So, we have this poor farmer who isn’t having a good day, and then he stumbles upon Clara (Emily Bennett). We quickly find that Clara isn’t the good girl he might think she is, and our poor farmer’s day well, ends up even worse. Damn sun tea.

Enter Brighton (David Call).

He makes horror films and is trying to finish his screenplay. It’s a lot of pressure, with being a big-shot, horror filmmaker and all. He has no inspiration to write, and he’s also angry at his life a bit. What to do? Head up to some isolation to try to wrap things up.

But the initial isolation isn’t good enough, and a wonderful bartender sends him to even more isolation.

Then wouldn’t you know it, he finds Clara.

Yea, Brighton’s fictitious horror world is about to become real life, especially with a simple line from Clara, “What kind of monster would I be if I did that?” and well, some sun tea.

As it turns out, Clara is this, hmm, overly spiritual woman who is part of this sadistic cult and kidnaps Brighton. Why? In Clara’s wackadoo world, she believes, with the guidance of videotapes of the Leader (Larry Fessenden), that she can save Brighton, maybe even turn him into a God.

Ahh, we have Clara trying to mess with the mind of Brighton, but at the same time we have Brighton trying to get into the mind of Clara.

Who will win?

Then things get really dark as we see Clara’s past come back to haunt her, and Brighton learn that, well, if one person in the town is in a cult, there will probably be others.

Finally, in a touching scene, and I mean “touching” scene with Clara and Brighton, the explanation of “light” comes, and when the word “deeper” is said, some really messed up, sadistic stuff comes about, including an ending that I didn’t see coming. Thinking back, the ending shouldn’t have been a surprise, but alas, I was still thinking about “deeper.”

“Blood Shine” is a twisted tale that might make you think a little bit of the movie “Psycho,” but oh, no, while you have a writer and a sadistic woman, this movie takes those two things to the next level. Emily Bennett is wonderful as the sweet, gentle woman gone wrong, always ready with a glass of sun tea, and David Call takes the asshole screenwriter to a level even I didn’t think be achieved.

The movie didn’t have too many surprises, but does a great job of putting you through the paces of a sadistic, religious cult. You will flinch, there is a little shock towards the end, and all I know is that when I get writer’s block, I’ll think twice about trying to find some isolated spot in the woods to get inspiration. And I definitely won’t be drinking any sun tea.

It’s 4 stars out of 5 for “Blood Shine.” In the horror, suspense, gross-you-out realm, it does a great job!

That’s it for this one! I’m Andy! L8R!!

To the Review….

Here’s a question for you: What is the one thing you wouldn’t expect to see at an Air Supply concert if you have never seen the likes of Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell, and their band, playing the songs you know and love?

Answer: A kick-ass drum solo, that’s what!

But I digress, let’s start how this came together.

I’m talking to a friend of mine, and on their music speaker I hear some Air Supply.

“Is that Air Supply?” I comment.

She mentions her love for Air Supply, and another friend who is nearby joins the conversation. Suddenly we are all about Air Supply when a revelation comes out, “You know, they are playing a free show in my town?”

Air Supply

And so it began, the checking of the calendars, the making sure we were all free, and a trip to Elk Grove Village, Illinois was set.

Air Supply is on the road for their “A Matter of Time” tour, in support of their new album by the same name, as well as celebrating fifty-plus years together. I’ll tell you what, if you have any remembrance of any of their classics, the likes of “Even the Nights are Better,” “The One That You Love,” or “All Out of Love,” head to their website, and try to catch them on the road.

Just hope they aren’t playing a festival kind of place, and you end up getting there a little later than planned.

The date arrived, but first some sustenance was needed, so off to a local restaurant we went. There should have been plenty of time, but while the food was excellent, service was a tad slow. Alas, our planned early arrival at Village Green in Elk Grove, Illinois was delayed just a tad too long. The power of Air Supply was in place, and the place was packed.

This was my first visit to Village Green, and it’s kind of an interesting venue with a stage at the end of a long, rectangular parking lot. Along the sides of the parking lot were some grassy parkways and trees. It was “Bring your own chair” seating at its best. My best guess was the area holds about 5,000 people, but what do I know?

My photo pass was secured, but the best seating the group could procure was about two-thirds of the way towards the back of the parking lot. Our fault for underestimating the love of Air Supply and just being later than we planned.

