WHAT : The Southeast Museum of Photography's latest exhibit tracks the rapid evolution of the world's most inspiring cities, but the two artists behind the lens have an inspiring story all their own. Eugene Atget's intimate documents of Paris endeared him to Bohemian trailblazers like Man Ray in the 1920s, but he may have gone unknown to the larger art world had it not been for a fledgling American photographer named Berenice Abbott. Meeting Atget in his waning years, Abbott was nonetheless exhilarated by his work, and she managed to make him sit for one final, rare portrait before his death. She later returned to her home in New York with a new eye for her own city's character and helped to draw attention to Atget's career with the fame her photographs brought.
