A peak audience of 14.1 million, a 53% percent share of TV viewers, watched Saturday night's performances, ITV said.

The show, which was broadcast from 8pm to 9.30pm, averaged 11.9 million, a 45% share.

Viewers who tuned in saw twins John and Edward Grimes being praised for the way they dealt with a stage invasion as they sang and rapped a version of Under Pressure, mixed with Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby, a song which samples the Queen song's bassline.

Musician Calvin Harris, who claims to be a fan of Jedward, was removed from the studio by security guards, a spokesman for X Factor said.

The 11 stars found out who they would be living with when they enjoyed fruit cocktails and canapes on a luxury yacht - but they were soon facing their first dilemma.

The group was asked to choose one man and one woman to jump into the sea and swim to a nearby island where they would spend the night and face the first challenge.

Undecided, they drew straws and the losers were former topless model Sam Fox and chef Gino D'Acampo, who jumped into the water while the other celebrities headed back to their hotels for one last night of luxury.

Meanwhile, Fox and D'Acampo spent the night on camp beds, although Fox, who enjoyed a short pop career, entertained the television chef with a performance of her hit Touch Me (I Want Your Body).

The next morning the pair tested their nerve against crabs, an octopus, water spiders and eels to win food and beds for the celebrity camp.

The nine remaining celebrities found themselves split into teams as they made their way to the camp which will be their home for the next three weeks.

Snooker player Jimmy White, dancer Camilla Dallerup, former Hollyoaks actor Stuart Manning and interior designer Justin Ryan were given horses and told to get trekking.

Ryan's TV partner Colin McAllister, actress Lucy Benjamin and former Mis-teeq singer Sabrina Washington were taken up in a plane but were then told they had to jump out at 12,000ft.

The final two celebrities, actor George Hamilton and How Clean Is Your House? presenter Kim Woodburn, were told to make their way to camp on foot.

The musician joined the twins on stage, brandishing a pineapple on his head and bending over to point at his rear end.

The twins kept going despite the unexpected interruption, prompting their mentor Louis Walsh to later say: "When the idiot jumped up from the audience it didn't even faze you guys."

Presenter Nick Grimshaw was drafted in at the last minute to replace Calvin on the panel on ITV2's The Xtra Factor, after the singer was told to leave.

Holly Willoughby said: "He used to get all the girls. Now he just gets kicked out. He's been shown the back door quite promptly."

Interviewed afterwards, John and Edward said they had initially thought Calvin's stunt was "part of the show".

When Holly said the pineapple was supposed to be an imitation of their hairstyle, they said: "At least he did a good job."

Journalist Grace Dent, who sat next to the Acceptable In The 80s star during the show, said of his stunt: "I'm not condoning it, but it was really funny."

A spokesperson for The X Factor said: "Calvin Harris (a guest on tonight's The Xtra Factor) ran onto the stage during John And Edward's performance. This resulted in him being escorted from the studio by security and ejected from The Xtra Factor as a planned guest. Apparently Calvin is a huge John And Edward fan but it's unacceptable to storm the stage whilst an act is performing."

Calvin later tweeted: "At the end of the day, I had a pineapple on my head. Sorry if I caused anyone embarrassment. Ps. I love Jedward."

The former England cricketer and partner Katya Virshilas lost the dance-off at the end of an eventful show which included two injuries and a surprise co-host.

Comedian Ronnie Corbett stepped into Bruce Forsyth's shoes after flu floored the veteran host, forcing him to miss his first episode in seven series of the show.

Athlete Jade Johnson was also missing from the show after suffering a knee injury which she fears may affect her long jump training next year, and actress Laila Rouass cut short her rumba after an ankle injury left her in agony.

After Forsyth, 81, said he would miss the show to recover at his home in Virginia Water, Surrey, the BBC said co-host Tess Daly would front Strictly alone.

Viewers were promised a "surprise" and all was revealed when Corbett trotted down the stairs, nearly tripping in his excitement.

Corbett copied Forsyth's catchphrase "Nice to see you, to see you nice".

Tufnell found himself in the dance-off against EastEnders actor Ricky Groves and lost out in a close judges' vote which saw head judge Len Goodman with the casting vote.

"I have enjoyed myself immensely," Tufnell said after hearing the bad news.