While our lawn chairs were way at the back, as a photographer, for three songs, I have the best location, right in front of the stage. I left my friends and took my spot next to a wonderful lady, whose name I sadly forgot, but I explained my intrusion was temporary. She was content with my photo assignment, and we had some nice chit-chatting about her love for Air Supply and that Mirko Tessandori, the keyboard dude in the band, was her man. I was also grateful for her because she completely had my back. You see, there was a woman a few rows back who was bemoaning that I was standing in her way. My protector shot back at her that I would only be there for a few songs, and she should pipe down. I wish I knew her name because I might have to hire her as my private, photographer security.

Mirko Tessandori

Showtime arrives, and the band makes their way to the stage, where, lo and behold, Mirko sees my “security” lady and gives her a big smile as she waves at him. Out comes Russell Hitchcock in a black suit adorned with colorful birds, and Graham Russell in a jacket that I’m jealous of.

As “Sweet Dreams” began, it was time for the smooth sounds I remembered as a youngster, finally seeing a band whose songs I have been singing for some forty-plus years.

While yes, they are out supporting a new album and single, don’t fret, the show is not a “What song is this?” show. Nope, this is a trip through everything you know and love. And then some.

As the show rolled, the likes of “Even the Nights Are Better,” “Every Woman in the World,” and “Two Less Lonely People in the World” had everyone singing along.

A “Levitating” Graham Russell

But about halfway through the show was where our late arrival truly became a difficulty.

It was time for the part of the show called “G’s Spot.” Get your head out of the gutter, it’s a nice interlude where Graham Russell gets a little spotlight, doing some crowd banter, reading inspired words, and playing around on guitar. In a normal venue I’m sure it works well, but for an outside venue where they don’t have supporting speakers in the back, and it is in the direct line of an O’Hare Airport landing path, all of the intimacy was lost in the struggling to hear him as planes flew overhead and the evening katydids overpowered the speakers.

I guess that’s a reason I’ll need to try and see them again!

In any case, the working of the G-Spot finished up, and the hits continued. Then came the unexpected, sandwiched between the lovey-doveyness of “Lost in Love” and “Making Love Out of Nothing At All,” and I’m talking about a rocking, cello duo spotlighting Jessika Soli and Kat Findlay, complete with bows that looked like lightsabers flying across the strings. And then, there it was, yes, a drum solo with Pavel Valdman showing that an Air Supply show isn’t just about snuggling with your partner.

As the show wrapped up, the encore of the Badfinger song that most remember by Harry Nilsson, “Without You,” and yes, recorded by Air Supply on the album “The Earth Is…,” had the crowd excited, and the closer, “All Out of Love,” gave everyone one last chance to sing along to a band most of them grew up with.

The boys sounded great, the band was more than solid, and I have to admit that I did not realize the guitar talent that is Graham Russell, especially as I discovered he plays a right-handed guitar, strung upside down, as Graham is left-handed. Very cool!

If you are catching Air Supply at a free, outdoor festival, hope that it isn’t in a flight-path, and don’t underestimate the draw of Air Supply by thinking you can show up late. If you do, just sit back, snuggle with your honey, and sing about love. That’s what Air Supply is about, and that’s what you’ll get at their show.

It’s two “lovey-dovey” thumbs up with a surprise drum solo and some wicked cellos. Catch them while you can!

That’s it for this one! I’m Andy!! L8R!!!

It’s Australia, it’s 2019, and fires are really messing up lives.

But it wasn’t just the fires messing up the lives of mom, Maria (Mavournee Hazel) and young Dai (Diesel La Torraca). Nope, dad, Jason (Josh McConville) is an asshole, and mom is just trying to protect her son.

What to do? Mom and Dai flee the fires, but really, they are fleeing dad, and Maria works to set up a new life for them. The problem? Jason is on the hunt, and nothing is going to stop him.

The movie is “Cruel Hands,” from Director Al Kalyk, and while the story is fairly simple, violent husband/dad is on the hunt for mom and son, Al does a wonderful job of building the suspense through to the ending.

“Cruel Hands” starts with Maria and Dai finding a new place to live, and life is kind of boring. There is the proverbial trying to figure food and living conditions, because, well, they have nothing, but a mom can be resilient. The other challenges are that Dai is missing having a home, and Maria is doing her best to make sure they lay low and don’t bring any attention to themselves.

The movie jumps between present day, with Maria and Dai hiding out, and multiple flashbacks showing just how much an asshole Jason really is. Yup, booze and brutality are parts of Jason’s life.

