own gym and fitness centre so I swooped in and took on the lease of the building. Since then I have worked hard to bring the hub back to life and a centre for the community.

“Now we need extra pairs of hands to keep building on what we have.”

Other uses include baby and toddler sessions, classes for yoga, pilates and karate, and a diabetes support group. It operates as a community interest company – a not-for-profit organisation with the money generated ploughed back into the Brecks Community Hub.

JRG Fitness and Jodie’s Aerobics started eight years ago when Jodie trained in providing group exercise following the birth of her child. It also meant learning about how to start and run a business, in this case, a social enterprise.

The Social Enterprise Exchange has provided support around structuring the business and help with finding funding. The ERDF-funded programme promotes social entrepreneurship and provides support for start-up and established social enterprises through grants, mentoring and specialist advice.

Jodie said: “It’s always been in my nature to help others, whether that’s through helping people with fitness or training, or in previous work helping refugees with their English.

“With the classes and the hub I like the fact that I’m bringing people in, bringing people together, using the space. The more people that use it, you feed off that buzz.”

Whilst rewarding, Jodie is conscious of the effect that taking on the management of a community centre alongside running her own business has had on her own health. She is looking for more volunteers to help keep the space open and available for the local community.

“Even if it is just opening up, making teas and coffees, a bit of cleaning or playing games,“ Jodie said.

“I don’t want to give the lease back but I have to think about me and burning out.

“A volunteer caretaker would be bloody amazing.”

Volunteers’ Week recently took place at the start of June. This year, as well as thanking people who already volunteer, the focus was on inspiring more people to take up volunteering.

As well as helping others, volunteering can help improve volunteers’ wellbeing too. It can help with learning new skills, gaining experience and boosting confidence.

The Brecks community will be on hand to support new volunteers. Recent activity has seen a large overgrown area of the site cleared by a group of volunteers from Voluntary Action Rotherham – the idea is to create an area for a community of growers and gardeners. A skilled woodworker also volunteered their time to make a new bench for outside the centre.

Jodie concluded: “People really like the space and I always hear comments about how good it is to see it back open. We just need people to keep using it, and more groups to use it. And that means we need more volunteers.”

News: Rotherham entrepreneurs secure grant for production company

Two Rotherham entrepreneurs have turned their passion for producing, writing and acting into a successful celebrity backed production company – with passion project ‘Simply Ken’ already being pitched to top TV channels.

Gratso Productions was founded by Craig Shepherd, a Rotherham College drama teacher and local actor who has featured in When Saturday Comes amongst other titles, alongside his childhood friend, Robert Sadler.

Launched in 2023, Gratso Productions secured a kickstart grant from UKSE to allow for the editing and pitching of the pilot episode of its first production, ‘Simply Ken’ a modern sitcom about successful businessman Ken Codd who suddenly loses his job, house and wife all on the same day, to programme directors at some of the country’s leading broadcasters.

The duo have also received invaluable support from Acting legends Hi-de-Hi’s Jeffrey Holland and General Hospital’s Judy Buxton, who both star in Simply Ken.

Moving forward, the company already has plans for the production of a one-man touring play, Laurel & Hardy inspired ’The Fiddle and The Bow’.

Speaking on the successful start to the business, Robert said: “We are incredibly grateful for the support and advice we have received right out the gate for Gratso Productions.

“Our main goal is to cultivate local talent out of South Yorkshire, with Craig also teaching drama at Rotherham College, we have been able to offer some amazing experience for the students.

“We are incredibly grateful for the grant from UKSE which has allowed us to speed along the process of our very first production.”

News: Century II Business Centre in Rotherham nears completion

Building works on Rotherham Council’s £5.4m scheme, Century II Business Centre, are heading towards completion.

The new business centre based in Manvers will be Rotherham’s fifth dedicated business hub to support and grow start-up and small businesses in the borough.

Local MP for Wentworth and Dearne, John Healey MP, and Rotherham Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Sarah Allen, had the opportunity to have a look round the new centre as the project nears the final construction phase.

Century II Business Centre will offer a range of spaces for local businesses, including 20 workshops, 16 office units, and two 512 sq ft lab spaces, giving businesses flexible and modern spaces to grow.

It is due to open to its first occupants in late Spring 2023, with businesses being welcomed to attend an open day after work is completed.

John Healey MP said: “Building work is really coming on and it will be great to see local businesses moving into the centre later in April.

“It’s on the back of the success of the original Century Business Centre, which opened over 20 years ago, that this investment is being made and it’s clear to see Rotherham Council is committed to supporting start-up and small businesses across the borough.”

Esh Construction is the appointed contractor on site building the centre. Esh’s Operations Manager, Andrew Schofield, said: “It was a pleasure to be part of this visit and showcase progress made on the scheme so far. As part of the development, we made a commitment to maximising social and economic value within the local community. To date we have delivered careers and employability workshops for young people in nearby schools and colleges, arranged site visits for college students, and facilitated apprentice training on site.”

Rotherham Council’s Cllr Sarah Allen said: “This £5.4m business centre is just one of the major investments that the council is making to help create jobs and improve our borough. Spaces such as the workshops, office units and lab spaces at Century II Business Centre offer local businesses an incredible opportunity to grow in their chosen industry. It is fantastic to see spaces like these for businesses across the Rotherham borough, creating vibrant business districts with great connectivity and travel links with nearby Barnsley, Doncaster and the wider region. Developments like this highlight and solidify the Council’s pledge to expand Rotherham’s economic opportunities, and I am excited to see what fantastic businesses bloom in years to come.”