There was also bad news for Johnson when doctors advised her to pull out of performing after her knee "popped" when she tried to get up after dancing during the dress rehearsal, and said she is "panicking a bit" about the long-term implications of the injury.

As X-Factor runners-up JLS took to the stage in Birmingham city centre, a metal barrier penning the crowd in collapsed, leaving 60 people needing treatment, said West Midlands Ambulance Service.

The planned concert and lights switch-on were cancelled as paramedics set up a special unit to treat the wounded.

According to reports, thousands more than the 5,000 fans expected at Saturday's event turned up.

JLS were due to perform alongside the Sugababes but the event was hastily cancelled.

One woman in her 30s suffered serious crush injuries to her pelvis, shoulder and leg. Another woman broke her ankle in the surge, which happened at Millennium Point on Jennens Lane at about 1.30pm.

A teenage boy fractured his wrist, while a girl in her teens suffered crush injuries to her back and legs.

A ambulance service spokeswoman said: "The remaining 56 patients suffered minor crush injuries and a range of minor medical complaints. They did not require further hospital treatment and were all discharged by ambulance crews at the scene."

It comes just hours after the singer shared a stage with his former bandmates for the first time since he left the group in 1995.

After weeks of hinting he may work with the quartet again, Robbie has now claimed the studio reunion has already begun.

During an interview to be broadcast later this year by BBC Radio 2, Robbie praised Take That songwriter Gary Barlow and confessed he had recorded with the band.

Speaking about a Take That reunion, he said: "We'd have to have written some incredibly great songs together for me to be very, very excited about the project."

He then added: "I might be 'very, very excited' about a project that's currently happening."

In the programme, to be broadcast on Christmas Day, Rob initially claimed that any studio work would be some time in the future, before making his admission.

He said: "Gaz is an amazing, amazing singer-songwriter, I'm honoured to be in the same studio as him ... erm ...when we do, in the future."

Challenged that he was lying and had already been in the studio, he admitted: "Oh s*d it, we've been in and the songs are absolutely amazing."

However fans should not necessarily hold their breath. It is unclear whether he is planning any sort of long-term partnership or whether the recordings will be officially released.

The Take That singer - whose dad Colin died one month ago, aged 71 - performed at the Children In Need concert at London's Royal Albert Hall, which he had organised, and dedicated his performance of Rule The World to his father.

Speaking to the 4,500-strong crowd, he said: "This song is dedicated to everybody who's lost somebody they love - Dad, this one's for you."

Gary added after the concert that he had been emotional because it was the type of night his father would have attended.

"He'd have been here tonight. It's one of those occasions and it was sad. I would have loved to have him here tonight," he said.

Gary had missed the launch of the show because it was immediately after his bereavement, but he said he was relieved he had finished all the concert's planning before the tragedy so he could spend the month with his mum.

The star also revealed it was because of this concert that bandmate Mark Owen, who got married on Sunday, was not on honeymoon.

"We put it in, and of course Mark never tells his wife what's going on... I'm sure he'll make up for it," he said.

At a DVD signing session for hundreds of fans in central London, the comedian said it was not a permanent move.

His girlfriend, singer Katy Perry, currently lives in Los Angeles and the pair were reportedly looking for a home in Hollywood.

Beckham said the visit had shown her the need for all children to have an equal start in life and helped her son learn about the responsibilities of his generation.

The mother of three and Brooklyn took part in a number of programmes last week, including teaching football, reading to toddlers and providing literacy and nutrition tools to parents on home visits.

At Manchester Elementary School, in Manchester, Kentucky, they participated in an after-school programme involving reading and healthy snacks and handed out Adidas shoes and backpacks.

And during a visit to Big Creek Elementary School, in Oneida, the pair took part in a book bag exchange, where toddlers were given bags filled with books, and read one of their favourite stories, Duck In The Truck.

Beckham also met school principals and teachers to try to understand the challenges they face and the support provided by Save the Children's programmes.

Clay County, in the south-east of Kentucky, is one of the poorest counties in America, with a childhood poverty rate of 47.8% and an average household income of 19,728 dollars (around £12,000).

Beckham said: "What I saw in Clay County was the hope and promise inherent in every child. That's why we have to make sure every single child has a fair and equal start in life.

"Seeing Save the Children's innovative programmes in action, I know that we can begin to reverse the childhood poverty crisis."