With the brushfires raging, and people being evacuated, Jason doesn’t care. He is relentless, tracking down anyone who might have any idea where Maria and Dai might be, and the evil in him truly begins to show.

Back in hiding, though, Dai is a kid and just wants to be a kid. The thing is, he doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation, sneaking out of the house and bringing some unwanted attention to the pair.

While things are kind of calm for Maria and Dai, it’s pretty obvious things will start to go horribly wrong. There might be a gun being shot when it probably shouldn’t have been, and you will just wonder when dad is going to catch up with them.

And with that, suspense time truly comes to “Cruel Hands.”

You get some cops, you get a body, you get badness, and yup, all hell, and fire, break loose.

“Cruel Hands” does a decent job of keeping you on the edge of your seat, especially towards the end, but there are some scenes that will have you go “come on,” like the line, “It’s the police, we have the forest surrounded.”

You will, however, see how assholes really know how to be manipulative when Jason calls for Dai with the line, “Did you ever see me hurt your mother?”

For the most part I enjoyed “Cruel Hands,” even with ending that leads you where you expect. It’s a was solid movie in the suspense realm. The only problem I had was an unanswered “What about the body?” question. That part of the story seemed a little out there, but get past it and enjoy the rest of “Cruel Hands.”

It’s 3 ½ stars out of 5 from me for “Cruel Hands.” Grab your snacks and hunker down knowing that in the end Maria knows what to do.

That’s it for this one! I’m Andy!! L8R!!!

“What? Bruce is doing a small tour of indoor venues? Really? Just him? With the band? Is he coming to Chicago?”

Those were just a few of the initial questions when I saw a blip about Bruce Springsteen doing a brief, spring tour.

I found the answers: Yes. Yes. Nope. Yup. Yup.

Then I thought to myself, “Self, maybe I can finally take my wife to a Bruce show, how Bruce is meant to be seen. Not at a baseball stadium with iffy acoustics, but indoors, with about twenty thousand crazed fans, and iffy acoustics.

So, I did my research, saw the places he was playing, and read:

APR 26 AUSTIN, TX
On Sale February 21, 2026
APR 29 CHICAGO, IL
On Sale February 20, 2026
MAY 02 ATLANTA, GA

I decided to read the listing as Chicago would go on sale on Saturday, February 21st.

“Sweet! Maybe I’ll see how much tickets might be the morning tickets go on sale.”

February 21st comes along, I wake up, start to investigate tickets, and see Chicago was already on sale.

“What? How can this be? Was there some kind of pre-sale?”

Nope, The Dude on the Right just can’t read. Chicago went on sale February 20t. it turns out Austin was going on sale on February 21st.

I felt stupid.

“Honey, I was thinking of maybe us going to Springsteen, but I’m an idiot. Tickets went on sale yesterday. Here, look at this website, see how I screwed up!”

My wife simply asked two questions, “Why didn’t you tell me you wanted to see Bruce?” (she would have gotten the correct on-sale date), and “Where else is he playing?”

What, a Bruce road-trip? Could it be?

And so, I let her analyze the ticket schedule discovering a few possibilities, namely New York City, Philadelphia, and Austin.

We both logged in to try for the shows, then came the ticket queues, and there she was, a decent number for Austin. I guess Ticketmaster had more faith in her figuring out the website and getting tickets.

It was finally her turn, I coached her on what seats to pick, and there it was, a sweet block of four seats.

Then came, “Why don’t you just take your nephew and brother-in-law? I already saw Bruce on Broadway and at Wrigley Field. I don’t need to see him again.”

“What” I replied. “You don’t understand, you need the full Bruce experience, with band, indoors. It’s so much more awesome.”

“Nah, that’s fine, you go with them and enjoy yourself.”

Her loss, but holy crap, we’re going to Austin! Let’s tell the family!

We’re Going to Austin!

As it turns out, we both have family near enough to Austin that we could make this more than just a trip to Austin; we would also get in some quality family time!

So, sadly, my wife may never experience Bruce with the E-Street Band indoors, but in the end, I didn’t care, I was going to see Bruce!

I won’t bore you with much of the Austin trip only to say that I fell in love with Austin again, kind of wished we had moved there eight years ago, but alas, it was great to see family.

Bruce was playing at Moody Center just outside the downtown area. It was a short enough walk from our hotel, so my nephew, brother-in-law, and I, ditched our significant others a few hours before the show and found ourselves at Scholz Garten for some pre-concert food and beverages.

Scholz’s Garten has been a staple in Austin since 1866, serving German food a-plenty, well, except for days when there are big events nearby. On party days, they trim down their menu for speed. While I may have to go back for a weinerschnitzel, on this day it was time for a brat and some beers. I’ll give them credit for their efficiency and the tastiness of the food. Most Texans know this is a perfect pre-activity spot, and I’m glad we found it.

As we made our way to Moody Center, past the proverbial people selling T-Shirts that weren’t of the official kind, the first question was what door to enter. Our tickets read “Portal 5,” which, silly me, meant look around the outside for Portal 5, but alas, there are only two entrances at Moody Center, East Gate and West Gate. Yup, no clue what was the better gate to enter. I thought, “Really, you couldn’t also have a North and South Gate” for some entrance efficiency, and you couldn’t just add “Enter at East Gate” on the electronic ticket?

We finally ended up in the right place, found the merchandise booth where I bought my first concert t-shirt in about twenty years, beverages were secured, and our seats were found.

Showtime

And then, around 7:35 PM, the lights went down. There he was, illuminated in a spotlight, as the band kicked into the Edwin Starr classic, “War.”

The Land of Hopes and Dreams concert had begun.

This tour, spawned by the ICE crap that hit Minnesota, Bruce’s subsequent song creation of “Streets of Minneapolis,” and just a need to speak up as Bruce is wont to do, was not meant to be a “Greatest Hits” kind of tour. Nope, Bruce brought along Tom Morello, he from Rage Against the Machine fame and one always willing to speak his mind, for help, and blasted through three hours of songs that touched on a variety of political themes Bruce has championed over the years.

That’s right, no screen doors slammin’ on the way to “Thunder Road,” no “Rosalita” coming out tonight, no recapturing “Glory Days,” and no kisses to “Prove It All Night.” Instead, there was a blistering version of “The Ghost of Tom Joad” with Morello, a raucous version of “American Land,” and the always moving “American Skin (41 Shots).”

You bring out a “Death to My Hometown,” “Murder Incorporated,” and “My City of Ruins,” along with the statement song, “Streets of Minneapolis,” and you can understand the message Bruce was trying to make, that America has a lot of challenges right now to overcome if it wants to become the land of greatness it can be. Only if we face those challenges the right way, by working together instead of being divided, can we get there, and it will take all of us.

Bruce did what Bruce does best at times, orating like a preacher and making you think about the world around you. His message wasn’t one of hating the other guy, but instead being a person strong enough to disagree with someone while at the end of the day, both people being able to share life for the common good of all. His challenge to all was to make their voices heard, make change, but do it the human way, not the way of some who degrade others and thinks there are levels to humanity.

And yes, while the show did have a political side, you didn’t leave the show with a sense of dread. Nope, you left the show with a sense of hope. Mixed with the message was classic Bruce, with the hope of “The Risiing,” the we are all together on this train of “The Land of Hope and Dreams,” the bursts of life with “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” and the rockin’ and dancin’ times of “Born to Run” and “Dancing In the Dark.”

Add something about Morello’s solo on Ghost of Tom Joad – started at age 17, he’s now 61. When I’m 110 I should be able to shred just like him!

The E-Street band was as awesome as ever, even as they all age gracefully, and at 76 years old, damn, seeing Bruce command and audience and blast a guitar for three hours was inspiring. Nope, he doesn’t stop, as the show was mostly song, guitar change, song, guitar change, song, guitar change, and Bruce playing to every person in the venue, even making his way to the stage riser in the middle of the floor seats giving up close and personal joy for those who might have thought their seats weren’t that great. And, oh yea, holy fuck, that Tom Morello can play a mean guitar. I’ve never seen him before, but damn, as someone like me just trying to learn three chords, watching his hands flying up and down the fretboard was a site to be seen. All I could think of during “The Ghost of Tom Joad” was, “Hmm, Tom started playing around 17 year old, and he’s now 61. If I keep practicing, maybe when I’m 110, I’ll be able to shred just like him!

Look, Bruce knows how to spread a message. Bruce knows how to rock. And more importantly Bruce knows how to give you hope.

It’s us to take that hope and make it a reality.

Two giant, hopeful thumbs up for Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band. I didn’t miss some of the greatest hits, it was more inspiring being at a show with message.

I am, however, a little bummed that my wife missed it.

That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right! L8R!!

Ahh, be careful if you are a star from a horror movie, those fans are crazy!

Yup, “Faceless After Dark” gives us Bowie (Jenna Kanell). She is a one-hit wonder star in a horror movie with a clown, and while she had her signature line from the movie, and developed a cult following, her horror movie career is stuck in one-hit-wonder mode.

For Bowie, her life is miserable, she gets passed over for every role, and even her best friend Ryan (Danny Kang) can’t get her a job.

So, with some encouragement from Ryan, Bowie starts writing her own script. I mean, why not? “Write what you want to be in” is Ryan’s advice.

What do you do if you decide to write your own script? Yup, you think about your girlfriend who is away, making a movie, maybe smoke something that takes you someplace else, then get weird images through your phone from someone with no caller ID.

Oh, and then start drinking and kind of lose your mind.

Only now you have a problem. You may be in your own, mental craziness, but it’s stalker, fan time!

Enter a dude with some hedge shears, and, well, you can’t really think straight because of all the weird stuff you just inhaled, drank, and well, your own crazy.

So, Bowie finds herself with a crazy fan holding her hostage, him recreating the movie that made her a star, and her running around her girlfriend’s house trying to figure out how to call the cops.

Sure, you think the fan is crazy, I mean he shows up with a clown mask and hedge shears, but in this house, crazy has a new name, and that name is “Bowie.”

So as not to give too much away, let’s just say that Bowie has decided it’s better to recreate the horror movie in her head rather than actually write it.

The gore, thankfully, escalates quickly, and we learn that maybe it isn’t such a good idea to be the stalker of a star in a horror movie.

There were two things I was thinking as I was watching “Faceless After Dark.” First, Jenna Kannel is wonderful in the role of Bowie, the crazy, unstable horror film star. While we quickly develop the knowledge that Bowie is crazier than her fans, it was fun seeing Bowie sink deeper and deeper into her psychosis, much to the dismay of her stalker fans.

The second thing I couldn’t help but think was that her woman is gonna be pissed when she gets home.

Surprisingly, though, her woman, Jessica (Danielle Lyn), appears to live the life of “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

“Faceless After Dark” does a great job taking you into the psychosis of a movie star stuck as a one-hit-wonder of a horror movie. The gore isn’t completely crazy, but it is solid as things escalate while the film progresses, and I loved the scene where Bowie tries to use an Apple, lightning charging cord to charge a Samsung Phone. I’m just like that.

It’s a solid 4 stars out of 5 for “Faceless After Dark.” Enjoy the psychosis of a horror movie star!

That’s it for this one! I’m Andy! L8R!!

I must say that when I got the press release for “Frogman,” I wondered two things. One, is there really a city called Loveland, Ohio, and two, if so, who would set some fictitious legend about a creature in said city.

Turns out there is an actual Loveland, Ohio, and it also turns out the city has a legend about, well, you guessed it, a frogman.

Who knew?

I’m still not sure the town will like the apparent “newfound footage” of frogman, nor the direction the footage seems to take the legend, but hey, it’s about 90 minutes of taking the weirdness of a legend of a, well, frogman, to a bizarre, horror-filled level.

As the movie goes, young Dallas, at an impressionable young age of 12, captured some film footage of Frogman, a mythical creature who lived in the woods around Loveland, Ohio. This creature was about four feet tall, looked like a frog, and walked around on two legs.

No one really believed Dallas, but his entire life he has been haunted with this footage, and of his desire to find Frogman once and for all.

Fast forward 20 years and Dallas is, well, 32, his life is kind of crappy, so what to do? You grab that old video camera with a couple of friends and try to find Mr. Frogman.

And if you’re a fledgling filmmaker like Dallas, you decide to also make it into a full-blown documentary.

As you drag your videographer friend, as well as the girl you want to be your girlfriend but won’t tell her you want her to be your girlfriend, along, quickly you find that there may be more to the legend than you believe. What really tips you off? Why, when the local sheriff tells you to leave town of course.

If you’re Dallas, do you leave town? Heck no! You’ve got Frogman to find, into the woods you go to set up camp, but you and your friends are still pretty stupid because you don’t really have camping provisions nor enough cell batteries for your phones, but damn, your video camera battery seems to last forever!

Eventually you find the true story of Frogman, and it ain’t good. Yea, let’s just say that there might be little Frog-people walking around pretty soon, and you’re wrapped up in the mess.

And even with all the footage you have, no one still believes you.

Ahh, the life of trying to prove a weird legend.

The difficulty I had with Frogman was that it couldn’t seem to decide if it wanted to go for the completely absurd or the uber-suspense side of a movie. There was a Blair Witch Project feel with the entire “footage” aspect, but most of the time that footage just showed some really inept people. Frogman didn’t hit that creepy level to feel frightened, and there were too many horror movie clichés, like the “I’ll go find dry wood by myself” scene.

While the movie folks did take a crazy, actual legend and turn it even crazier, I guess I wanted a little more. I’m not sure if that more was going over-the-top, or more on the being scary, but the more never made it. For me Frogman gets 2 ½ stars out of 5. I just wanted more.

That’s it for this one! I’m Andy! L8R!!

Do you want nine horror movies that get right to the point? Yup, no, long, drawn-out plot development, no “the girl will spend five minutes trying to find someplace to hide,” no yelling at your screen, “Get to the killing already!”

What if they were tied together into one, neat, 90 minute package?

Here comes, “Sinphony: A Clubhouse Horror Anthology”

Let’s Clubhouse Together

As the story goes, a bunch of horror film folks got together on Clubhouse, the social media place, and decided to put together nine different visions where something supernatural messes with the main character.

While each supernatural thing messing with the poor, main character is different, each little movie has one thing in common, the song “Fortress,” brings them together.

It’s an interesting concept that I kind of liked. No muss, no fuss, just blood and sometimes guts.

Here are some short blurbs about each of the nine parts…

Mother Love

There apparently is a serial killer in the neighborhood, and our heroine is home alone with her son. Thinking the killer is in her house, why call the police when you can get on a group call with your coven of witch friends?

Yea, no surprise, the killer is in her place, but damn, the lesson here is simply that if you are a crazed killer, well, stay away from the witches.

My favorite part of this little gem – The son jumping up and down with glee as witchy mom is wielding a knife and covered in blood.

There isn’t a lot of talking in this one. It quickly gets to the stabbing and slashing! We also find that witches aren’t as dedicated to each other as one might hope.

Ear Worm

Ahh, a father and son team are hired to clean out some mold. Too bad for them that personal protection guidelines weren’t being followed.

Nope, sonny-boy inhales some wacky stuff and gives new meaning to the term “ear worm.”

Yup, voices are in the son’s head, let’s throw in some hallucinating, we get some death and dying, and the world is about to have a real problem with mold.

Not too gory for this one, but it might have you wear a mask the next time you are cleaning out dead things in your basement!

Forever Young

If you are older, at first this one might make you wonder if being 30 was a good year, or if you might have wanted to stay 30 forever.

Yup, a woman turns 30 and can’t stand it, she wants to be young again. The stuff of adults is making her crazy, you know, things like real estate and having kids.

So, what do you do?

Yup, you join the kids and do some social media dancing.

Sadly, this dance craze isn’t for the elders as it will make you insane, or instead of 30, how about being stuck in your teens?

Not too much blood and gore, mostly flashes of weirdness, but you might realize those teen years really kind of sucked.

The Keeper

Ahh, the old innkeeper is a kind-hearted fellow. Too bad for him he was a little too kind-hearted.

When a family shows up, the innkeeper’s radar pops up that there might be some family violence going on.

Yea, the dad appears to be a bad man, and mom’s plan to get the family away from people doesn’t go as planned.

Meanwhile, given his chance to help, the innkeeper finds out that maybe he should have kept to himself, and the real, dark secret of the family reveals itself!

Too bad, the inn seemed like a nice, secluded getaway!

Limited Edition

Ahh, recapturing a bit of the past may not always be the best idea. Yup, a woman finds something from her past that brings her joy, but sadly, there may be joy no more as a mysterious person seems to ruin the moment forever.

And, well, that took a turn I wasn’t really expecting! Nice! And weird.

Can’t give too much more of this one away without ruining things, but dang, this one was kind of fun!

Do Us Part?

When you see a plate hovering in the air, maybe it’s time to get out of the house because it might mean that your ex is a ghost.

Okay, maybe that’s not a horrible thing. She likes to hang around and will clean up after you, but if you broke up with her, and she is a possessive kind of girlfriend, her being able to hold objects in the material world, like toasters and pans, may not work out in your favor.

A nice, little story of love, and death.

Tabitha

Well now, her robbery didn’t go as planned, blood is starting to ooze, and she is getting woozy.

The question now is if her dying is causing her to see things, is there really something evil lurking around her, or will this be her version of hell?

Ahh, a lot of blood oozing for this one, and a woman losing her mind! Oh, and my wondering why didn’t she just bite the bullet and call for an ambulance?

I loved the “So, how are you?” while she was on the phone. I guess it was a good thing she didn’t tell her mom, “Heading to hell!”

Maternally Damned

Well shit, maybe it wasn’t a good thing you slept with the guy you met at the bar no matter how dreamy he was.

Why?

Because here comes the baby, and you have no idea where the daddy is, or what funky sperm he might have had.

Sadly, for our heroine, Mr. Barhopper apparently nibbled her neck, and now she is having the weirdest pregnancy ever. Yup, maybe she should have been more concerned when she seemed to be craving blood during her pregnancy.

“Something isn’t right” is kind of an understatement for this one!

Symphony of Horror (opened and closed the movie)

This one opened and closed the film, maybe helping us realize that babies aren’t always a good thing, in fact sometimes they might just be downright evil.

Wrapping Up

I have to say that this was a fun batch of horror. You kind of got the best of every horror genre, slasher film, suspense film, blood-spurting films, and some uber-creepiness, all rolled into one. I also appreciated not having to waste time through all that boring plot development. Nope, Sinphony and all its segments get right to the point.

It’s 4 stars out of 5 for “Sinphony: A Clubhouse Horror Anthology.” You shouldn’t get bored, things keep flowing, and if one style of horror isn’t your thing, sit tight for a bit because some vampire kid gnawing on someone’s belly will be right around the corner!

That’s it for this one! I’m Andy! L8R!!

At first I was a little upset with myself. Why? How could I request a film to review where I would have to read during it? I mean, it turns out the movie is from Germany, and, well, they speak German in it, and the movie has English subtitles if you so desire. I guess I got sucked into the ton of accolades the press kit listed, and as the movie began, I was intrigued by the main characters of Margot and Dieter so reading it was!

The movie is Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes, and while you may have to read a lot during the movie, it is mostly worth it.

Let’s get to reviewin’!

As the movie opens, we learn that Margot (Luisa Taraz) has inherited a castle. Cool! She is also married to, for no better word, an asshole. Oh, boo-hoo, quit your complaining Dieter (Frederik von Lüttichau), you had to know it would be a long drive to a castle in the middle of nowhere?

They arrive at the castle and Dieter now exclaims, “Your family has all this money, and all we get is this dump?” Yea, this is Dieter.

Margot, on the other hand, sees potential in the dump and remembers the good-old days of the castle. She begins to envision scenes of seduction and mystery.

Meanwhile our “hero,” Dieter, is on the hunt in the basement for vintage wine, only to be freaked out and lose his car keys.

Not to get too much into the weeds about this movie, but there seems to be some insanity building once someone ends up this castle, kind of in the way, in The Shining, Jack went crazy once in the hotel.

Yup, Dieter is losing his mind, and rather than try to find the car keys in the basement and get the hell out of there, he decides they should just spend the night in the creepiness. Me, I just couldn’t help but wonder, “Aren’t these people getting hungry?”

And, oh yea, Margot has now arrived on her side of craziness, much to the, hmm, “detriment” I guess is a decent word, of Dieter.

And thus ends the first half of the film. I was sucked in.

Then came the second half.

As the second half began, I completely understood the insanity of the first half, and that was fine. The bummer part, though, for this review? I can’t mention the second half without ruining the first half.

So, what to say?

I suppose all I can mention is I thought the first half of Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes was a solid, weird, horror movie. The second half just kind of rolled into, “You might want to be careful with those drugs!”

Don’t get me wrong, as a whole I was entertained. For the second half, though, I almost wish the movie folks had just kept the “castle weirdness” out of it, rolled the story back to crazy people with a real-life revenge result, and then called it a day.

A solid 4 stars in the first half, I suppose 3 stars for what they were trying to accomplish in the second half, so let’s average things together and give Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes 3 ½ stars. Some fun horror stuff, even if you do have to “read” during the movie!

That’s it for this one! I’m Andy! L8R!!

Jane (Emma Fitzpatrick) is kind of messed up. She does drugs, drinks, is kind of mental, and got attacked by a monster.

The underlying problem?

When you do drugs, drink a lot, and are kind of mental, most no one believes you if you are attacked by a monster.

What do you do if you are Jane?

Well, as Jane is also a social media influencer type, she takes her story to the little screen.

That’s great and all, but the problem is there is still this monster, the adults in the room don’t seem to want to do anything about it, and said monster keeps attacking Jane.

So, Jane decides she must kill it.

Such is the basic premise of “Take Back the Night,”

Let’s dive in a little more.

Jane is fresh from an art showing and is now in a dark alley. When she finds herself locked in the alley she gets attacked by some creature and then ends up in an emergency room.

The detective, Jennifer Lafleur, questions her, the rape kit is brought out, Jane’s sister, Angela Gulner, isn’t sure of the attack, and I question the care of the hospital as Jane is sent home with this giant gash in her belly that doesn’t look like it received any stitches.

Since no one seems to really want to help, and all her sister wants to do is send her to therapy, Jane posts on social media to get her fans involved. Low and behold the post goes viral. Really, who doesn’t want to see a person with a giant gash in their belly claiming to be attacked by a monster?

If that isn’t bad enough for Jane, here comes the local news reporter who interviews Jane but has ulterior motives to discredit Jane, the detective that did the original questioning now questions Jane’s timeline of events, and Jane takes a drive down a weird alley, where, of course, we get another monster attack. We also learn she is the worst videographer, ever, as she doesn’t any good video of the monster. But hey, some of her followers caught a “glimpse,” though, and they have the same scars, and they let Jane know how to kill it.

Yes, now Jane is a metalsmith, and eventually it is time for the climactic scene between good and evil. Sadly, Jane is kind of wasted. The ending doesn’t finish the way I wanted, nor probably how Jane wanted, and I was bummed.

Here’s the thing, I get the underlying tone of the movie – a woman is attacked and people don’t believe her. Her story gets picked apart, she is subjected to ridicule, and she really doesn’t know what to do. At that core the movie is great. The difficulty comes with the strange plot twists, like the TV reporter being romantically linked with the detective, Jane having to forge a specific knife to kill the monster, and the ending, because, and I’m just guessing, but there would be a lot more difficulties for Jane following the climactic fight on the roof.

The movie looked good, the acting was good enough, but I guess I just wanted some kind of closure for this movie, some kind of success for Jane, rather than an ending that sets up “Take Back the Night 2.”

It’s 2 1/2 stars out of 5 for “Take Back the Night.” I wanted Jane to win, I mean really win, and not end up wearing a wig.

That’s it for this one! L8R!!!

Women. Sometimes all men can do is bitch about them.

Men. Sometimes all women can do is eat them.

Welcome to “Witching and Bitching,” a fun, weird movie where a group of thieves might have been better off treating their women a little nicer.

Set in Spain (the film is in Spanish with English subtitles), our movie begins as we get introduced to some witches. As witches sometimes do they are making a weird kind of brew and discover their ills can be cured with some gold.

Enter our men.

Looking for a quick score at a pawn shop, our gang of bumbling thieves decide the best way to rob the shop is to dress as furries and historical characters, infiltrate the normal folk, then rob the shop of gold rings.

Ah, but things aren’t that simple as Jose (Hugo Silva) and Tony (Mario Casas), along with Jose’s son, have things go wrong, there’s a gunfight, blood, and oh, no, poor Sponge-bob-ish looking dude!

What to do?

Ahh, let’s hijack a taxi and get out of town, heading to France.

Seems like a plan, especially as they get away from the cops, only Jose’s ex isn’t too thrilled that her son is involved in a robbery. The ex, however, is the least of Jose’s worry as our band of heroes find themselves in a small town in the north of Spain.

Yup, they need a pit stop, find some bizarre house, and little do they know that the place is inhabited by witches who are getting ready for some weird, witch ritual. Mayhem erupts, we find out who is looking through the hole in the floor, and the world might be safe from the witches taking over, well, at least for a little while.

I think the thing I liked about “Witching and Bitching” is that it didn’t try to take itself too seriously. The witch story was a hoot, the heist portion was fun and over the top, and sure, there are a lot of things that would never happen in real life, well, at least I hope not, like women flying around, walking on the ceiling, and liking brooms a little too much, but it’s a great mix of a touch of horror with silliness.

As entertaining as the first acts were, the best scenes I felt were at the end, the dinner with people running everywhere, and then the final, ritual scene. You will probably never get the image of the big-ass witch out of your head!

At the end of the day I’m giving “Witching and Bitching” 3 1/2 stars out of 5. It’s not a masterpiece, but it is damn entertaining.

For the Blu-ray the extras were kind of normal, but it was interesting seeing how they pulled off the heist shoot in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, especially since there was no way to shut the area down for a movie shoot.

Grab some popcorn, maybe drink some frog’s blood, and enjoy a fun look at why men should treat their women better!

That’s it for this one! L8R!!
